But, don’t throw this off as a BMW clone. Actually, it was spearheaded by the same Toyota chief engineer that oversaw the FR-S/BR-Z; and in similar fashion, both Toyota and BMW started with a basic modular chassis, but went their separate ways from there, though the Supra is assembled on the same Austrian assembly line as the Z4. 

Engineered by Toyota’s GAZOO racing team, the Supra is truly a car in need of a track. Fortunately, the national press intro was right in our backyard at West Virginia’s Summit Point Motorsports Park.

Launch control ensures you get the best out of it, and keeping the throttle pinned for the full ¼-mile resulted in a time of 12.8–seconds at 111 miles-per-hour. 

Body panels are a mixed-metaphor of aluminum and steel. It looks much smaller in person; racy enough without going full fast and furious. Some air passageways are functional, most are not. 19-inch wheels come shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. 

Away from the track, in normal mode, not unlike the 86, it’s a quite pleasant daily driver. Only big bumps cause any shutter. Seats are low, however, so you feel like you’re straining to see over the dash.

You do get a unique steering wheel and shifter; though operation of it is just like BMW. Seats are also distinctive and quite nice. And yes, that means there’s iDrive to contend with too.

Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 24-City, 31-Highway, and 26-Combined.  We averaged 29.3 miles-per-gallon on Premium. Making an average Energy Impact Score of 12.7-barrels of yearly oil use, with 5.5 tons of CO2 emissions. 

The Supra is a much more serious performance car than the 86; so, price is equally higher, starting at $50,920. By the way, a Z4 is almost 13 grand more.

For some, especially internet haters, nothing short of bringing back the last A80 would have satisfied them. But, if they’d give this 5th gen Supra a chance, they’d learn that like many of us Americans, despite the European roots, it has become something entirely different. So don’t think of the 2020 Toyota GR Supra as a continuation of what we had before, rather it’s an amazing melting pot of something uniquely awesome.

2019 Infiniti QX50 Long-Term Update 4: A Glitch in the Matrix

In his second update on the 2018 Infiniti Q60, managing art director Mike Royer complained that Infiniti’s infotainment system feels like it’s a generation behind. After four months behind the wheel of the QX50, I’d say that’s a bit of an understatement. When I plug my phone in, for example, the Infiniti recognizes it as an iPod. When was the last time someone under 40 used an iPod?

If the system worked well, though, it would be less of a problem. I’d still complain about the dated graphics and lack of Apple CarPlay, but I wouldn’t use words such as “embarrassing” when I did. Unfortunately, it’s also unreliable.

Sometimes the Bluetooth stays paired. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes I can play music directly off my phone. Sometimes I can’t. The unpredictability is frustrating. And remember that part about the system thinking phones are iPods? Well, when you don’t have any music saved to iTunes, it has no idea what to do.

Even more frustrating is the fact that the software is incredibly buggy. And because Infiniti’s service department couldn’t find anything wrong when I took it in last month, I can only assume there’s an issue with the software itself. That means other owners may be dealing with a system that regularly glitches, too.

Over the last several months, I’ve had to deal with the navigation screen flickering, detecting phantom inputs, randomly rotating the map, and displaying confusing messages. The lower screen has been more reliable, but it’s still crashed on me and given me at least one “Launcher has stopped unexpectedly” message. And people wonder why I have a magnetic phone mount and use Waze or for all my navigational needs.

If I’d gone into the dealer and they’d said, “Oh, we have an update that fixes those problems,” that would have been one thing. But with no solution in sight, it looks like I’m stuck with the QX50 the way it is. And if the dealer can’t figure out what’s wrong in the next couple months, we’re really going to have a problem.

On a near-$60,000 luxury vehicle, it’s simply not acceptable to have so many problems with the infotainment system.

A lot of the praise went to the engine, as the Competition model comes with the S55 3-liter straight six engine of the M3 and M4 models. It has been mildly tuned to deliver a bit less power but overall, it’s the same mill under the hood. The bump in power compared to the original M2 is also quite big, the Competition having over 400 HP on tap.

Some would say that’s still not enough though. Some people just don’t understand the importance of balance between power and how much a car’s chassis can handle. More power isn’t always a good idea but the tuners out there already have what you’re looking for, if that’s what you’re into. The guys from BR-Performance just published a short video of a BMW M2 Competition that has been put through their Stage 1 treatment and shared the results.

The dyno shows a power output of 500 PS and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque, some 90 PS and 130 Nm extra compared to the standard M2. That’s a hefty increase, the upgraded M2 Competition now having more power and twist than its bigger brothers. Will that be too much for the rear axle? Not necessarily, as there are plenty of other cars out there with considerably more than that going to the rear wheels.

Getting back to the tuning side of things, the upgrade presented here doesn’t involve any hardware changes, which means it’s all done via software, the car running on stock internals and the stock exhaust. There’s no mention about warranty in this case though and that could be an issue for some potential customers.

First Drive: 2019 BMW Z4 M40i

SINTRA, Portugal – I blame social media for allowing humanity the opportunity to develop some of its worst traits into habits. One of those traits is the tendency to declare things we like to be the BEST EVAR and the things we don’t like as much to be THE WERK OF THE DEVIL. Unfortunately, that tweet-friendly sense of polarizing snark has no direct relationship to the gray scale world of matter and consequences we all share. Fortunately, all you have to do to escape this hell of our collective creation is put down your phone, grab the keys to something like the 2019 BMW Z4, and go for a drive.

While any car would do—I did ask you to put your phone down, right?—the newest BMW Z4 is an especially good choice for escaping not just social media but whatever it is that spikes your blood pressure. Why? Because it’s a comfortable, reasonably spacious, very quick, rewarding, and simply a fun car to drive. In short, it’s a real BMW for the first time since they changed the name from Z3 to Z4, and that means it’s fun in pretty much any situation. Two versions will be offered in America: the Z4 sDrive30i and the Z4 M40i. I drove the M40i on track at Estoril, and on the roads around Sintra and Lisbon.

It’s not so much about what’s gone into the new Z4 M40i, as the formula is, topologically, very similar to the last hot Z4: a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the top opens up—although this time, it’s a folding soft top rather than a retractable hard top. Instead, it’s more about what hasn’t gone into the new Z4, which is to say, it’s not replete with tuning and features designed to lure in the widest possible spectrum of buyers. Put another way, it’s not that they’ve spiced up the Z4; it’s that they’ve left out all the bland filler. The resulting flavor is much more concentrated.

The Z4’s dynamic chops are unmistakable from the first blip of the throttle and turn of the wheel. On a slippery, recently repaved Estoril road course, the Z4 crabbed and slipped its way into, through, and out of every corner at the limits of adhesion with something between eagerness and ease—neither the driver nor the car ever feel bored, but sometimes, if the driver isn’t fully on it, it almost feels like the car is judging you, ever so slightly. Like it’s taking affront at not being able to entertain you.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, and it takes all kinds, but the Z4 should strike most retinas as somewhere between cute and handsome. It’s no awkward-but-endearing Clown Shoe, and neither is it the flame-surfaced blob of the intervening years. It’s its own thing, and a new thing, wearing a new take on the BMW face and doing it well. I like it, or at the least, I don’t loathe it.

Inside, the Z4 is decidedly unloathable. Materials are finally up to snuff for a smaller, less-expensive BMW—the hard plastics are mostly held at bay—and the layout of the seating, controls, and touch points is perhaps the best I’ve ever experienced in a roadster; everything falls to hand the way it should. Even when populated by 12-plus feet and 450-plus pounds of human, the Z4 feels, dare I say it, roomy—for a two-seat, open-top sports car, anyway. The trunk even has space for all of your stuff (9.9 cu. ft. to be precise).

By the numbers, the new Z4 M40i falls into a bit of a gap in the market: 0-60 mph takes 4.4 seconds, top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, and the 3.0-liter turbo six generates 382 hp (at 5,000-6,500 rpm) and 369 lb-ft of torque (from 1,600-4,500 rpm). Compare those figures to say a Porsche Boxster S, which knocks 0.4 seconds off the 0-60 mph time when equipped with the Sport Chrono package; or to a Chevy Corvette, nearly three-quarters of a second quicker to 60 and likely no heavier than the BMW (the Bavarians haven’t released the curb weight for the Z4 M40i, but the sDrive30i weighs in at 3,286 lb with the turbo four-cylinder engine; the Corvette Convertible 1LT weighs in at 3,362 lb per the manufacturer). And of course you have the Toyota Supra, built on the same internal hardware, but tuned with different software, and wearing different exterior sheet metal. (I’ve driven both the Supra and the Z4, by the way, and they’re unbelievably different in feel and behavior).

By the numbers, then, the social media jockeys would have you believe the Z4 is somehow underpowered, or not sharp enough, or unlikely to lap the hallowed Nordschleife quickly enough. The Boxster or the Corvette or even the Camaro or the Mustang will obliterate the BMW, they’ll tweet, smug in their Wikipedia-powered superiority.

But that’s why you don’t listen to a bunch of Manhattan millennials when it comes to cars—just like you don’t listen to vegans when you’re interested in a quality cut of beef, or take guitar lessons from a flute player. There’s nothing wrong with vegans or with Manhattan millennials (or with flute players), of course, but on these topics, they’re only going to have opinions. No real experience or knowledge, and certainly no taste or discrimination.

With over a decade of wheeling the industry’s best cars around thousands of laps on tracks on three continents and exactly six tweets since January, I can assure you, the Z4 M40i is neither too slow, nor too soft, nor underpowered at all. Sure, it lacks the standout spec-sheet the Tweetniks have told us we should demand (and go totally mental over) and it has less chance of setting a ‘Ring record than a fried onion. But it’s one of the most well-rounded, let’s-go-anywhere two-seaters I’ve ever driven, and a brilliant sports car, even if it excels at nothing in particular. I suppose the question you have to ask yourself is: Are you more Goldilocks, or more Gangnam Style?

If you answered Goldilocks, congratulations, this is your new car—or at least it could be. Maybe even should be. If you answered Gangnam Style, well, maybe you’ve seen those electric scooters lying around everywhere?

SANTA BARBARA, California – There are a handful of midsize sedans out there whose names have become ubiquitous in the modern era, with the Altima being one of them. In its quarter century on the market, the made in America Altima has grown into a huge sales success for Nissan and a credible foil for the likes of the middleweight title holders Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

But while it’s all well and good to have name recognition, that’s certainly no guarantee of success in today’s bread-and-butter sedan segment—one that has been getting crushed in favor of crossovers. The Ford Fusion is essentially on life support, and the likes of the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6, and Volkswagen Passat have all seen their share of the sales pie shrink. If you want your sedan to survive in today’s landscape, you better bring it when you bring out a new model like the sixth-generation, 2019 Nissan Altima.

Though Nissan is outwardly bullish on the Altima’s future, it’s clear that it wanted—in some ways needed—to make a bold, aggressive exterior design statement to draw notice to a car that in recent years had become relatively anonymous. While it cribs elements from recent Nissan efforts, most notably the Maxima, you’re not going to miss its new V face. You can argue with some of the details like its horse-collar of a grille (Edsel, anyone?), but it’s a cohesive design overall that’s as attractive and distinctive, possibly more so, than the new Accord or Camry—depending on your aesthetic viewpoint, of course.

On the inside, as you’d expect, the 2019 Altima is far more improved and refined. The most noticeable upgrade is its new prominent center touchscreen, which now measures at 8.0-inches and has large volume and tuning knobs. (Take it from Honda, you have to have those knobs.) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the system can cope with the speed both software systems need to operate. The fruits of Nissan’s Amazon Alexa partnership can also be experienced in the Altima. None of the materials inside felt terribly cheap, although there was still a quality disparity between the scratchy fabric and the plusher leather upholstery on the 8-way power driver’s seat. At least they were both comfortable. In highly-equipped trim levels with attractive materials and color combinations, the Altima is a nice place to be. All passengers are also likely to appreciate the four USB charging points scattered around the car.

Under the hood of the new 2019 Altima you’ll find two engine options. Nissan’s 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four remains the base engine. It’s essentially a carryover design, but Nissan says it has more than 80 percent new parts and uses direct injection among other refinements to deliver 188 horsepower, nine more horses than before. Every 2.5-liter model of the new Altima is now available with an optional all-wheel drive system with a 50:50 torque split in most situations, a first for a Nissan sedan and something that remains a relative rarity in this segment short of a Subaru lot. Front-wheel drive 2.5-liter models are rated at 27 mpg city/39 highway—up one in both categories. Adding all-wheel drive knocks those numbers down by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.

The big powertrain news for the 2019 Altima though is the addition of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Normally, that wouldn’t be much of a blockbuster as seemingly every car and crossover under the sun these days has a boosted four of the same displacement. But this isn’t just any old 2.0-liter turbo four; this is Nissan’s all-new VC-Turbo engine, which recently made its debut in the Infiniti QX50 crossover. While it’s down on power from the 3.5-liter V-6 it replaces, it offers more torque and the unit itself is lighter—putting less weight at the front of the car. Nissan has engineered the engine to be able to adjust compression ratios from 8:1 to 14:1, depending on whether the greatest performance or the greatest efficiency is needed. It also bests the old V-6’s EPA figures by as much as 3 mpg. One bummer though, the VC-Turbo isn’t available with all-wheel drive.

Underpinning the 2019 Altima is the same Renault-Nissan D platform as the outgoing model. The company’s engineers say it’s been extensively redesigned to make it more rigid and refined, to accommodate the all-wheel drive system, and to improve efficiency.

Despite all the boasting and the improvements and the promise of excitement, when it comes down to it we found the 2019 Altima drives a lot like the old model. Yes, there is a bit more refinement, and it’s certainly not offensive in any way, but no new ground is broken. Models equipped with the 2.5-liter and the CVT drive like, well, Nissans with CVTs and 2.5-liter engines. Power is relatively smooth and Nissan continues to refine its CVT, but you have to wonder how good the Altima might be if it were offered with a six-speed automatic that you still get in a Camry, or a small-displacement turbo and six-speeder as the Passat has. It’s worth noting both of those cars post similar fuel economy figures.

Most of our time however was spent in a top tier Altima Platinum with the new VC-Turbo making the power. While the old V-6 could be a fun engine when pushed, one could never really call it hushed or refined. That’s where the VC-Turbo shines. While the CVT can make the base engine dull to rev in certain situations, it seems to keep the turbo constantly awake, eliminating pretty much any perceptible lag. The VC-Turbo can also be had in the SR trim, which gets changes to the steering and ride in pursuit of that ever elusive “sportiness.” We drove an SR with the 2.5-liter front-drive setup and none of our sporting senses were turned on by the car. While the wheel sizes jump from the base 16-inchers to 19s on the SR models, grip seemed to be about the same as the softer setup. Our takeaway? While you can have a bit of fun in the VC-Turbo-equipped car, the Altima is tuned more for comfort and refinement than anything else, no matter how you option it.

It’s also tuned to be a safe car. The 2019 Altima is the latest Nissan to get the marque’s Pro Pilot Assist assistance technology that can keep the car centered on freeway lanes. With available adaptive cruise control and blind spot and lane keep assists, Nissan’s self-driving assist system was up there with similar technologies from luxury automakers when I tried it on the current Leaf and Rogue models. This may be another draw for customers comparing cars in this class. Features such as automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring are standard on all but the base Altimas, too.

As for pricing, the base S model starts at $24,645 including destination, with the top-level Platinum with the VC-Turbo going for $35,675. All-wheel-drive is a $1,350 option on all models with the 2.5-liter. These numbers fall pretty much in the middle of the mainstream sedan market.

And that’s where the Altima continues to land: in the middle. Despite the styling and promises of an exciting time behind the wheel, it remains a pragmatic automotive appliance more than anything else with good fuel economy, plenty of space, impressive tech options, and lots of standard equipment. Given that the Altima is now in the middle of an ever smaller pack, there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t continue to find buyers who value comfort and convenience over performance and handling. Honestly, that’s the majority of people in this segment, anyway.

At the Altima’s launch, the product representatives threw out the cringe worthy line, “not your parent’s car,” when describing their new baby. It has a little more truth to it now than it maybe did before—because your parents are more than likely driving a crossover. But we’re betting they at least know the Altima by name

Cheap and affordable vehicles used to mean owning a car that looks like a bar of soap and offers a driving experience best described as soulless. Now, small and/or inexpensive vehicles are far from basic transportation, and the 2018 Nissan Kicks is a great example. One the safety front, automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning are standard on all models, but blind-spot morning and rear cross-traffic alert are only available on the SV and SR grades. Standard features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen, three USB ports, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera.

The 2018 Nissan Kicks rides on the V platform, also used on the Versa, Versa Note, and Sentra. Its suspension features MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam out back. Unfortunately, this platform can’t support all-wheel drive, so Nissan’s smallest crossover is front-drive only. The SR grade is also the only model to come with the Integrated Dynamic-Control Module powertrain software, which adds Nissan’s Active Engine Brake, Active Trace Control, and Active Ride Control to improve the Kicks’ road manners.

Powered by a 1.6-liter I-4 with 125 hp and 115 lb-ft of torque paired to a CVT, the 2018 Nissan Kicks is far from a powerhouse. The engine is shared with the Versa and Versa Note but tuned for more power in the Kicks. With an EPA fuel economy rating 31/36 mpg city/highway, the Kicks’ efficiency is among the best in its segment. The test team will also put the Kicks through MotorTrend’s rigorous testing regime to see where its performance stands in its class. Our friends at EQUA Real MPG, on the other hand, will strap their equipment on the fun-sized crossover to see how efficient it is.

That’s because BMW decided to offer the same engine on the 750i as on the M850i model and that makes the flagship sedan quite fast rocket on public roads.

Of course, some customers weren’t happy to hear that. Most of them were owners of the pre-facelift 750i which, even though it uses roughly the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, comes with ‘just’ 450 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. It’s not a slow car by any means but the new iteration of the N63 engine does provide more grunt than ever. If you’re such an owner and you’re wondering what you could do about it, fret not as some tuners have a potential solution.

The guys from BR-Performance in Belgium have announced a Stage 1 upgrade for the BMW 750i which not only catches up to the latest version of the N63 engine power output but also kinda overshadows it. Their upgrade takes the power output up to 550 HP and 820 Nm (605 lb-ft) of torque and those figures are better than the 530 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of the updated 750i. As for how that translates into real-life performance, it remains to be seen as the tuner didn’t provide such info.

Nevertheless, what’s interesting is that this impressive performance increase is apparently achieved solely by re-writing the software on the ECU of the car, without any hardware upgrades. Whether that will affect your warranty depends on a number of factors so you’ll probably be better off with the standard, facelifted BMW 750i if you’re looking for a luxury sedan with over 500 HP.

First Drive: 2019 Nissan Altima

SANTA BARBARA, California – There are a handful of midsize sedans out there whose names have become ubiquitous in the modern era, with the Altima being one of them. In its quarter century on the market, the made in America Altima has grown into a huge sales success for Nissan and a credible foil for the likes of the middleweight title holders Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

But while it’s all well and good to have name recognition, that’s certainly no guarantee of success in today’s bread-and-butter sedan segment—one that has been getting crushed in favor of crossovers. The Ford Fusion is essentially on life support, and the likes of the Hyundai Sonata, Mazda6, and Volkswagen Passat have all seen their share of the sales pie shrink. If you want your sedan to survive in today’s landscape, you better bring it when you bring out a new model like the sixth-generation, 2019 Nissan Altima.

Though Nissan is outwardly bullish on the Altima’s future, it’s clear that it wanted—in some ways needed—to make a bold, aggressive exterior design statement to draw notice to a car that in recent years had become relatively anonymous. While it cribs elements from recent Nissan efforts, most notably the Maxima, you’re not going to miss its new V face. You can argue with some of the details like its horse-collar of a grille (Edsel, anyone?), but it’s a cohesive design overall that’s as attractive and distinctive, possibly more so, than the new Accord or Camry—depending on your aesthetic viewpoint, of course.

On the inside, as you’d expect, the 2019 Altima is far more improved and refined. The most noticeable upgrade is its new prominent center touchscreen, which now measures at 8.0-inches and has large volume and tuning knobs. (Take it from Honda, you have to have those knobs.) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the system can cope with the speed both software systems need to operate. The fruits of Nissan’s Amazon Alexa partnership can also be experienced in the Altima. None of the materials inside felt terribly cheap, although there was still a quality disparity between the scratchy fabric and the plusher leather upholstery on the 8-way power driver’s seat. At least they were both comfortable. In highly-equipped trim levels with attractive materials and color combinations, the Altima is a nice place to be. All passengers are also likely to appreciate the four USB charging points scattered around the car.

Under the hood of the new 2019 Altima you’ll find two engine options. Nissan’s 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four remains the base engine. It’s essentially a carryover design, but Nissan says it has more than 80 percent new parts and uses direct injection among other refinements to deliver 188 horsepower, nine more horses than before. Every 2.5-liter model of the new Altima is now available with an optional all-wheel drive system with a 50:50 torque split in most situations, a first for a Nissan sedan and something that remains a relative rarity in this segment short of a Subaru lot. Front-wheel drive 2.5-liter models are rated at 27 mpg city/39 highway—up one in both categories. Adding all-wheel drive knocks those numbers down by 1 and 2 mpg, respectively.

The big powertrain news for the 2019 Altima though is the addition of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Normally, that wouldn’t be much of a blockbuster as seemingly every car and crossover under the sun these days has a boosted four of the same displacement. But this isn’t just any old 2.0-liter turbo four; this is Nissan’s all-new VC-Turbo engine, which recently made its debut in the Infiniti QX50 crossover. While it’s down on power from the 3.5-liter V-6 it replaces, it offers more torque and the unit itself is lighter—putting less weight at the front of the car. Nissan has engineered the engine to be able to adjust compression ratios from 8:1 to 14:1, depending on whether the greatest performance or the greatest efficiency is needed. It also bests the old V-6’s EPA figures by as much as 3 mpg. One bummer though, the VC-Turbo isn’t available with all-wheel drive.

Underpinning the 2019 Altima is the same Renault-Nissan D platform as the outgoing model. The company’s engineers say it’s been extensively redesigned to make it more rigid and refined, to accommodate the all-wheel drive system, and to improve efficiency.

Despite all the boasting and the improvements and the promise of excitement, when it comes down to it we found the 2019 Altima drives a lot like the old model. Yes, there is a bit more refinement, and it’s certainly not offensive in any way, but no new ground is broken. Models equipped with the 2.5-liter and the CVT drive like, well, Nissans with CVTs and 2.5-liter engines. Power is relatively smooth and Nissan continues to refine its CVT, but you have to wonder how good the Altima might be if it were offered with a six-speed automatic that you still get in a Camry, or a small-displacement turbo and six-speeder as the Passat has. It’s worth noting both of those cars post similar fuel economy figures.

Most of our time however was spent in a top tier Altima Platinum with the new VC-Turbo making the power. While the old V-6 could be a fun engine when pushed, one could never really call it hushed or refined. That’s where the VC-Turbo shines. While the CVT can make the base engine dull to rev in certain situations, it seems to keep the turbo constantly awake, eliminating pretty much any perceptible lag. The VC-Turbo can also be had in the SR trim, which gets changes to the steering and ride in pursuit of that ever elusive “sportiness.” We drove an SR with the 2.5-liter front-drive setup and none of our sporting senses were turned on by the car. While the wheel sizes jump from the base 16-inchers to 19s on the SR models, grip seemed to be about the same as the softer setup. Our takeaway? While you can have a bit of fun in the VC-Turbo-equipped car, the Altima is tuned more for comfort and refinement than anything else, no matter how you option it.

It’s also tuned to be a safe car. The 2019 Altima is the latest Nissan to get the marque’s Pro Pilot Assist assistance technology that can keep the car centered on freeway lanes. With available adaptive cruise control and blind spot and lane keep assists, Nissan’s self-driving assist system was up there with similar technologies from luxury automakers when I tried it on the current Leaf and Rogue models. This may be another draw for customers comparing cars in this class. Features such as automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring are standard on all but the base Altimas, too.

As for pricing, the base S model starts at $24,645 including destination, with the top-level Platinum with the VC-Turbo going for $35,675. All-wheel-drive is a $1,350 option on all models with the 2.5-liter. These numbers fall pretty much in the middle of the mainstream sedan market.

And that’s where the Altima continues to land: in the middle. Despite the styling and promises of an exciting time behind the wheel, it remains a pragmatic automotive appliance more than anything else with good fuel economy, plenty of space, impressive tech options, and lots of standard equipment. Given that the Altima is now in the middle of an ever smaller pack, there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t continue to find buyers who value comfort and convenience over performance and handling. Honestly, that’s the majority of people in this segment, anyway.

At the Altima’s launch, the product representatives threw out the cringe worthy line, “not your parent’s car,” when describing their new baby. It has a little more truth to it now than it maybe did before—because your parents are more than likely driving a crossover. But we’re betting they at least know the Altima by name
