I liked the straight kicks and kicks to the head from Loman to try to force Lineker to defend or stay at the very end of range. Lineker forced to swing wide. But he’s not offering much to close range himself and he’s not shooting as Lineker comes in, so he’s just kind of there. He’s doing well of avoiding the big shots and the jab is there when he throws it. Feels inevitable that Lineker lands unless Loman gets him down though.

Stephen Loman says a Potential Fabricio Andrade Match would be Tough
#StephenLoman speaks about potential #FabricioAndrade #figth #ONEChampionship #MMA #WeAreONE

Great Monday Philm for October this week — Red Dragon (2002), essentially the only true “horror” film PSH ever did.
Since the last time I watched Red Dragon, I’ve read the book (at least, the parts that concern Freddy Lounds) and today I also watched Manhunter (1986), the first film adaptation of this Hannibal Lecter story. Maybe it’s because I’m already familiar with this version, but I didn’t connect with Manhunter at all. Almost all of the characters were unmemorable (though I liked Dennis Farina’s Jack Crawford), the score was too much for me, it was soooo slow.
Red Dragon isn’t even that good but I enjoy it so much more. I think Ralph Fiennes’ Dolarhyde is miles better than Tom Noonan’s portrayal — the scene between him and Freddy alone blows Manhunter out of the water. So much scarier and more complex, diving into Dolarhyde’s background and psyche and showing Freddy’s complete terror. I love all the expressions of horror on his face. Just this morning I read a new piece on Phil’s performance in Boogie Nights that emphasized his unmatched talent at communicating emotions simply through his reactions to other characters and events: “Hoffman... convey[s] what everyone around him is thinking but lacks the presence and agency to deliver it as well as he does.” It’s hardly subtle in the “You owe me awe!” scene, but it’s so intense and terrifying and you can almost see Freddy’s head spinning as he desperately tries to get himself out of this situation.
I love Stephen Lang but his Freddy Lounds in Manhunter was not it. I just watched the 1985 film adaptation of Death of a Salesman in which he plays Happy Loman and it felt like the same character — too bouncy and comical in a way that didn’t mesh with Manhunter’s slow, dark tone. In the book, Freddy (or Roscoe, as his gf calls him 💕) is, of course, more fleshed out than he is in either film. He’s still an asshole, obnoxious and slimy and arrogant — but he’s also talented, with something to prove, kind of sweet and sympathetic and sad. Even in this small role, I think PSH’s portrayal digs into that more dimensional characterization in a way that comes through on screen.
Also that 180-degree rotating shot of Freddy at the end is the most handsome anyone has ever been ever.

Ok, the babe @just-a-got-otaku tagged me a week ago to list 10 books that have stuck with me over the years. I've been told that they don't have to be good or profound just something that stuck with you. Now Im not an avid reader but here are some books that I randomly think about/re-read at 4 am. I do have to warn yall but there are trashy/horny historical romance novels on here. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED don't judge me too harshly or the 40+yrold who write these books (LET THEM COOK) also thanks for the tag ♥
A Dangerous Kind of Lady - Mia Vincy
A Wicked Kind of Husband - Mia Vincy
The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy (this book is something else its extremely violent but it's such an excellent story)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days - Jeff Kenny (first/only book I got at the scholastic book fair)
An Offer From a Gentleman: Bridgerton - Julia Quinn (im sorry yall I read all 8+ books in the series. We can talk about Shonda Rhimes and her crimes but let me have my books )

A Child Called "It" - Dave Pelzer
The Outsider - Stephen King
Rescued by a Highlander - Keira Montclair ( ok this book series spans like 3 generations the first generation is like 9 books. This lady loves her OCs and I can respect that and the dedication.)
BONUS

Death of a Salesman- Arthur Miller ( Wille Loman is basically my father this is probably the most depressing short story for me. Hits home a little too much.)

A cult favorite, Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive may be remembered more for the iconic “Green Goblin” killer truck and the awesome AC/DC soundtrack than the film itself. Admit it. The film is a mess but in a so-bad-it’s-good sort of way. Goofy hijinks and silly shenanigans abound as Emilio Estevez struggles to save a small group of survivors trapped in the Dixie Boy truck stop. While the film is complete bunk, it remains a fun ride to revisit occasionally. Or, not.
At the time of this writing, Maximum Overdrive is available for streaming from Tubi and PlutoTV, and as PPV from multiple sources. It is also available on physical media in standard Blu-ray format from Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be Nomads (1986), an oft-mentioned, oft-requested movie featuring Lesley-Anne Down, Pierce Brosnan, Mary Woronov, Adam Ant, and a wild, twisting story. This should be a good discussion!

John Lineker vs. Troy Worthen
John Lineker (36-10) recovered from the back to back beatings that Fabricio Andrade gave him with a bounce back win over Jae Woong Kim. That was like 5-6 weeks ago. And he's decided he wants to fight again. Not sure about that but if he's not too banged up, sure I guess.
Lineker will face off rising Filipino fighter Stephen Loman (17-2) at ONE Fight Night 14 this Friday (Sept 29) on Amazon Prime.

A few of the PSH-related sites I visited in New York City this weekend! This trip was my first visit back to NYC since Phil came into my life and I saw the city with new eyes.
The Public Theater is where Phil spent a huge part of his artistic life, from his off-Broadway debut in The Skriker in 1996 to Jack Goes Boating in 2007. He also directed Stephen Adly Guirgis’ plays The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and The Little Flower of East Orange at the Public in 2005 and 2007, respectively, along with serving as artistic director for over half a dozen other LAByrinth productions staged here.
The Schoenfeld Theatre is where Phil played Jamie Tyrone in O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night in 2003, back when it was known as the Plymouth Theater. Long Day’s Journey was his second Broadway role and he earned a Tony nomination for his performance.
In 2012, Phil starred as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, a revival directed by Mike Nichols. DOAS was his last stage appearance and he earned a Tony nom for best actor.
It was super neat exploring Central Park and seeing the Delacorte Theater, where Phil did Chekhov’s The Seagull (with a cast of other stars too numerous to list!) in 2003. It was hard to get a good photo of the outdoor amphitheater though. And also in the park is the lake where they filmed (obviously) the boating scenes in Jack Goes Boating! 💚
Mostly theaters on this list (of course!) but I noticed Phil all around — the lingering cigarette smoke around stage doors, eating the messiest, greasiest cheeseburgers (his favorite!), the cyclist wearing a bike chain like a bandolier the way he did, all the moments I reminded myself to be fully present and committed and unselfconscious the way he was with his joy and love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also visited Bethune today, the street where Phil died over eight years ago. Part of me really had to see this place, which I’ve spent countless hours thinking about, though my stomach hurt as soon as walked into the village. It’s a beautiful, quiet street and I was alone for a few minutes which gave me some time to do a little thinking and a lot of feeling. It was very overwhelming and I want to keep most of those complicated emotions private, but this quote from Qiu Miaojin says it well:
“I realized the extent of our sorrow. I knew I loved you so much it was like I was practically crying out: Here is the location of the soul I have cared for, and here is the source of all beauty and love, but how heavy, how painful, how heavy, how painful.”
Then I walked across the street to the park along the Hudson River and laid down in the grass for a while. I don’t know that I will ever have all the right words to thank Phil for his impact on me and the world, and I’m still processing things about today and eight years ago and everything in between, but I’m glad I got to say a few of those words to him today, in this place, his beloved city, his last home.
