A definitive timeline of the friendship between LeBron James and Ben Simmons
It’s more like big brother and little brother.
Ben Simmons and LeBron James have eerily similar games on the court, but their relationship goes far deeper than anything on the court. They’ve built a real friendship over the last couple years.
When did it start? It’s hard to pinpoint an exact moment. But it all seemed to have started back in 2015 before Simmons even hit LSU’s campus in Baton Rogue.
June 2015: Simmons goes against James in a Nike basketball camp
Before Simmons started his collegiate career at LSU in the fall of 2015, he was a camp counselor in the first Nike Basketball Academy where the top prospects from around the country come to learn from the game’s best minds. Nike’s best NBA players show up to teach and get some run in, too.
Simmons showed up and went up against the best of the best NBA players and held his own. James Harden, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, and of course, LeBron James all participated in the camp. This is the first time the two got to know each other on the basketball court.
I’d love to have been a fly on the wall.
Dec. 2015: Simmons calls James a mentor and a big brother
Like many players, Simmons clearly looks up to James. But their relationship goes a step beyond what other players may have with James. Simmons called James his mentor and said he looked as him as a “big brother.”
"He gives me a lot of advice if I ever need it," Simmons said. "He looks out for me, and he's one of those people you have to have as a mentor because he's one of the best players in the world."
And you know it’s real when James doesn’t mind the comparisons.
“Someone's going to be compared to someone all the time, and I don't mind him being compared to me. People not only recognizing what he does on the floor, but he's a great kid, too. He has a great family, great support system, and that's why he's able to do what he [does] on the floor,” James said.
March. 2016: Ben Simmons signs with Klutch Sports
With LSU ineligible to enter the NCAA tournament, Simmons’ collegiate career came to an end. And that was made official when Simmons’ signed with James’ business partner Rich Paul and Klutch Sports.
.@BenSimmons25 announces on UNINTERRUPTED that he has signed with Klutch Sports Group.https://t.co/aKPsC22vAF
— UNINTERRUPTED (@uninterrupted) March 23, 2016
“It’s another family for me. Now it’s all about putting in that hard work and getting ready for the next level,” Simmons said when he announced his signing.
James is Klutch’s most prominent client and Simmons’ agent is one of James’ best friends. Simmons called James his big brother and says he just gained another “family” with his new agency. Coincidence? I think not.
June 2016: James gives Simmons his first piece of advice for the NBA
Simmons and James are two of the select few who have been number one overall picks, so James certainly had some good advice in pocket for his little brother.
What was it? Don’t pay attention to everything written about you.
“I’ve learned a lot just being around LeBron,” Simmons told the New York Times. “People say things about him all the time, but he would never say anything back. That’s what I learned from him: Don’t retaliate to articles or pieces or to things that are said about me.”
That’s nothing new or profound from James, but a good piece of advice for his little brother nonetheless.
Aug. 2016: James and Simmons work out together before the season
How often do we see rookies get to sit in on a LeBron James workout? You can’t tell me Simmons and James ain’t tight. Dwyane Wade was there too.
Good day of work!
A post shared by dwyanewade (@dwyanewade) on Aug 31, 2016 at 11:38am PDT
Oct. 2016: James preaches patience to Simmons
Simmons fractured his foot during a preseason practice with the 76ers before he could even play his first real game and had surgery on it a week later. Simmons sat out the entire season, which was the right decision and also one James supported.
"He's a young guy. He's got to make sure he's patient and not get frustrated with the process because obviously I know I would want to get on the floor. But he has a long career in front of him and he just has to be patient, let the foot heal and when he gets back on the floor then he'll show why he's the No. 1 pick," James said.
Now that’s a big brother quote.
July 2017: James and Simmons trade tweets
When the Cavaliers were going through their struggles this summer with their front office, everyone was talking about how James would be better off elsewhere. Did Simmons catch wind of that? Maybe. In the midst of it all, he dropped this tweetbomb.
@KingJames
— Ben Simmons (@BenSimmons25) July 18, 2017
PHEW! James on the 76ers with Embiid and Simmons? Just give them the trophy now. But not so fast. Big brother had a wisecrack for Simmons a couple days later on his birthday.
Happy Bday to my lil bro @BenSimmons25!!! That boi 21 now. Uh-Oh!! Let's go have a Shirley temple with a twist. ‍♂️ ‍♂️
— LeBron James (@KingJames) July 20, 2017
This has crossed the line into adorable. Please get these guys on the same team.
July 2017: James and Simmons link up in Vegas
Maybe they actually had that drink James joked about? The two met again in Las Vegas when the 76ers were about to play the Cavs in the NBA Summer League.
.@BenSimmons25, @KingJames and @DejounteMurray watchin' tonight's match-up! #SummerSixers http://pic.twitter.com/ylJPf8dTCe
— Philadelphia 76ers (@sixers) July 13, 2017
They even got a workout in.
Get those LeBron to Philly rumors ready... http://pic.twitter.com/mMZboxCG3D
— Sports Illustrated (@SInow) July 12, 2017
It’s rare to see James broadcasting his relationship with players around the league aside from the Banana Boat crew. But Simmons seems to be one of those players James is actually close with and the feeling seems to be mutual.
It’s great to see these two developing a bond given their similar playing styles. Will we see them playing together at some point? Who knows. Let’s just appreciate their matchup against each other tonight.

Your Monday Morning Roundup
He seems to be fine.
Let’s hit it!
But first, a word from our sponsors:
Legal. Please welcome new sponsor Krasno, Krasno and Onwudinjo. When you need a workers’ compensation or social security attorney.
Nickname. Now available. Shop now.
Amazon. PRIME DAY is almost here. Support your favorite website by clicking this link.
  The roundup:
Markelle Fultz should be fine, because I totally trust the Sixers crack medical staff and their decision to let him go out on the court and do this:
FULTZ ALARM! His ankle looks fine! Praise to the man above http://pic.twitter.com/CuhMvFVClM
— Josh Reynolds (@JoshReynolds24) July 9, 2017
Here's Fultz putting up a shot (see previous tweet). http://pic.twitter.com/V0HY1m3iSh
— Jessica Camerato (@JCameratoCSN) July 9, 2017
I mean, they would never let an injured player do anything basketball related if they feared there was any possibility of a setback.
But for real, Fultz looks to be fine.
Cue the doctor who hasn’t examined him analysis:
"It sounds a bit optimistic giving how much he was in pain after [the injury]. But I'd caution a little more than 1-2 weeks." – NovaCare Dr.
 SPORTSRADIO 94WIP (@SportsRadioWIP) July 10, 2017
Thanks, doctor who hasn’t examined him.
Ben Simmons and Jahlil Okafor were at the game. Oh, what, you didn’t see Big Jah even though he was seated next to Simmons during this national TV interview which I can only imagine Team Simmons had to pre-screen questions for?

And there’s Marla Hooch:
It’s fitting that Okafor is sitting under the NBA Live 18 ad– he’s the lesser version nobody wants.
T.J. McConnell gets some serious love from EASTERN CONFERENCE CENTER in this Hoops Hype piece:
“The most underrated player in the NBA is TJ McConnell from the Sixers. If you just look at his stats, they’re never going to jump out at you, but that little f***er is tough. He’s a tough kid. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I’ll just screen this little white boy and lay him out,’ but he fights through every screen. He’s gritty and he doesn’t back down from anyone. It’s hard being a point guard in today’s NBA because you’re going against a star most nights, but he holds his own. He demands respect every single night. If you don’t respect him entering the game, you’ll respect him by the second half.”
If Philly becomes a destination solely due to our culinary strengths, I’d be cool wit dat:
"Somebody dug up a tweet from 2011 when I said Philly was one of my favorite cities… six years later I still feel the same way." http://pic.twitter.com/ErNs0jYnOt

Can James Harden lead a superteam?
Amazon Prime is nearly as popular as cable TV, which means Amazon Instant Video has almost as much penetration as traditional cable. Still think they won’t be bidding on bigtime sports rights?

NBA Summer League scores 2017: 3 big winners and 1 loser from Saturday night hoops
Another turbulent night of Summer League hoops left fans wanting more.
Another night of NBA Summer League basketball made for an emotional roller coaster that gave fans the ups and downs they’ll be in store for when the regular season rolls around in October.
Unfortunately, it was Saturday night. That means you were probably out partying, bar-hopping, in some mischief or just focused on something other than basketball. No problem, that’s what I’m here for.
In case you missed it, Lonzo Ball bounced back from his dreadful NBA debut. The Lakers still lost because Jayson Tatum was virtually unstoppable in the second half, finishing with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Tatum is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in the Summer League.
Markelle Fultz got hurt, but the injury turned out to be less severe than many anticipated. Patrick McCaw shined through for the Warriors, with 25 points on five three-pointers. And rookies Dennis Smith Jr., Lauri Markkanen and Bam Adebayo each showed why their respective teams drafted them with their lottery picks.
Regardless, there were three clear winners on Saturday night and one easily identifiable loser:
Winner: Los Angeles Lakers
After scoring only five points on 2-of-15 shooting in his Summer League debut, Lonzo Ball bounced back with a triple double (11 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists) in game two against the Celtics.
But Ball wasn’t the only Laker who shined on Saturday. Rookie wing Kyle Kuzma out of Utah scored 31 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting. And rookie Josh Hart (Villanova) had 15 points through three quarters before landing awkwardly on his right ankle and asking to exit the game.
The Lakers lost to the Celtics, but their talented youngsters were on full display on Saturday, giving fans hope for the near future.
Winner: Semi Ojeleye
Ojeleye made five of his nine three-pointers on Saturday, including three triples on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter. The Southern Methodist product coached by Larry Brown showed he has range out to the NBA three-point line and finished with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
Winner: Spin-move, step-back jumpers
Kyle Kuzma’s length makes him a solid inside-out defender, but he was no match for this smooth move by Jayson Tatum, who spun-off his opponent before stepping back for the fade-away shot off the left leg.
Jayson Tatum is showing off the full repertoire on ESPN! #NBASummer http://pic.twitter.com/mdxK9i15YH

Oddly enough, Markelle Fultz pulled off a similar move in the 76ers’ late-night matchup against the Warriors.
Some sort of jimbo... definitely a nice one. #SummerSixers http://pic.twitter.com/FQxQsPrGWq
— Philadelphia 76ers (@sixers) July 9, 2017
The talent level in this rookie class is undeniable, and with moves like these, the future of NBA basketball looks bright.
Loser: Philadelphia 76ers
One play sucked the life out of Philly’s Summer League matchup against the Warriors.
Markelle Fultz stepped on the back of Brown's foot then rolled his ankle, 2 looks http://pic.twitter.com/kxG2VfGFX1
— CJ Fogler (@cjzero) July 9, 2017
Fultz was later diagnosed with a sprained left ankle, which was a sigh of relief for a 76ers fanbase that has endured injuries to its rookies in each of the past four draft classes. Poor Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot ate an elbow to the mouth on the same play, but everyone was so obsessed with Fultz’s ankle, they looked past the blood on his face.
Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot also took an elbow on that play, had some blood on his face http://pic.twitter.com/jaenNhbkyZ
