watched a bit of this 'trash*ers' documentary during lunch and omg a) didnt know that about the sopr*nos LOL b) holy shit compared to the actual 'bad guys of hockey' kent parson looks like a saint hahahahaha.
i feel like this sort of 'hockey culture' is exactly what check please was gunning for in the themes and message tho. Taking down the idea that in order to make oneself feel big one needs to make some 'other' feel small - physically, mentally, whatever. The kind of culture that feels threatened at the thought that any sort of difference could survive or even thrive - baking pies, being gay, having ptsd from bullying, heck even golden boy jack's anxiety. In the comic all the differences were ultimately what pushed the main characters into getting their own happy ending ;_; and i much prefer the comic's world view where success does not need bullying or a degredation of an other to be success. But ho boy was it FASCINTATING to peek into a world where being the worst asshole is the end goal. I know nothing about hockey culture other than check please and my two bros in chicago so like..im coming at this completely clueless.
Anyway 99% sure this bully mentality is why my italian grandpa despised all mafia related movies (except boardwalk empire that was his guilty pleasure, poor grandpa even bought some moon shine to drink and he and grandma laughed and laughed over how disgusting it was).
(also im really curious about that original much darker less pies screenplay now)
