Deer wreck injures Buhler woman, retirement reception for Little River police chief and other news 2-10

A Buhler woman was injured in a deer hit Thursday morning east of Hutchinson. Debra Kramer was checked out but refused EMS transport after the City of Hutchinson pickup she was driving struck the deer in the 7000 block of East 4th. Kramer was able to drive the truck from the scene.

The city of Little River is hosting a retirement party for Police Chief BJ Smith Saturday afternoon from 2-4 at the Little River Senior Center.

Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes was selected by 4th District Republican committee members last night as their candidate for the April 11th special election to fill the seat vacated by now CIA director Mike Pompeo. Estes was elected on the second ballot, getting 66 votes to 43 for former Americans for Prosperity state director Alan Cobb and 17 for former congressman Todd Tiahrt. Joseph Ashby and George Bruce were eliminated in the first round of voting. The Democratic and Libertarian candidates will be picked Saturday in Wichita. This election will be watched nationally as it’s the first special election since Donald Trump became president.

The Kansas Senate has postponed debate on a number of proposals to address the state’s budget shortfalls. The package of bills included plans to make cuts in spending this year including a five percent cut in school funding and repeal of tax exemptions for 330 thousand Kansas businesses.
