some more Singaporean arachnids: I saw a couple species of wandering spiders in the genus recently named genus Bowie. I think the silver-legged one is the aptly named B. argentipes, but haven’t got an ID for the golden one

they’re sizable, chunky spiders, usually found sitting still or prowling through leaf litter for insect prey. the golden ones were quite common where I got these photos, with an adult or juvenile every few feet along the trail.

As legalization of same-sex marriage inches closer to reality in Thailand, the Pew Research Center looked into attitudes across the continent.

Same-sex marriage is an active legal and social issue across South, Southeast and East Asia. In the wake of several court rulings on the issue across Asia in the past year, we analyzed data from three recent Pew Research Center surveys to see how people in the region feel about legalizing same-sex marriage.

A median of 49% of adults in 12 places in Asia say they at least somewhat favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally. Another 43% say they oppose legal same-sex marriage, according to surveys conducted between June 1, 2022, and Sept. 17, 2023.

Views toward same-sex marriage are most favorable in Japan, where nearly seven-in-ten (68%) say they at least somewhat favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally. Japan, the only Group of Seven member that does not legally recognize same-sex couples, has been facing internal and external pressure to do so.

In Vietnam, views on legalizing same-sex marriage are similarly positive – 65% of adults support it. Roughly six-in-ten in Hong Kong (58%) and Cambodia (57%) also favor legal same-sex marriage. A Hong Kong court recently ruled that same-sex couples hold equal inheritance rights, though Hong Kong law does not allow them to marry.

Same-sex marriage was an issue on Thailand’s campaign trail this year. Six-in-ten adults there favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally. Around a third of Thais oppose it.

In India, where the Supreme Court recently rejected a petition to legalize same-sex marriage, about 53% of adults say they favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry, while 43% oppose it. (The survey was conducted prior to the ruling.)

In Singapore, no clear majority favors (45%) or opposes (51%) same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is not legal in Singapore, and its parliament amended the constitution last year to prevent legal challenges to the definition of marriage.

And in Taiwan, roughly equal shares say they support (45%) and oppose (43%) same-sex marriage. Taiwan is the only place in Asia where same-sex marriage is legal.

In a handful of places in Asia, majorities oppose legal same-sex marriage. In Indonesia, 92% say they oppose it, including 88% who strongly oppose it. Large majorities in Malaysia (82%) and Sri Lanka (69%) also oppose it.

And in South Korea, a slight majority (56%) say they oppose legal same-sex marriage, while 41% favor it. Lawmakers proposed South Korea’s first same-sex marriage bill earlier this year.

Views of same-sex marriage by religion

Though different places have vastly different religious demographics, the religiously unaffiliated tend to be among the most likely to support same-sex marriage.

In the six places where enough religiously unaffiliated individuals were surveyed to analyze their responses separately, half or more of the religiously unaffiliated support legal same-sex marriage. That includes 73% in Japan.

Meanwhile, Muslims and Christians are often, but not always, among the least likely to support it. For instance, while roughly six-in-ten religiously unaffiliated Singaporeans favor same-sex marriage, fewer than a third of Christians and Muslims do.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, the two Muslim-majority places surveyed, Muslims report the lowest support for same-sex marriage of any religious group in any place surveyed. Only 4% of Indonesian Muslims and 8% of Malaysian Muslims support it.

Views of same-sex marriage by age and gender

Across most places surveyed, younger adults are more likely than their older counterparts to support same-sex marriage. This difference is most extreme in Taiwan: 75% of Taiwanese adults under 35 favor it, compared with 33% of those 35 and older.

In five places surveyed, women are more likely than men to support legal same-sex marriage. For example, in South Korea, 48% of women say they favor it, compared with 33% of men. And in Cambodia, 62% of women favor it, compared with 50% of men. In other places surveyed, there are no significant differences by gender.

SUICIDE IN SINGAPORE AND THAT ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

To take one’s own life is a tragedy which no one should have to go through. Nothing spells failure more than this  - an abject failure of parenting, society and state to secure the worth and dignity of human life. I say this in the full knowledge that I failed my son, David.

There is little doubt that anxiety and isolation are the primary reasons for suicides. But are these not symptoms rather than causes? Treating the symptom, including through prescribed medication and counselling, may not necessarily alleviate this disturbing problem over the term. It is akin to a mechanic ascertaining that our motorcar’s shock absorbers need to be replaced prematurely, due to the stress of driving it daily through an unpaved and rocky trail. Would it not have been better if the road had been levelled and paved instead, to prevent damage to the absorbers? Would it not be better to work towards removing the stressful demands of our daily life? Surely, this is what is most needed, and not more professionals in mechanics or seemingly salubrious opioids.

Let us please consider this passage  :

“Additionally, the pressure to “excel” in order to compete for the limited number of spaces in the elite public schools is intense, and this breeds extreme anxiety among Singaporean schoolchildren. Many children in Singapore suffer from myriad psychological issues because of this system, which is designed to turn thinking children into docile workers. While our children achieve some of the highest ranks on standardized tests, the system takes its toll. In fact, the pressure spurred seventy-one students to take their lives between 2013-2016, the youngest of whom was just ten years old.” (1)

The referenced book was published in 2020. Yet, we are informed, just a few days ago that the suicide rates, especially among the youth have shot up ever since, as this headline by American business news outlet, Bloomberg, screams on July 2, 2023 :

The article goes on to disclose that “Suicide was a leading cause of death for 10 to 29 year-olds in the country, for the fourth consecutive year…..”(2) The figures that Bloomberg advanced are reportedly derived from the Samaritans of Singapore, an organization dedicated to providing “emotional support to those in crisis…” (3).

Just as troubling is this statement by Dr. Jared Ng, a mental health practitioner, “This increase paints a picture of unseen mental distress permeating our society, especially amongst our youths and the elderly.” (4) While we, along with everyone else in the world were forcibly sequestered and isolated by law, in our homes over prolonged periods during 2021 and 2022 as a consequence of an officially-declared pandemic, it is admittedly quite probable that the adverse impact of these regimentations to our mental health went unseen or undiagnosed. Nevertheless, it could not have been unforeseen. Clearly, we failed where we could have made a life’s difference, knowing that isolation is harmful to our mental health, more so since it goes against our natural inclination for social and emotional contact or support. These pandemic-related measures further reinforced the rigidity that our public education and other social-engineering/control systems, including conscription service, purvey and demand.

Let us also examine an excerpt of a news report from the Wall Street Journal about China, whose educational system parallels Singapore’s in terms of its structural rigidity, uncompromising promotion of mass uniformity and the screeching celebration of crass elitism :  

“…researchers closely examined 79 elementary and middle school suicide cases from 2013 and found that almost all – 92% - occurred after a teen had endured stress associated with school, in some cases an argument with a teacher.” (5) The news report further reveals that 63% of these “occurred in the latter half of the school year, when students usually experience more stress due to high school and college entrance exam.” (5) Echoing this eye-popper is China Daily, the official English language news outlet of the Chinese state and political party, in a report of June 14, 2014, an excerpt of which offers this damning conclusion, “According to the annual report on China’s Education (2014), or the Blue Book of Education, ….most of the teenagers who killed themselves are in middle school, and they did so mainly because they could not bear the heavy pressure of the test-oriented education system.”(6)

Four years later, CGTN, the Chinese state broadcaster reports that the causes for youth suicide remain unchanged – pressure in school and also by parents. (7) The latter aspect, generally not publicly reported or discussed, is a major risk factor in child suicide, as I explained in 2020 :

“The Singaporean school system knowingly recruits parents as accomplices in piling pressure on the children. If a student has the misfortune to be merely average, their parents are called in. They are told by the school that their child is falling behind, and they are strongly encouraged to press their child to study harder.”(8)

The pressure put on parents and guardians inevitably lead to more after-school private tuition for the children, as Channel News Asia, Singapore’s state broadcaster reports :

“Despite their initial lukewarm attitude towards tuition, they feel it is necessary now as their children just need “some pushing” to excel.” (9)

Much of the stress and anxiety that our children experience daily are the result of myopic and also self-serving government policies and actions. This is the elephant in the room. Every parent or educator knows of this and yet very few are prepared to confront or discuss it openly and without fear. A regimented economic, social, educational and military conscription system, founded on elitist methodologies (top down) about what constitutes excellence and success are factors motivating suicides across the board, but more especially among the youth.

Social engineering and control are potent tools which a government wields to shape/mould each citizen, at times into an object similar to a cyborg – a mixture of machine and human being. When a child is born, he is almost immediately acculturated to aim to be perfect in every way, except his. This goes against the child’s nature. His consequent and inherent rebellion causes deep anxiety and self-isolation. While psychological and emotional support are crucial to alleviating the problem, removing the weighty shackles placed around the child’s limbs is probably the more appropriate solution to his unwarranted dilemma.

Every child is a human being first, and not a machine to be moulded and shaped in accordance with the rigid demands of our economic and social model or order. It is far better to offer a flexible public educational and social system to the child rather than to shape her to fit into a rigid one instead, and then to live with the tragic consequences. It is analogous to feeding a child. She knows when to stop when she has had enough. The question for our society and policy makers is this : are we listening to her when she says that she had her fill, or do we insist that we know her body and mind much better than she and hence, continue to stuff her to our satisfaction? We need to have this conversation, especially in one-size fits all authoritarian Singapore. It is long overdue. Far too many citizens, more especially our youth have been culled or lost because of our culture of silence. A culture which is propagated by and derived from the top for the most selfish of reasons.

China seems to be listening to the child, somewhat – the country removed written exam requirements for elementary school (6 and 7 years old), as the UK’s Independent news outlet reported in 2021. (10) While this small step is most welcomed and will surely go towards easing the burden and anxiety of Chinese school children, much more remains to be accomplished, whether in China or Singapore or any other domain where public education and other forms of social engineering/control are rigidly structured and enforced.

Sometime before he passed away, David said to me, “Be Yourself.” There is more to these words than many of us realize. The solution begins with the parent/guardian.

yknow i made a promise with myself that i'd make a post bout Luther and jingjing and a (possible) relationship between the two, and it's bout time i started on it

if you can't tell, i have nothing better to do.

to start off, i'll introduce who the two actually are. Luther is a Mexican-American gang member living in Los Angeles, with black being associated with him. He's violent, has been into dog fighting in the past and has a habit of killing cats, and he is usually misogynistic, especially to women he sleeps with. jingjing is a Singaporean man living in Singapore who acts as a translator for tian li, an old woman and healer jingjing lives with, and blue is his associated color. in general, he's rude, a former drug addict who ends up going cold turkey, will steal from someone if given the chance, and he slapped a child.

somehow these two ended up being my favorite characters in the whole series.

so here's the real question: why the fuck does blue show up semi-regularly in Luther's sections?

now, when after i finished the whole series, i started rereading specific sections more thoroughly, most notably Luther's. this was when I started seeing the color blue being mentioned throughout his chapters, but at the time i dismissed that as coincidence and me overreaching (i was still kinda reeling over the Luther encountering jingjing back in vol4).

well, if you have not figured it out, i realized it was not really a coincidence, or at least, it wouldn't have been if the series went on.

here's a (semi) cohesive list of instances of the color blue showing up in Luther's sections:

The blue pencil in volume 1. this is probably the most significant one. It belonged to Hopi, and Luther has mixed feelings about Hopi, given that the former killed the latter. In vol5, Luther asks Juarez for the blue pencil, and at the very end of Luther's last section he's even described as elated when he gets the pencil as if the pencil will tell him "todos los secretos del tiempo" (all the secrets of time).

The pale blue balloon drugs, usually just abbreviated as "pale blue". pale blue is a perfect descriptor for jingjing's tag color. really it's no surprise these show up, given that Luther's gang is one of the cogs in the balloon parades. notably, Luther is tempted to smoke a pale blue in vol4, in the very same chapter that he encounters jingjing.

the jacket Luther chooses at the Hawaiian hotel in vol2 is specifically stated to be "pale blue" with clouds. it's worth noting he ends up losing the jacket at Hula Hoops after he has sex with Dice, Destiny, and Dawn.

when Luther is about to smoke the black balloon, he sees blue and wonders if it’s from the powder or the moon.

Luther hears the next song played is Mr. Blue. when i checked the wikia annotations, it only showed a question mark regarding that line.

Bonus:

Özgur describes Luther with blue-black tattoos in vol4. worth noting blue and black are colors corresponding to the house.

a total of five instances. and the former two show up regularly (or Hopi appears at least once in every book). not enough to be completely confirmed, but definetely sus.

now to part 2: when Luther and jingjing actually meet. it’s only two chapters, and it only starts at the very end of Luther’s and ends at the beginning of jingjing’s. how Luther describes jingjing is interesting; he senses something weird, and when jingjing speaks, Luther describes jj’s words as “not his and never will be”. and when Luther finally allows the handoff for the pale blue, he can’t stop watching jingjing leave, and then he suddenly gives chase. even Luther can’t give a reason atm for why. jingjing starts his chapter right after Luther’s, and when he finally gets Luther off his trail, the Narcons wonder what would’ve happened if Luther had reached jingjing.

admittedly part 2 is about as short as their interaction. two more things tho: Luther and jingjing’s titles reference one another, and Luther’s splash page has jingjing’s splash page’s elements as well. comparison below:

part three is speculation bullshit, mainly referencing how important pink, blue, and black are. Xanther has black as the second most important color, what with her wearing pink and black and her slowly becoming more confrontational, like Luther. jingjing has pink as his second most important color, referencing his desire for pink balloons, and his disdain for Xanther and jealousy that Xanther got to “keep” the cat. to complete this cycle, Luther would have blue as his second important color, referencing the blue pencil (aka Hopi), and the fact that Luther was the one to give chase to jingjing.

it’s rather simple: Luther would fall in love with jingjing. call it a reach, but that “why would Luther use a man like a woman” line that he had in vol1 makes me think he is bisexual but is hard repressing it. it would be even better if he is in denial but slowly accepts he’s in love AND the love is one-sided on Luther’s end at first.

side note: with 98% certainty jingjing is attracted to men; calling those two guys in vol1 jude (pretty) boys, him sleeping with other men (tho that was so he could get cash to buy drugs), and he described patience and wisdom in male terms when he wonders why he should court and marry them (misunderstanding tian li’s teachings). but this is not about assigning sexualities of fictional characters.

it’s cyclical, really. Xanther would have become obsessed in “killing” Luther since he has “red eyes” (maybe he has eyes of flames that tian li warns her of?), jingjing would be resentful of Xanther for stealing “his” cat, and Luther would start longing for jingjing.
