365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #52: Witness (1985) - dir. Peter Weir
You can count me in as a fan of Peter Weir, the Australian director who brought style and substance to such films as Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), The Last Wave (1977), Dead Poets Society (1989) and The Truman Show (1998). That being said, I was disheartened to discover that his acclaimed drama Witness, the recipient of many honors in the 1985-1986 award season, is a massive letdown.
In a performance confusingly considered good enough to deserve an Oscar nomination, Harrison Ford stars as John Book, a tough Philadelphia detective who takes it upon himself to protect a young Amish boy, Samuel Lapp (Lukas Haas), and his widowed mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis), when Samuel sees a vicious murder occur in the bathroom of an Amtrak station. After much Sturm und Drang, Book accompanies the family back to their town, where he goes undercover in the Amish community. This is far less suspenseful than it sounds since most of the tension emanates from the chemistry between Book and Rachel, rather than their fears of being tracked down by the villains of the piece. For a crime story, Witness is severely lacking in thrills.
It’s fun to see familiar faces pop up, like Josef Sommer, Jan Rubes, Danny Glover, Brent Jennings, Patti LuPone, Viggo Mortensen (his big-screen debut), Timothy Carhart, Sylvia Kauders, Robert Earl Jones and, in my favorite bit of casting, Alexander Godunov as an Amish farmer who is a rival with Harrison Ford for Kelly McGillis’ affections. I also appreciate the evocative score by Maurice Jarre and the rich cinematography by John Seale, who has lensed such varied titles as The Hitcher, Dead Poets Society, The English Patient, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Mad Max: Fury Road in his lengthy career. (Peter Weir’s films are nothing if not packed to the gills with unforgettable images.) The big problem besides the weak story, though, is Harrison Ford, who coasts along on his usual gruff, stoic schtick, which just doesn’t work for me in this case. Kelly McGillis, on the other hand, does very well in her role, while Lukas Haas fulfills the fairly simple requirement of looking sweet and lamblike as the innocent eyewitness; there may have been better child actors in the 1980s, but I’m sure that the screenplay is mostly to blame for Haas having so little to do as Samuel.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #123: Predator 2 (1990) - dir. Stephen Hopkins
I’ll try any Bill Paxton movie once, and when I saw that Predator 2 would be on TV, I figured, “Why not?” I didn’t love the first installment in the Predator series when I watched it last year, but I thought the premise of the alien hunter somehow ending up in an apocalyptic Los Angeles hellscape circa 1997 might be fun. Boy, was I wrong. The entire plot can be boiled down thusly: a ragtag bunch of cops (Danny Glover, Rubén Blades, Maria Conchita Alonso, Paxton) try to fight the Predator (Kevin Peter Hall) without knowing or understanding what it is; some law enforcement dudes (Gary Busey, Robert Davi, Adam Baldwin) act like know-it-all assholes in the process; my two favorite performances are found in minor roles from character actresses Lilyan Chauvin and Sylvia Kauders, who portray a medical examiner and a broom-wielding civilian, respectively. (Good to know that no matter how far our country devolves, women will still have all the best answers to any problem.) We never learn how or why the Predator and his extraterrestrial comrades made their way to the City Angels, but does it even matter in a movie so unengaging that - aside from a genuinely suspenseful couple of scenes set on a train and in a train station - it will barely leave a blip in my memory of cinematic experiences?
