#State Route 109

childless cat lady painting by Dorothea Tanning.

A piece in the New Yorker fact-checks anti-divorce dude JD Vance's Hillbilly Elegy (and finds out his grandmother filed for divorce in the 1950s and his grandfather did so in 1981; the couple ended up legally separated) but the really important takeaway for me was: "As no-fault divorce became the norm in state after state, domestic-violence rates dropped by some thirty per cent, suicides among women dropped by as much as sixteen per cent, and the number of women murdered by their partners dropped by ten per cent."
In other words, feminism saves lives (including men's; a significant portion of women's spousal homicide is self-defense). Providing better recourse/escape routes benefits everyone, as does delegitimizing domestic violence, recognizing coercive control, and establishing that men and women are equal under the law and in every other way--in other words, that he has no right to do it.
It's feminism that did a lot of the work to bring us no-fault divorce. Here's a 1992 profile of one such woman:
"In her nearly 32 years as a professor at the University of California at Berkeley's School of Law (Boalt Hall), she has cajoled, wheedled, lobbied and persuaded in her mission to use the law to end sex-based discrimination, by reputation combining clear-eyed logic and flawless legal research with impeccable manners.
"How to make trouble without being a troublemaker, that describes my style," Ms. Kay said in an interview this week. "I think that if you are going to help build an institution, you have to be careful not to destroy it in the process."
"Now, long after many people say they expected her to get the job, Ms. Kay, 57 years old, has been named dean of Boalt Hall, the first woman to hold the position. For the female lawyers and law professors who were her students or who know her through her book and other writings on sex discrimination, Professor Kay is a "patron saint" and "godmother," and her appointment is a sweet victory.
"Over the years, Ms. Kay has become a leading scholar in family law and was an author of no-fault divorce legislation that has been adopted in California and other states. She has been a major force in bringing women into law schools and sending them out on graduation to use law to achieve social change.
"After graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Southern Methodist University, Ms. Kay entered the University of Chicago Law School. She graduated in 1959, one of three women in a class of 109 students."
Which is also a reminder of how profoundly feminism remade the law and how much Vance and the Republican Party preach regression to almost every form of inequality.
But we still need more feminism because as a recent editorial in the Washington Post states: "One U.S. study found women are twice as likely as men to be convicted of a crime after claiming self-defense; the odds are even worse for a woman of color."
Likewise, restraining orders are a weak tool often not enforced against homicidal spouses intent on punishing women for leaving. Spouses who've often committed earlier violence that went unpunished. Feminism's work continues.

Chapter 201 Trivia (Part 1)
Are we renaming Why-man to Do-you-wanna-die-man now?
Tumblr media
Senku's holding a jet engine turbine here, and both of them are missing the equation on their capes!
Suika is dressed closer to Senku than usual, as they have matching wristbands and her hair turns green towards the "leaf" end.
Tumblr media
The whale here looks like a North Atlantic right whale, though if the KoS is taking the direct route to Europe then that whale is very far south compared to its usual habitat.
The fish look like bluefin tuna, which are found all over the North Atlantic ocean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The sailfish is especially shocked here because they're possibly the fastest fish in the ocean, able to reach speeds up to 109 kph.
The Perseus' cruising speed was only stated as 37 kph however, so the fish is still much faster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Titanic reference? Or simply the best thing to do when on the front deck of a ship?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gen finally gets his ice-cold cola, while Chelsea and Suika receive kakigōri, a sweet shaved ice treat with highly customisable toppings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Francois adores the freezer and I adore Francois. I can't wait to see what they cook up next!
Tumblr media
Team 2 is the only team without a member who knows Morse code already on it, which is why Ukyo's classroom only consists of people going to Corn City. This is also why Kohaku was fine learning it on the journey rather than alongside everyone else here.
Tumblr media
Senku's using a modernised version of their earlier cellphones, also known as a tranceiver (transmitter+receiver).
Kohaku's also finally learning how to write!
Tumblr media
If you're unfamiliar with Japanese, they use several different writing systems, but the one Ukyo mentions here is the one that uses Roman script (hence, romaji). Ukyo claims you only need to know 14 characters to use Morse with this but it doesn't seem correct unless you misspell and also ignore daukon (same characters with an emphasis, changing the pronounciation, e.g. "ku" becoming "gu")
My assumption is that he just added the number of rows to the columns..? Though you'd still need more letters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Team 2 is traveling to Corn City by boat! It looks like it's another wooden boat, possibly similar to the first Perseus in terms of locomotion, but on a smaller scale.
Also, Hyoga obviously doesn't understand that Taiju has surpassed the need for cellphones.
Tumblr media
Luna claims she'll build the bridge between Brody and the KoS, however she doesn't even speak Japanese.
In fact, the only one on team 2 who speaks both languages to a decent standard is Ukyo, which means reviving Nikki will likely be a priority.
Tumblr media
I guess this somehow helps her practice her spelling..?
Also how is she keeping up with the speed of the boat in order to catch fish if the boat travels at the same speed she travels on land?

Bird Flu Has Infected a Third U.S. Farmworker
A third farmworker in the United States has been found to be infected with bird flu, heightening concerns about an outbreak among dairy cattle first identified in March. The worker is the first in this outbreak to have respiratory symptoms, including a cough, sore throat and watery eyes, which generally increase the likelihood of transmission to other people, federal officials said on Thursday. The other two people had only severe eye infections, possibly because of exposure to contaminated milk. All three individuals had direct exposure to dairy cows, and so far none has spread the virus to other people, Dr. Nirav Shah, principal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said at a news briefing. That suggests that the virus, called H5N1, has not acquired the ability to spread among people and that the threat to the general public remains low, Dr. Shah said. “This newest case does not change the C.D.C.’s H5N1 influenza risk assessment level for the general public,” he added. “We should remain alert, not be alarmed.” But the case does highlight the ongoing risk to farm workers, Dr. Shah said: “Our top priority now across this response is protecting the health of farmworkers.” This case is the second in Michigan, but the individual worked on a different farm than did the worker diagnosed last week. All three infected people so far have been treated with the antiviral medication oseltamivir, sometimes marketed as Tamiflu, officials said. There were few other details available, disappointing some experts. “There is no excuse for the lack of testing, transparency and trust,” said Rick Bright, the chief executive of Bright Global Health, a consulting company that focuses on improving responses to public health emergencies. He noted that federal officials are “months behind sharing virus sequence data.” “This is how pandemics start,” he said. The identification of a third case is not surprising because farm workers interact closely with dairy cows, experts said. New flu viruses often provoke respiratory symptoms without further spread to other people, Dr. Shah said. This latest patient may have had different symptoms because of the exposure dose, a different exposure route, predisposing genetic or medical factors or a combination of those attributes, said Angela Rasmussen, a research scientist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Still, gaining more information about how the person was infected, and about whether the virus has evolved to infect people more readily, is crucial, she said. Genetic analysis of the virus infecting the worker may be difficult because the amount obtained from the patient was very low. “But every time the virus is able to replicate in a person, there is potential for the virus to adapt to humans and gain molecular features for replication in the respiratory tract and to spread person-to-person,” said Seema Lakdawala, a virologist at Emory University in Atlanta. Officials are monitoring about 350 people who may have been exposed, about 220 of them in Michigan alone. So far relatively few farmworkers, about 40, have consented to testing. The Agriculture Department announced on Thursday that it was setting aside $824 million in new funding to quickly detect cases in poultry and livestock. The department is also starting a voluntary program for producers to test bulk milk, enabling them to transport virus-free herds across state lines without having to test individual cows. Federal researchers have completed their analysis of 109 beef samples, and found virus in just one, reported last week, officials said at the briefing. Federal officials could be doing more to protect farm workers and the public, experts said. “Vaccines from the national stockpile should be released for veterinarians and dairy farm workers willing to take it,” Dr. Lakdawala said. “We have an opportunity to reduce human infections and we need to do it now.” Source link via The Novum Times

Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies Swap Lance Stephenson and Jeff Green
Tumblr media
On February 18th, 2016, the Los Angeles Clippers traded guard-forward Lance Stephenson and a 2019 first round draft pick (Matisse Thybulle) to the Memphis Grizzlies for forward Jeff Green.
The Memphis Grizzlies were always in search of a wing. The team had a trusted trio in center Marc Gasol, point guard Mike Conley and power forward Zach Randolph. But the team always seemed to lack a small forward that could space the floor, score and defend.
Looking to add talent, the Grizzlies acquired forward Jeff Green from the Boston Celtics in a three-team deal also involving the New Orleans Pelicans. The hope was that he could fill in that role as a scorer on the wing.
Green played 45 games after being traded to Memphis. He managed 13.1 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.8 APG, 0.6 SPG and 0.5 BPG in 30.2 MPG. Green quickly became a starter after coming off the bench initially. The Grizzlies continued to win after acquiring Green, taking 15 of the next 18 games to reach 41-14. Memphis was one of the top teams in the NBA, finishing the season with a 55-27 record.
In the 2015 playoffs, Memphis was in fifth place and battled the fourth seed Portland Trail Blazers. The Grizzlies had homecourt advantage because they had a better overall record than the Blazers (51-31).
Portland had numerous injuries going into the playoffs. Starting two guard Wesley Matthews was out for the season after rupturing his achilles tendon in early March. Trade deadline acquisition Arron Afflalo had a shoulder injury and stars LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum had thumb and wrist ailments respectively.
The Grizzlies had an early double digit lead in the first quarter of Game One and led by as much as 29 points in a 100-86 win. Game Two saw Memphis hold the Blazers to 39% shooting in an easy 97-82 victory.
In the third contest, the Grizzlies continued to have control. Memphis led by double digits for most of the game, including 14 points late in the third quarter. Portland brought the deficit down to three points late in the fourth, but Memphis held on for a 115-109 win.
The Grizzlies took a 3-0 series lead but suffered misfortune when point guard Mike Conley had a facial fracture near his left eye in the game. He would miss the rest of the first round.
Memphis was headed to a sweep after taking a ten-point lead with 8:48 left in the fourth quarter of Game Four. Portland recovered, going on a 29-12 run to take the game 99-92 and avoid a sweep. In Game Five, the duo of Gasol and Courtney Lee combined for 46 points as Memphis won 99-93. In the five-game matchup, Green struggled, shooting 26.9% while averaging 9.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.6 APG and 0.8 BPG in 25.3 MPG.
The Grizzlies battled the number one seed Golden State Warriors in the next round. With Conley still out at the start of the series, Golden State took Game One easily 101-86. Conley returned for Game Two. He had 22 points as Memphis evened the series 1-1 with a 97-90 victory.
In Memphis, the Grizzlies got a combined 43 points and 23 rebounds from Randolph and Gasol in Game Three. They led for much of the game, winning 99-89.
Facing a 2-1 series deficit and MVP Stephen Curry struggling from the field, the Warriors regrouped, making an adjustment. Golden State had center Andrew Bogut defend guard and limited shooter Tony Allen. The move gummed up Memphis' offense, clogging the paint.
Curry had 33 points in Game Four as Golden State won in a 101-84 rout. The Warriors led by 17 points after three quarters in Game Five and held on for a 98-78 win. Curry had 32 points and 10 assists in Game Six as Golden State cruised to a 108-95 victory, eliminating the Grizzlies in six games. During the second round loss, Green managed just 8.7 PPG on 39.3% from the field, 4.0 RPG, 1.8 APG and 0.5 SPG in 28.6 MPG.
After Memphis' second round loss, the club added forward Matt Barnes in an offseason trade with the Charlotte Hornets. The Grizzlies also added center Brandan Wright as a free agent. Green had a chance to test free agency but exercised his $9.2 million player option to stay in Memphis.
The Grizzlies had a rough start to the 2015-16 season, dropping the season opener to the Cleveland Cavaliers by 30 points. Then, there was the 119-69 drubbing at the hands of the Golden State Warriors three games later.
The Grizzlies were just 3-6 after nine games but won 8 of the next 10 to rise to 11-8. Memphis hovered around .500 for much of the next month and a half before a 12-4 stretch brought the team to 31-22 at the All-Star break. Around that time, center Marc Gasol suffered a fractured right foot which would keep him out for the rest of the season.
With the 2016 offseason looming, the Grizzlies knew two key free agents in Courtney Lee and Green would be hard to re-sign. Instead of facing the prospect of losing both players, the Grizzlies dealt Lee to the Charlotte Hornets on February 16 and subsequently sent Green to the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline buzzer on February 18.
Green was in and out of the Memphis starting lineup during 2015-16. The forward played in 53 games (31 starts), compiling 12.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.8 APG and 0.8 SPG in 29.1 MPG.
Green continued his routine of enticing teams with jaw-dropping athleticism and scoring ability but in the same breath frustrating them with below average three-point shooting and inconsistent play. His lack of outward passion frustrated teammates on the Grizzlies.
Memphis had a better net rating when Green was off the floor versus when he was on in both seasons. But still, Green did have his moments like a game-winner against the Phoenix Suns in December 2015.
youtube
In 98 games with the Grizzlies, Green contributed 12.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 1.8 APG and 0.7 SPG. In that time, the forward shot 43% from the field, 34% from the three-point line and 81% from the free-throw line.
Tumblr media
Lance Stephenson joined the Los Angeles Clippers when he was acquired in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets for Matt Barnes and Spencer Hawes.
Stephenson was coming off a disappointing season in Charlotte. It was the first season of a brand new three-year, $27 million deal with a team option in the final year. Stephenson failed to blend in with Hornets star Kemba Walker on offense and struggled.
With the Clippers, there was hope for him to resuscitate his career as a defender who could bring extra ball-handling and toughness to the Clippers rotation. If not, the Clippers could cut bait and move on.
Stephenson's acquisition was a piece of a Clippers retool around the edges. Core pieces like Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and Chris Paul remained, but the Clippers tried to shore up the supporting cast. The team signed forward Josh Smith and guard Pablo Prigioni from the Houston Rockets. It also re-signed guard Austin Rivers and agreed to deals with Paul Pierce, Wesley Johnson and Cole Aldrich.
Initially, Stephenson started at small forward for the first nine games, but his minutes eventually started to wildly fluctuate. First, he played just one minute and 42 seconds in a win against the Detroit Pistons despite the Clippers playing without starting backcourt players Chris Paul and JJ Redick.
Stephenson then received a DNP-coach's decision from head coach Doc Rivers the next game against the Golden State Warriors. He played just under 19 minutes of action as a starter against Portland the next game. That would be his last start as a Clipper.
His minutes continued to fluctuate and he largely struggled with the Clippers, registering just 4.7 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 1.4 APG and 0.7 SPG in 43 contests and 15.8 MPG before he was traded at the 2016 trade deadline. The Clippers were 35-18 when they decided to trade Stephenson.
The deal happened minutes before the trade deadline, with Memphis and the Clippers swapping Green and Stephenson. The Clippers also sent Memphis a protected first round pick.
Tumblr media
After the trade, Green joined a Clippers team missing a star forward Blake Griffin. The All-Star was out with a partially torn left quad and a fractured hand. Green was set to help add depth to the frontcourt.
At 35-18 at the trade deadline, the Clippers went 18-11 the rest of the way to finish fourth in the West with a 53-29 record. Green appeared in 27 games (10 starts) and amassed 10.9 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.7 SPG and 0.9 BPG in 26.3 MPG.
Heading into the 2016 postseason, the Clippers were heavily favored in their first round matchup against the 44-38 Portland Trail Blazers. In the first game, Chris Paul had 28 points and 11 assists and Griffin had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Clippers cruised to a 115-95 rout.
In Game Two, the Clippers bench outscored Portland's reserves 43-10 and pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 2-0 series lead with a 102-81 victory. Neither team could make a shot from the three-point line in Game Three. Portland's duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum combined for 59 points and forward Mo Harkless had two late baskets to help Portland win 96-88.
Game Four changed the entire trajectory of the series and Los Angeles' season. In the third quarter, Paul broke his right hand swiping down at a Gerald Henderson drive. Soon after, Griffin re-aggravated his left quad ending his season prematurely.
Portland pulled away in the game, outscoring the Clippers 32-20 in the fourth quarter. Portland won 98-84. In the fifth game, McCollum had 27 points and Lillard scored 16 of his 22 points as Portland pulled away late to win 108-98.
Despite missing Paul and Griffin, and facing a 3-2 deficit, the Clippers hung tough in Game Six. Portland never took a double digit lead. Late in the game, Clippers guard Jamal Crawford tied the game 103-103 after making two free-throws with 32 seconds remaining.
On the next possession, McCollum missed a runner, but Blazers center Mason Plumlee was fouled on an offensive rebound by Green and the Clippers were in the penalty. He made both free-throws. Crawford missed a floater with two seconds left and Plumlee rebounded the miss and was fouled again.
The Blazers big man split a pair of free-throws, giving Portland a 106-103 lead with two seconds left. With no timeouts left, Paul Pierce inbounded the ball to Austin Rivers who missed a desperation three as Portland held on for the win and eliminated the Clippers 4-2.
In six playoff games with the Clippers, Green mustered 10.2 PPG on 45.7% from the field, 3.2 RPG, 0.7 APG and 1.0 SPG in 26.5 MPG. In the 2016 offseason, Green became an unrestricted free agent and left the Clippers, signing a one-year, $15 million deal with the Orlando Magic.
Tumblr media
Stephenson was given more consistent playing time upon arriving in Memphis. Injuries befell the Grizzlies as center Marc Gasol remained out and point guard Mike Conley ended up missing most of the second half of the season with an achilles issue.
The Grizzlies limped to the regular season finish line, going 11-18 after the trade deadline to finish 42-40 and seventh in the West. Stephenson appeared in 26 games with the Grizzlies, managing 14.2 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.8 APG and 0.7 SPG in 26.6 MPG.
Memphis was decimated with injuries heading into its 2016 playoff run. With Conley and Gasol both out, the Grizzlies went into a difficult first round matchup with the 67-15 San Antonio Spurs.
Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard had 20 points and San Antonio used a 33-14 third quarter edge to put away the Grizzlies in a 106-74 rout. Game Two was similar. Memphis shot just 32.6% from the field and 13.3% from three in a 94-68 loss.
The series location shifted to Memphis. The Grizzlies had just 10 players available, but managed to have brief moments where they led. The Grizzlies won the second and third quarters after losing the first nine of the series. In the fourth quarter, both teams traded leads before the Spurs used a 7-0 run to gain control. Memphis stayed in the game but San Antonio hung on for a 96-87 victory.
In the fourth game, Leonard had 21 points and the Spurs put the game away with a 37-21 third quarter advantage. San Antonio won the game 116-95 and swept the Grizzlies in four games. In the four-game series, Stephenson was effective, averaging 13.0 PPG on 52.3% from the field, 1.5 RPG and 1.8 APG in 23.0 MPG. Stephenson had 26 points in the final game.
youtube
The Grizzlies declined Stephenson's $9.4 million team option for the 2016-17 season so they could free up some cap space in free agency. Stephenson became an unrestricted free agent and went on to sign a contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.
The first round pick the Clippers sent to Memphis was lottery-protected in 2019 and 2020. It would become a second round pick in 2022 if it was not conveyed in either of the first two years.
The rights to the pick were traded to the Boston Celtics for the 31st and 35th picks in the 2016 NBA Draft Deyonta Davis and Rade Zagorac. In 2019, the pick was 20th overall and Celtics selected forward Matisse Thybulle. On the same day, Boston traded Thybulle to the 76ers for the 24th pick (Ty Jerome) and 33rd pick (Carsen Edwards).
Tumblr media
Jeff Green on joining the Clippers (via LA Times):
"I am going to a great situation. Having played two years with [head coach] Doc [Rivers] and knowing what he expects from his players is big."
On the Clippers roster:
"This is definitely a team with all the right pieces and a team that is going in the right direction. The only thing I want to do is win and that’s what it’s all about right now."
Lance Stephenson looking back at his most recent struggles with the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers (via Memphis Commercial Appeal):
"Certain teams, you just don't fit in. I've definitely got something to prove. I just want to get back to my old self, get back to playing in a rotation and helping my teammates win. God is good, so wherever He guides me, I'm going to try my best to figure it out."
On joining the Grizzlies:
"On this team, you've just got to play hard and be in attack mode. You don't have to think too much, you've just got to play hard."
Memphis Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace on a busy trade deadline (via Memphis Commercial Appeal):
"The job of management is to straddle the line of getting the team to win in the short term and take care of the future. When you have as many unrestricted free agents as we did, you’re not going to be able to sign all of them. The idea was to get something without these guys being able to walk away for nothing."
Los Angeles Clippers president of basketball operations and head coach Doc Rivers on the trade (via ESPN):
"I really didn't know if the trade was done because I didn't want to look at my phone."
On Lance Stephenson:
"The guy was great, and guys really liked him. I was really happy with him as far as how he carried himself."
How he gave the go ahead on the trade ahead of a funeral service for Monty Williams' wife, Ingrid (via ESPN):
"I basically told Dave, 'Yes,' and walked in. "I really didn't know if the trade was done or not, because I didn't want to look at my phone. When the service was over I looked at my phone and saw that we had pulled a trade."
Clippers guard Jamal Crawford on the addition of Green (via LA Times):
"Jeff, with his size and athleticism, the way he slashes and can guard multiple positions. It definitely helps us."

“And so then I said, ‘Actually, your account doesn’t supercede everyone’s here!’”
Riyo realized belatedly that Senator Drythe believed his comment to be some kind of punchline and she forced out a simpering laugh.
He was so in her personal space that it was taking a constant, conscious effort to not lean to the far side of her dinner chair. Worse still that her political strategy for the evening dictated that she now tilt her head towards him and ask a follow up question. She had serious reservations that if their faces got any closer the frustrated screaming in her head would verbalize itself.
The Chancellor’s dinner was a prime opportunity for her to make friends with the swing voters on the relief bill scheduled for next week. If Pantorans were forced to narrow their meager rations again, her people would begin to starve. She needed to convince more senators that the Republic funds were worth the resources to feed her people while the war blocked their supply routes on her outer rim planet. Didn’t Republic politicians understand that saving people from the Separatist control was actually pointless if they died of starvation during the process? Not enough of them did.
Which brought her to Senator Drythe. Wealthy, influential, tenured senator of cush, inner-rim Fenlaith. When she had discovered he would be her dinner partner at the beginning of the evening she had believed herself lucky. More than an hour into forced laughs and batted eyelashes as he monologued his favorite political exploits, inching ever closer to her, and she now wondered if suffering through this would fail to reward her with getting a word in at all.
To just royally top off the entire debacle, the Chancellor had taken precautions against the increased frequency of bounty hunter attacks and ordered that the safety of the dinner guests be overseen by the Coruscant Guard rather than just the Senate Guard. Her “lucky” seating arrangements had her positioned directly across and slightly to the right from where none other than Marshal Commander Fox was standing guard. He and his squad stood unmoving at textbook attention around the perimeter of the cozy dining room but she knew he was taking in every detail. And given that the last time they had both had a moment off at the same time—regrettably more than three weeks ago—they’d spent it entwined in a state of dishabille with one another, she felt relatively confident that at least a portion of his attention was on her and her dinner partner.
“You know, Riyo—can I call you Riyo?—,” Drythe angled his body towards hers, his knee finally making contact with her own under the table. “I bet there’s more to you than that quiet face suggests.”
She forced her expression from becoming wooden. This is hell, she thought. I have literally died and I am now in hell. Goddess, please forgive me my past transgressions.
“Please, Senator, I could—”
“—Call me Gerek,” he interrupted.
Do it for your people! She screamed internally. “...Gerek, ” she said aloud, fluttering her gaze at him, “I could hardly have been elected Senator of Pantora without the capacity to speak passionately on their behalf.” Like I literally did in front of you and the rest of the Senate just this afternoon. “Being the voice of—”
“Oh ho! Of course! That reminds me of my own election! It was against the leader of a very vocal extremist group and…”
-----
Riyo closed the door to her apartment gently with a soft click before leaning exhaustedly against it. Three hours, she thought, staring emptily at her ceiling. Three hours of self-debasement and political flattery and for what?
With a disgusted sigh, she pushed herself from her door and set her keys on the dining table.
Marris, her handservant, came swiftly around the corner. “Welcome home, Senator, did you have a nice evening?”
“It was...awful,” she responded. She felt exhausted with shame and humiliation. “I’m going to take a shower.” As if water could wash away what she was feeling. I can pretend.
“Oh dear, I’m so sorry to hear that.” Marris followed her into her bedroom and waited for her to sit at her vanity. “Was no one willing to listen?” she asked, as she began to remove Riyo’s hairpins.
Marris had been employed by Riyo’s family for years before Riyo had been elected senator and moved to Coruscant and, despite being younger than her own mother, she exuded maternal comfort. The loose outline of her suffocating evening in the presence of Drythe came tumbling out to Marris’s sympathetic tutting. “...and then we were two of the last people to leave because he literally would not stop talking.”
Her dress came off next and Riyo caught a whiff of Drythe’s cologne as Marris helped lift it over her head. “Ugh,” she gagged. “Bag it for dry cleaning.”
Marris was clearly holding in a smile but her eyes remained full of compassion. “That he found you such a captive audience, I’m sure didn’t hurt your goals for the bill. Maybe it will look different in the morning.”
Riyo managed a weak smile before stepping into the bathroom and starting the hot water. She hadn’t mentioned Fox to Marris because she wasn’t sure Marris knew how serious their relationship had become, but having omitted him from her tale made the gnawing guilt when she thought about him that much more noticeable now. As if not even mentioning him meant his feelings really didn’t matter. She wanted to message him. She should message him. But what would she even say? Sorry I flirted with a powerful creep while you were forced to watch for hours? Sorry you must now think I’m a disgusting flake with horrible taste in men? Would he even respond?
If she had been the one forced to watch him flirt with someone else all night while she held her tongue, she would have been a mess. Every layer that she uncovered of Fox revealed a new reason that he kept distance from the people around him. Her heart physically ached at the notion that she might give him reasons to doubt her too. I’m so, so sorry.
She tried to force her thoughts away from him. Maybe Marris was right and this would all look better in the morning.
The real problem was that Marris was right about all of it and it was her own damn reaction that was what was wrong with the night. She should be thrilled about her evening with Drythe. Through the lens of her career, the evening was a resounding success! Acknowledging this only increased her frustration and she took a slow breath of the steamy shower air to try to ease the tightness in her chest. Building his ego was seventy-five percent of the battle and this was, technically, exactly where she should want him. Some politicians don’t like to talk about work during “social hours” and this wretched evening will hopefully have made him more receptive to her when she could—ugh—talk to him again tomorrow during working hours. Her whole body rejected the idea and she squeezed her eyes shut. I can’t. She wrapped her arms around herself as the hot water beat heavily down on her. Maybe she wasn’t as cut out for this as she thought.
She had been raised to be a politician nearly her whole life and few circumstances had penetrated the thick skin she had developed, but this felt different and she suspected it had everything to do with Fox. In fact, she’d never had a problem with the social maneuvering required of being a politician until she’d begun falling—really falling—for Fox. She just so strongly admired how he was so direct and steadfast and action-oriented that she couldn’t help but look at her own world of manipulation, subterfuge, and endless talking as shameful by comparison. She’d seen firsthand how the meandering crawl of Senate productivity directly disadvantaged the very soldiers that allowed them to maintain this body of government. For her to then participate in lavish dinners that encapsulated the entire wretched process in full display of said disadvantaged clones, who were her personal friends, made her entirely complicit. The shame she had been experiencing all evening piqued as she was finally able to name it.
She shut the water off, still undecided on whether to call him, and wrapped her massive, fluffy towel around herself. My duty is to my people, not to my heart, she reminded herself. She could hear her mother’s sternly practical voice echoing in her mind, “Love is a luxury, Riyo, and your actions always need to serve those you lead before they serve yourself.” The sigh that issued from her lips was lonesome, leached of the frustration that had dominated her evening. If betraying Fox and betraying my heart saves the life of even just one of my people, I must do it. Whether she felt good about it didn’t matter; her feelings, hanging in the balance of the lives she advocated for, couldn’t tip the scales.
From the bathroom counter, her comm blinked with a message waiting. The banner notification only informed her it was from Fox and she felt a nervous jolt pulse through her.  Rip the band-aid off, Riyo, she steeled herself. Delaying the inevitable doesn’t change it.

Nemik and Skeen, Cassian’s shadow selves as Clem and Kassa, died at the same time.
I love me a good foil character, and Skeen was set up nicely as one to Clem. Clem, Andor’s mercenary self, exhibiting many of the traits we see in Skeen that can all be summed up with the line “Everyone’s fighting their own rebellion.” We’ve seen this side of Andor in his exhausted oppression under the empire, his flight from Ferrix, his need to survive, and in doing this mission for the money.
But we’ve also seen him as Kassa, a member of a community, and a loving protector of his sister. And we see Kassa’s very real anger against the colonialism of the Empire as he shatters the pristine console of the ship on Kenari. Cassian is the perfect audience for Nemik’s manifesto because he’s lived that state of oppression his entire life until he became Clem out of sheer mental survival. “Do I look thankful to you?”
Skeen and Nemik die at the same time, and Cassian finally merges his two shadow selves within him. Killing Skeen, to protect himself but also to protect Vel, Nemik, and by extent Luthen’s rebellion; and then leaving with his share in order to survive, while also accepting the manifesto. Cassian is neither fully Clem nor Kassa but he is both of them, and this is the first glimpse that we see of that fully realized version of himself that we know from Rogue One.

I am completely moved by the fact that Nemik’s description of how both oppression and rebellion manifest are effectively the same despite being at opposite ends of the spectrum. I’m talking about control versus freedom and the comparison of these two lines:
“It’s easier to hide behind 40 atrocities than a single incident.”
Versus
“Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy.”
In the first, it is the deluge that is numbing and exhausting but in the second, the deluge becomes a movement. Every act of rebellion inspires more and more acts, and the true beauty of Nemik’s vision of rebellion is that it’s not coordinated. It’s entropy, it’s the call of freedom inside every individual, it’s every individual that becomes a collective. The constant rain becomes a flood that lifts all ships.
Oppression is exhausting but rebellion can exhaust oppression right back. And Nemik’s vision is so inspiring because he specifically identifies why the collective is the more powerful force.
For the Empire to have such tight control, it has to act as a single entity, but we’ve seen the internal discord in trying to exert control throughout the entire show, from the rivalry between Dedra and Blevin, all the way down to Dedra having to constantly repeat to the Ferrix ground unit that she wants Andor alive. These are the leaks and breaks that Nemik refers to. Oppression is constant effort; freedom is innate. And where the Empire is a single entity, the frontier of the rebellion is everywhere.
And what a message for a show to have in this era.

Wa(te)r Born
Inspired by this post by @cobaltbeam. AO3 link here.
Rex isn’t unfamiliar with water. None of the clones are. Water is the only world they know until they’re conscripted into the war. But he’s never seen it quite like this.
On Kamino, water is an angry thing. The drumming waves and unyielding typhoons of the surface beat the song of a vengeful god hellbent on destroying those who defy it. Under the surface is no better. If the dark waters pull you beneath the violence of the waves, then the cold, the pressure, or the demons of the deep will each try to claim you before the water itself invariably takes you as its own. Water is a force to be survived.
But here, standing on the beach of a lagoon worlds away from Kamino, Rex thinks maybe he doesn’t know water after all. The ocean is as blue as a jewel and the way it glitters with the sun might be the prettiest thing he’s ever seen. The sound it makes as it laps gently against the white beach is a sigh that uncurls something in him he hadn’t realized he had been clenching.
Before he realizes what he’s doing, he has snapped off the armor below his knees and is rolling up his blacks. The sand is curiously soft. He didn’t know sand could be anything except gritty and coarse. Wiggling his feet further into it brings more revelations; it’s cool just an inch deep. He lingers a moment just sliding his feet back and forth, enjoying the orchestra of sensations moving around his toes and the cautious smile playing at his mouth.
The sigh beckons him again and he looks up at the brilliant water before him. In five steps he’s at the edge of the surf and the next wave brings a shallow layer of water running up over the tops of his feet. He inhales sharply at the new sensations but the breath leaves him slowly, deliberately, as his tension uncurls another inch. The water is cool but not cold, and so clear he can see individual grains of sand swirling in the eddies around his ankles. The next wave whispers quietly over the beach and he realizes the water is burrowing his feet in the wet sand, asking him to stay. His toes are already submerged.
The water is shallow and he wades out a few more steps. It burbles companionably at his progress. The uncomfortable humidity trapped under his armor wanes with each inch that the water climbs his exposed calves. He feels clean. With the susurration of the waves all around him now, the sounds of their camp back on the shore have muted rapidly. He can hear his own breath mingled with the sigh of the tide far easier than any voices or activity behind him. They’re a world away, too.
Rex closes his eyes and lets his mind float. The air is salty, the sun a happy beacon, and he’s more at home in water than Kamino ever warned him he should be.
Tomorrow they’ll pack up their camp and head to the next rendezvous. But maybe someday, when it’s all over, he could come back here.
Maybe…maybe there is such a thing as water without rage.

My #1 post of 2022
The ISB is objectively evil but damn if they don’t do a good job of sprinkling in moments where you feel Dedra’s own struggle against oppression. Misunderstand me correctly, I do not condone anything she lives for or acts on, and her own privileges are aplenty.
But her genuine unease and fear when Syril stalks and accosts her? Real.
Her mentorship from a high-ranking male boss who sees her value in the workplace and lifts her up with his power? Real.
The subtle twist in her expression when she realizes her aide may be trying to usurp her? REAL.
She is a villain. She uses her own privilege to oppress many many others. But damn if you thought this show about oppression would let you out without an overt example that privilege is never all or nothing.
