Meeting Minutes for 10/18/2011
Thanks to everyone for coming out tonight. I love the creativity that is flowing, the enthusiasm we share for the movement, and the initiatives people are taking. Got a good idea? Put it into action! UM Forum for #OccupyMiami Tuesday October 18, 2011, 8pm University of Miami Meeting Minutes “If you’re not upset, you’re not paying attention.” – Protest propaganda “Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.” – Samuel Ullman NEXT MEETING THURSDAY AT 2pm on the COSFORD GREEN The first half of the meeting will be devoted to working groups (committees), then we will reconvene, hear report-backs, and give updates 1. Report-backs from students that attended the Saturday rally and occupied Gov’t Center over the weekend. 2. Josh from OccupyMia (logistics, focus groups liaison): list of existing working groups within occupymia; see forums tab on occupymia.org for info on each group, not all info is written into forums, much is done via chat, face-to-face and other media I. Media group Blogging, cameras, compiling and archiving articles and press, social media II. Spanish media group (8 people) Translations and spanish media outlets (Univision, Nuevo Herald) III. GASG (General Assembly Structure Group) Facilitator training, structure of meetings IV. Need for report backs from working groups that have met prior to the GA Arts and Culture Shows, theater, puppets, art installations V. Workshops and teach-in’s 3. General points of discussion and suggestions- related to CAMPUS • Tomorrow, Wednesday 4-6pm, meet at Mahoney with signage and head to US-1 to rep the movement. Point person (PP)- David Moyer • Same strategy but set up on campus (ex. path from library to UC) to let students know that about our group and the occupation. PP- ? • David (web “alias”: davidmoyer) has been posting articles and websites to the UM forum on occupymia.org • Desire to talk directly with Pres Shalala about our group and this movement. PP- David Moyer • Creation of a you-tube video for our student platform: “Voices of UM”- why students should care, youth/student-specific grievances. PP- Lana and Val • Tumblr- photos of student-oriented “I am the 99%” stories. WRITE YOUR'S AND BRING IT TO THE THURSDAY MEETING. SOMEONE BRING A CAMERA, please. • Advertise “OccuParty” on Thursday night- "are you willing to give up one night in the Grove? If so, come occuparty at gov’t center and bring your friends! Just remember: no drugs and alcohol (OccuPolicy)" • FLASH ANNOUNCEMENTS: we station ourselves around campus and through text communication, simultaneously shout out a message, creating a campus-wide human PA system OR all coming to the center of campus (rock or library green) and making a vocal announcement or demonstration in falsh-mob style • Halloween UM Zombie Walk- greedy, money-hungry zombies invade campus 4. General points of discussion and suggestions– related to OCCUPATION @ GOVT CENTER • Need for pallets to raise tents off the ground (flooding) • Suggestion to number/organize tents, create a type of directory to help people locate each other, food, medical supplies, library, etc. • Mass texting about meetings and going’s-on at the occupation (see forums, “start-up” lady). WHAT ABOUT A BLOG??? • Constant UM presence at Gov’t center o Rotational shifts of students, who can be there on what days and what times? o HOMEBASE TENT o Signage with a “U” so that people recognize and approach us o Create and share a signup sheet. PP- Valerie • STUDENT PLATFORM- once this is solidified in our group, we can bring this to the occupation, recruiting other young people and students at camp that share similar discontents; we can hold meetings and coordinate outreach strategies to reach more students, bring them to occupy, or help them start their own campus/community groups. There are an endless number of platforms that one could stand for in this movement but few have materialized (in the form of a focus group or even an educational platform) in Miami movement. We can show a model of how to make a concerted, coordinated platform that focuses on specific issues and is in complete solidarity with the larger movement. MISC. Outreach to high school students Creation of a FACEBOOK GROUP – please join Contact Kemmy Joseph about legality of camping on campus
