What Exactly Does TMS Do?

At Pasadena Neuropsychiatry, we emphasize the use of interventional treatment modalities that are non-invasive and clinically proven to effectively help patients who are experiencing mental illnesses and the associated side effects. We provide TMS treatments for OCD, anxious depression, treatment-resistant depression, and smoking cessation. Before you meet with our clinic, you may wonder, “What is TMS?”
What Is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, has been available to the public since 2008. This non-invasive treatment significantly increases a patient’s likeliness of effectively reaching remission compared to medication alone. At Pasadena Neuropsychiatry, we provide both standard rTMS and dTMS treatments.
During a Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment, a handheld device sends out electromagnetic pulses, which help regulate neural activity in the structures of the brain associated with mental illness. A more advanced treatment that can stimulate the deeper brain structures more effectively is Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS).
Depression and OCD TMS Treatments
To treat patients, dTMS utilizes a magnetic field in order to regulate the neural activity of structures in the brain that are associated with mental illness. Additionally, dTMS can be incorporated into an individual’s regular routine because it does not require anesthesia or recovery time. At Pasadena Neuropsychiatry, we utilize BrainsWay dTMS, which the FDA has cleared for both depression and OCD TMS treatments.
How Effective is dTMS?
As a non-invasive treatment with no recovery time, dTMS is highly effective. For patients who utilize only medication to treat their depression or OCD, the average remission rate is 11%.
When Brainsway dTMS is included in their treatment plan in addition to medication, the remission rate rises to 60%.
