Play for Today: The Lie (BBC, 1970)
"I don't understand a word you're saying."
"I didn't expect you to. See, at a certain point people of your sort cease to exist. You just turn into a sort of impersonal astonishment, or at most, a well formulated expression of disapproval."
#play for today#the lie#single play#classic tv#ingmar bergman#alan bridges#Paul Britten Austin#gemma jones#frank finlay#joss ackland#mark dignam#annette crosbie#john carson#jennifer daniel#caroline blakiston#liane aukin#noel coleman#gwen cherrell#john nettleton#terence bayler#one of the very first Plays for Today ever shown wasn't really a PfT at all; The Lie was commissioned as part of The Largest Theatre in the#World‚ an experiment in which a play would be broadcast simultaneously in different countries across Europe‚ with each country submitting#different language versions of a text. Thus the UK version went out as one of the earliest PfTs. there's a school of thought that the play#is a poor fit for the series (PfT generally leaning toward social realism on the lower class end of the scale) but I'm not sure that's the#issue (after all the remit was to reflect life in all its myriad forms‚ even perhaps (gasp) the bourgeoisie); if anything i think the#problem is that the series was intended to champion new voices in uk drama‚ something Bergman was about as far from as possible. regardless#of its sitting with its fellow plays‚ this really is a phenomenal piece of tv; an agonising slow burn dissection of a marriage bound up in#apathy and ignorance and lies. Gemma Jones is quite incredible‚ and manages to make something very nearly pitiable of her cold and hardened#academic; Finlay is understated and quiet (until he isn't) and there are moments of brutal‚ uncomfortable tension. a glittering cast of#supporting faces is dominated by Annette Crosbie in a truly magnificent part that probably doesn't even get 3 minutes of screentime

#HappyBirthdayTerenceBayler #BaraoSangrento #Harrypotter #potterheads #hogwarts #always #HarryPotterCE #HPce #THA #AX

The Brothers: The Hammond Account (3.1, BBC, 1974)
"Jenny... I don't want to rake over the ashes, but there are bound to be social occasions when I need someone with me - and no more than that."
"All right. You drive me. But I shall be wearing the same old dress you've seen before."
"Good. It suits you."

Terence Bayler, Harry Potter and Monty Python star, dies at 86
Terence Bayler, known for his acting roles with Monty Python and in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, has died aged 86.
Bayler, who was born in New Zealand, played the Bloody Baron in the first Potter movie, and Mr Gregory in ‘The Life of Brian’.
– Fans slam ‘sexist’ Jumanji costume – Daniel Radcliffe slams ‘racist’ Hollywood – Sam Neill updates on Jurassic World
The part was most famous for the line ‘I’m Brian, and so is my wife!’, delivered during the crucifixion scene at the end of the movie.
In tribute, Monty Python’s Eric Idle, who starred in the movie with Bayler, said: “I think the thing I loved most about Terence Bayler was his gentle loving considerate humour.
“I loved his commitment to a role and his high seriousness no matter how apparently silly the part. For a writer there is nothing finer than an actor taking your work and making it better than you imagined it.”
Bayler had also been among the cast of Eric Idle and Neil Innes’ BBC sketch show Rutland Weekend Television.
It was through this show, that he went on to play Brian Epstein parody Leggy Mountbatten, the manager of a fictional Beatles-esque band in the all-star mockumentary ‘All You Need Is Cash’, alongside Idle, Michael Palin, George Harrison, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray.
He also often worked with Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam, appearing in the movies ‘Time Bandits’ and ‘Brazil’, and played Macduff in Roman Polanski’s 1971 version of ‘Macbeth’.
His last movie was the British horror film ‘Chemical Wedding’, with Simon Callow, released in 2008 and directed by Julian Doyle,
He is survived by his wife, Valerie Cutko, and two children from his first marriage to Bridget Armstrong.
