Today is the hidden valley of Thor or Thórsmörks.
I’m getting there by a jeep tour.
It’s quite a bumpy ride getting into the valley. Fortunately the Jeep is well equipped for it, with tires so massive that you need and extra little step ladder just to get inside. It’s well able to traverse the rocky roads and deep fast rivers.
Good thing too- this valley has one of the rivers that’s famous for stranding cars that try to cross it when they shouldn’t.
Due to the surrounding protective mountains there’s a lot of lush greenery here, as well as glacial runoff.

Volcano Huts
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We spent the last two nights in Thorsmork in one of the Volcano Huts. This location has multiple huts spread out over a large camp area and included amenities such as a toaster, a charging port, a camp store, a camp restaurant, and a camp dog who made rounds on the property. We had an entire hut to ourselves on Wednesday night. On Thursday, we were joined by six Icelandic vacationers--I opted to camp instead of having to share a double mattress on an upper bunk. Arna led us through a yoga warm-up on Thursday morning before we set out for our last full day of hiking. By now, we all had an assortment of strains or pulls to nurse along.

Iceland honeymoon day 11 - Fimmvörðuháls hike! Let me lead you through this 25km, 1300m of gained elevation epic day...
Fimmvörðuháls is an area between Skogar and Thorsmork and it took us about 7.5 hours of hike time, 9.5 hours total including snack breaks photo breaks and chat breaks. We passed about 25 waterfalls, 1 volcano, 2 glaciers, and wildly changing landscape - from green hills to lava fields to snow and ice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first 8km is along Waterfall Way, a beautiful section where it feels like you run into another waterfall every few minutes. The sun was shining, the path was easy, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next 5km transports you to very rocky, semi-boring barren land until you reach Baldvinsskali hut, a small hut people can stay in if they split the hike into two days. We met the warden and her friend at the hut and had a nice chat with them. Unfortunately they were looking for the warden's dog, a small 16 year old terrier named Topaz who had gone missing since Tuesday. Topaz had been coming up to the mountain with the warden for the past 9 years and today was the last day before the hut shut down for the season so she was asking everyone to keep an eye out for Topaz. We got her number and a picture of Topaz, but unfortunately no luck ☹️.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the hut you reach the snowy sections! We passed through two snowfields situated amongst a volcanic landscape of black sand/ash, some in funny little pyramid shapes. After the snowfields we went up a rather steep section of thick volcanic ash. Once you get to the top, you get to hike in between/over two glaciers and some of the youngest landscapes on earth. In 2010, the volcano under Eyafjallajokull erupted and laid down new volcanic soil and formed two new mountains, Magni and Modi. We took the little detour to summit Modi and it was super cool! The mountain is crumbly, mostly red in colour, and the rocks are actually really light (but sharp!).
After leaving the volcanic fields, you enter what's probably some of the most jaw-dropping scenery on the hike. It's mostly downhill from here, which makes the knees twinge. There's plenty of walking along ridge lines, admiring the deep green canyons, and using support ropes to help go down the steep sections. But alas, Tumblr only lets me upload 10 pictures per post so this last section in photos will have to come next 😂.

Fourteen years ago I took a turn with my Toyota Yaris towards Þórsmörk, quickly to find out that it wasn't the vehicle suited to reach it. So I turned back... Every time I returned I always wanted properly reach the Icelandic highlands, specially Þórsmörk, but for many reasons things always went another way.
That was until now, and what probably is the most magnificent way to reach it: walking with friends all the way from Landmanalaugar and letting it appear in front of my eyes as we passed over the last hill of the hike.
