okay so can we talk about the fact that if jeff was alive, he would kick the fuck outta monty rn
You’re so right. And you know what? I’m gonna make him alive for a second so we can all imagine this.
(Tw for graphic depictions of violence below, also this contains spoilers and describes the scene in the bathroom with Monty and Tyler which I know could be upsetting for some people. Please read with caution and take care of yourselves!)
Monty and Jeff were always friends. It wasn’t that they were particularly close, but they played on the same team and had the highest respect for each other. And they hung out, at parties, at Bryce’s, in different people’s basements.
Jeff was not oblivious to the way the jocks bullied other kids. He never really participated, and he’d pulled Monty (and other jocks) off kids dozens of times. He was never confrontational. Jeff was calm and funny, and he had a certain nature that relaxed everyone around him. He was firm about his beliefs, but he never got into your face about them.
That was why it was so surprising when Jeff lost his shit. It literally never happened.
Monty never expected to be the one Jeff unleashed on. That was why, when Jeff walked into the bathroom one fateful afternoon, and Monty and his two friends were ganging up on Tyler, Monty half expected Jeff to join in.
Jeff glanced back and forth between Monty and Tyler, trying to assess the situation. Tyler was being jammed against the sink, the back of his head hitting the back of the mirror. “What’s going on?” Jeff asked, trying to keep his voice even. He’d been in this situation enough times to know that yelling or escalating the situation never helped.
Monty shoved Tyler against the mirror again. “Teaching this shit a lesson. He’s the fucking reason why our season got canceled. That can never happen again.”
It all happened very fast. One minute, Tyler was being pressed against the mirror, the next his face was being smashed against the sink. For a moment, Jeff completely froze in shock. There was blood everywhere. Tyler’s blood.
The two other guys helped as Monty shoved him into a stall. Tyler was gasping, begging, “I’m sorry! Listen, guys, I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry!” It was this that jolted Jeff to take action.
He pulled Monty away from the stall, roughly shoving him against the sink. “What the fuck, Atkins?”
Tyler grunted as one of the other guys hit him. “Get the fuck off him!” Jeff yelled, trying to wrestle one of the guys holding him down off him. The guy delivered a swift punch to the face. Jeff recoiled for a moment. Everything for a moment seemed to stop. Jeff’s heart thundered; his face burned. Tyler screamed as one of the guys pushed his head into the toilet. Jeff never felt such intense rage in his life. He punched the guy back, not just once, enough times that his face was messed up and bleeding. His nose looked lopsided. It was probably broken, but something inside him didn’t want to stop. Monty pulled him back, throwing him across the floor. “Atkins, what the fuck is your problem?”
“Let- Let Tyler go. Now.” His whole body was shaking, twitching with adrenaline.
Monty scoffed. “You should leave. Go suck Tyler’s dick another time.”
Jeff lunged at Monty, crashing him against the wall. They tumbled and fell to the floor, punching and kicking. The guy who was holding Tyler let go of him for the moment, in order to pull Jeff back and pull his arms around his back. Monty delivered two punches to the gut. Jeff gasped. “I don’t wanna fight, man.” Monty held out his hands. “But Tyler here is the reason our championship-winning season got canceled. And he needs to fucking pay.”
Jeff struggled against the grasp. There was no way he could win this fight. It was three on one. The odds were not in his favor. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. So he did what he did best, he reasoned with him. “Monty, Tyler wasn’t the only reason our season got canceled.”
“You’re right, it was him and his fucking boyfriend. What’s his fucking name? Cyrus?”
“No, Monty, you and me both know that the trial was a big part of why our season was canceled. I’m telling you this as your captain.” Jeff looked at him levelly.
“You’re right. It was the trial.” Monty stood up, chuckling. Jeff eyed him nervously as he strode around the bathroom, stepping on some blood on the floor. He wasn’t sure who’s it was at first point. “A trial that this shit testified in!”
All hell broke loose. Monty dived down and slammed Tyler’s head on the toilet, over and over. Jeff broke free of the grasp that was holding him back and quickly turned around and punched the guy in the face, sending the guy falling back against the sink. The guy with the broken nose got up, shoving Jeff into the corner and kicking him in the stomach.
Jeff gasped, grabbing his leg and pulling him down. Now both guys were fighting him, and all he could hear was the sound of Tyler screaming something and the blood pounding in his ears. He was so tired. He was tired of the baseball team and their bullshit. He was tired of the way they treated people. He was tired of being a part of it.
All of the exhaustion that he’d been holding within him for so long finally shifted into nothing but absolute rage. He hit the guy without the broken nose’s head against the sink. He didn’t pass out, but he didn’t make any moves to get up either, groaning and clutching at his forehead. He turned and grabbed the guy with the broken nose and threw him on top of Monty, who was about the pull down Tyler’s pants. “What the fuck are you doing?!” Jeff’s voice echoed around the room. Monty tried to shove the other guy off him, but Jeff kicked him in the face and there was a sickening crunch as Monty’s head hit the floor. There was blood all over his face. Definitely a broken nose.
Jeff quickly pulled Tyler up, whose chest was heaving with broken sobs. He was hyperventilating, but despite this, he managed to pull his pants up, looking down in shame. Jeff held onto his arm and quickly pulled them both out of the bathroom and into the hallway. Once they turned several corners, Jeff pulled Tyler aside. “I’m sorry,” he apologized.
“Why-why are you sorry?” Tyler tried to wipe away his tears.
Jeff sighed, eyeing one of Tyler’s wounds. “I could’ve done better, and I’m sorry that I haven’t.”
Tyler blinked, holding his forehead. Jeff seemed sincere, but he couldn’t bring himself to say anything. He just nodded.
Jeff smiled sadly. “C’mon, let’s go get those battle scars checked out.”
Tyler rolled his eyes. “They’re not battle scars yet. For now, I just look like the pathetic loser who got his ass kicked.”
Jeff chuckled. “You know, Tyler, I think you’re a lot tougher than you give yourself credit for. Now, come on.”
Hello so I didn’t really want to rewatch this scene in order to write this, so I’m just writing this from the top of my head. Also, I’m not sure how in character this is, but I just know that Jeff would hate who Monty became in season 2. I hope I did it justice.
