T-Mobile Short Shines Spotlight on Cecile’s Bath & Body Brand
Cecile’s Bath & Body (New York City, NY) - On 1/21/21, T-Mobile For Business released a short film featuring Black-owned skincare brand Cecile’s Bath & Body. As a part of their Magenta Edge initiative, they’re using original content to help small businesses thrive. Expanding on T-Mobile’s diversity and inclusion pledge they’re also shining the spotlight on Black-owned businesses such as Cecile’s Bath & Body. Founded by Jackie Granchamps in 2014, Cecile’s focuses on empowering women to live a cleaner, more authentic life through handcrafted organic products. In this short, Jackie shares her journey and business insights on customer relationships and the power of CRM technology.
Cecile’s Bath & Body was originally birthed by Jackie making body scrubs using fresh herbs for family and friends as holiday gifts. At the time, she was working in corporate marketing and began to suffer from unresolved headaches and eczema. This led her to shy away from conventional products as she built on her cultural plant knowledge and focus on traditional Haitian herbal remedies. On the philosophy behind Cecile’s Bath & Body, Jackie had this to say, “We're living in a society where we are eating things and putting substances on our bodies that we can't pronounce, and I want to change that.” In 2016, Cecile’s introduced the first on-demand, fully customizable blend bar, delivering bath salts, crèmes, and scrubs; aptly named ‘Mélanger.’
As a result of the pandemic, Jackie was laid off from her corporate marketing role. However, she seized the opportunity to focus on Cecile’s. In July of 2020, she was awarded a scholarship to Selfmade, an entrepreneurial program from media company Brit + Co, where she was able to refine operations and marketing processes. As a solopreneur, Jackie is proud to have picked herself up and is grateful for the amazing opportunity with T-Mobile. According to the research firm Forrester, U.S. companies will spend more than $100 billion this year on marketing technology—and this number will keep growing. The spending ranges from relatively simple methods such as email automation to complex systems such as customer relationship management (CRM) and marketing automation. While Forrester doesn’t break down its marketing technology spending data by industry, the business imperative for publishers is obvious: book buyers are online, even when the final purchases are not.
The question for book publishers, though, is not whether to spend but how to spend, and especially how to balance the ongoing need to market individual titles vs. building a comprehensive back end of data and technology. On top of this are the perennial questions of how to make new technology work successfully for customers.
Book publishers have been spending more to reach consumers online, especially through email campaigns, digital advertising, and social media. The appeal is obvious: unlike many kinds of technology, where the investment can be hard to measure and prohibitively expensive, these techniques are the opposite: a publisher can spend $50 on Facebook ads and track the engagement; it can use a MailChimp account and measure the response.
For one veteran marketing executive, these efforts are about building interaction, creating a higher response rate, and should “lead to actual sales,” he says, adding, “I don’t think we’re doing that enough in publishing.” He stresses that publishers need to take care in B2C marketing to not take sales away from bookstores. Still, making direct connections to consumers should drive more sales overall, helping the bookstores as well.
Sanj Kharbanda, sales and marketing director at Beacon Press, says, “Marketing has to be long-term and strategic and include investments in things like email acquisition, CRM, and social platforms, but it also needs to be at the title level—digital advertising, social advertising, retailer advertising, and more.” This puts marketers in the difficult position of managing resources that are sometimes scarce.
Michael Cairns, CEO at strategy firm Information Media Partners, points to another aspect. “The thing I see the most is a lack of consistency in approach: marketing may be using one tool such as MailChimp; sales may be using another, like Sugar; and even editorial may be using its own tools to reach out directly to consumers for newsletters and other supplementary content. So I think I would invest in trying to implement uniform tools and solutions with perhaps something like Hubspot as a core application.”
The technology is only part of it, of course. Successful technology implementation comes from dealing well with people, processes, and technology—in that order. When it comes to marketing technology, the people element includes developing an in-depth understanding of one’s audiences.
Lanell White joined the University of Michigan Press last year as director of sales and marketing and has brought this audience analysis lens with her as she’s supported the launch of the press’s flagship Ebook Collection. “Since I’ve started, I’ve been focused on defining our audiences, personas, market problems, and messaging, and aligning tools such as HubSpot, Mailchimp, and Asana to do the heavy lifting,” she explains.
White only has to look at the marketing material she receives to see how much the landscape of this technology is evolving. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t get email marketing from a brand that has been personalized based on my preferences, behaviors, and previous conversions,” she says. “I’m now a participant in shaping their product road map by virtue of interacting with marketing automation.”
As White points out, persona is the key concept here. Visitors to a publisher’s website can be purchasing a book for themselves, as a gift, for work, or for fun. They can be authors visiting their book’s landing page or looking for a royalty statement, reviewers trying to get a copy of a new book, or overseas publishers looking to see if they can secure rights to a title. Each of these scenarios could mean a different flow on the website, a different set of data points for CRM, and possibly a different follow-up email. If a press publishes textbooks and academic books, the personas and the choices that arise out of them become more complex—a visitor could be the professor looking for an exam copy, the faculty assistant ordering for a department, the student shopping for the latest edition at the best price.
Publishers too often measure their technology against Amazon and decide that they are coming up short. Indeed, Amazon solves some problems extremely well, but it also doesn’t face these myriad personas. Publishers do. Some manage them very well, while the rest need to look at the marketing technology that will help them reach their audiences—and sell books.

The AI will interview you now
Face recognition technology and AI is being used in job interviews in the UK “to identify the best candidates”, says the Telegraph. Unilever and other use HireVue’s AI to
“analyse the language, tone and facial expressions of candidates when they are asked a set of identical job questions which they film on their mobile phone or laptop. The algorithms select the best applicants by assessing their performances in the videos against about 25,000 pieces of facial and linguistic information compiled from previous interviews of those who have gone on to prove to be good at the job.”
It’s not doing face recognition, it’s doing behaviour recognition. Something like: “These facial and speech behaviours are correlated with the interviewee being a good employee - thumbs up, +4 career points”.
It’s natural that this feels a bit wrong because humans are unique and special, right? In truth though, they are bound by fairly predictable behaviours, and really it’s not that hard to have a computer watch the face of a human and make judgements. It’s science you can trust, and in fact it weeds out bias because the machine doesn’t care, unlike a human interviewer who’ll bring loads of messy biases. So it’s a good thing, it’s progress.
Oh sorry wait, it’s a science you can trust as long as the data the machine learning model was trained on was large and unbiased. And as long as none of the interviewees look different to the ones in the training data. And as long as the machine learning doesn’t inadvertently amplify any systemic biases in the hiring organisation’s practices (or Hirevue itself’s). And as long as interviewees can meaningfully give consent to be catalogued by a machine. And as long as no discrimination law is being broken by having the computer say no. And as long as some job applicants aren’t freaked out by being video-interviewed by a Voight-Kampff machine.
Here the newsletterbot is guilty of bias: it believes humans to be sufficiently complex that it will be hard to effectively “machine learn” the problem that is organisations, their people, their culture, their politics, the webs of motivations and incentives, their jobs and the humans that might potentially fit well.
Still, HireVue says they’re serious about ethical and accurate machine learning, so fingers crossed 😬. An interesting read on video interviews. YouTube is full of videos about how to do well in a HireVue video interview, here’s one. Watching them, you’re struck by the asymmetry: the machine and later an employer watching your interview video, but you seeing nothing except the questions and the webcam’s black eye. So interviewing would be perhaps be a bit fairer if the employer also had 30 seconds to consider and 3 minutes to answer on camera the interviewee’s questions.
Unrelated, but relevant because it’s about bias and how it and power are inadvertently expressed in technology: “Google contractors allegedly offered darker-skinned homeless people $5 dollar gift cards to scan their faces for facial recognition software”.
Uber work
Uber’s temp agency platform, Uber Work has launched in Chicago. The company says: “We believe that finding work shouldn’t have to be a job in itself. For positions as diverse as being a prep cook, warehouse worker, a commercial cleaner or event staff, Uber Works aims to make it easier to find and claim a shift.”
Here’s a fictional look at temp workers in 2023, and hopefully Uber Works doesn’t nudge work in that direction. Something that empowers shift workers is a better model: “crowdsourcing information about what it’s really like to work somewhere, turning it into recommendations about employers that could be better for you” (from plucky UK startup Poplar).
Elsewhere, a successful taxi co-op: “A worker owned taxi coop in Southend has grown from 6 to 70 drivers. They repaid all their investors and returned £3000 to their members last year. The same year Uber left the area after failing to compete with them.”
Amazon rumours
Amazon to sell its Go technology to airports, cinemas, sports venues? Interesting if true - eventually there would be a tension between the platform and the grocery businesses (see also: Ocado in 2017ish).
Amazon is said to be hiring property experts in UK.
Similar rumour: but in Los Angeles. A dozen leases have been signed in Los Angeles, reports the Wall St journal. 7 burning questions about Amazon's new grocery chain.
Facebook leak: trust deficit internally?
A Facebooker leaked audio of an all-team Zuckermeet. The media reported it as FB boss Zuckerberg saying he’d fight (too) hard against politicians etc, but the transcript suggests that his comments were actually fairly standard stuff. This story is more notable for the fact that an employee recorded and leaked the meeting - growing cultural/trust deficit internally, perhaps?
Cryptocurrency news
Paypal has pulled out of the Facebook-led Libra cryptocurrency consortium, saying that it’s not you Libra it’s me. Rumours: Mastercard and Visa aren’t so sure either.
Police auctioned off £240,000 of cryptocurrency confiscated from a hacker - if it had been a confiscated 3 Series with a spoiler kit and spinner rims you’d have expected to be able to snag a good deal, but money’s money so maybe there wasn’t a discount in this case.
“The pain in my jaw from holding just one cryptocurrency had reduced me to an all-liquid diet. I was not cut out to be a trader.” - a good piece on the subsistence lives of small-scale cryptocurrency traders (also a decent backgrounder on cryptocurrencies).

#PHnews: Bioethanol plant in north Negros shut down due to pollution
BACOLOD CITY – The San Carlos Bioenergy Inc. (SCBI) based in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental has suspended its operation upon the order of Mayor Renato Gustilo amid the recurring pollution issues faced by the bioethanol producer.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Monday, Gustilo said the plant ceased operation on Friday afternoon after he sent a letter to its management dated Feb. 18 informing the company on reports of its environmental violations.
He said the series of incidents of water discoloration along the coastal waters of Sitio Maloloy-on in Barangay Punao are caused by wastewater discharges of the plant.
Gustilo also cited as evidence the footages and reports from the City Planning and Development Coordinator’s Office, Bantay Katunggan of the Coastal Resource Management of the City Environment Management Office (CRM-CEMO), Eco-Zone Multi-Partite Monitoring Team, and City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
Although specific mitigating measures were undertaken by the SCBI, such initiatives were not enough to cushion the negative impact of the water pollution to the people of San Carlos, he added.
Gustilo thus strongly advised the SCBI management to temporarily cease operation until they are able to settle the recurring pollution issues.
Otherwise, the city government will recommend to the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources the issuance of a cease-and-desist order for the plant, Gustilo said.
Arthur Batomalaque, the city’s senior environment management specialist, said they have referred the recurring incidents of water discoloration, foul smell, and other environment issues committed by the SCBI to the Pollution Adjudication Board for a possible case as the firm was already penalized for such violations.
Although local groundwater wells remain unsullied, coastal waters have been greatly affected by the effluent from the plant, he added.
Melvin Maglayon of the CEMO’s Coastal Resource Management said any industrial waste that reaches the sea is harmful because pollutants can lower dissolved oxygen levels causing fishkill.
