IT Strategy - What is it?

Too often, people that work inside the Information Technology (IT) department don’t fully comprehend that IT exists to serve the business needs.   New technology can be cool and fun but unless it is unleashed to directly benefit the topline or bottomline of the business, it is just wasteful spending.   

IT Strategy is a way to assess and determine a prioritized path to utilize Technology that will make the biggest impact on the business strategy.   That is why a good IT Strategy always starts with a well defined business strategy.   If you have a growth business strategy, IT can help by reaching new customers and consumers.   If you have an efficiency business strategy, IT can improve your processes and give you the information you need to understand the levers that drive the business.   Each unique business strategy will determine a unique path for IT to support that strategy.
