Sunday Roast at The Brook
I'm not an expert, but to me, the concept of a Sunday Roast is as British as afternoon tea or adding 'innit' to the end of all your sentences. There are so many pubs that offer this quintessential British cuisine, but today, I'm reviewing the Sunday Roast offered at The Brook. Located on Mill Road, The Brook is a cozy-sized pub with a warm atmosphere and some delicious ciders available...but how does their Sunday Roast hold up?
British Top Side Roast Beef with Horseradish Sauce (15 pounds)

I had such MIXED FEELINGS about this Sunday Roast. It was a roller coaster of emotions served up with a half-vat of gravy on the side. Some bites had my eyes rolling back in my head with ecstasy. Other bites belonged in the frozen aisle of a discount grocery store. Because of this, I'll rank each item, individually, from worst to best.
6. The Vegetables
I adore roasted veggies. Throw some broccoli, carrots, onions, and cloves of garlic on a roasting pan, drizzle with olive oil, toss some salt and pepper on top, and chuck that baby into the oven and I am more than happy. But these veggies had no tales to tell - they were bland, flavorless, steamed, and unhappy. Just like me after eating the lifeless carrots.
5. Top Side Beef
Seeing as it's called a Sunday ROAST, you'd think the meat would be the star of the show. And while it looks quite nice in the picture, the beef was so dry that I had to resort to dunking it into the gravy in order to make it palatable. It also didn't have much flavor beyond the gravy itself, which leads me to...
4. The Gravy
Solidly fine, and served with a generous portion. However, could do with more of a flavor PUNCH. As it was, I used it mostly as a moist-maker.
3. The Stuffing
And all of a sudden we jump from 'solidly fine' to 'oh my god, I wish I could ask for seconds.' The stuffing is invisible in this picture, and was a surprise to me. In fact, now that I'm writing this, I'm wondering if I got a different roast than the one on the menu...perhaps a holiday offering? Because stuffing isn't mentioned in the description, and I'm just realizing that there was no horseradish sauce in sight, either...hmm, well, all's well that ends well, because I'm glad for the swap. This stuffing was moist and packed with flavor - it tasted of salt, herbs, and garlic, and had a dense, crumbly texture. My only complaint was that there was such a small amount - it hid beneath the potatoes, a noble treasure.
2. The Yorkshire Pudding
My first bite of the Sunday Roast was a chunk of the fluffy, soft Yorkshire Pudding - and I can't be certain I didn't moan. It's been six months since the last time I had a Yorkshire Pudding, and I now realize that that is far too long. Honestly, I know a lot of people rag on British food, but the Yorkshire Pudding deserves to be appreciated internationally. I just wish I could describe it better, for those who've never tried one. It's almost like...the love child of a souffle, a pancake, and pita bread...but also different from all of those things. The texture is NEXT LEVEL. So freaking fluffy. And the perfect vessel for soaking up pan sauces and gravy. Ugh, I would have traded the beef for another Yorkshire Pudding with no hesitation. And honestly, the Yorkshire Pudding was probably THE best thing on the plate...but, they're also pretty hard to get wrong. Put a Yorkie P on my plate, and I'll be happy almost always. Although, I won't take away from The Brook here - they do a particularly good one.
The Roast Potatoes
After tasting the sad veg, I feared the potatoes would also be steamed and unseasoned. Instead, The Brook said 'try the best fucking roasted potatoes you've ever had, ye of little fucking faith.'
Crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, these taters were perfectly cooked. Flavorful on their own, they verged on orgasmic when slathered in gravy. And I don't even usually LIKE roast potatoes!
So, now, hopefully, you see why this Sunday Roast is hard to rate. How do you compare the worst steamed veggies I've ever had - even the ones in elementary school had salt on them - to the fucking best roast potatoes I've ever had?! It's madness. Madness! While the stuffing and the Yorkshire puddings also pull their own weight, I will say, because the meat is supposed to be the focal point of a Sunday Roast, I'm going to have to give this particular roast at The Brook a...
Rating: 6 out of 10 Gravy Boats
Honestly, if I had just been handed a plate of Yorkshire Pudding and Roast Potatoes, the score would have been much higher...although I'd be eating nothing but carbs. Still. Some things in life are worth every bite, while other things - like the dry beef - are barely worth chewing.

Nottingham Cottage…we get it! She had to live there because she was a WoC. They did not want her living in the palace. She was put in her place…blah, blah, blah!
Nottingham Cottage has previously been home to Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and his wife, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.[8] Upon her retirement in 1948, the house was given for life to Marion Crawford, the former governess of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. In gratitude for Crawford's service, Queen Mary, the princesses' grandmother, decorated the house with Victorian furniture and prints of flowers for her. Crawford left the cottage in 1950 in the aftermath of her selling stories about the royal family to newspapers, which was revealed publicly by The Sunday Express editor John Gordon in an attempt to pressure her to provide more stories and articles to him.[4]
The home was subsequently lent to Miles Hunt-Davis, private secretary of the Duke of Edinburgh and his wife Anita.[9] Robert Fellowes, private secretary to Elizabeth II, and his wife Lady Jane Fellowes, the sister of Diana, Princess of Wales, also occupied the cottage.[3]

Palace chef recalls how Prince William 'scared' Beatrice and Eugenie with Easter prank; Former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady claims a young Prince William once frightened his cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie at Easter using sweet treats. (April 2nd 2021)
Families across the UK will be celebrating Easter this Sunday, possibly enjoying a roast dinner, an egg hunt in the garden and plenty of chocolate goodies.
The Royal Family also like to do this, with Kate Middleton revealing last year that Prince William couldn't stop eating chocolate ahead of the occasion.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge usually spend Easter with their family and often see the Queen and cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie at Windsor Castle.
The pandemic will likely have thrown a spanner in their plans somewhat this year like for the rest of us, but at least they'll have some fond memories of the holiday to look back on.
And there's one memory in particular that likely stands out -but for all the wrong reasons.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady explains that one year, when the younger royals were children, he decided to make a Hickory Dickory Dock nursery rhyme-themed chocolate egg for them.
Speaking to OK! magazine, he said: "It had a clock on the top striking one and a sugared mouse peeking out of a mousehole.
"We sent it up to the nursery on the silver tray, but 15 minutes later the Footman brought it back.
"He said, 'Nanny asked me to return this. Prince William has just stood on a chair and bitten the mouse's head off, frightening Beatrice and Eugenie.'"
Oh dear...
Darren went on to say that he jumped to action, quickly making another mouse to replace the one Prince William had destroyed.
He continued to say: "We had to quickly make another mouse, pop it in the hole and send it back to the nursery.
"I think Nanny put the egg out of William's reach to make sure it didn't happen again."
The Royal Family's Easter Sunday activities are quite traditional, including a fish dinner on Good Friday.
On Easter Sunday they usually go to St George's Chapel -Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding venue -for a service before heading back for a four-course lunch.
Darren added: "We'd go straight into the main course -- a traditional roast lamb with seasonal vegetables.
"The Queen likes her meat well done so she'd always have the first two slices.
"They'd also have a compound salad served in a kidney dish attached to the plate -- just some lettuce and cucumber with a little mint or some grated carrot and coriander."

Mr. F- had 1st sat down to the instrument and sung ode 14 lib. 2 Hor. accompanying himself – then music his own composition – sang in good style – must have sung very well when his voice was younger – and German pronunciation not at all like the English – the Eheu quite different the eu Germanized into something like oi – the g in Rugis (line 3) sounded guttural, like an h – after the sixhand music M. F- at my request gave us the Russian god save the king and then our god save the queen which I sang – I then asked for the carriage – but Madame F- sat down to the instrument and played a very difficult piece of music opera 200+ (246 or 241?) printed at Boon [Bonn] par .......... some man much made of in London – giving lesson there said Mr. F- at 25/. 25 roubles – i.e. I should think one guinea? the chemical professor said the largest and best [?] oldest fabrique du porcelaine is about 20 versts from Troitsa, on the road from here to Tro-itsa – 500 workmen – difference between porcelaine et faience is that in the former the vernis goes thro’ the whole mass – in the latter – it is superficial – the Kaolin? comes from near Kalonga – but the argille should be long exposed to the air and worked about – in old establishment they have old heaps of clay – in some establishments they have heaps 60 years older – I asked if this oldness was the cause of the excellence of Chinese porcelaine – yes! not unlikely

tw: parental death, depression, drug and alcohol abuse
from the moment they were born, tyler and his siblings had their entire lives lined out for them. their father came from a family with very old money that now owned a number of lavish, upscale hotels and expected only the best from their lineage. their mother was a classically trained pianist who had toured the world as a teenage prodigy and had all the best intentions as a mother. still, to tyler, every step of the way felt like ticking off a checklist with ‘pompous ass’ listed as the end goal. top boarding schools were supposed to lead to cambridge or oxford and then prolific careers as surgeons, lawyers, members of parliament, or business moguls. tyler’s siblings all seemed to fit the bill with ease and for a while, so did tyler, until he was old enough to show any kind of personality.
(tw: parental death) growing up, ty was a goofy, naïve kid who spent all day playing music with their mother and singing at the piano with her. sitting on that piano bench was tyler’s only real escape from the elitist world they didn’t really fit into. none of their siblings had taken a real interest in of their mother’s passions, but tyler was at her side every moment they were able. rather than one of the pre-selected career paths his father insisted on, tyler grew up wanting to follow in his mother’s footsteps and be a musician. his father taught him very early on that music was not an option. it was when he shipped off for boarding school that things really escalated. by the time he was sixteen, he had been through five boarding schools. and just when they thought things couldn’t possibly get worse, the unthinkable happened and their mother died suddenly from a brain aneurism.
(tw: depression) the day they lost ty’s mother, his life fell to pieces. he fell into a deep depression and quit everything that reminded him of his mother, especially music. the only thing that fell through the cracks was football (soccer to some), which their father had always loved, so they had always hated. tyler had always been athletic but reluctant when it came to sports, but when their father put them into football this time around, they ran with a newfound rage and abandon. when his father remarried a woman half his age less than a year after becoming a widower, that increased tenfold. he threw everything into playing and training, and stopped trying to process his mother’s passing. they were noticed by a club recruiter only a couple of years later and played on a second tier team with talks of being recruited to the premier league until a few months ago, when they absolutely lost control.
(tw: drug and alcohol abuse) nothing in tyler’s life worked. their relationships with their brothers and father were positively abysmal. he’d always bonded with his only sister for being the odd ducks out, even if she’d always fit in better than him, but even she wasn’t speaking to him if she didn’t have to. they were in the closet about their sexuality and gender identity to everyone but their sister, and it was starting to eat them alive. it had been several years since the death of his mother, but tyler had succeeded in filling every moment of those years with either football or drugs & alcohol to avoid processing it (or anything else). now, the pressure was high and they felt the whole world of football watching them. eventually, they cracked. he quit his football team in a horrible screaming match with the team manager that went viral online and in a single moment, it looked like his career was over before it began.
rather than face the problems that had caused their breakdown, ty holed themself up in their family home for months, only leaving when his father threatened to cut him off if he didn’t go out and do something. in this state, his sister didn’t think they would make it on their own. it was during this time that his sister pushed them into a therapist’s office once a week and personally oversaw their recovery. not long after, his sister showed him an advert for the ss university and went behind their father’s back to pay for it. mere weeks later, tyler golightly had their life packed into suitcases and the ss university was setting sail. he left his sister with the promise that he would watch how he partied and that more than anything, he would use the experience to start over with a clean slate. now all that’s left is to do it.

–  rich kids club: tyler was once told by their father that their family had more money than god and they’ve never forgotten that. if your char was also born with a silver spoon, they may know each other already or just bond over their shared experiences! tyler hates their father and that side of their family, so they’re not always the biggest fan of other wealthy people.
–  clandestine music friends: tyler’s mother was an esteemed classical pianist and taught ty to play the piano very early on. for a long time, tyler thought they would follow in her footsteps and become a pianist as well. when she passed away, he gave up music ‘for good’. however, ever since they’ve been on the ship, they’ve been secretly picking up playing the piano again! someone is bound to have walked in on them and is now keeping their secret.
–  missed connection: ty thinks he falls in love every other minute, but if he doesn’t go for it, he usually just forgets them and moves on to the next gorgeous smile or melodic laughter. this person has been on their mind since the day they laid eyes on each other but didn’t actually get to meet. whether it was in the hall, while they were drunk at the sand bar, or even out in one of their excursions, something about them has ty going crazy.
–  exes: ty may think they fall in love more often than a character in a rom-com, but the truth of the matter is that they never really commit to a relationship long enough to get past infatuation. there may be one person they’ve been seriously in love with, but the rest were flings for a season, friends with benefits, or one night stands; short-term. not much has changed now that they’re on the ship, but with the entire cruise/schoolyear ahead of them, who’s to say it won’t?

Các thầy chị dự đoán chị sẽ tốt nghiệp cấp 3 với số điểm cao nhất (A*A*A*A*) (Chị tôi học Toán, Luật, Kinh Tế và Kinh Doanh). Thường ở Anh, cấp 3 bạn chọn học từ 3-5 môn, và dùng điểm 3 môn để nộp học chuyên sâu 1 ngành ở đại học. Chị nộp đơn và được Cambridge mời phỏng vấn. Nhưng thất bại vòng phỏng vấn.
Hồi tôi sang chị đã luôn bảo tôi phải cố gắng, cố gắng. Aim for the moon, if you don’t get the moon, you still get the stars. Phải đặt mục tiêu thật cao vào để dù mình không đạt được mục tiêu ban đầu, kết quả sau cùng cũng sẽ rất cao. Tôi biết cái mặt trăng chị muốn nói đến. Là Cambridge. Là ước mơ của chị.
Hồi còn học lớp 11 tôi có thấy 1 sự kiện được tổ chức bởi hội du học sinh Việt Nam ở Oxford nên cũng có đến Oxford tham quan trường. Những dạng sự kiện này để học sinh Việt ở Oxford hướng dẫn và động viên các em học sinh Việt Nam đang học cấp 3 ở Anh nộp vào trường Oxford. Tôi nói chuyện với vài người rồi. Đa số các anh chị đang học đại học ở đó đều có đầu tư từ bé rồi. Đa số đã học cấp 3 ở những nước phát triển như Anh, Singapore, hay New Zealand trước khi đến học ở Oxford.
Rồi cũng như ai, tôi nộp đơn vô Cambridge, điểm của tôi cũng thường, lúc đó dự đoán 3 môn của tôi là A*A*A, nhưng personal statement (bài luận cá nhân) – cái quan trọng quyết định tôi có được thư phỏng vấn hay không, thì rất tệ, vì lúc đó tôi đã biết tôi thích gì đâu. Sau này các bạn Hà Nội của tôi bảo con nhà giàu ngoài Bắc có khi thuê cả người viết luận cá nhân giúp, một bài nộp vào trường top có thể lên đến giá 70 triệu.
Tôi nhận được thư hồi âm của trường một ngày đầu tháng 12. Tôi rớt rồi. Rớt trước khi vô được vòng phỏng vấn luôn. Thật ra tôi cũng không ngạc nhiên lắm. Hồi đó tôi chưa biết cách bán bản thân. Trường đánh rớt cũng không có gì lạ.
Tôi gọi Viber thông báo cho ba tôi rằng tôi đã rớt Cambridge. Ông không có vẻ gì ngạc nhiên, đúng như dự đoán của tôi, rồi ông hỏi:
- Còn gì quan trọng để nói nữa không? Vì ba bận.
17 tuổi còn cái gì quan trọng hơn rớt đại học nữa? Ba lúc nào cũng bận như vậy. Tôi bảo không, rồi tôi cúp máy. Tôi quăng điện thoại vào một góc phòng. Ngày tháng 12, ở Anh vào đông rồi, sắp tới ngày ngắn nhất trong năm, trời tối rất nhanh. Tôi vặn cái máy sưởi nhỏ lại cho đỡ khô da, rồi tôi leo lên giường, tôi kéo chăn ngang ngực, rồi nước mắt tôi chảy ra. Tôi khóc, không có tiếng. Nhưng tôi không khóc vì rớt Cambridge.
Tôi khóc cho sự thờ ơ của ba tôi.
Còn Cambridge, chưa bao giờ là ước mơ của tôi. Cambridge là ước mơ của chị tôi.
Tôi nghĩ tôi đã bị middle child syndrome (hội chứng con thứ), chỉ hai năm ngắn ngủi được làm “con út” thì mẹ tôi lại đậu thai, và các em tôi lần lượt ra đời. Tôi không thể hoàn hảo như chị tôi, cũng không thể nhỏ bé đáng yêu, được người lớn vỗ về nâng niu như các em tôi. Người lớn dần quên lãng tôi đi.
- Như, bữa tối có rồi nè. (Nhu, dinner is ready!) – Tiếng mẹ nuôi tôi gọi, cắt đứt dòng suy nghĩ của tôi.
- Con xuống liền. (Ya, I’m coming) – Tôi lấy luôn cái chăn quẹt quẹt lên lau cái mặt nhoe nhoét nước và lầm lũi leo cầu thang xuống nhà.
Hôm nay mẹ nuôi cho ăn ngon, món tôi thích nhất, Sunday roast (món nướng Chủ Nhật), có thịt và rau củ đút lò, ăn kèm với sốt nấm (mushroom gravy). Tôi nghĩ ẩm thực Anh khá là nghèo nàn, đồ ăn của tụi Pháp ngon hơn nhiều, bất quá tôi thích Sunday roast vì tôi không có nhiều lựa chọn.
Mẹ và anh nuôi thấy tôi im lặng hơn mọi bữa cứ tưởng tôi đang buồn, nên cô gắng nói chuyện với tôi:
- Rớt chỗ này thì học chỗ khác, thiếu gì chỗ. – Cô bảo.
- Hồi xưa tao học cấp 3 toàn điểm B,C,D mà giờ tao cũng học xong thạc sỹ rồi nè. – Anh nuôi tiếp lời.
Thế là tôi lại vui lên được tí.
Sau đó mấy tháng thì tôi rớt luôn tất cả các trường còn lại trong list của tôi vì tôi toàn chọn trường thứ hạng cao :)), aim for the moon mà, miss the moon thì miss hết mọi thứ còn lại luôn :)) Trường cuối cùng trong list là University of Manchester cũng đã đòi yêu cầu 3 môn là AAB. Nhưng tôi chỉ được AAC thôi, vì tôi học ngu Hóa. Thế là tôi tạch tất cả. Và tôi qua Canada chung trường đại học với chị tôi vì trường hạng cao mà yêu cầu không cao. Nhưng tôi ngu thêm lần nữa. Vì dễ vô chưa chắc là dễ ra :))) Cuối năm đó thì tôi nổi loạn luôn và tôi bỏ học.
Sau đó đi học lại tôi đã chọn một trường rất bình thường và lần đầu tiên trong đời đi học, không còn ai hỏi tôi: “Em của Khánh Linh à?”
Những lúc không đạt được những cái mình muốn, à không, những cái tiêu chuẩn cao cao của xã hội đặt ra, tôi nghĩ mình ngu hết cứu vãn được rồi. Bởi vì thế mà mấy năm qua tôi đã đầu tư zô sắc đẹp, giờ tôi ngu nhưng tôi đẹp, tức là đỡ hơn hồi xưa, haha.
Tôi nghĩ để đánh giá một con người cần nhìn cả một quá trình của người ta, 10 hay 20 năm gì đấy, chứ nhìn vào một khoảnh khắc nhất định thì không có nghĩ lý gì.
À quên, tốt nhất là đừng đánh giá gì đi. Ai lo sống cho tốt thân người đó đi.

Traditions and Culture Behind The British Food
Great Britain is made from three different countries, England, Scotland, and Wales. Each country has its own rich culture and traditions. The diverse culture tells us about their culinary traditions. Britain had played a great role in keeping its culture and food. We have Romans who bought in cherries, cabbages, and peas along with the cultivation of crops like corn. The wine was also brought by the Romans. 
The Romans were known for building good roads that made it easy for them to transport produce all through the country. Have you ever heard of Saxons, they were excellent farmers who were known for cultivating herbs? Herbs were mostly used while preparing stews. Many of us love to eat smoked and dry fish. It was the Vikings and Danes who brought this technique. In some parts of England especially the North-East coasts, we can see people still eating slices of meat as a tradition which is served on Burn’s night which falls on 25th January in Scotland. British food is always loved worldwide and British housewives would always like to prepare their favorite food with York ham. Many of us are nor aware that York ham was first smoked using sawdust of the oak trees.

British traditional food is full breakfast, Fish and Chips, the Sunday Roast, Steak, and Kidney Pie, Shepherds Pie, Bangers, and Mash. Due to diverse cultures, Britain has focused on a wide variety of foods from different cuisines of Europe, India, and other parts of the world. Several regional dishes are associated with British cuisine as it’s within the border with English, Scottish and Welsh cuisine and Northern Irish cuisines. Each place has come up with its regional dishes like fish and chips, Yorkshire pudding, Cumberland sausage, Arbroath Smokie, and Welsh Cakes.

In the 20th Century, we have seen a huge change in the food recipes as the British people had the availability of fresh products. They were willing to add other cultural recipes and also include other cultural foods from Italy and India. British food once used to be less spicy or no spice at all. As time changed they tried to use different herbs and spices to create spiced British food in this medieval area. The modern era is highly getting influenced by the Mediterranean, Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asian cuisines. We could see a subsequent fading of northern and central European cuisines.
Here in British culture, Christmas dinner is special. Turkey and Christmas pudding is more popular from the 16th century. Apart from roast turkey we also have roast beef or ham to which stuffed, gravy, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, and vegetables are served.  Christmas pudding-like Yule Log, Mince Pies, Cakes, etc. are popular with deserts.

Food Varieties Place Wise:
Anglo Indian Cuisine: It is a traditional British food like roast beef with a little touch of Indian spices such as cloves and red chilies. Fish and meat are cooked with vegetables like an Indian curry. In Anglo-Indian food, we often see the use of yogurt, coconut, and almonds. We have different flavors for roasts, curries, rice dishes, and bread.
English Cuisine: English food is associated with England. British food has distinct flavors by adding ingredients from North America, China, and India.
Northern Irish Cuisine: It’s similar to the Islands of Ireland. The Ulster Fry is a popular dish here.
Scottish Cuisine: Its traditions are uprooted from Scotland. Traditional Scottish dishes are haggis and Scotland is known for producing high-quality beef, lamb, potatoes, oats, and seafood.
Welsh Cuisine: It’s highly influenced by British cuisine. Beef and Dairy cattle are widely seen here. Meat is very closely associated with Welsh cooking.
