Music I think Roy Kent likes and why
Madonna. In season 3, episode 3, Roy said, "[Pre-Madonna] means before Madonna, female vocalists didn't have to work that hard." This implies a great respect for Madonna and her craft. Also, it's an example of a very specific kind of queer guy misogyny that I find very humorous and implicative (of him being queer).
The Sex Pistols (and other punk rock). Two of their songs are in the Ted Lasso soundtrack. One of them specifically plays when Roy is about to do some pundit work for the first time. I think it's meant to be his hype up music. They're also, of course, anti-fascist and anti-monarchy, which I think Roy would vibe with. He's giving punk.
The music of the Muppets. Canonically (not that I necessarily consider this kind of thing canon, lol) a Muppets fan, I think he'd love the soundtracks to the movies, as well as the numbers they do on the original show.
Rap; Salt-n-Pepa, Queen Latifah, and Beyoncé. I just think he would like them. In season 1, episode 6, Keeley mentions that he has rapped, implying at least some interest in the genre.
Leonard Cohen. I think Roy's Jewish, and he's a broody, sensual bitch. It adds up perfectly. Sidenote: while "She's a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones was a great choice for the song he runs home to football to, I think Cohen's "Ain't No Cure for Love" would've fucking slayyyed..."I loved you for a long, long time / I know this love is real / It don't matter how it all went wrong / That don't change the way I feel / And I can't believe that time is gonna heal / This wound that I'm speaking of" "I've got you like a habit / And I'll never get enough" "I don't need to be forgiven / For loving you so much"
Klezmer. Again, if Roy is Jewish, and we know he loves and misses his grandad...it's simple. He HAS a record player and a dope sound system, and on his shelves there ARE old klezmer records that he remembers dancing around to with his grandad in their old flat.
Amy Winehouse. Again, if Roy is Jewish, and we know he is broody and bitchy, it is a given. "Rehab" is his anthem when his knee gets bad and he is reluctant to treat it.
Disco; Donna Summer and Jessie Ware. It's just great workout music, and it slays, and if he's queer, well, yes, of course he likes disco.
Pop rock; Elton John and Queen. If he's queer...it's a given. I think he particularly likes "I Think I'm Going to Kill Myself" and "Rocket Man", as he is suicidal (I can't find the interview where Goldstein said this) (it's just Word of God anyway), and the most rocket man motherfucker ever.
The music of the people he loves; Led Zeppelin, Cream, Tina Turner, and Stevie Nicks. Phoebe, Keeley, and Jamie like these musicians. He's a caring uncle, boyfriend, and friend. He is listening and learning. Also, I think Phoebe would be into some weird stuff, like outsider music - maybe some Tiny Tim. I think Roy would also enjoy the music of other friends, from plenty of other genres.

The racist hate against white people, being COMPLETELY acceptable, is what emboldens the mentally ill to kill. Just imagine the races reversed. But you won't see the riots, the vandalism, the burning and looting, the murders, protests, congressional boo hoo hooing, the Justice Department, FBI, involvement in this case.
After all, it was just a white, innocent, 3 year old.

THE PUNDIT's PICKS: Best of 2024, Mid-Year Round-Up [*Part 1*]
Tumblr media
Part 1 of 1,403.
Hey folks, it's been a while. Life is hectic, and I'm too old to have any idea who still uses a Tumblr account in 2024...but the good news is that I'm also too old to care. At this point I'm just going to keep doing this so that I'm able to track the onslaught of great new music that drops month to month, and also to appreciate the rare occasion when I can connect with a lesser known indy artist that's still young enough in the game to truly appreciate a shout-out for their talent, regardless of whether or not the writer doing the shouting has a large enough audience to make a direct impact on their financial future.
I can't believe we're approaching the midpoint of the year and this is my first song list of 2024. That being said, please believe this infreency has nothing to do with the volume of great music that's already been released this year. Quite the contrary, there have been a number of noteworthy albums, highlights, and even headline news (hey did you guys hear about that Drake & Kendrick feud from last month?). This year in rap has proven to be unpredictable in some of the best ways possible, continuing the trend of having attention grabbing music bubble up from the underground, but also paired with a number of interesting MC's from all over the globe with mainstream star potential that are making some noise in their respective circles.
In time, I believe 2024 will be remembered as a triumphant year for rap music, perhaps even a turning point for the genre (in terms of where we go from here). I'm here to provide some examples of some of my favorite songs of the year thus far. Keep in mind, this is just my first list, with plenty more planned to come (so please do not consider this list as all-inclusive of "the best" songs of the year, just the first batch)....here's *Part 1*, in no particular order:
"I'm G (OMG)" - Blu & Shafiq Husayn feat. Chuuwee & Born Allah
"Free Jesus" - Mike Shabb feat. Navy Blue
youtube
"expensive piss" - shemar & Child Actor
"Marlanna" - Rapsody
youtube
"30" - JID & Conductor Williams
youtube
"SONJE" - Mach-Hommy
youtube
"Memoriam pt. 2" - Sleep Sinatra feat. desde
"Put The Word In" - Jay Cinema & Chow
"Yea Yea" - Star Bandz
youtube
"Mountain Goat" - DJ Lucas & DVNTBEATS
youtube
"Cave In" - Yo OG
"Oh Wow" - Deleteeglitch feat. Denmark Vessey
"Stories" - Ol' Burgers Beats feat. JVon & Vuyo
"See The Sunset" - Nick Satchel & Dp0mmy
"Pliers" - Previous Industries
youtube
"I Ain't Hidin" - Myaap feat. Mg Sleepy
youtube
"Pokemon Trainer" - Papo2oo4

The Proud Boys’ presence at the festival is the latest example of the far-right street-fighting gang’s willingness to forge alliances with fringe groups.
By Tess Owen
October 10, 2023, 7:04pm
In what can only be described as a meeting of minds, the Proud Boys appear to have aligned themselves with an ultra-fringe religious sect in Pennsylvania that worships with AR-15s.
The Sanctuary Church, also known as Rod of Iron Ministries, is run by Pastor Hyung-Jin “Sean” Moon. Moon’s late father founded the international “Unification Church,” an alleged cult whose adoring followers were known as “Moonies.”
The younger Moon, with the help of his brother Justin Moon (owner of a gun company, Kahr Arms) founded his own church in 2017, putting a militant, AR-15 centric spin on his father’s teachings.
This weekend, the church hosted its fourth annual “Rod of Iron Freedom Festival” at the Kahr Arms warehouse in Greeley, Pennsylvania, about 45 miles from Scranton. The event included a performance by Pastor Moon, aka “King Bullethead,” who rapped about putting pedophiles in “the wood chipper.” It also featured a ceremonial burning of a pansexual Pride flag, speeches by failed local political candidates, as well as hard-right pundit and former Trump official Seb Gorka — and, of course, the Proud Boys. Some members of the church had traveled from as far as Korea and Japan to attend.
... the church has also cultivated local political influence that has helped draw the likes of the Proud Boys and “parents’ rights” groups Moms for Liberty into their orbit.
... the younger Moon has sought to embed his church not only in right-wing politics but in MAGA culture. Moon and other church officials were tear-gassed outside the Capitol on Jan 6, and Moon’s sermons can be labeled, broadly, as Christian Nationalist.

saying you don’t like rap because it’s only about violence and sex and drugs is insane like you do realize you sound like some racist Fox News pundit right. you know it’s not different just because you’re autistic or gay or whatever right

“This is the song everyone is singing,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said about an anti-LGBTQ+ rap song from MAGA rapper Forgiato Blow, who calls himself the “Mayor of Magaville.”
The song, “Fock Bud Light,” is about the right’s anger towards Bud Light that started last week when trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney made an Instagram video with some custom beer cans.
The video opens with Fox News host Tucker Carlson misgendering Mulvaney, Blow shouting “Fuck Bud Light” over and over, and images of cases of beer on fire.
“If you’re gay, just be gay in your bedroom,” Blow raps. “If you’re trans, just be trans in your bedroom.”
Another rapper, Stoney Dudebro, performs the second verse wearing a “Blacks for Trump” t-shirt: “Fake news always spreading disease, like two queers with HIV.”
There is plenty of American flag and MAGA imagery throughout the video, as well as people pouring out cans of Bud Light, reminiscent to videos that conservatives have been posting to social media where they dump out Bud Light in protest of Mulvaney’s partnership with the brand.
“This is the result of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” Greene tweeted, sharing the video. “Bud Light chose a segment of the population that already has the same rights as everyone else and decided to join the movement that is grooming and sexualizing children and destroying women’s rights.”
“Bud Light should apologize and kick Dylan Mulvaney to the curb.”
Tumblr media
Republicans have been tripping over themselves to denounce Bud Light for the partnership with Mulvaney, one of hundreds of partnerships the beer company has with social media influencers.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show this week that the U.S.’s allies will abandon the country because of the Mulvaney video. Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) posted a video to social media announcing his “boycott” of Bud Light, only to get made fun of for showing his refrigerator full of other beers sold by Bud Light’s parent company, Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Conservative musician Kid Rock shot up four cases of Bud Light with a semiautomatic weapon and posted the video to social media. Fox News pundit and failed gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner – who is transgender herself – accused Mulvaney of “trying to erase women” for a Nike partnership that Mulvaney announced last week.

Is there a difference between a goon and a thug?
colloquially speaking, no... both terms mean basically the same thing. As an idiom, however, thug is more loaded.
The term 'thug' is derived from 'thuggee' or the Sanskrit phrase for concealment. Bands of Thugs were reported to bedevil English colonizers in Central India, although I'm imagine these accounts were sensationalized.
I decided to retire the term 'thug' from my own usage because I don't like the way it has been appropriated in conservative politics and media. Herein 'thug' is always used to describe some non-white group or individual who are viewed as doing something bad. It's kind of a modernized version of the n-word that pundits and politicos can use without fear of getting into trouble.
Thug is also frequently used in the lexicon of hip-hop. As much as I appreciate and enjoy rap and hip-hop, using its language as my own doesn't feel genuine.
of course all of this is needlessly pedantic, but perhaps other word-nerds might find it interesting

I'm on cloud 9 rn Bpp. NOTHING can bring me down today. I'm going to get a manicure, make a cucumber salad, and binge watch jikook content on youtube. I hope you're having a great day.
Ask 2: Wow! 5X nominated artists. First Korean act in HISTORY to bag that many nominations consecutively. Namjoon, Yoongi, Hoseok all Grammy nominated songwriters. BTS KEEP WINNING. Even if they don't get the final awards, they have WON. I'm so proud of them!
*
Ask 3: AAAAAAAAAAA IM SO HAPPY FOR BTSSSSSS
*
Ask 4: Kpoppies are going through the 5 stages of grief right now and it's kinda funny cos don't they realize the only reason they can even ;hope; for a nomination is because of BTS? They spend all their waking hours hating BTS and mocking Armys, insulting all the work it took us to break this glass ceiling and then they start crying when their faves are ignored for even nominations?? BTS worked their way up from music show wins on Inkigayo, to MMA bosangs, to MMA and MAMA daesangs, to BBMAs, to EMAs, to AMAs, to the Grammys and other international awards. The entire time kpoppies were insulting them and saying BTS wanted Western validation that their own faves were above that. But now they're crying because groups that don't even have daesangs weren't nominated for the Grammys? Armys aren't my favorite people, but at least Armys aren't half as delusional as kpoppies. It must suck to be a BTS anti cos every 2-3 business days you need to work extra hard to top up your bitterness.
***
Hi Anon(s),
I'm especially happy about the nominations for the rap line in songwriting, and for a song in Korean and English.
Anon in Ask 2, just as it was last year, I too feel that even if BTS don't win the awards, they've still won. I can't bring myself to get fully into celebrating for them though, because chances are yts are gonna yt. 🤷‍♀️ BTS will eventually be awarded. Whether or not it happens in 2023 is another story.
Anon in Ask 4, whew, have you got it all out of your system?
I don't blame you for feeling that way though. It's true the fact any k-pop stan can even speak about the Grammys in the first place, like the only reason k-pop is even being mentioned anywhere near that notoriously white institution, is because of BTS and BTS only. It's a fact we all know but because this is k-pop where people get offended for pointing out water is wet, it still needs to be said lmao. I did have higher hopes for another group this year because of their Western partner labels, but BTS is still the only Korean group that is objectively too big to ignore, a group that has a whole discography worth of proof to show they should've been fully recognized and awarded by that institution at least 4 years ago. Any groups recognized today or in the future can thank BTS for the hyper-visibility they've brought to the genre and industry. It's really that simple.
Anon in Ask 1, I'm up to my eyeballs in work today but I loved reading how you plan to take care of yourself. It'll take about 48 hours for the dust to settle and then we'll start getting the really hot takes from k-pop commentators and pundits lmaoo. So enjoy this nominations glow to the fullest while it lasts. 💜

Kanye West: no American icon has ever self-destructed so spectacularly
This article is more than 1 month old
Andrew Lawrence
Tumblr media
Sat 29 Oct 2022 03.00 EDT
No longer was West the dorky producer turned rapper agitating to break out of Jay-Z’s shadow. He had become something even bigger: a true star. The only person who could stop Kanye was Kanye – or Ye, as he’s preferred to be known of late.
Now his empire lies in a smoldering heap in the wake of the 45-year-old artist’s October media blitz.
West himself says he lost $2bn in a single daythis week.
First there was the smear campaign against his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, then the White Lives Matter fashion statement in Paris, then his complete transformation into an alt-right puppet. And it crescendoed with West’s fusillade of unprompted antisemitic commentary, starting with him needling the Kushner family during an hourlong Tucker Carlson sit-down in early October, that cost West his diverse portfolio.
Gap, JP Morgan and Creative Artists Agency are among a raft of partners that quickly cut ties. All the while West dug in, claiming on a podcast appearance that Adidas – whom West teamed with after leaving Nike – would never leave him regardless of how many more antisemitic assertions he made.
But a week later, Adidas went their own way too, a move the company reckons cost them $246m in potential fourth-quarter earnings. Overall, West’s Yeezy line accounted for as much as 8% of Adidas’s bottom line. No wonder it took them a week to break up with him.
We’re a long way from the days when a Kanye drop used to mean something else entirely, a deeply immersive sound collage from the vanguard of pop music’s new wave. After years of being typecast as a producer, albeit one who had a hand in Jay-Z’s seminal Blueprint album, West crossed over into emceeing in 2003 with The College Dropout – which didn’t just distinguish him from the gangsta rappers of the era, but made preppy style and nerd idolatry cool. Two years later he consolidated that break with Late Registration, a Billboard blockbuster that marked a sea change in pop music.
West may not have been gangsta in the 50 Cent mold, but he was tough in his own way. He had his own near-death moment, a 2002 car crash that shattered his jaw. During an emergency surgery, a metal plate was inserted into his chin and his jaw was wired shut – a fortunate outcome that nonetheless would disadvantage an aspiring rapper. But West used the experience, rapping about it over a sped-up Chaka Khan hit. That single, Through the Wire, became the lead single of The College Dropout and announced West as a talent who could not be deterred.
Tumblr media
And yet, astonishingly: he nearly survived every controversy until Adidas changed their number and things came to a head this month. Now, with just about all his collaborators gone, West isn’t just off Forbes’ billionaires list. He’s a toxic asset. Not even the rightwing pundit Candace Owens will have him on her show now – and West was supposed to buy the rightwing social network Parler off her chief executive husband. Loyal fans who took West’s antics as judo moves to get out of his apparel brand deals surely must feel let down after hearing West made an unsolicited visit to Skechers’ LA offices and was shooed away. “I don’t think a board of directors in a million months of Sundays would ever allow a business to touch him again,” says Matt Baker, the chief strategy officer at the brand management firm Deutsch NY.
Where West’s rise beat the odds, his downfall beggars belief. No American icon has ever self-destructed so spectacularly – not the actors (Mel Gibson, Isaiah Washington), TV creepers (Matt Lauer, Bill O’Reilly), sports heroes (Michael Vick, Joe Paterno) or even the tabloid targets (Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan). Even Roseanne Barr, who once dressed as Hitler and was finally written off her own TV reboot after a racist one-liner about former White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, didn’t have her fingers in as many pies as West – not only desperate for new partners, but a new divorce attorney, too. Camille Vasquez, the attorney who redeemed Johnny Depp, won’t touch West, either.
It’s only in recent days that West has trialed an apology on Lex Fridman’s podcast, another unoriginal version of the “if I offended” word salad. But it didn’t make things better for the students of his briefly shuttered Donda Academy, or vindicate his tarnishing of George Floyd – or stop him from spouting more offensive rhetoric. But with Ye’s billions reduced to millions and JP Morgan no longer willing to grant him loans against his net worth or otherwise engage the classic rich guy tax avoidance game, West might soon find the only entity willing to engage him is the IRS – and for them, Heartless is more than a West anthem. It’s modus operandi, too.
Kanye West had it all – wealth, power, status, autonomy. But in the end it wasn’t enough. There was no predicting it would come crashing down so dramatically. And yet there’s still no telling how much farther he could fall.

Very confused about your tags on that Kendrick Lamar post. Mind elaborating?
I'm saying that witness testimonies and solid evidence (phone calls, texts, photographs) are a crucial part of effectively exposing someone as a rapist, pedophile, domestic abuser etc in a world where these sorts of things are readily accessible. In the old days, word of mouth was the only way to do this, but not anymore, now we need to put respect on technology for being a means to find the truth, and the truth hasn't revealed itself when it very well should've by now. If he'd committed an act of pedophilia, that victim would have all the incentive to come out about it now, nearly secured backing from the public because everyone is already convinced it’s true and disbelievers are clowned on in rap circles both online and irl. Pedophilia is a coercive and exploitative phenomenon, and this is a good opportunity to prove that anyone can engage in this under the radar, but nothing under the radar has been cited, just an act at a concert (in front of many people) and a few sus bars.
Plus making claims for the sake of clout and moral high ground (possibly the MOST effective tool utilized in the 21st century) trivializes the testimonies of real flesh and blood victims of the past present and future who have gathered and will gather the bravery to step up and speak on their own real accounts (in the cases of Bill Cosby, Kodak Black, R Kelly, etc). I also don't think that pedophilia should be used as a prop for reputation or a "gotcha" in the case of a beef, especially not when it's repeated all flippantly by audiences as a slick bar instead of a recount of someone's trauma like it was in the video I reblogged. Pure dismissal of how serious the issue is, it's reduced it to a meme.
I said that it's weak to come for someone over an unbacked rumor because it is, in the face of the current reality that misinformation runs rampant and everyone is so eager to spread it if it's scandalous about someone popular and can be made into an amusing talking point for pundits who thrive off of cattiness and drama. Labeling Drake as a "certified pedophile" because of some (very real but still unbacked as a tangible pattern of behavior) creepiness towards minors is super lazy, like I said, a cop out for an actual diss on his actual behavior in the real world. Diss tracks always have been so effective because they call out messed up behaviors and events oftentimes with details and names that were previously unknown to the public (think Pusha T's The Story of Adidon for a fantastic recent example), and this one doesn't. I'd be all for the diss if it reflected some tangible actions, but it doesn't, so it's dissatisfying to me that the beef ended on something that has the possibility of being pure slander that's not immediately possible to prove wrong thus becomes a fact. Hope this clears it up.

Jack Grealish’s Euro 2024 Omission: An Oversight
June 6, 2024
Tumblr media
Jack Grealish’s absence from the England squad at Euro 2024 has sparked debate and disappointment among fans and pundits alike. Despite his limited playing time for Manchester City this season, fans should not undervalue Grealish’s unique skill set and creativity.
In his recent cameo against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Grealish showed his ability to unlock defenses and create scoring opportunities. Pep Guardiola praised Grealish’s playmaking abilities, highlighting his impact on the field.
Some may point to his lack of goals in recent matches, but it’s essential to consider the intangible qualities Grealish brings. His presence on the pitch often enhances attacking play and opens up space for teammates.
The decision to exclude Grealish from the final squad raises questions about player selection criteria. New talents have emerged, but Grealish’s experience and unique style could have provided England with an edge.
As the tournament progresses, fans may notice Grealish’s absence more. Creativity and flair are often needed to break down resilient defenses. Gareth Southgate’s decision to overlook Grealish could be a missed opportunity on the international stage.
In football, statistics often dominate discussions. However, it’s crucial to recognize players’ impact beyond numbers. Jack Grealish’s omission from the England squad reminds us that sometimes, a player’s true value lies in the intangibles they bring.Tagged Jack Grealish
