VIRGINIA
2021 Jul 7 (Wed) – We have been working furiously on finalizing plans for the NY Caravan.  We have had to change some things.  One restaurant said they are changing their prices every week because of the high price of chicken.  Really??? How do you run a business like that?
We set off for NY tomorrow, traveling through PA.  Joe & Diane and Rick & Brenda will travel with us.  Ed & Sue were supposed to go with us but they are stuck here getting their rig fixed.  Maybe they’ll be able to join us in a day or two.  Hank & Brenda will be meeting us at the next campground in Intercourse, PA.  We will be there for 3 nights.  The pre-caravan is on!
2021 Jul 4 (Sun) – We took Ed & Sue and Joe & Diane over to the PX and Commissary this morning.  Neither of them is retired so they are not entitled to shop in either store. We show our ID and they get to buy what they want.
After lunch, we did laundry.  Sheba hawked up a hairball last night and left it on the sheet.  So we pulled the sheet off and took it along with the rest of the dirty clothes, over to the laundry room.
We all enjoyed a barbecue for dinner.  Afterward, we watched the fireworks that people were setting off across the bay.  There was quite a bit.
2021 Jul 3 (Sat) – The four of us went to Washington’s Distillery & Gristmill.  It was quite interesting.  Washington had to be convinced to put the stills on his farm but once he did, he had five installed.  His first year of operation, he made more money from whiskey sales than he did from all of his other endeavors combined.  With his gristmill, he was producing flour, grits, cornmeal, and livestock feed.  He was quite the entrepreneur.
We stopped at the post office to pick up a package the Rick & Brenda have been waiting for, but it hadn’t arrived.  Then we shopped at the Commissary.  Brenda made hamburgers and baked beans for dinner.  We put out hors oeuvres and drinks for happy hour.  Joe & Diane and Ed & Sue came over to join us for dinner.  (Ed and Sue were supposed to be here but their RV and car both broke down on the way to Fort Belvoir.  They are currently staying at a hotel on base while they wait for repairs.)
After dinner, we all gathered around for a campfire.
2021 Jul 2 (Fri) – Joe & Diane lent their car to the couple that broke down.  Not only did their motorhome breakdown, but their car did as well.  Both are getting worked on today.  Since Joe & Diane lent their car to their friends, they needed a ride to the commissary.  We took them at 9 this morning.  They picked up some items at the PX, then food at the commissary.
At 1:00 PM, we met Rick & Brenda and drove to the Pope-Leheighy House.  It is a home that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a beautiful architecture and we enjoyed the tour.  Located next to the house was Woodlawn.  This was a beautiful colonial home built by George Washington for his nephew and granddaughter-in-law.  He gave them the house and 2,000 acres from his Mount Vernon property. Unfortunately, we were not able to tour the house.  They were just finishing up a needlepoint display and they had taken all the house decorations down for the display.  They will be putting everything back together and opening to tours again after July 25.
At dinnertime, I cooked zucchini chips and Paul barbecued an Alaskan salmon. Rick & Brenda made the salad and cooked up some scallops.  It was a good meal.  Afterward, we had a campfire.
2021 Jul 1 (Thu) – We went food shopping at Amazon Green today. It was a near digital experience.  They have a shopping cart with a scanner.  You dial up the app on your smart phone.  Then as you pick up each item you want to buy, you scan it on your phone.  Shopping bags are already located in your shopping cart; you put the items you scan in your bags.  When you are done, your credit card is charged (Amazon has that info on file) and you leave.  You have no need to go to the cashier.  We changed our minds at the last minute and did not use the app.  I do not like anything that holds on to the information about my credit cards or bank accounts.  We shopped the old fashioned way.
I went to Great Clips for a haircut.  I tried to talk with the hairdresser but she spoke very poor English and she was hard to understand.  After I got home, I did more chopping on my bangs as I felt they were still too long.
We stopped at Baja Fresh for lunch.  It was a kind of Mexican fast food place.  The food was ok.  I cooked an elbow macaroni dish for dinner which we shared with Rick & Brenda.
I drove to the campground office to pick up the check-in documents for 3 folks coming into the campground.  The office closed at 3 and they still weren’t in.  George & Sue arrived and I gave them their paperwork.  Joe & Diane arrived later around 6; the couple traveling with them had a breakdown and they left them on the road waiting for a tow. Joe & Diane will be traveling with us through Pennsylvania to the New York caravan.
2021 Jun 30 (Wed) – We drove over to WalMart to get an oil change in the truck. While it was being serviced, we walked across the road to Panera Bread and had bagels for breakfast.  We then walked next door and wandered through the World Market then Home Goods looking for new rugs for the RV.  We didn’t find what we wanted.
When the truck was done, we drove back to the base PX and bought a new grill.  Paul and Rick had priced the grill on the internet last night and the PX was the cheapest price.  Add to that the fact that they don’t charge tax in the PX and we had a real good savings.
Merlin came by us wearing his face mask.  He said he started feeling bad last night and worse today.  So he went to the base hospital and got tested for COVID-19 . . . just in case.
Bonnie has had diarrhea for on and off for the past five days.  We cooked chicken and rice for her one day.  It seemed to help then things got worse again.
Two rigs have dropped out of the New York caravan. That brings us down to 16 paying rigs. One more drop out, and we will be at the threshold for canceling the caravan.  Hope we don’t lose anyone else.
2021 Jun 29 (Tue) – The four of us went to the National U.S. Army Museum.  It is new and we haven’t been here before.  We spent over 3 hours wandering around the displays.  There was so much to read and look at.  We had lunch in the cafeteria.  During our visit, we found out that the museum only opened in October last year, 2020, then closed a month later.  They just reopened 2 weeks ago.
After we got back, we had dinner together.  Brenda made pasta and I made salad.  Everything was very good.  Merlin was too tired to join us.
2021 Jun 28 (Mon) – We went into town to look for a grill. We couldn’t find what we wanted. We went to the PX and looked for an RV dealer nearby but there were none.  We picked up pet food at Pet Smart and found a toy for Sheba.  We were delighted!  Lunch was at Famous Dave’s.  I had ribs and Paul had burnt tips.  The food was on the spicy side.
Rick & Brenda came over for drinks.  We made margaritas.  Another SMART member, Merlin, pulled in today.
2021 Jun 27 (Sun) – We went into Washington, D.C. for a 12:15 p.m. admission to the International Spy Museum.  Brenda & Rick drove.  We had been there in 2013.  The building and entire area was totally different from when we were last there. The place was huge!  You could easily take 3-4 hours to see everything. The museum was very crowded and it was difficult to get near much of the displays.  But we all managed to enjoy the place any way.
When we got back to the campground, Rick & Brenda brought their grill over and we enjoyed steak, potatoes and salad.  We visited afterward as it was too breezy to work on the travel guides. We have time to get to them. There’s no hurry.
2021 Jun 26 (Sat) – We did our laundry early this morning. The laundry room was full of gnats and other flying insects.  We brought wipes to clean off the tables and machines so we could fold our clothes. It was gross!
We also drove to Food Lion to pick up some groceries and to Office Depot to get the printed copies of the Travel Guide.  We stopped at McDonald’s for lunch; something we don’t do very often.
We drove to George Mason Gunston Hall with Rick & Brenda this afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. tour  It was an 1800th century home of one of America’s founding fathers.  Mason wrote Virginia’s Bill of Rights, which Jefferson later modeled to write the Bill of Rights for the new nation.  It was a lovely home and had several outbuildings on the property to explore as well.
Afterward, we stopped at Fair Winds Brewing for beer and BBQ.  We all sat out on the patio and enjoyed beers (except me since I don’t care for beer) and food.  When we got back, we started work on putting the travel guides together. It was slightly breezy and made it difficult to work but we were able to get 11 books done.
2021 Jun 25 (Fri) – We finished up the Travel Guide this morning. Brenda and Rick picked us up and we drove first, to Office Depot, then to Occoquan, the quaint little town we discovered a few years ago.  We had lunch at a restaurant on a patio overlooking the Occoquan River.  There were several people in kayaks and on paddle boards.
After lunch, we walked down the picturesque street with its historic buildings. We popped into a chocolate shop and had a wonderful visit with the owner of the establishment.  He gave us quite an education on cacao beans and the chocolate process.  We all bought chocolate bars.
More walking and exploring, then we stopped in to the VFW Lodge.  We sat at the bar and ordered cocktails only to be told they only serve wine and beer.  It didn’t fit the bill so we left.
We went to a Tiki Bar on the river and had cocktails on the patio then returned to the campground around 5:30 p.m.
2021 Jun 24 (Thu) – We pulled up stakes and left Fort A.P. Hill at 10:15 a.m.  It was an easy two hour drive to Fort Belvoir.  We had our site number already so we drove directly to the campground rather than stop first at Outdoor Recreation.  Oops!  There was a gated entry into the campground and no room to turn around.  I called the office and got the gate code and we parked on our assigned campsite.  After set up, we hurried over to Outdoor Rec, got checked in, got our permit and other paperwork, then rushed to the main gate to help Brenda & Rick get passes onto base.  They were already there and walking out of the visitor center with their passes.  We got in front of them and led the way to the campground.  Since we had the gate code and they knew their site assignment, we led them directly to the campground.  We advised them to sign in at Outdoor Rec after they were set up.  They didn’t hear (or understand) what we said and took their time setting up.  By the time they went over to check in, the office was closed (open from 9 to 3).
At 4 p.m., Brenda and Rick came over and we had happy hour until 5:30 p.m.  When they were gone, I popped a pizza in the oven for dinner.  Gene (President of the Nomads) and Sharon stopped by.  They are only here for the one night.  After pizza, we played card games.  SYN (Screw Your Neighbor) and Kings in the Corner were a lot of fun. They left when the sun was going down and it was getting cold.
Tonight was the last Supermoon of the year.  It is called a Strawberry Moon, because it is when the strawberries are in season.  It was a beautiful sight.
2021 Jun 23 (Wed) – We stayed in the campground all day working on the Travel Guide for the caravan.  We are pushing to get this done so we can get it copied at the next town. There won’t be any big towns after we leave Fort Belvoir.
2021 Jun 22 (Tue) – We packed up and left Verona at 9:25 a.m. It rained on and off during the drive to Bowling Green where we are caped at Fort A.P. Hill.  It is a fairly new campground with full hookups.  The campground is about half full.  We have a pull through site with no shade.  We are only here for two nights.  We will try to finish up the travel guide so we can get it copied while we are at Fort Belvoir.  We don’t think there will be any big cities between there and when we start the caravan in New York.
2021 Jun 21 (Mon – First Day of Summer) – We stayed in the campground all day today, working on the travel guide and maps of the NY Caravan.  We only have a few days left before we start to join up with other members of the caravan in D.C.  We are almost done.
2021 Jun 20 (Sun) – We drove to the Grand Caverns this morning. I bought a two-for-one ticket on Groupon and $40 tickets wound up costing us $19.99.  That’s a pretty good deal!  The caverns were fantastic; every bit as phenomenal as Mammoth or Carlsbad Caverns.  The rooms were huge and there were lots of speleoforms to admire.  In addition, they had formations called shields.  No one knows how they form but they seem to be unique to these caverns.
We went to Rack ‘Em Smack ‘Em for lunch.  It was a ribs place.  They were OK. Paul had mac & cheese.  Still pink like them put ketchup in it.      After the caves, we went to the Barren Ridge Winery.  We were supposed to make a reservation ahead of time but didn’t. They were able to seat us out on the patio any way.  I didn’t like any of the white wines.  Paul liked one of the reds and we both enjoyed the port.  So we bought 2 bottles of port and one bottle of the red wine.
I cooked some meatballs for dinner that we had bought at the supermarket the other day. They were so spicy hot!  I took one bite and pushed them aside.  We wound up heating up a pizza for dinner.
The campground pretty much emptied out today.  I am glad we left for the day so we didn’t get caught up in all the activity of so many trailers moving out.
One of the campgrounds we will be going to upstate during the caravan tried to call but I told them to get back to us on Tuesday when we move.  Hopefully, the cell phone signal will be better.
2021 Jun 19 (Sat) – We worked on the travel guide.  At noon, we packed it in and drove into town for lunch at the Edelweiss Restaurant.  It was a German restaurant with an authentic German waitress.  The food was good, as was the wine and beer.   Next stop was at PetCo to pick up dog food then to Kroeger for groceries and cat food.  Since the cell phone signal is so bad in camp, we made a couple of calls to friends and our grandson while we were out and the signal was good.
The campground is chock full of campers.  There is a lazy river that runs next to the campground where they have tubing. Groups of tubers walk by with their big tubes on the way to the launch point.  The day is very warm and muggy.  I bet the water feels good.
Bonnie woke Paul up at 2:30 a.m.  She has diarrhea.  She’s been good for a long time.  We stopped giving her the supplements and goat’s milk when we started making sure the food we give her is AAFCO approved.  That seems to have been good enough.  We’ll see if this is one day or another bout.
2021 Jun 18 (Fri) – Work on the travel guide is going slow. The problem is the very poor internet signal here in the campground.  We just can’t connect which makes it impossible for Paul to get the maps done.
We finally took a break at noon and drove into town for lunch.  Staunton (pronounced STAN-TEN) is a very lovely, historic town with lots of brick buildings and round towers.  We had lunch at the Clock Tower Eats & Sweets. The food was bland and unappealing. And the waitress was slow.
After lunch, we walked down the block to the Camera Heritage Museum.  What a fascinating place!  The museum, if you could call it that, was a small store front jam packed with cameras from all eras.  The owner followed us around the store as we admired all the cameras, regaling us with stories of cameras and pictures.  His collection was amazing, yet he said it only represented about 25% of his total collection.  He is trying to raise money to buy a building that can house his collection.  Trip Advisor voted him among the top world attractions.  Quite an honor.  Unfortunately, he needs to raise millions of dollars before he can reach his goal.  He only has four years left to do it.
When we returned to the campground, there was a long line of RVs coming in.  We sat in our chairs and watched droves of campers arrive all afternoon long.  The campground of more than 200 sites filled up almost completely.  There are lots of children and golf carts.  The smell of outdoor cooking and campfires fills the air. We tried to have a campfire but it was too hot sitting in the sun in front of the fire.  We got up halfway through and went back in to the air conditioning to watch the fire through the window.  Lol.
2021 Jun 17 (Thu) – We went to the Augusta Military Museum. When a soldier returned home after the Civil War, he found all the schools burned down.  Wanting the boys/men to have a decent education, he built a school.  It later became a military academy when it was obvious that better discipline was needed. But it was not intended to be a preparatory school for military service, although many of the boys went on to service in the military.  The school remained in service until 1984 when it closed due to financial difficulties. The museum was in the home of the former schoolmaster and exhibits were displayed in four small rooms on the first floor.  We also watched a half hour video about the school and the men who attended.
Next, we went to a local restaurant for lunch.  The interior had tables and booths arrayed around a large, open room. The waitress was very fast and efficient – a delight down here in the south.  The food, however, was terrible.  I had a chicken salad wrap that had too much vinegar in it.  Paul had a mixed wrap that was very dry (it was ham, turkey, cheese, tomato and lettuce).  It needed mayonnaise.  His mac & cheese was pink, making us think they put ketchup in it.
After lunch, we went to the Stonewall Brigade Museum.  It was all about the history of a local unit from the French & Indian Wars to today’s Gulf War.  It was small compared to many other museums we have been to but it accomplished its purpose.      The campground is filling up.  It will be full this weekend.  The camper next to us has two large dogs that they don’t leash.  In addition, the owner doesn’t pay attention to what his dogs are going so that means he’s not picking up after them.  We will have to make a complaint.
The Verizon cell service around here sucks!  I can’t open the mail and other postings just sit there.  The Internet is inaccessible at this point.  Even in town, the service is severely limited. This town must be down in a big hole. **sigh**  Not even the cell phone booster we bought is helping.
2021 Jun 16 (Wed) – We rode to Staunton today. First stop was at the Yelping Dog for lunch.  It was a pizza and taproom.  We each had a glass of wine and a sandwich.  After lunch, we walked up and down the street.  The town was very quaint and had lots of historic buildings and shops.
Next, we went to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum.  There were three buildings.  The first one we entered was the home that Woodrow Wilson was born in.  He only lived in the house for 18 months then his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There was lots of family in Staunton though, so they came back to visit often.  Woodrow Wilson always thought of Staunton, VA as his home even though his family moved several times.  He was the only president to earn a doctorate despite the fact that he had a learning disability that made it very difficult for him to read.  What an interesting character he was!
The middle building was a private home where they placed the ever popular gift shop. The third building was the museum. There was a display of a WWI trench. That kind of thing always makes me shudder.  It was thought to be so cutting edge in its day yet it was so barbaric.  Ugh.  We walked through rooms with lots of plaques to read and artifacts to view.
2021 Jun 15 (Tue) – We packed up and left Fancy Gap at 9:30 a.m. The weather (finally) was clear with blue skies.  It was a long drive.  We stopped at a humongous truck stop.  They had 500 parking spaces for trucks with a truck wash, medical testing for drugs, a clinic, a steak place, a fast food eatery, and fuel station.  We just parked to use the bathroom and walk the dog and then were on our way.  We arrived at the campground at 1 p.m.
This is a KOA.  It is a large campground spread out over low hills with lots of grass and trees.  It is very pretty to look at.  There is a river and waterfalls at the back of the park. They rent tubes for campers to float on the river.  There are lots of things to do – a large pool, four hot tubs (currently closed), pool tables, a video arcade, horseshoe pits, etc.  We have a 30-amp and water hookup but no sewer.  The bathrooms are pretty far away.  There are rabbits everywhere!  They even have signs us warning not to pick up or chase the rabbits and they sell food to feed them.      The cell phone signal in this campground is the pits!  I can’t post on Facebook and it is difficult to research anything on the internet.  This will be a tough week since we have to start coordinating with the various campgrounds and venues for the caravan.
We spent the afternoon and evening working on the travel guide.  Things are starting to come together nicely.
2021 Jun 14 (Mon) – We took a ride into town for lunch at the Gap Deli.  The food was pretty good.  Afterward, we drove around the area for a bit.  This a beautiful area.  Lots of greenery and well built homes.
2021 Jun 13 (Sun) – We stayed in the campground today, working on the paperwork for the caravan.  We did the laundry and bought dinner from the office.  The smoker was going all day and the smell was very appealing.
2021 Jun 12 (Sat) – We took a break and went for a drive, stopping at 13 Bones for lunch.  The ribs were not that good yet the place was packed.  We figured it must be something pertinent to this region.  We also stopped at WalMart to do some shopping. Returned home in the worst rainstorm. Ugh.  Thunderstorms rolled through and poor Sheba spent the day hiding in the closet.
2021 Jun 11 (Fri) – We stayed in the campground all day working on the documents for the caravan.  Our tail gunner had put together maps but we couldn’t get the program he used to mesh with the program we are using to create the Travel Guide.  Paul wound up having to recreate all the maps.  Ugh.  What a waste of effort!
We had lunch and dinner at the KOA BBQ office.  We met a couple parked to us from NC.  We had a very interesting conversation until our dinner was delivered.  Ray asked for information about SMART.  Paul gave him a magazine.  We would have given him a brochure but it got rained on the other day and we lost all the brochures we had sitting out for people to take.  We will have to send for more.
2021 Jun 10 (Thu) – We went food shopping at the Food Lion today.  Before then, we stopped at Aunt Bea’s Dining Room for lunch.  It was a kind of cafeteria.  You picked your food from a variety of items on a hot table, then sat at a table in the dining room.  It was ok.
2021 Jun 9 (Wed) – We took a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway today.  There are so many lush, green trees in this state.  We stopped at the Mabry Mill, an historic Appalachian homestead on the parkway.  It had a mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and other artifacts.  A ranger was working in a shed on a weaving loom.  She explained the process to us and showed examples of her work.  It was an interesting stop.  Also along the Blue Ridge Parkway was a rail fence exhibit that showed several different types of fence made by wooden posts and poles.
Tumblr media
We stopped at a winery in Floyd.  You could only have a tasting if you were fully vaccinated.  Since I am not vaccinated, we sat out on the patio and had a glass of wine with bread, cheese, meats, and fruits.  Neither of us enjoyed the wine but the experience was nice.  It rained pretty hard most of the day.
The program for the Max Air Fan in the kitchen arrived.  Unexpectedly, it worked!  The fan is now in action again.  How wonderful!
2021 Jun 8 (Tue) – Well, I am back from New York. It was a long 3 weeks.  I had originally planned to help out my sister, Susan, after knee surgery but she changed her mind and cancelled the surgery.  My plans were already made so I left them alone.  I stayed at her house and borrowed her Tesla during my stay.  That is quite a car!  Great for a speed demon like my sister.
I had a PET scan at Memorial Sloan Kettering.  The results were spectacular!  There were no metabolically active lymph nodes.  Unfortunately, my oncologist moved to Texas and a new doctor was assigned to me but could not fit me into her schedule.  I will see her at my next appointment.  I asked the nurse if I could stop the chemotherapy but she said to continue as usual until I talk with the doctor.
I also saw the cardiologist.  He ordered a stress test which I passed with flying colors.
I got to visit with my brother, Chris, and brother and girlfriend, Dennis & Denise, over the holiday weekend.  I took my grandson, Caiden, out a few times and visited with my daughter and husband, Lilah & Kenny.  I also stopped over my Cousin Claude’s house and visited with him and his daughter, Kathy.  I also caught up with our friend, Jan, who happened to be outside in her garden when I drove by.  She had knee surgery and is recovering nicely.  And I got to have dinner with my daughter, Gina.
Susan volunteers at a wildlife rescue center and I was able to go with her twice.  That place was overrun with raccoons, squirrels, and ducklings.  Wow!  There were many other types of animals and birds there as well.  Susan’s daughter, Sharon, flew home for a few days and we went into the city for a day.  Sharon has ongoing dental treatments at a specialist in New York City.  Except for less people and cars, everything looked the same.
My flight home was disrupted by thunderstorms and I wound up spending a night at a hotel in Baltimore.  But I ultimately made it home to my honey.  While I was gone, Paul got the Spyder Control program fixed and we are back on the road!  We were afraid that we would have to cancel the caravan if we didn’t get the problem resolved.  Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

June 2nd, 2017 - Strasbourg, France & Worms, Germany
Hello there everyone! Today is Trent and Carolyn’s last day in Europe. Tomorrow they will be flying home. We’ve had a great time, but we can tell they are a little anxious to get back home - if for no other reason than to get to sleep in their own bed and hug their kids. For now, that will have to wait, because today we are heading to France. We will make a quick detour to the small town of Worms, where Trent and I both lived in 1969 & 1970. That was 47 years ago, and the town of Worms is not so little anymore. Trent was only 5 years old when we lived here and I was 14 so our memories are a little sketchy, but we wanted to come back and see where we used to live.
The drive to Worms from where we are staying near Darmstadt is about 45 minutes - mainly because of morning traffic and the fact that they seem to be working on so many of the roads around here. The drive into Worms is as impressive as I remember it. You have to cross over the Rhine River on a bridge and pass through the impressive stone towers that once protected the small town of Worms. The bridge looks much bigger and newer than I remember, but the stone tower is still the same. We decide to head over to the St. Peter’s Dome and Cathedral so we can learn about Martin Luther and the famous Diet of Worms. The Cathedral is now surrounded by buildings and shops. My memories of it are that it was very visible from the town center & Rathaus, but now the cathedral is largely obscured by other buildings. all you can see are the spires soaring above the buildings. We see the Trinity Church that stands on the sight were it is believed that Luther posted the tenants of his Diet - (a Diet was a tribunal and not a weight loss program). Martin Luther came to Worms to express his beliefs about the need for reformation of the church in the 1500 because Worms was a Free Imperial City, meaning that it reported to and was to some extend governed directly by the Holy Roman Empire.
Martin Luther believed that the religious hierarchy of the time had become corrupt and more concerned about raising funds and controlling the peoples relationship with God. Luther espoused the belief that man could have a personal relationship with God and man should be able to have, read and interpret the Bible directly, rather than having it spoon fed to them by the church. After convening the Diet to discuss his beliefs, Martin Luther was declared to be a heretic and Church Elders wanted him taken into custody. However, Luther’s ideas struck a chord with the people of Worms and with other noblemen of the time. One of whom actually came to Luther’s rescue and gave him refuge in his castle. Although Luther only spent 10 days in Worms, his teachings took root and set in motion a Protestant Reformation of the Church. All of that happen right here in Worms.
While we are walking the streets, Elisa happened upon a dress shop and decided to look for a dress for Krista’s upcoming wedding. Now mind you, she has already purchase a dress for the wedding, but now she is having second thoughts about it. So what better thing to do than to shop for a dress while we are on a quick side trip to Worms. Guess what, she finds one she likes - at least for now - so she decides to buy it from a little shop where we will never be able return it if she should change her mind. In any event - she is happy - so I am happy.
After the dress purchase, we get back into the car for our 2 hour drive to Strasbourg, France. We have chosen to come to this particular city in France because both Trent and I remember coming here with our parents when we lived in Germany all those years ago. We remember how quaint and lovely the old city was. It has some of the best restored and preserved gothic architecture in Europe. In particularly, what we remember is having lunch at the Maison Kammerzell, or as the German’s call it - Kammerzell Haus. This restaurant is located in a building that was first build in 1427 as a Civil building. It was renovated in the 1460’s and again in the 1500’s, but it is largely unchanged since then. The building has been occupied by a hotel and restaurant since the 1600’s. When we came here in the 1960’s It was arranged a bit differently. The building is a 5 story structure, and what we remember is that the first floor had a large bar and informal seating and dining along with outdoor dining. The next three levels of the restaurant were dedicated to fine dining with the menu and quality of the food and service increasing the higher one went in the restaurant. The kitchen would occupy the 5th and top floor with prepared meals being delivered by a food elevator system. Today it is a bit different. the large bar on the first level is no longer there. It is a more informal dining room and the outdoor seating remains. The menu is the same regardless of where one sits. The next 3 floors are more finely appointed dining stations with a bit more service staff, but there aren’t any difference between the three upper floors and the menu is the same for all parts of the restaurant. The restaurant has occupied a prominent place on the Cathedral square. In fact, the building that the restaurant sits in was there before construction of the current cathedral was completed. Today, there are streets with trendy shops that now lead into the square where the Cathedral and the restaurant now sit. It is really breathtaking when you come around the corner and are confronted with both the cathedral and the Maison Kammerzell building.
We enter the restaurant for lunch and we will be dining one level above the street entrance. Our waiter directs us to our roomy corner table that has a great view, albeit through wavy glass that is original to the renovation in the 1600s. We are having a late lunch so we are all a bit hungry.
For Starters we each place an order. Elisa opts for the smoked salmon with a cheese garnish. The salmon is and excellently prepared and served with a delicious cheese sauce and caper berries. Carolyn, has the cold soup of watermelon and melon. She is really thrilled with and finds it refreshing on this warm day. Trent has the Onion Pie - which is like a quiche - Carolyn takes a taste and describes it as follows, “if you could take a serving of classic French onion soup and put it into a quiche, this is what you would get. We all try it and it is very special. I have the snails in classic butter, garlic and herbs. They too are wonderful.
For our main course: Carolyn has the beef filet served with gratin potatoes, a vegetable soufflé and hollandaise sauce with her steak that has been perfectly grilled. Elisa has the beef tenderloin. It too is perfectly cooked and seasoned, but she wishes she had some of the hollandaise sauce to go with it - so Carolyn shares. Both Trent and I have the lamb chops that are served with a array of vegetables, a wonderful brown sauce, and a crostini that is covered with an olive tapenade that to our surprise complements the lamb quite nicely. We also split a bottle of French Medoc that is wonderful.
For desert: Carolyn has a pistachio mousse with red plum ice cream and merengue, I have a chestnut ice cream with blueberries, whipped cream and merengue cookies. Trent has a trio of sorbet (lemon, red plum and peach) they are then drenched with brandy. Once again his favorite is the lemon. Both Carolyn and I love our deserts. The meal was as good as we remember from 47 years ago and we are happy we came.
After our late lunch we are walking the town and making a few small purchases here and there. Carolyn is thinking that she might need another piece of luggage to carry home some of the treasures she has acquired along the way. However, Elisa suggest that Carolyn use her suitcase to carry home her items and Elisa will purchase a new one. One of the wheels on Elisa’s suitcase is getting a little wobbly and she would prefer a 4-wheeled roller. I’m ok with the idea, but I’m guessing that in this part of town we will have difficulty finding a luggage store. On top of that she has her eye on a Samsonite model similar to the Moby suitcase Carolyn has. I’ve spent a lot of time in France for work and my recollection is that they somewhat eschew American brands and prefer to focus on or only carry French brands such as Delsy. So I tell her we probably won’t get her a Samsonite. We look in a lot of stores and don’t see any luggage. I suggest we give up when the only store we can find that carries any sort of luggage is a Louis Vuitton store, and I’m not interested in spending that kind of money. It’s now coming up on about 5:30pm and we have a 2+ hour drive back so we decide to give up on the suitcase. Since Carolyn and Trent are flying tomorrow and we will be here for another 3 days, Elisa tells her to go ahead and take her suitcase as an extra. Carolyn says no - worried that we will be busy and not find one, or that the search for a suitcase will get in the way of our remaining days of vacation. We turn the corner to head back where our car is parked and walk smack into a luggage store. We have had that kind of luck on this trip. If you’ve read my very first post you may recall that Trent almost didn’t make the trip because of a ticketing snafu that resulted when he arranged is ticket using a shortened name than appears on his passport. The night before we left he was on the phone with a customer service agent named Minerva - who miraculously got things squared away. We deemed at that point that Minerva, the goddess of hope has blessed us on our entire trip. We weather has been great, whenever rain has been in the forecast, we have dodged it, whenever we were searching for a parking space we find one at the last second. Now, Minerva has struck once again, for not only did we stumble into a luggage store in France, this one carries Samsonite and they are having a sale. To our surprise, the price of the suitcase is very comparable to home. The other thing that Minerva has blessed us with is that the store is very close to where we parked our car.
With our Strasbourg mission now complete, we are on the road to head back to our temporary home. Trent takes a turn at driving and when we are about 45 minutes out of time, he declares that he is in need of a bathroom break. We drive along and do not see any signs for upcoming service stations. By now, Trent has been talking about needing to go to the restroom so much, that now we all feel the need. Even though we have enough gas to make the trip home, we are now in search of a gas station. After another 10 minutes of driving on the autobahn without seeing signs for service, we decide to exit the autobahn at a small town, thinking we will definitely find a gas station near the autobahn. Guess what, no gas station. We now pull over and query our navigation and find a service station located a couple of miles away. We finally find it but not without making a couple of wrong turns along the way. We are all roaming around the service station - inside and outside - looking for the much needed restroom. I finally go inside and ask the owner, a nicely dressed German woman if she has a restroom here. She replies with a very disappointing, "Nein". With our luck we happen to find the only service station that doesn’t have a restroom. The disappointment on our faces must have been obvious because she points us toward a large supermarket a little down the street. We head on over there thinking at last. We pull up to this very nice and modern grocery store, probably the largest and best stocked one we have seen since we started our trip over 3 weeks ago. Here we are roaming around this store, wishing we hadn't purchased groceries at the store in town, since this one is so much better stocked. We then remember, we are on a mission to find a restroom. I ask a stock clerk and he, tells me in German that it is outside near the Getrenken Automat - this is the automated machine for redeeming empty drink bottles. We find the restroom - finally - but it is locked. Elisa asks the checkout clerk and she tells us it is closed for repair. By now, we are all getting a little desperate. So I google McDonald’s since we’ve seen a number of them here in Germany. We are in luck - there is one only 3 miles away. We rush over there and we are all pleased to find well equipped and clean restrooms. Now that we are all relieved, we feel obligated to order something. Not that any of us is hungry after our gourmet French meal, but a "cheeseburger chaser” is the capper for our French dining experience.
I drive us the rest of the way back into Darmstadt and we arrive by 8:20pm. We are all relaxing and there are not thoughts of eating in any or our heads - except for Elisa. She is the only one that did not feel compelled to order something from the McDonald’s that was our oasis in a desert sans restrooms.
Elisa has now emptied her old suitcase, transferring her thing into her new and swanky Samsonite - roller bag. It is not “Moby” sized, thank goodness, but the same size as the one she had. She shouldn’t have any trouble packing all of her things. Trent and Carolyn now have plenty of room to take their goodies home with them. As they pack and take their showers, Elisa and I realize that we will miss them as we spend the next 3 days here in Germany on our own. They have been great traveling companions and together we have ventured out and done so much.
Tomorrow we will drop them off at Frankfurt airport - one of the largest in the world. It will serve as a dry run for us when we need to travel home. We will have a rental car to return and luggage to handle, so we will scope thing out as we drop them off tomorrow. With that in mind, it dawns on us that our trip too is about to come to an end.
More later on our final days.
Aufwiedersehen!

Real Housewives Of Atlanta Season 11 Premiere Recap
Last night’s season premiere of Real Housewives of Atlanta was all about Porsha Williams turning right instead of left and finding Prince Charming – aka The Hot Dog King Of Atlanta, and hopefully getting a big ol diamond ring out of it. HINT, MEGA-HINT, HINT.
As we alll know Porsha is dating Dennis, who owns several clubs in addition to The Original Hotdog Factory. “Everybody loves hot dogs!” Porsha cheers, “Especially me!” And Dennis’s wienie in particular. Porsha met Dennis at one of his clubs, then went home with him. Porsha and Dennis’s one-night stand has now turned into ring shopping. He apparently told her he loved her the first night they met. “It just feels natural and we just went with it,” she gushes.
Porsha drags Dennis to her jeweler – the same one who provided her rings to Kordell, because, “Different man, different right, right?!” And bigger girl, bigger diamonds too! She’s a grown up now, no more playing housewives with a man who acts like her father. Also, it’s not like the jeweler cursed their marriage – RHOA did.
After diamond browsing, Porsha swings by Swagg Boutique to check in on NeNe Leakes. And NeNe is not doing well. Gregg has been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer – which I didn’t know his cancer was so advanced! – and most of his colon was removed. NeNe is taking care of him, and trying to be strong, but in her car and at night she cries. Gregg is determined to fight – if only to have more time with his wife – so they host a revitalizing prayer circle of family and friends to boost his spirit and keep him strong.  NeNe gets Porsha for her spirit boosting! Gregg looks so ill and depleted, I am heartbroken for this family. And alas I just cannot make fun of NeNe’s confessional hat at a time like this. So she gets a pass, because of Gregg.
Porsha came to Swagg because she just had to see NeNe’s face to truly understand where she is. They speak on the phone regularly, but Porsha knows NeNe is hiding her true feelings and has decided to make it her sole mission (other than getting a ring) to make NeNe laugh to cheer her up. And Porsha, bless her heart, she is ride or die about shaking her booty for a friend in need.
Dennis is taking Porsha to Miami to celebrate her birthday and guess what – NeNe is also headed there for a comedy gig. NeNe somehow talks Porsha into trying on this tie-dyed two-piece number which looked like a Crayola box exploded on Porsha’s ass, or maybe like one of those Jackson Pollak paintings that sell for millions.
NeNe wants to see what’s cooking with Porsha and her Swagg outfit. The answer is stir-fried crazy. Crazier than a tye-dyed spandex outfit.
What’s also cooking is that Porsha has a brilliant idea. Well, at least for her it’s brilliant. She – ahem, the producers – decide this is the perfect opportunity for Porsha to plan a girl’s trip to surprise NeNe in Miami to cheer her up. Yes, I’m so sure Porsha came up with this all on her own. Just like I’m so sure Porsha and NeNe just so happened to be traveling to Miami at the exact same time…
Next, let’s check in on Cynthia Bailey. Fifty Cynt turned out to be a bad year, but Fifty Cynt & Change is doing OK. Cynthia is now dating – and quite serious with – Mike Hill, a sportscaster who lives in LA, but visits Lake Bailey regularly to dive into its cool, swampy waters. Mike calls for some Skype-Sex and Cynthia is all prepared with a glass of wine swimming with frozen green grapes so it looks like she’s drinking a witch’s brew filled with eyeballs. Then in the middle of Mike telling her how he likes to be in control, Noelle walks in unannounced. Noelle and Mike have met, and like each other – so much so that Mike and Cynthia almost continue their raunchy talk while she’s sitting on the sofa taking a selfie. Classy!
For Kandi Burrrus her personal life is problematic while her professional one is hitting the highest notes ever. Starting with Xscape being honored with an aascap Golden Note Award. The award is all fine and good, but the really important matter for these Ol Girls of the 90’s music scene is what craft services will be serving backstage. Um, aascap isn’t using OLG as their caterers? Aunt Bertha won’t be personally presiding over the koolaid kocktails while terrorizing the other esteemed attendees? Apparently not because it doesn’t even appear that Mama Joyce attended.
Instead, Kandi brought her toddler and Riley, neither of whom want to be there. Kandi is shocked that Ace is cranky and crying – she doesn’t even seem to realize what time he goes to bed. Probably because, as Riley points out, Kandi is constantly working and never home. Todd is essentially running “Daddy Daycare,” but while he’s at the bar getting a much needed drink after finally escaping the kids, Don Jaun Daycare had to take over while Kandi grimaced from the red carpet. Girl time to hire a NANNY.
We also need to take a moment to truly honor the star of that show: Kandi’s weave. It must have been supplied by Porsha’s Go Naked Hair!
Of course, while Kandi is missing school meetings she forgot were even scheduled (OK I’ve done that too) and being publicly called out by her teenager for ignoring home responsibilities, she’s contemplating another baby because duh – she has two frozen embryos left which she’s not sure what to do with. Yes – another stupid embryo storyline! Really Bravo… you have got to cook up some new recipes. Let Porsha get into that kitchen and open the oven and stuff a hotdog bun in there or something.
Eva Marcille had Michael Jr, and is now engaged to regular-old Michael. Basically, everything is great except that her wedding is in about 6 minutes but she has no wedding planner or anything else done. However, she does have professional family photographs with everyone wearing denim-on-denim like this is 1992. So priorities. After taking a couple photos with the kids, Eva quickly shoos them away, kicks off her Louboutins and turns this into The Eva Show to relaunch her modeling career. Does ANTM do a senior series? Wasn’t LeeAnne Locken on something like that way back when?
Porsha comes home carrying a Chick-Fil-A cup the size of her head and announces that she’s going to call all the girls to invite them to Miami on a mission trip to recharge NeNe’s batteries. She’s scared though because she’s well aware that none of her s0-called friends even like her! She starts with Cynthia, who is too busy sucking on frozen grapes to be mean and having nothing to do, is an easy yes. Next Porsha downs a shot of Hennessy to give Kandi a call. Kandi was just telling us how much she loves to work, so she had no problem jetting off to Miami at a moment’s notice and ditching her kids (again) to fulfill her Bravo contractual obligations. Everyone else, obviously, can go because these trips are sooo authentic!
Porsha pats herself on the back for being brave enough to work the telephone and surprisingly everyone was nice. Even Kandi. Good things happen when you project your happiness to the world in the form of constant hair flips and high pitched shrieking giggles. Porsha in love is worse than five 8th grader girls.
Porsha prepared for Miami by packing all white, because she’s having a very bridal moment – hopefully – and then adding a bring red wig to signify love. Also red is the color of ketchup – which pairs perfectly with hot dogs! I assume Porsha is no longer vegan? If Dennis doesn’t propose in the next 5 minutes she’s gonna explode like a hotdog cooked too long in the microwave! When he arrives to pick her up and fly her in a private plane, Porsha is literally bursting with glee and practically levitating at the thought of being proposed to during the trip. Did I mention that they’ve only been together five months?
Meanwhile, NeNe is calling Cynthia hourly to beg her to come to Miami where she’ll be doing her first comedy show since Gregg’s diagnosis. Cynthia is the worst liar ever and stumbles over pretending she has to get off the phone for conference calls and phone sex and any other reason, oh my! Then she’s so flustered she packs the wardrobe equivalent of Porsha’s personality.
Driving to their hotel, Porsha prattles on about how she has so much to do in Miami like wear WHITE. A LOT. And make NeNe feel better by showing off her GIANT ENGAGEMENT RING, but there are no plans to introduce Dennis to the girls. Porsha wants to protect him from them eating him alive. Dennis actually already knows Kandi… from around. No details given. Also, he used to frequent OLG Restaurant on the regular, being that he lives right across the street, but since meeting Porsha he hasn’t partaken in their fried chicken. Hmmm… so do we think Dennis is a famewhore? Or something else? Porsha is choosing to remain unbothered by this revelation because she is much more focused on the fact that Dennis could be proposing this weekend. HINT HINT.
Dennis has the room all prepared with a private chef to make gourmet food, and WHITE (hint hint!) rose petals on the bed and we all know what white rose petals mean… THERE IS A RING HIDING IN PORSHA’S SALMON STEAK. Like a bad sitcom, Porsha runs into the bathroom to frantically call her sister, whispering about how she knows this is the night. She’s in there so long Dennis finally asks if everything is OK. Cause nothing says sexy like your man thinking you have explosive diarrhea!
Finally, Porsha sits down on the bed and Dennis whips out a giant jewelry box and … TO BE CONTINUED.
Also, of course, Dennis knows Kandi. And of course, Kandi will know something nasty about him.
TELL US – DO YOU THINK DENNIS WILL PROPOSE? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CYNTHIA’S MAN? ARE YOU EXCITED EVA HAS JOINED THE CAST FULL-TIME?

Grillmasters And Amateurs Prefer A Weber Bbq For Its Durability
The one thing about warmer weather is that most people look forward to is outdoor grilling. Anyone who has been curious about cooking over an open fire may not know where to start, as there are many brands from which to choose. Like anything else, choosing reputation over price pays off in the long run. People to start with a Weber bbq grill that is compact in size and can travel anywhere.
Fortunately, this size is available in charcoal and propane gas models and making a choice may depend on user circumstances. While some people say the difference is in the taste, some may disagree. However, those who live in smaller spaces may benefit from using a gas grill, as the cleanup is minimal compared to charcoal. These grills also take less time to heat up.
For those who love the hanging out in warm weather, the char taste that results from cooking over an open fire, and does not mind the heating or cleaning process, get those briquets fired up. While extras like flavored wood chips can be used with either, smaller sizes are best for learning about cooking time for unprocessed meats. As charcoal can be unpredictable and usually calls for a careful eye throughout, this is why some break out the cold drinks and some entertainment.
Tumblr media
Once a person has figured out cooking times and heat control, this is the perfect time for experimentation. Although some are satisfied with a simple sear and mild hickory flavor with a little sauce on the side, others like to up the ante. There are many recipes that break some of the rules but accommodate varying taste buds.
Dry and wet rubs are growing in popularity and some may even say these can replace most sauces not made from scratch. A rub is normally thicker than consistency than a seasoning blend or marinade but works best in dense meats like beef, pork, and some poultry. A whole salmon or steaks is probably the only fish that would benefit from a rub since it has a thicker texture than most fish.
As some like to cut the fat from their entree, more people are not only cooking with turkey but meat alternatives. Turkey, whether cooked whole or in ground form, benefits from a rub with a little oil since it helps seal in the natural juices. Mock versions of chicken and sausage made from firm tofu can also be cooked over an open fire.
In recent, people have also found ways to make side dishes and desserts on the grill. This is no longer limited to the standard corn on the cob or barbecue beans but cruciferous vegetables and dense fruits can either stand alone or act as part of an entree. One burger type that is growing in popularity is the portobello mushroom. Instead of chopping it into small pieces as the garnish, placing a whole or half on the grill for a few minutes on one side is one of the healthiest hacks around.
Once a person becomes more comfortable with their grilling skills, getting a larger grill is usually the protocol. Different sections have varied heating levels and the user can make many food items at once. Because this is a fun and healthy way to cook, a lot of people do not mind the cleanup.

Friday May 22 09:34 mid flight Syd to Mel
Very busy prior to today getting things done and Anne with her business and uni work. Bed last night at 23:00 finished packing. Up at 05:45 and had lots to do before leaving the house at 07:00 15 minutes behind schedule. Drove to Liana who drove us to the airport. Plane delayed about 40 minutes due Melbourne weather. Another scissors confiscated but no fluids nor toothpaste this time. ETA Mel. about 10:15. Jetstar A321 a little squashy but only for 1 hour.
14:35 downtown Melbourne
Hotel across the road from the airport just a short walk. Btw Jetstar took carry on luggage down to the cargo bay and we were lucky not to be charged. We are at the hotel today and leave for Hong Kong tomorrow at 07:25. How convenient just a walk across the road from the hotel.
We caught the sky bus into town. Walked around had lunch, window shopped. Free tram from Spencer St outlet mall to Bourke Street. Currently having another coffee, to wake up and kill time. The chocolate and cake shops are very tempting but we are resisting, not sure about resistance on the cruise in a week or so. It's quite cool here in Melbourne and the jacket I brought may not quite cut the mustard so we bought a jumper from an outlet shop. Coffee at Myers.
Dinner was at Triim a Mediterranean restaurant in Hardware lane. Read my review on trip adviser (anneroy contributor). Free tram back to Spencer St interchange. Then skybus back to Park Royal airport. Watching Eurovision. Tomorrow flight to Hong Kong departs 07:40. Wake up call at 05:00
Sat May 23 07:35
Email during the night to say flight delayed so we slept till 6. Dressed, packed, checked out and walked to airport. Currently having breakfast.
Sun May 24 16:25
Comfortable seat that lies flat, daytime flight so movies. Interstellar and John Wick. Too much food. Smooth flight only a couple of times to fasten seat belt. Installed SIM card into my phone. Arrived Hong Kong delayed docking due weather. Lucky flight was not diverted to Malaysia or China due weather. Easy quick transit though arrivals. MTR train to Kowloon HK$140 then free airport shuttle to Salisbury YMCA hotel. All too easy. Upgrade to view of harbour. Dropped bags in room then walked to Marianne jeweller. Most shops closed so back to hotel, fruit in our room for dinner and early night. Up early, bought coffee downstairs and took back to room. Fruit for breakfast. Walked 1st to tailor chose material and measured up for suit. Last time 2010 and 5 centimetres thinner now. Then to Jeweller Marianne, then a haircut and shave. Lunch across the road. Anne bought watch and hand bag. Currently Coffee in hotel cafe. Plan to catch airport shuttle at 20:30 across the road. So 4 hours to kill. I bought an "S" SIM card for iPad from honest Ali ( turned out to be a dud) in shop in arcade. Let's see if it works for 4 weeks.
23:15 Emirates lounge
Plane leaves 12:30 just past midnight so we are filling in time sitting in hotel foyer. Airport shuttle leaves every 12 minutes to Kowloon. Anne read book I walked thru hotel next to YMCA. Shops are all classy expensive like Prada Louis Vuitton and other names I've never heard of but Talia would know. And watch brands that are probably ridiculously pricey.
Decided we might as well suffer at the airport so caught early shuttle to Kowloon. Rather quick trip without traffic. Well surprise surprise, at the train station, Kowloon, you can check in your luggage. Then you board the train to the airport luggage free. The airport is something else, the size of a small city. A shuttle train takes you to the appropriate gate and lounge because it is so far away. So we ate lots, charged up the phone and iPad and now wait patiently for another 30 minutes to board the plane to Dubai.
Mon 25 12:15 pm
Amazing Emirates A380 flight to Dubai, overnight flight so we missed out on enjoying everything Emirates has to offer. Arrived early Dubai about 04:00. Easy transit thru customs, immigration. Chauffeur driven to Regent Palace hotel. Arrived hotel about 05:00 far too early to check in lovely hotel front of house Essi now Facebook friend, so we paid extra ¥200 for the luxury of a room. Had a snooze. At about 09:30 went across road to shopping centre including French supermarket Carrefour. Lunch at Dome. Bought fruit to fill in before dinner. It's very hot probably about 40 Celsius.not many burqas several men in traditional gear. Swishy shops in shopping centre. Weighed myself with clothes and shoes so possibly 1kg extra weight. Gotta be careful.
17:40
Waiting till 19:00 to be picked up for cruise dinner and dance performance. Rosemary and Garry arrived from Sydney. I checked out the trains just next to the hotel and they come often.
Tuesday May 26 21:36 in our hotel room
Dinner cruise was interesting. Mostly Indian passengers and a few locals including women completely covered in black. Magician and Egyptian dancer. Indian cuisine buffet. B- evening but something to do in the evening. A good nights sleep and breakfast at 09:00. At last a hotel breakfast that is different albeit an Indian cuisine. Off to Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa tall tower. The mall is awe inspiring in its size. The train trip to it was easy and efficient and the station located next to the hotel..well done Anne and Rosemary. Note that some carriages are women only, a friendly local explained to me I could be fined being in the wrong carriage.
At the destination 7 travelators to get you to the mall. We did the aquarium, had coffee then went up to level 124 of the tower in a super smooth elevator. Great view. Dinner at Wafi gourmet, somewhat expensive but quite good. Enjoyed the water show then train back to hotel.
12:25 old Souk Dubai Eating at Masti
Hotel Breakfast at 09:00. Taxi to Old Souk but he got it wrong and took us to old Gold Souk. Eventually went to the right place. Walked around the market mostly clothes, materials and trinkets. Very hot and dry. Bought a white Arabic garment plus keffiyeh. Pestered by hawkers.
Lunch at small cafe Masti. AED¥75 (2.7) Biryani chicken and fish plus fruit juices. Call to prayer loud and clear from several mosques.
Thursday23:30 Southampton Mercure hotel
After our shopping trip to the Souk we returned to hotel by taxi. Picked up at 16:00 for our desert safari. Our guide Botiri. Driven to the desert where we swapped to a Land Rover vintage model and given goggles and kaffiyeh.. A drive over the sand dunes looking for animals oryx, antelope like mammal. Refreshments sweet Apple juice and a falcon demonstration during which the sun set. A drive to dinner in the desert with entertainment, rifle dance and Arab lady dance. Lentil soup, rice, chicken kebabs, camel stew, dates, coffee, sweet drink mezze dips and bread. I lay on the cushions and fell asleep. Returned to the hotel by 22:30
Thursday morning vip taxi (lexus) to miracle garden. A 35 minute trip. Gardens were lovely. We waited for taxi to return us to the hotel 10:15 patiently which eventually arrived so we would make it on time back to the hotel. Picked up at 12:00 by Emerites and driven to airport. Boarded at about 14:30. 7 hour flight to Gatwick England. Emirates drove us to Southampton Mercure hotel where we are now.
May 31 sailing from Southampton to Denmark 05:48
A small room in the hotel but conveniently located. Met up with the other two families. I woke up early and walked up to the shops. After breakfast drove to Portsmouth dockyard and toured it. Took lots of photos. Light Lunch potato and cheese in a pub and had a pint. Met up with Chris and Diane in the street. Local restaurant fully booked so we ate at the hotel which was quite good. Saturday June 30 had early breakfast with Chris and Diane. Invited them to Talia's wedding (I know Diane will read this) Sadly said farewell then we drove to Highcliffe Northern Forest. Returned to hotel via the ship Celebrity Eclipse then finished packing. Checked out of hotel dropped off bags, Anne and I embarked at about 13:00 after about an hour line up. The ship is amazing. It just had a refit a month ago. Cabin spacious. Buffet level 15 very yummy. Dinner in restaurant very delicious. Prior to that we went to forward Skye lounge for drinks, part of our unlimited drink package. After the dinner went to the show, a very funny comedian. Bed early. Couldn't resist room service chicken soup at about 22:00.
12:00 noon may 31
Up early. Gym for 30 minutes 300 calories. Breakfast at Ocean View Cafe level 15. Yummy smoked salmon and herring. Spa level 12. Trivia sky lounge level 15. A,R,G playing cards.

Lunch in dining room. Dinner yummy as usual. Singer evening show very good lady.
Monday gym, smoked salmon and herring breakfast. Spa with Anne, Denmark talk. How to cook a steak demo. Lunch in ocean view cafe. Arrived Denmark 15:00. Taxi to canal boat ride, which was excellent. Tour guide Kiya. Met Karina and had coffee and talked a lot. It was just great meeting her after 16 years. Anne had 5 herring sampler. Taxi back to ship. Dinner in Ocean View. + wine( part of drink package). A,r,g cards in our cabin. Show at 21:30 very good singer Ben 3rd place X factor, sounds like rod steward. Coffee and iced tea in cafe bed at 12:30.
Wed June 3 10:00 in cabin
Yesterday taxis all booked up so took hop on hop off bus into town. Anne and I got off at department store like David Jones. Bought mascara for Liana then a Danish with coffee ( not called Danish here). Walked to "3" shop and along the way bought clothes at H.M. At "3" shop they got internet working on iPad and spent a short while skyping the girls.
Returned to catch the bus and the first one did not stop. Fortunately second one did stop because we have no Danish Kroners left for taxi fare. Back to ship, lunch, afternoon sleep, dinner at 6:30 then excellent show, circus, lucky to find a seat. After show my iced pear ginger tea. Watched rest of movie in cabin whirlwind or whirlpool.
Up at 07:30 and gym for 30 minutes. Then Oceanview cafe for smoked salmon, herring and toast with OJ and coffee. Returned to cabin with fruit for Anne then spa with Anne level 12.

Thursday May 25
Arrived Stockholm. Gym for 30 minutes and met everyone for breakfast. My weight ok but I think the scales are wrong. Taxi to Vasa museum (fitted 8 into a 7 seater) ended up doing Abba not Vasa. Skyped the girls in Abba museum. Abba interesting but needs a lick of paint. Ferry across harbour to old City. Walked around. I had my Swedish meat balls and beer. Anne had herring. Walked around then long walk back to ship. My phone says 12000 steps today. Returned to ship smoked salmon open sandwiches delicious and scones. Met chef yesterday and asked for buffalo wings. During dinner maitre de said buffalo wings tomorrow (Friday) show was impressionist, least entertaining so far. Early to bed everyone, all quite tired.
Friday May 26 clock forward 1 hour. Up at new time 04:30.
Saturday 20:30 St Petersberg.
Yesterday Stockholm. Shuttle bus into town. Lunch at restaurant. Fish soup and potato dish and Swedish beer. Bought a few nick nacks for kids and friends. Old city with history, small lanes and old buildings. Returned on shuttle bus. Dinner at 18:30 and magic show at 20:30 quite good. Everyone is quite exhausted so early to bed finished watching night stalker movie in cabin. Up early in St Petersburg.
A magnificent sickly opulent city with palaces decorated in over the top paintings, crockery and gold foil. On a tour. Had to pass through customs to get off ship past miserable government employees. Tour guide Lena, good English and very knowledgable. We were early so avoided huge crowds at various venues. We are a little disturbed that Russians do it tough while such lavish opulent churches and palaces. Part of the tour was a subway ride on a noisy train over one stop. The longest escalator I've ever experienced. We had lunch provided creamy soup and chicken crêpes. Garry and I had vodka. A lot of walking today 17000 steps according to my pedometer on the Samsung. We were agog at the size of the palaces as well as the fit out. The nazis more or less destroyed these places when they left and the Russian government restored them in record time. Much artwork was removed just before the nazis invaded. Much was stolen or destroyed. Back to the ship at about 18:00, dinner in dining room at about 19:00. Everyone is tired but we all want to see St Petersburg entertainment at 22:00 tonight. Early start tomorrow another 1/2 day tour with Lena and Peter.
Sunday 23:48
Early start 07:30. Easy thru immigration today. River cruise. Churches, palaces, lunch piroga (big piroshki) blood church, mosaics. Synagogue, hermitage museum. Farewell Elena and Peter our tour guide and driver. Dinner in Murano at discount thanks to Robert. Fantastic experience. Broadway show. Delay setting sail due 40knot wind.
Monday 21:00
Sea day sailing to Lithuania. Gym, new scales more accurate, I'm a little shocked at my weight. Excursion talk. Go pro talk (bought one). Chef demo how to cook fish. Lunch, sleep, dinner with Ruth and Stephen. MacDonald brothers show. Iced ginger pear tea. Anne did trivia.
Tuesday June 9 12:00 midnight
Arrived Lithuania. Gym, weight terrible. Walked thru town. Wi fi at cafe. Lunch back on ship. Trivia. Men vs women fun quiz. Ventriloquist show. Time running out for cruise.
Thursday June 11 08:35
Yesterday Poland. Taxi tour. French markets ate pistachio nugah. And apple donut. Church of many bricks. Church with lovely orang recital. Famous ant communist ---------- place.
Thursday arrived Germany. Gym, spa, breakfast.
Coach to Berlin 3 hours. Stopped at Maccas for toilet and coffee break. Toilet 50c. Swapped at 1936 Olympic stadium to group of 8 of us with excellent tour guide Lee an American who has been here for 30 years. All day tour of various places. Berlin Wall, railway station where Jews were loaded onto trains, square where books were burned. Various other places. Currently driving back to ship, a 3 hour trip. It's 20:00. Thursday evening.
Oops Sunday June 14
We arrived back at the ship at about 21:30 and dinner in the oceanview cafe bistro. A German feast including German sausages which chef Darren went on shore to buy , sauerkraut and German beer affordable on our drink packages. Ship departed at midnight.
Friday and Saturday sea days. Gym. Trivia, talks about confessions of a customs officer, and necrotourism. Other talks from officers, navigation and engineering. Shows were Beatles(yesterday evening, Chinese magician matinee yesterday and production show. All quite good. Four families met outside our cabins in team earth to discuss tips for crew. Rosie's trivia team earned various prizes including new lanyards, most appreciated. I walked around the ship and photographed most places with my new gopro. Obviously I've put on weight. We disembarked today (Sunday) at about 08:30. Phone call to taxi company. Taxis to Southampton airport. Little hiccups with Rosie's champagne and my bottle of wine but all sorted. Weigh was ok. Howard and my priority cards got us into business lounge. Free wifi so we spoke to the girls and caught up a little on the Internet and ate nibbles. Currently 22:05 on a Dash 8 at 28000 ft on track to Dublin.
Monday June 15 22:35
Yesterday arrived Dublin. Picked up car. Drove to Sandymount Hotel. Walked to local village. Asked Una Mollony a Dubllin resident directions and she ended up making two trips in her car to take us Moto dinner at the Old Spot where I had hamburger and Guinness.
Up Monday morning, hotel breakfast then caught hop on hop off bus to trinity college, then to town and shopping centre. Irish stew at cafe below museum the Hutch. Shopped then walked to Dublin castle to catch up with Rosie and Garry. Bus to Guiness storehouse for interesting tour then a pint of Guinness on level 7. Bus to stop 24 to dinner show, Gaelic music and dancing. Train home to the hotel.
During the day I got interviewed for a Father's Day show on Saorview.
Wednesday June 17 21:30 just arrived Sligo Park Hotel in Sligo
A summary of the last two days. Belfast :Titanic museum exhibition. We had a tour. It was terrific.a few levels of information, a chair lift taking you through a mock up ship yard. A cinema showing the remote camera view that surveyed the sunk ship. The drawing room. And lots of information. The Crumlin road Gaol, a morbid but interesting historical tour of this infamous place including the gallows. A show at the Old Opera theatre in Belfast. The Business of Murder. Slow at first but quite interesting second half. It had an 8 year run in the west end. Meals at various pubs and even a Chinese meal at the red panda opposite the Europa hotel. On the way to Sligo from Belfast today we stopped at the rope bridge Carrick-a-Rede. £5.90 and a mile long very difficult walk then a precarious walk over this shaky bridge. Hmm a lot of calories burned up today. A visit to the Bushmills distillery too late for a tour but not too late for a taste and to buy a bottle of honey single malt.
An historic black taxi tour if Belfast telling us about the history and the political problems faced by Ireland. Protestants are loyal to England Catholics are republicans. Some very sad stories of the struggle.
Saturday June 20
Left last drove to Sligo. Nice hotel for 1 night. In the morning a spa. Breakfast. Off to Galway. Dinner at an Italian restaurant. Looked through Dunnes department tour.
Currently travelling to Killarney. Cliffs of Mohr along the way but fogged in. Diverted by car ferry. Stopped for chowder and potato. Currently in Listowe having coffee. During this last two days we visited a castle in fact a fortified mansion. Today's road trip passed a bicycle rally.
Last night we stayed at a B&B Seashore lodge. Had to carry suit cases up the stairs. A good B&B but a poor hotel. Breakfast was basic. Coffee finished now 1 hour to finish our trip for today.
Sunday 10:30 June 21
Arrived Killarney yesterday via fogged in cliffs of Mohar and a ferry ride across a lake. Nice hotel Brooks. Great position near shops. Big room. OK breakfast. Here for two nights. Today we drove the ring of Kerry and enjoyed the scenery. Dinner both nights at Scala Eile and they gave us left over cakes to take away. Barbara from Poland the waitress my new Facebook friend and Maurice was the manager. Good value nice food great service. Had my sixth Guinness. Tomorrow early start to Cork.
Wed June 24
Taking off Dublin on route to London central airport. Just left Dunboyne castle hotel. A great hotel, great dinner here and good breakfast. Spa was €10 for the room and had steam rooms, sauna, spas of all sorts, relaxing rooms. I note that maintenance was lacking with multiple issues in several rooms.
Prior to that we were at the Ambassador hotel in Cork where we met Tommy and Anthony, Marian's father and brother. They picked up Anne and me from St Patrick's Street outside Brown and Thomas department store and took me for a Murphys at a local pub.then a Jamesons whisky. We had a cheap Chinese meal at a local (pity we missed out on a genuine not tourist meal).
Btw last night was my seventh Guinness.
Spa, nice dinner, and good breakfast here.
Friday June 26
Currently in Lancaster hotel London. Couple of days ago flew to London City airport. Gotta remember not to take liquids on plane! Fitted 8 of us plus baggage into taxi..a miracle. Hop on hop off bus. Thames cruise with the funniest tour guide ever! . Harrods ( crazy prices AUS$14 for coffee). Saw musical Beautiful last night excellent, in the audience Gene Simmons and Michael Cain. After Harrods walked through Hyde park back to hotel. Saw Princess Diana memorial fountain and squirrels.
Wednesday July 1
Have not written for a while so here's a catch up.
Back to London where Anne and I picked up the SIXT hire car with a little difficulty interpreting the gps. We caught a train then walked till we discovered it in a car park. It's a manual Citroen and had a challenge finding out how to start it and how to engage reverse. Then to negotiate London traffic, avoiding the congestion tax. We drove to the Lancaster hotel, farewelled Cheryl, Adam, and Howard and Shirley. Then off we drove to the Cotsolds and our lovely Roman period house at Bouton on the water. We stayed here for 3 nights during which we did road trips all around enjoying English countryside. We had cooking facilities so we cooked two dinners, 3 breakfasts and made lunch twice left over sausages on rolls with coleslaw. We shopped at Tesco a short distance from our house. the Cotwolds are a magic place with a creek running through it and old English charm and a lot of weekenders over Saturday and Sunday. We bought duck food and fed the ducks. Garry and I had a pint of Hobgoblin beer brewed locally and served at 12 Celsius. Restaurants close at 6 on Sunday so we were forced to eat Chinese. On the morning of our departure a police car pulled up as someone complained about where we parked.
We left the Cotwolds and drove the Staffords to Gatwick via Stratford upon Avon and Brompton where Downtown Abbey is and was being filmed. Behind schedule we tracked to Gatwick on the M25 my gps not working, turned out we ran out of data. I drove for about 7 hours this day. Traffic on the M25 was horrific for over 100 miles. A nightmare. Went under some bridge and paid the toll on line at Jeff's place. We planned to arrive at 5, we arrived after 6. We had planned to do dinner with the Simons at 7 ended up thee at 8:30 without gps and about 10 at Monica's place after that. And we tried to ring Sharon turned out we had the home number not mobile and ringing Jeff the phone cut out yep unbelievably stressful. Wi fi at the restaurant gave us a map to Jeff so Alls well that ends well. Stayed with Monica overnight after talking till midnight. Yummy breakfast. England has great berries and yoghurt. I had a short morning walk to the seaside. We went to Smileys for lunch on the seaside I had fish and chips. Then at about 11:45 set off to Heathrow early as I was scared of the traffic. As it turned out traffic was excellent and I cruised at 70 mph. At the airport we retrieved VAT and octopus credit then relaxed in the lounge until we realised our plane was at sector C a shuttle away.
11 hour flight passed quickly I think I slept a long time as I can't account for all these hours.
Arrived Hong Kong knew the train and shuttle protocol and here we are at the YMCA and the temperature is 35 Celsius.
July. 2 Thursday
Just filled in time on an hour harbour cruise.
Did recon this morning about our trip to Macau.
Went to jeweller and to polo bag shop.
Yesterday went to jeweller and tailor. Suit measured and will be posted to Australia. Ring ready for Talia and bought earrings for Liana.
Dinner in authentic Chinese restaurant around the corner. Checked out of hotel at 12 and they are storing our bags and facility for shower if we want.
