Any discussion on cinema, especially Indian cinema, will remain incomplete unless you mention a maverick of a filmmaker, the legendary director Satyajit Ray- one of the very few Indian filmmakers to win an Academy Award (Oscar). Ray's works always came with a new lesson for aspiring filmmakers. He made 36 movies in a career spanning 37 years. Every film is distinguishable in its way, and that it is almost impossible to pick one over the other. On his 100th birth anniversary, as the Oscar-winning filmmaker, writer, and illustrator stands tall as an eternal Bengali icon. Us at hoichoi pay tribute to the Renaissance man of Bengali cinema and his creations through Shotoborshe Satyajit, a unique collection of films directed by him and his writings later adapted into movies. Here are the 11 iconic films featured in this series.

 Pather Panchali

One of the greatest classics of Indian cinema, released in 1955, this Satyajit Ray film was produced by the Government of West Bengal. Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandhopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name. With this movie, Satyajit Ray made his directorial debut. The film features Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, and Chunibala Devi. The story of a young boy, Apu, and his sister, Durga, and their life in a small village of Bengal. Pather Panchali is a turning point in Indian cinema, with its poetic scenes managing to capture literature into filmmaking. The film won eleven international prizes, including the coveted Academy Award, and was among the films that pioneered the parallel cinema movement.

 Hirak Rajar Deshe

A film that echoes the legacy of Satyajit Ray and his nature of challenging conventional customs. A children's movie filled with magic and music that also served as a robust satire to the oppression of state and ruling powers. Ray depicted societal issues in a subtle way, covered by humour without destroying its seriousness or sanctity. Featuring legendary actors like Soumitra Chatterjee, Utpal Dutt, Rabi Ghosh, this film is loved throughout the ages and remains an evergreen classic.

 Aparajito

The second part of The Apu Trilogy, directed by Satyajit Ray. The film starts with Apu moving to Varanasi with his family and chronicles Apu's life from childhood to adolescence in college, right up to his mother's death, when he is left all alone. The film features Pinaki Sen, Smaran Ghosal, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Ramani Ranjan, Charu Prkash, Subodh Ganguly. The film won the Bodil Award for Best non-European Film of the Year in Denmark in 1967, along with other accolades.

 Abhijan

One of Satyajit Ray's cult classics. Adapted from the novel Abhijan by Tarashankar Bandhopadhyay. This film features the evils in society and the abstract helplessness of its inhabitants. Starring Gyanesh Mukherjee, Rabi Ghosh, and Soumitra Chatterjee, Abhijan is a story of a taxi driver's attempt of reinventing his life and his eventual surrender to the evils in society. The protagonist Narasingh (played by Soumitra Chatterjee) was a direct influence on the character of the cynical cab driver, Travis Bickle (played by Robert De Niro) in Martin Scorsese's film Taxi Diver. Scorsese himself has credited Satyajit Ray as an influence on his work.

Une anisotropie dans l’accélération de l'expansion cosmique ?

C’est une petite bombe sulfureuse que l’astrophysicien français Jacques Colin et ses collaborateurs danois et britanniques viennent de publier : selon eux, l’énergie noire n’existerait tout simplement pas et les observations des décalages de vitesse des supernovas vis-à-vis de leur distance ayant conduit à cette idée en 1998 ne seraient qu’un artefact lié au mouvement des observateurs que nous sommes. Leur étude fondée sur 740 supernovas est parue dans Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Les quatre astrophysiciens ont étudié et mesuré l’anisotropie de l’accélération de l’expansion qui peut être dérivée de l’observation des supernovas Ia. Parmi eux se trouve le britannique d'origine indienne Subir Sarkar (Université d'Oxford) qui avait déjà montré en 2016 que la signifiance statistique des données de supernovas pour la détermination de l'accélération de l'expansion était bien plus faible que ce que l'on pouvait penser (voir ici). Ils montrent aujourd'hui qu'une accélération est bien présente mais qu’elle s’apparente à un effet local, possédant une direction privilégiée, le long de la direction dans laquelle nous semblons nous mouvoir par rapport au fond diffus cosmologique (CMB) qui baigne l’Univers dans toutes les directions. Dit autrement, Colin et ses collaborateurs trouvent une anisotropie dipolaire dans l’accélération de l’expansion, avec une distribution dipolaire similaire à celle du fond diffus cosmologique. Ils en concluent que l’origine de cette accélération résiduelle est inconnue mais qu’elle ne peut absolument pas être associée à une énergie noire qui ne peut pas montrer d’anisotropie, par définition.

Les chercheurs ont exploité le catalogue de supernovas JLA (Joint Light-curve Analysis) et une analyse statistique de maximum de vraisemblance sur les données. Ils ont travaillé sur les redshifts et les magnitudes apparentes telles qu’elles ont été mesurées dans le système héliocentrique, mais en enlevant les corrections qui ont été apportées dans le catalogue JLA pour tenir compte des vitesses particulières locales. Ces corrections avaient été effectuées pour déterminer la valeur des paramètres des supernovas dans le référentiel du CMB qui est censé être isotrope. Mais une étude précédente par la même équipe avait déjà montré que ces corrections pouvaient être suspectes car des vitesses particulières ne chutaient pas lorsque la distance augmentait, ce qui empêche une convergence avec le référentiel du CMB même à une distance de 1 milliard d’années-lumière.

Colin et ses collaborateurs trouvent alors que le paramètre de décélération est globalement négatif, indiquant bien une accélération, mais qu’il possède en fait seulement une petite composante monopolaire (isotrope) et une beaucoup plus forte composante dipolaire (50 fois plus élevée), qui se trouve alignée sur le dipôle du CMB. C’est-à-dire que l’accélération est observée dans une direction privilégiée : celle de notre mouvement dans l’Univers local (par rapport au CMB).

Et surtout, l’amplitude décroit exponentiellement en fonction de la distance (du redshift) : 

q0 = qm + qd.n̂ exp(-z/S)

La distance caractéristique à partir de laquelle le dipôle disparaît vaut environ 100 Mpc. Une accélération isotrope, correspondant à qd=0, est rejetée avec une signifiance statistique de 3,9 sigmas, ce qui est élevé, alors que la valeur monopolaire, elle vaut  qm=-0.157, une valeur basse, qui est, selon les auteurs, compatible avec une valeur nulle (c’est-à-dire une absence totale d’accélération !) avec une signifiance de 1,4 sigmas (une faible signifiance statistique tout de même).

Pour comparaison, le paramètre de décélération du modèle cosmologique standard est monopolaire est vaut qm=-0.55, et donc qd=0 (étoile bleue dans la figure ci-dessus).

En 1998, quand les équipes de Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt et Adam Riess ont mis en évidence une accélération de l’expansion, ils avaient travaillé sur un échantillon de « seulement » 60 supernovas de type Ia. Depuis, les catalogues de supernovas ont fortement grossi et en été rendus accessibles à toute la communauté scientifique en 2014, avec notamment des supernovas réparties partout dans le ciel, dans toutes les directions, et des statistiques plus avancées peuvent être obtenues.

Les quatre astrophysiciens et théoriciens indiquent de plus que la prise en compte d’une évolution des paramètres utilisés pour ajuster les courbes de lumière des supernovas en fonction du redshift ne modifie en rien leur conclusion, un point qui avait précédemment alimenté la critique de leur méthode.

Cette analyse décoiffante paraît cohérente avec une proposition théorique qu'avait faite le chercheur grec Christos Tsagas, qui a montré il y a quelques années qu’une accélération pouvait être déduite à partir des supernovas que nous observons si nous sommes emportés dans un « flot cosmique » à très grande échelle, partagé par les galaxies qui nous sont proches. La cause d’un tel flot est complètement inconnue mais pour Colin et ses collaborateurs, il ne fait quasi pas de doute que l’accélération de l’expansion que nous mesurons est un simple artefact lié à ce flot de galaxies, et qu’une énergie noire ne peut pas en être la cause.

Heureusement, d'énormes progrès observationnels vont bientôt être à notre portée : le LSST (Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) va mesurer dans quelques années un nombre démesuré de supernovas et pourra confirmer ou infirmer l’existence d’un dipôle dans le paramètre de décélération. Le satellite Euclid permettra aussi d’affiner grandement les paramètres liés à l’accélération de l’expansion, qui n’est peut-être finalement qu’une illusion…
