Sword and sandal stuff tends to be pretty low on my list when#There are still gialli and poliziotteschi to be enjoyed. But Bava is Bava and hell if that man didn't know how to spin magic out of just#About anything. Here he's working on a highly unofficial remake of Kirk Douglas vehicle The Vikings‚ a smash hit just a couple of years#Earlier. Bava's film follows the plot pretty closely (one might almost say close enough to make the lawyers worry)‚ right down to certain#Setpieces and character names‚ but it's unmistakably his work; that brash‚ abstract use of colour and lighting‚ not to mention a decidedly#Italian approach to the religious elements of the plot (the Vikings seem to live in an underground lair that's surely designed to bring to#Mind images of the xtian hell‚ not to mention the strange use of Catholic imagery by supposed pagans (and let's not even get started on#These Vikings worshipping Vestal Virgins‚ an entirely Roman phenomenon). The result is a little messy‚ sure‚ but in true Bava style it's an#Absolutely beautiful mess full of stunningly attractive‚ sweaty ppl having emotional fights in avant garde sets. What more could you want?
