Sushil Kumar – Charged in murder case, India’s Wrestling hero ‘falls’ bringing disrepute to his 'Chhatrasal breeding ground'
Tumblr media
India's Wrestling hero, Sushil Kumar is being charged in murder case of junior champion Sagar Dhankhad within Chhatrasal Stadium. Though Kumar had denied involvement in the case, Delhi Police issued a non-bailable warrant against the wrestler.
The only Indian in ‘Independent India’ to win two of the coveted Olympic medals (Bronze-2008, Silver-2012) in individual events; the most decorated wrestler India has ever produced: India’s only world champion in wrestling (2010) – these are just a few of the numerous accolades that can be chalked up to the incredible Sushil Kumar. He has been a shining light for Sports in India, especially at the Olympic Games, where the country has tasted limited success. Therefore it came as a massive shock to the people of the entire country when this reserved and diminutive grappler, was named as the prime suspect in the murder of 23-year old, former junior national Wrestling champion Sagar Dhankhad, within the parking lot of the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi.
The Incident
On May 4, 2021, a violent altercation between two Wrestling groups at the Chhatrasal Stadium, ended in a shootout. Several of the people involved, needing to be rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, Dhankad succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. According to police reports, a few of the other individuals who were involved in the shooting were - Ajay, Prince Dalal, Sonu, Sagar, and Amit.
As an aftermath of this shooting spree, Sushil Kumar had an FIR of Murder (Section 302), Abduction (Section 365), and Criminal Conspiracy (120-B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Model Town Police Station. A Delhi court issued non-bailable warrants for the arrests of Kumar and nine others. This came after the Delhi Police had already issued a “Look-Out-Circular”, or LOC, against him. On May 5, the day after the incident, Kumar made a statement that neither he nor any of his wrestlers were involved in any of the events that transpired, the previous day. He has been absconding ever since May 6.
The Delhi Police had to return empty-handed when they raided his house in an attempt to nab the world champion wrestler. On May 17, the Delhi Police announced that they will award INR 1,00,000 to anyone who can provide credible information, which leads to the arrest of Sushil Kumar. PTI reported that Kumar had already made an approach to the Delhi Rohini court, looking for protection from arrest. He had claimed that there was bias in the probe against him and that none of the injuries sustained by the victim could be attributed to him.
The Public Prosecutor, however, stated that the police had uncovered electronic evidence that incriminates Kumar and thus requested that his petition should be dismissed. The prosecutor, Atul Srivastava, went on further to claim that the champion wrestler is a ‘flight risk’. The defense attorney, on the other hand, argued that there was no necessity for custodial interrogation since as all the recoveries, that included vehicle(s), weapon(s), etc. had been made by the police. Kumar’s anticipatory bail plea was however completely rejected by the Rohini court, which had Additional sessions judge, Jagdish Kumar, presiding over it (May 18).
Sushil Kumar- Rise to Fame
Also called Sushil Pehelwan by those close to him, Kumar (son of a DTC bus conductor) hails from the village of Baprola, in Najafgarh. He took up the sport after being inspired by his cousin Sandeep, who also used to be a wrestler. Sandeep gave up on his dreams so that Sushil could pursue his, as their family could only garner enough funds to support one wrestler in the family.
A young Sushil Kumar came to the Chhatrasal Stadium at the tender age of 14 and it was here that he met famous former wrestler Satpal Singh and became his pupil. Sushil Kumar first came into prominence in 1998, after he won the World Cadet Games in Poland. It was his bronze medal win that turned the then ‘almost unknown’ grappler into a household name, overnight. The fame and popularity of the Chhatrasal Stadium kept on increasing largely, if not only, because of Kumar, and by 2012 the Stadium had become India’s premier wrestling centre.
Chhatrasal Stadium- Wrestlers' Breeding Ground
In the 2012 London Olympics, apart from Kumar who bagged a silver medal, his childhood friend and fellow Chhatrasal trainee Yogeshwar Dutt also brought home an Olympic bronze medal. Amit Dahiya, another trainee from Chhatrasal became the youngest Indian to compete at the Olympics at 18 years old. The Chhatrasal Stadium has been the breeding ground for several other talented wrestlers like - Bajrang Punia (a Tokyo medal favorite), Ravi Dahiya, and Deepak Punia, who will all compete in the Tokyo Olympics. Kumar’s life became even more intertwined with the stadium when he married Satpal Singh’s daughter, Savi Kumar in 2011. In the eyes of many, he did so purely out of respect for his teacher and the couple has two children.
The controversial Kumar
Presently, one of the administrators of the Chhatrapal Stadium, Sushil Kumar’s problems began back in the fag end of 2012, when he had a public fallout with Yogeshwar Dutt. Following the incident, Dutt left to form his own training centre and was later joined by a senior coach from Chhatrasal, who had alleged that Kumar had assaulted him. In fact, reports surfaced about several coaches having fallouts with the former World Champion.
The situation worsened when in 2016 he got involved in a dispute, regarding the representation of India at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, with the National Wrestling Federation. Maharashtra wrestler Narsingh Yadav had won a quota for India, by winning the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships. Kumar, also training for Rio at the time, wanted a selection trial, owing to his impeccable record. The Wrestling Federation of India, however, refused to do so. He then moved his plea to the Delhi High Court, who also dismissed it. In an incredible turn of events, Narsingh Yadav later tested positive for anabolic steroids, before the Olympics. He alleged that during a national camp held in Sonpeta, his food had been tampered with, by a young wrestler from Chhatrasal. This turned into an extremely long-drawn fight, which even got the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) involved. Unfortunately for Yadav, in 2019, the CBI rejected his sabotage theory.
Kumar has also had an extremely ill-tempered bout in 2017 when a group of individuals assaulted his opponents, Parveen Rana, and Rana’s brother, after the national selection trials. Rana alleged that all of the assaulters were Kumar’s men. The two of them had to seek immediate medical attention at a hospital. An FIR was registered against Kumar and his men.
All of these incidents have definitely dealt a mighty blow to Kumar, but none so much as being the prime suspect in a murder case. The charges are so severe that there are already talks of him being stripped of the prestigious Khel Ratna, Arjuna, and Padma Shri Awards. Delhi Police are combing New Delhi and surrounding areas in search of the grappler who has managed to evade police detection until now. Importantly though, it must be remembered that Sushil Kumar’s involvement in the awful incident that took a young man’s life, is yet to be proven in a court of law. Hence, as of yet, he is still innocent until proven guilty. It can however be stated with certainty that the once highly revered, former World Champion wrestler’s reputation, has been tarnished forever.

Lalu Yadav, the leader of Bihar, that son of Bihar, who did not give heaven to the underprivileged, but gave his voice.
Among the castes deprived of Lalu Yadav's coming to power, it was realized that someone in their midst or someone with sympathy for them is sitting above.
Bihar was the most sick, poor and uneducated state of the country even before Lalu Yadav.  Bihar is the sickest, poorest and uneducated state, even after the end of Lalu Prasad's rule for 14 years.  Therefore, this question is irrelevant why Lalu Prasad did not make Bihar into Europe.
When we do not ask this question to Chief Ministers like Shri Krishna Sinha, Mahamaya Prasad Singh, Kedar Pandey, KB Sahai, Bindeshwari Dubey, Bhagwat Jha, Jagannath Mishra, Nitish Kumar, and Finance Minister Sushil Modi for most of the last 15 years, then this question only  How can Lalu Prasad be asked?
The problem of Bihar's backwardness has to be simplified by assuming the responsibility of the Chief Ministers or any one Chief Minister.  Why Bihar became the backward model of India's development model, many more factories have to be seen for this.  Lalu's story is probably something else.
This question is always asked in Lalu Yadav about how this person has remained relevant in politics for so long.  Lalu Yadav did something, due to which he is not ending in the politics of Bihar and India.  By the way, the era is against them.
Almost everyone is their opponent and wishes for their end.  The media is against him.  The bureaucrat is against them.  Investigation agencies are against him.  The court does not take pity on them.  The Congress tried its best to settle them for a time.
When the Janata Dal government was at the Center and HD Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister, the CBI filed a case against him for the first time in that period and the BJP was lying against him.  But it is something that this man does not end.  All predictions of his political death have been proved wrong.  His party has broken many times.  Sometimes Nitish Kumar left, sometimes Sharad Yadav, sometimes Pappu Yadav and sometimes Ramkripal.  But Lalu is that made.
Even today, Lalu Yadav's party is the largest party in the Bihar Assembly.  RJD won 81 out of 243 MLAs.  At the time when Narendra Modi's wave was being considered all over the country and Modi-Amit Shah duo had achieved the country's most effective vote-making machine, Lalu Yadav stopped the BJP in the 2015 Bihar assembly elections.
By becoming just 53 seats in Bihar in 2015, BJP became the third-ranked political force in the state.  Lalu Yadav is in jail today, but when he comes to Delhi for treatment, from Rahul Gandhi to leaders of many political parties come to meet him.  When his political heir Tejashwi Yadav calls the opposition parties on one platform in Delhi, each party sends its biggest leader there.  Tejaswi Yadav's platform is where political opponents like Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal come on one platform.
Then the same question.  After all, what did Lalu Yadav give to the people of Bihar that the public repeatedly gives their votes to them?  It can be tried to look at it from the prism of the Yadav caste, but even here a satisfactory answer is not found.  Why only Bihar with one caste vote, no one can win even one assembly seat anywhere in the country.
People who have called Lalu Yadav a Yadav leader are unable to understand Lalu Yadav.  The truth is that not all Yadavs of Bihar are also supporters of Lalu Yadav.  Many Yadav leaders opposing Lalu Yadav have been winning elections from Yadav-dominated seats.  Such leaders include Sharad Yadav, Hukmdev Narayan Yadav to Pappu Yadav and Ramkripal Yadav.
Lalu Yadav is actually the product of a political process that started in Bihar in the late 1980s, which is called Christoph Jeffrey Silent Revolution.  It began with political ambitions in the Dalit, Backward and Intermediate castes, and accordingly, political mobilization and it led to new political powers and leaders in many states.  Lalu Prasad led the same stream in Bihar.
For the first time in a state with backward and feudal values like Bihar, a leader was replying to the feudalists in his language.  They were challenging the cultural and political domination of the Savarnas in a terrible way.
Lalu Yadav first thought about the shepherd school so that the children of those doing animal husbandry could get education.  This experiment was not successful, but even thinking about it was not an ordinary thing.  Poor and slum children were not cleaned forever by bathing them with fire pipes.  But it turns out that there is someone who cares for them.  Bringing a woman of the Mushar caste to the Lok Sabha was a major initiative to bring a marginalized community into the mainstream of the nation.  Lalu Yadav strictly followed the constitutional provisions of reservation in his first term.
These were all those works which were being done at the level of governance.  But due to Lalu Yadav being in power, many processes started in the society as well.  Its effect reached those people, who generally could neither avail of any government scheme nor the government reaches them.  Among the underprivileged castes of the society, it was realized that someone in their midst or someone with sympathy for them is sitting above.  This feeling can neither be measured, nor is there any data of it.  It can only be felt.  It seems that the underprivileged of Bihar felt it.
Due to Lalu Yadav not being in power, that social group feels lonely and orphaned, so he votes for Lalu Yadav every time.  A similar feeling exists among Muslims.  The entire administration may not be very effective under Lalu Yadav's rule, but he was so effective that he kept the rioters under control.
Since Lalu Yadav did not want there to be riots in the state, he stopped the riots in Bihar by being agile with the otherwise dysfunctional administration of Bihar.  Because of this, minorities still have faith in Lalu Prasad.  In the course of the Ram Mandir movement in 1990, when LK Advani was walking around the country with a chariot and there were riots on the journey route, only Lalu Prasad showed the courage to stop this chariot.  LK Advani was arrested and Advani's dream of reaching Ayodhya with a chariot was defeated.
Even in 2015, when it seemed that Narendra Modi would win the whole country and the RSS was again talking of a constitutional review, Lalu Prasad made a statement regarding reservation of Mohan Bhagwat the main issue of the election and challenged that Mai  If you have drunk milk, show it after finishing the reservation.  Lalu Yadav demolished the BJP's entire plan to make the election communal and bring the cow to the center of the election.  It is another matter that Nitish Kumar handed over that anti-BJP mandate to BJP.
As long as a large section of Dalits and backward castes and minorities in Bihar are with Lalu Prasad, how can Lalu Prasad's politics end?  That's why Lalu Yadav remains.  Despite all the diseases and being in jail.  He did not give heaven to the underprivileged of Bihar, but gave his voice.  is not no passing craze.

Bankers worry over arrest of Bank of Maharashtra CEO, want Govt to intervene
The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) on Friday came out in support of Bank of Maharashtra’s top officials, just two days after they were arrested.
The IBA met with top officials from public sector banks, private sector banks and foreign lenders and decided to seek the Finance Ministry’s intervention over the sudden arrests on Wednesday.
“All the bankers unanioumously expressed anguish and concerns for what has transpired there for bonafide decision taken in the discharge of official duties…The officials are worried that genuine banking decisions are being questioned,” said VG Kannan, Chief Executive Officer of IBA, after a meeting that lasted close to three hours.
He said the senior officials of the bank have been arrested for criminal conspiracy and “in violation of Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishment Acts, 1999”, adding that this is not applicable to banks.
Bankers have also sought the government’s help to form an independent committee with representatives from both the government and the Reserve Bank of India, and retired bankers.
This committee will be formed to “give clearance for initiating criminal proceeding on senior executives of banks to ensure smooth functioning of banking industry and enabling decision making,” Kannan said in an emergency conference with reporters after the meeting.
IBA will also ask the government to consider an insurance cover for bankers for the costs incurred on fighting such cases after their retirement.
Arrest after yoga class
The concerns come after Bank of Maharashtra CEO Ravindra Marathe was arrested on Wednesday by the Pune police’s economic offences wing, while he was returning from his yoga class.
Marathe’s colleagues, the bank’s executive director Rajendra Gupta, zonal manager Nityanand Deshpande and former chairman Sushil Muhnot were also arrested for allegedly extending loans to the scam-tainted DSK Group.
Condemning the arrest, Kannan said that the officials were now behind bars despite the bank disclosing that the loan exposure to DSK Group was as low as Rs 94 crore, and was fully secured and disbursed before Marathe took charge.
IBA-Government meet soon
Kannan also said that as per RBI guidelines, frauds involving amounts exceeding Rs 25 crore are to be only handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and not the state police.
The IBA has sought appointment with senior government officials sometime next week to present a detailed memo to take remedial action.
“The entire banking community is with the BoM management and the IBA has decided to approach the highest authority,” Kannan said.
The IBA’s solidarity comes a day after the Bank of Maharashtra’s shareholders, and bank unions led by the All-India Bank Employees Association, had backed Marathe.
In a letter to Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar, the bank unions had said it was surprising that the arrested bank executives were not connected with the cheating by DSK Group.
