This farm is growing food deep beneath South Korean mountains
Outside the innovative tunnel farm.
“The world’s population is only going to grow but the environment is only getting worse to grow various vegetables, so I think it [vertical farms] will be the only alternative to provide healthy food to our table in the future,” said Choi.
By Temujin Doran and Katie Pisa CNN Dec 8, 2019
Excerpt:
North Chungcheong, South Korea (CNN)It might seem an unlikely place to be growing fruit, but deep beneath a South Korean mountain, a high-tech farm has been built inside an abandoned tunnel.
Once a functioning highway in the province of North Chungcheong, the tunnel’s sharp curve was deemed dangerous, so in 2002 it was closed and a more gently curved road was constructed nearby. Now this 2,000-feet-long (600 meter) tunnel is being used to grow salads, leafy greens, and strawberries.
It’s an example of “vertical farming” — a method of growing food without soil or natural light, in vertically stacked beds in a controlled environment. With no natural sunlight, here, LED lights are used to grow crops all year round.
They’re also what give the farm its pink glow — they emit only the spectrum of light that plants use to photosynthesize. More unusually, the music of Beethoven and Schubert is piped into the tunnel, because it encourages the produce to grow, according to Choi Jae-bin, CEO of NextOn, the company that created the farm.

Thousands of children will explore the vast Jordanian desert and learn about water conservation thanks to a unique Land Rover Discovery expedition.
The specially prepared Discovery family SUV will support the recipients of the 2017 Land Rover Bursary, administered by the Royal Geographical Society (with the IBG). The ‘Water Diaries’ expedition will cross one of the driest countries on the planet to investigate how the population manages its most precious resource, water.
The three-man team, led by geography teacher Fearghal O’Nuallain, was waved off on its month-long journey by year 11 pupils from St Peter’s Catholic School, Solihull. The pupils will follow O’Nuallain’s regular online broadcasts to support their geography studies and thousands of others across the UK and Ireland are expected to join in
Team leader Fearghal O’Nuallain said:
The Discovery is going to be critical to the success of our trip. It will take us across the vast sand dunes and rocky terrain of Jordan while carrying everything we need. Beyond simple transport, the specially enhanced SUV will also be our accommodation, laboratory, classroom and broadcast studio for four weeks.
The Discovery will also be home to field scientist Dr. Shane McGuinness and documentary film-maker Temujin Doran, who plan to make weekly online broadcasts to budding geographers about their trip on their website http://www.thewaterdiaries.com/. To guarantee the team’s lessons go ahead each week, Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division prepared the unique Discovery.
An expedition roof rack will help carry the team’s kit and a pair of awnings will provide shelter from the elements for the regular broadcasts, while off-road lighting will illuminate the challenging terrain after dark. A split battery charging system and power inverter will drive the team’s electrical kit while a load space partition will ensure luggage remains safely in place over rough terrain. Additional fuel and water supplies will help the expedition go further.
Mark Cameron, Jaguar Land Rover Experiential Marketing Director, said:
Our partnership with the Royal Geographical Society (with the IBG) is important to us as part of our commitment to contribute to research, education and fieldwork expeditions.
The Land Rover Discovery is one of the most capable SUVs in the world so our enhancements were focused on the specific requirements of the expedition. Adding extra storage capacity, both physical and electrical, plus some much-needed shelter, will ensure the team can live, work and broadcast in relative comfort despite their unforgiving surroundings.
The Royal Geographical Society (IBG) Land Rover Bursary is now in its 10th year and 2017 is the first time the Discovery has been used to support the winners. The ultimate family SUV will have to contend with Jordan’s rugged landscape and the three-man crew have received expert all-terrain driving tuition to fully prepare them.

During a day with the instructors at the Land Rover Experiences East of England facility, in Rockingham, the trio was introduced to the Discovery’s comprehensive all-terrain capabilities, including the Terrain Response 2 system. The advanced set-up automatically configures the vehicle to suit surfaces with modes including Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl.
During the month-long expedition, the team plans to study how Bedouin tribes locate and transport water in the Wadi Rum region. They will spend four days living alongside nomads, stopping at a flourishing farm that uses ancient and modern techniques to provide almost all the food consumed in one of the driest places on earth and meet experts working to save Arabian Oryx from extinction.
No trip to Jordan would be complete without visiting the city of Petra. Here the team will meet archaeologists working at the World Heritage Site. From this ancient civilization, the Discovery will take the team to investigate an advanced infrastructure project that could bring water security to the entire region – a desalination plant in the Gulf of Aqaba and a pipeline linking the Red Sea with the Dead Sea.

2017 Land Rover Bursary expedition sets off
This year’s Land Rover Bursary will fund a three-person expedition, ‘The Water Diaries’, to drive across Jordan, where they will explore how one of the driest countries on earth manages its water resources, and share their findings with schools.
The Land Rover Bursary, now in its 10th year, provides funding of up to £30,000 and the use of a Discovery SUV to undertake a challenging and inspiring journey to promote a wider understanding and enjoyment of geography. Land Rover has been a corporate supporter of the Society for over 30 years, providing equipment, expertise, funding, and training for the Society’s fieldwork and expeditions work.
This year, a three-person expedition led by geography teacher Fearghall O’Nuallain will drive across Jordan investigating how the country’s population manages one of its most precious natural resources: water.
With field scientist Dr Shane McGuiness and documentary film maker Temujin Doran, the team plans to study how Bedouin tribes locate and transport water in the Wadi Rum region. They will spend four days living alongside nomads, stopping at a flourishing farm that uses ancient and modern techniques to provide almost all the food consumed in one of the driest places on earth, and meet experts working to save Arabian Oryx from extinction. On a visit to the city of Petra, they will meet archaeologists working at the World Heritage Site. From this ancient civilisation, the Discovery will take the team to investigate an advanced infrastructure project that could bring water security to the entire region – a desalination plant in the Gulf of Aqaba and a pipeline linking the Red Sea with the Dead Sea.
The expedition set off from St Peter’s Catholic School, Solihull. The team will be making regular broadcasts about their trip for school pupils to support their geography studies. It provides students with an opportunity to follow the expedition across the Jordanian desert, and learn about water conservation.
In previous years, recipients have mapped the first long-distance hiking trail across the Lesser Caucasus, studied active volcanoes in the South American Andes, and researched landslides at high altitudes in the Alps.

On Manifestos
A manifesto can be defined as ‘ a public declaration of opinions, objectives, or motives, as issued by a government, sovereign or organization’ (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/manifesto)  although it can also be issued by an individual.
The word ‘manifesto’ originates from the Italian word manifestare which means ‘to make public’, and the latin word manifestus, ‘to make obvious.’ (https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=manifesto+definition) A manifesto, therefore is a means to clearly express and declare an ideology.
Manifestoes are usually associated with (but not limited to) making political aims and agendas public, and are usually seen as a form of propaganda distributed and spread via written and visual posters and speeches. The variety of formats and media through which a manifesto can be presented are endless. Examples of formats through which a manifesto can be presented or ‘manifest’ in are but not limited to image, text, videography, speech, sound, sculptural form – it can be a combination of any of these. A person could also act as a vessel for and embody a manifesto.
Manifestos play an important part in art and especially illustrations. We discussed the different art movements that made use of a manifesto and helped in the expansion of what the manifesto could be. These art movements played a part in the evolution of the manifesto to the diverse embodiment it is today. Futurism, Dadaism, Bahaus, De Stijl, Fluxus and Stuckist movement were mentioned as examples of art movements that incorporated the manifesto in varied degrees between a direct and explicit format to more subtle formats.
What interested me in particular was the importance of imagery in manifestos – and how it is present in and dominates a lot of illustration. The concept behind the manifesto and illustration are similar as they both aim to clarify concepts to target audiences. Manifestos make ‘obvious’ and ‘public’, while illustrations ‘enlighten’ and ‘demonstrate’. Hence they both are interconnected. It is difficult to make distinctions between the two with broad definitions – which I find all the more interesting as it promotes pushing the boundaries of illustration. I am really interested in the subtle use of signification to influence the information viewers receive in illustrations – I plan on exploring this further. I’ll end this blog post with the video titled ” An Illustrator’s Manifesto, in Poetry and Pictures”, by Temujin Doran.

“In this part of the afterlife, you imagine something analogous to earthly life, and the thought is blissful. A life where episodes are split into tiny, swallowable pieces. Where moments do not endure, where one experiences the joy of jumping from one event to the next - like a child hopping from spot to spot on the burning sand.”

If this were just a video of a guy dancing on the ice in Antarctica, I'd love it anyway, for obvious reasons. But this is Union Glacier, a place I've been reading a lot about lately but had no idea what it looked like until I stumbled upon this video.
Union Glacier is the launch spot for the majority of South Pole expeditions. Think of it like Everest Base Camp, but for Antarctica. It's where all of the modern day polar adventurers and explorers hang out.
This is Temujin Doran, a videographer, just days before he and his team started their journey to complete Captain Scott’s iconic 1,795 mile Terra Nova route from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back.
People are amazing, aren't they?
