The aerostat consists of four major parts or assemblies: the hull, the windscreen and radar platform, the airborne power generator, and the rigging and tether assembly. The hull of the aerostat contains two parts separated by a gas-tight fabric partition. The upper chamber is filled with helium and provides the aerostat’s lifting capability. The lower chamber of the hull is a pressurized air compartment called a ballonet. A sophisticated subsystem maintains constant pressurization of the ballonet, which maintains the shape of the aerostat’s hull at all altitudes. The hull is constructed of a lightweight polyurethane-coated or Tedlar fabric that weighs only eight ounces per yard. This is the aerostat, or radar surveillance blimp, that lives at the army base near our house. If you ever see it on the ground, it is enormous.Â
In the sky it looks small but you can see it for miles, and if you look hard you can see the lines where it is tethered to the ground. It goes up every day unless it is very windy, but it is often windy here.
The surveillance aspect is a bit unsettling, but I sort of like the way it looks. And it makes for a hell of a landmark.

At its maximum altitude, the aerostat is visible from just about any location in Cochise County. Like @textless and @inlandwest, I have begun using it get my bearings. If I can see it to the east of me that means I have a very long way to go to get home.Â

This aerostat, moored between Marfa and Valentine, TX, is part of the Customs and Border Patrol's Tethered Aerostat Radar System. It's a blimp attached to a nearly five mile long tether that monitors the airspace over the U.S./Mexico border in West Texas.
