Wine and snacks to followed. It was rumored that the after-party would be more of a Holiday-Hoot-Nanny than usual. A party of dominant women had taken control and our LHCF Management was not responsible for the outcome.
Somehow the entire menu of Chuy's showed up on long tables around the picnic table. The only problem was that since the darkness was upon us, we needed headlamps to see what we were eating. Consultation with a local Rabbi representative gave his/her imprimatur endorsing the accidental consumption of non-kosher Mexican food in a drunken darkness. All the food was consumed. Also there were fancy cookies, fancy cupcakes, and other snacks.
Alcoholic beverages were well represented. Approximately 4 good white wines and 10 good red wines were available. (The menu at North Italia has toasted Italian Bread and GOOD Olive Oil. Can we ask for BAD Olive Oil)?? Tom brought some expensive old wine but I barely got a taste. Ed was kept busy with his big-ass blender making Icy Margarita's with top-shelf Tequila. In spite of everyone's best efforts, there was a tiny bit of wine left over for next week.
The fancy cupcakes were in fact a variety of small birthday cakes intended for a belated celebration of Sweet Shannon's 36th birthday (Armando said). We sang an unbelievably harmonious birthday song and she blew out her candles. Shannon gifted me a good book for her birthday. I love her.
Several non-WOD people came for the after-party. Larry's kiddo's and the lovely Crystal came (Howards Daughter). Chase's glowing Anna came (after sending Anna's home-made bread and butter). And naturally Sammy D somehow interrupted his trades of Bitcoin and high-commission annuities, drawn to the scent of free booze, Mexican food, and very fit women. Cherrita missed another good one.
Bill P came for his 2nd workout. He performed admirably but with humility (2+). He had purchased new CrossFitting shoes and left with a borrowed Jump-Rope he wanted for practice (2+). He totally skipped out on the after-party (-1), but spontaneously inquired as to the time of the early Saturday workout (+1). With a total score of +4, odds are that he will return at least one more time.

When I started CrossFit in 2015, it only took about a week for me to develop an unhealthy obsession with shopping for the best CrossFit shoes. Even though the NOBULL brand launched that same year, I didn’t buy my first pair of trainers until 2019. Since putting them through hundreds of workouts, I can deliver this NOBULL shoes review.
Based on comments I used to hear at the box where I started my CrossFit journey and from the feedback I’ve collected from other Breaking Muscle staff members, one thing is clear: NOBULL trainers can be pretty controversial. Below, I’ll explore why this is and discuss the shoes’ benefits, drawbacks, key features, and who they’re best suited for.

NOBULL Shoes Pros
NOBULL shoes come in lots of colors and prints. If you want to stand out in the gym or like wearing color-coordinated gym attire, you should be able to find a colorway that suits your style.
They are durable. I still have the first pair of NOBULL trainers I bought in 2019, and they don’t look much different now than when I first took them out of the box.
The lug-patterned outsole provides much traction whether you’re training indoors or outdoors.
NOBULL Shoe Cons
The trainers aren’t good for running or jumping due to the lack of cushioning, poor arch support, and minimal forefoot flexibility.
While their price point of around $129 to $149 is on par with other CrossFit shoes, other brands regularly offer sales and discounts. NOBULL shoes are rarely on sale, which can be a drawback for budget-conscious CrossFitters.

NOBULL Shoes Overview
NOBULL shoes are a somewhat minimalist, back-to-basics type of training shoe. They’re designed to withstand rope climbs, burpees, handstand push-ups, powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, and anything else your workout of the day (WOD) has in store.
However, they can be pretty polarizing. Some CrossFitters claim NOBULL trainers are the most comfortable shoes they’ve ever worn. Others claim the shoes lack design ingenuity and don’t perform as well as other well-known shoes, like the Nike Metcons.
While NOBULL has released new shoe models over the years — for instance, the Rec Trainers and the NOBULL runners — the original trainers haven’t changed much. The NOBULL Trainer+ came out in 2022 with some improvements over the original trainer, which I’ll discuss later in the comparison section. But in general, NOBULL hasn’t strayed too far from the design of their original trainers.
Who Are NOBULL Shoes Good For?
The overall stability of the shoe and the rigidity of the flat sole can make NOBULL trainers suitable for athletes who focus primarily on strength training.
In our experience, NOBULL trainers don’t have a super wide toe box, so they are ideal for athletes with narrow feet.
Who Are NOBULL Shoes Not Good For?
Because of the hard bottom, lack of arch support, and minimal cushioning, the NOBULL trainers may not be suitable for anyone who wants a comfortable sneaker they can wear all day.
Athletes who prefer to wear heeled weightlifting shoes for squats will likely not enjoy the four-millimeter heel-to-toe drop on the NOBULL trainers. (Note, however, that NOBULL sells weightlifting shoes with 17.5- and 18.5-millimeter heel-to-toe drops.)
NOBULL Shoes In-Depth Review
Appearance
The design of the NOBULL trainers is one thing that makes them so controversial. Some people love the minimalist aesthetic, while others consider it essential and uninspired. I’m part of the latter camp — I don’t necessarily think that NOBULL has accomplished anything groundbreaking or unique with its trainer.
However, NOBULL makes up for this by offering its shoes in unique colors and prints. For example, as of this writing, the women’s shoes are available in fun colorways, such as neon blue, bright pink camo, multiple floral patterns, and highlighter yellow. If you prefer more understated footwear, you can opt for solid colors, like black, gray, or navy.
I don’t like my gym shoes too flashy, but I don’t want them to be too dull. When I bought my first pair of NOBULL trainers, I chose a gray upper with a blue, pink, and purple patterned sole and matching laces. I like that this colorway has a small pop of color that keeps them from being too drab without being so bright that you can spot me from a mile away when I wear them.
The NOBULL trainers also have one of the largest selections of prints and colors I’ve seen in any gym sneaker, let alone a CrossFit shoe. You can get them in high tops like the Converse Chuck Taylors. They get a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars for aesthetics from this CrossFit shoe junkie.

Materials
NOBULL shoes are made with SuperFabric® technology. NOBULL takes regular mesh fabric and applies tiny guard plates, resulting in a material that is highly resistant to abrasions. I’m not always gentle with how I treat my shoes, but my NOBULL trainers hardly have any scuff marks or imperfections.
However, the SuperFabric® material is not very breathable. I appreciate this in the winter when I’m training in my cold garage because it helps keep my feet warm. But I don’t particularly enjoy the lack of breathability in the summer because it makes my feet hot and sweaty. The suede tongue has holes for ventilation, but I don’t think they do much.
The material is also stiff. I still have to loosen the shoelaces nearly all the way to get the shoes on, and I’ve had the trainers for four years. Because of the material’s stiffness and minimal breathability, I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Outsole
NOBULL trainers have a flat, stable carbon rubber outsole with a grippy lug pattern and a reinforced sidewall. The shoes don’t slide around easily when I’m lifting on the rubber gym flooring in my garage, and on the rare occasions that I have worn them for outdoor runs, I haven’t felt like I was going to slip.
The bottoms have less traction now than when I first got the shoes, but the outsoles haven’t worn down as quickly as many of my other cross-training shoes. I gave the outsole 4.3 out of 5 stars for this reason.
Midsole
The midsole features a lightweight foam material that doesn’t compress. This is a great feature when you’re lifting heavy weights, as you want your shoes to help you feel balanced and stable. However, it’s a drawback for sprints, jumping, and other high-impact activities because the midsole isn’t very shock-absorbing or responsive (meaning it doesn’t offer much energy transfer when your feet hit the ground). I only scored the midsole 3 out of 5 stars because, as discussed below, the shoe’s minimal midsole limits its versatility.
Heel-to-Toe Drop
NOBULL trainers have a four-millimeter heel-to-doe drop. The low heel-to-toe drop makes it ideal for heavy lifts because it keeps you more balanced and stable. The NOBULL trainers are my go-to shoes for days of only doing strength training.
However, I give them 4.2 stars for the heel-to-toe drop because I prefer a heeled lifting shoe for heavy squats. I’m 5’8 and have long legs, and a higher heel-to-toe drop makes it easier for me to squat below parallel.
They’re good shoes for lifters who prefer squatting in flatter shoes. They don’t work for me for most barbell squat variations.

“Flight was delayed but I’ll be there in 10. Did I miss anything?”
The atrium at Lexcorp was packed with reporters, waiting for Luthor to appear for his press conference about a new tech ‘defense’ system that they were working on, but there had been no sign of him showing up any time soon. No one else in the crowd looked particularly surprised either, everyone working on their phones, reading their books, chatting with their colleagues. It was generally understood that any Lexcorp press conference would be at least half an hour behind schedule, but no one wanted to show up late just in case it was the once that it started when it was supposed to .
“Nope. Luthor’s late. Again.”
“Typical.”
Lois grinned and went back to her game while casually thinking about ways that she could phrase her article to point out the tardiness of the announcement without sounding petty about it or distracting from the point of the announcement. Lex was never late when he was trying to destroy the world and she thought that it was a little bit rude of him to have such a double standard. He was just wasting all of the reporter’s times and gave Lois the nagging feeling that she wanted to kick him in the shins for it.

She glanced around the room quickly, but no one else seemed to have noticed that something was strange. Maybe she had imagined it?
“Please tell me you felt that too,” said a familiar voice just as a coffee from her favourite local shop was lowered down in front of her face. Lois grabbed and downed half it with gusto, wincing as it burned on the way down. Something in her gut was agreeing with the soles of her feet and told her that things were about to happen, and she was going to take her caffeine jolt where she could get it and as fast as possible..
“Sure did.”
Iris chuckled and took a slower, more reasonable sip of her own coffee. “I haven’t lived in Metropolis for a long time, but earthquakes didn’t become a common thing since I’ve been gone, did they?”
It had been years since Iris had moved to Central and they didn’t get to see each other as much as they liked, but Lois missed the days when she was still new to the Planet and Iris was an intern fresh out of university. The days before Clark Kent and Barry Allen had been in either of their lives and they were just two young women facing the world on their own. They could have easily been rivals, fighting tooth and claw for the same stories or opportunities, but instead they got along like sisters and Lois had been sad when Iris had eventually moved away and for a time they only saw each other when their assignments aligned, and that was typically around national disasters, so not the best place to catch up.
Until a Kryptonian and a metahuman reconnected them in a different way that neither of them had expected and it was just something else that they had in common.
“No they did not.” Lois pulled her hair up into a ponytail, getting ready for whatever chaos was about to start because running around with her hair in her face was annoying. “Assuming that it wasn’t a random earthquake, any guesses on what it is?”
“Well, based on that it seems to be coming from beneath us my educated guess is ‘monster’ but the real question is what type is it this time?”
“Luthor usually tries to avoid smashing up his own buildings so I assume he’s uninvolved.” Lois scanned the room and thought about what would possibly be bothering them here. It was a press conference, but it wasn’t expected that Luthor was going to say anything world altering, so it seemed more coincidental than targeted. “I’m betting multiverse breach.”
“You always go multiverse breach. Such a boring headline. I expected better from you, Lois.”
“I’m playing the odds. It happens way more often than it should.”
“Fine. I’m going ‘mad scientist who accidentally made himself into a monster’ then.”
“Good call. We haven’t had one of those in a while.” Lois tossed her coffee cup into a nearby bin; better to minimize the things in her hands or potential tripping hazards in case of a stampede people. “Usual wager?”
“Obviously.” The floor trembled again, and this time more people took notice and there was a murmur going through the crowd. Iris looked down and frowned. “I wish I hadn’t worn these shoes. They are terrible for apocalypses.”
“And you didn’t remember your purse flats?” Lois shook her head and clicked her tongue disapprovingly. “Rookie movie, West. You know better than that.”
“They didn’t fit in my carry on.” Iris scuffed her shoes, low heels but still heels, against the floor. “Whatever’s coming is almost here. I can feel it getti-”
Iris was cut off as the pavement just outside the doors exploded upwards, cement flying everywhere, and people started screaming and running around in a panic both inside and outside as a twenty foot tall metallic beast pulled itself out of the hole and went stomping off away from the building, some destination east of LexCorp in mind. Or programmed in. Whatever.
“Huh. Giant robot.” Lois watched as the robot ripped out a tree and threw it down 17th street. That was just unnecessary destruction of property. “We both lose. Guess we split the nachos this time.”
“God, I haven’t been to Santiago’s for lunch in so long. I’m going to be mad if that robot smashes it all up again.” said Iris as the robot stopped to punch a parked car repeatedly. She looked around the room calmly, watching the formerly professional journalists forget how to act in an emergency. “You want inside or outside?
“I’ll go out, you corral in and meet me out there.”
“Sounds fair.” Lois headed towards the door while Iris ran up to the podium and started speaking into the mic, her calm but firm news reporter voice filling the room. “Can I have everyone’s attention towards me and not at the giant robot outside, please? I’m aware that we are all reporters and the desire to get the scoop on this makes you want to go outside, but let’s all gather under the arch so that no one gets killed. You’ll be able to get pictures on your phones from there all while not being squished, and you can still get your headlines.”

“He’s trapped and I think that we should push the rock of him but I’m afraid if we do there is a chance that he might bleed out. We don’t know what it’s like underneath there.”

They didn’t have anything handy to make a splint out of so couldn’t move him, so instead they both sat down beside him and Lois laid her jacket on top of him to try and keep him warm.
“Damn that was heavy. Good thing we lift,” said Lois, stretching out her legs and shaking out her arms a bit, trying to get some of the feeling back in them. That Crossfit membership really was paying for itself.
“My Fitbit is going to be so confused by that.” Iris dug around in her purse a bit and held a package out to Lois, over top of the unconscious man. “Gum?”
Lois popped a piece into her mouth and chewed for a bit while they watched the robot knock a fire hydrant over, causing water to shoot up into the air. “Who do you think is going to show up first once the robot’s been dismantled? Clark’s closer, but Barry’s faster.”
“You actually weigh in on that silly argument?” laughed Iris, shaking her head. “I try and stay out of that debate other than ‘yes, honey, of course I know you’re faster than Superman’.”
“I’m not going to lie just to make him feel better. He’s not the best at everything and we both know it. You should see him try and wash the windows. Streaks galore.”
“Clark will be here first. Barry doesn’t like to pop up on someone else’s turf uninvited.”
“Clark might not even show up since we're all fine. Either way, we’re good. We’ve got this part all under control.” Something caught Lois’ eye and she stood up and jogged down the steps. “Wait there.” She stopped at an abandoned coffee cart that was thankfully still right side up, poured two cups, tucked a $10 bill into the register and then returned to Iris and handed her a cup. “You got the last round.”
The robot tore down a traffic light, sparks visible in the distance when the power lines snapped.
