For Valentine's Day, here are shipping... not headcanons so much as scenes that I would like to put into fic form but, let's be for real, I'll only ever get around to writing 1 out of 6 of these. So instead let me just tell you how the scenes go!

(Note: They are all silly but they are not all fluffy.)

Henry x Bear:

Henry bringing Bear to his forest (which is actually a spur off the Peel Godred branch line) for the first time circa 1971-ish and being kind of gruffly shy about this because This Is His Heart and he's trying to sound soooo offhand as he mentions that he just likes to visit here sometimes… get away from it all… for the past fifty years cough… and Bear just looking around and having a heart attack at how some roots are literally driving up the track ahead of them and measuring the four inches between them and the foliage and being like HENRY. HENRY I’M SORRY BUT. HOW. HOW IS THIS LEGAL. HOW HAVE YOU NOT CAUSED A FIRE HERE

I guess this one doesn't end on a very romantic note but it does make me laugh.

Edward x BoCo:

This one is even more messed-up but it also makes me laugh. I tend to imagine occasionally even work on a way-too-complicated WIP of Edward and BoCo getting to know each other during the three years before “The Diseasel” and also things on the mainland are, like. Bad. Really, really bad. BoCo is way too busy chronically dealing with stress levels set to 9 out of 10 to in any way acknowledge his growing romantic feelings about Edward…

… until one day when he’s been working further inland for a few days and as he starts returning ‘home’ he hears word that Edward was left in Barrow shed for a day and somehow spent the day out and about on B.R. jobs and BoCo RUSHES back - albeit a quiet, understated sort of way - all but teleports! - he NEEDS to find out RIGHT AWAY if his oh-so-innocent-cinnamon-roll is even still ALIVE :( let alone finding out how bullied he’s been :( only at the end of three hours in a sort of moving heart attack to find Edward at Barrow shed apparently now pals with everyone and swapping tales of Furness past and present with all the worst characters imaginable eating out of his palm and being like oh hello! yes i did get out and about it’s been lovely :) and BoCo trying not to shout in front of everyone I THOUGHT THERE WAS A REAL CHANCE YOU WERE DEAD OR KIDNAPPED AND SENT HALFWAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY BY NOW I CAME PREPARED TO COMMIT MURDER and Edward with an unbroken smile being casually like Oh yes :) Five different diesels tried :) No dw you can see I’m fine haha :) Incidentally at least a few of your brothers would sell you to the Gronk mafia for a corn chip :) yes the ones I’m sharing a chummy laugh with rn :) I had no idea things here were so bad I am putting you under protective custody on Sodor immediately :)

Mavis x Daisy:

Mavis has been down coz things have been so dull.

Daisy comes to her beloved's rescue!

... by throwing the world’s fakest mechanical breakdown at Ffarquhar and being like ‘oh DEAR i am ILL I am FALLING APART i NEED my dearest Mavis to HELP ME WITH THIS ONE MILK TANKER or else my SWERVES will IMPLODE’ and literally every human on scene doing a facepalm.

Mavis has a grand time although - when they manage to swing this journey all the way to Tidmouth Harbour - Mavis shows how much more forward she is about striking up conversations whereas Daisy is actually quite socially anxious (much as she tries to hide it) and winds up getting jealous at Mavis talking to everyone but her.

And then (finally noticing Daisy in a tizzy) Mavis rolls her eyes and kisses her at the same time.

Most everyone whoops and shouts some good-natured razzing. Cranky, however, is all like ‘OY A LITTLE LESS OF THAT IN MY DOCK’

Thomas x Bertie:

Maybe this one is a straight-up headcanon, I dunno. And I think this ship is a QPR. But anyway I like to imagine Bertie swinging all the way out to York to visit Thomas during his stint at the NRM.

It’s a super lovely surprise.

Up to and including Bertie responding to “But how?????” with the world’s smarmiest: “Well, I’m allowed to travel on mainland roads, aren’t I? Roads 1,459 Rails 0 :D”

James x Porter:

This is me, the captain of an empty ship, I know. (It's fun!)

Porter has been screwing with James’s head for fifteen years now by doing Grand Romantic Gestures but with Pokerfaced Watertight Plausible Deniability.

Like if there’s ever a cargo of flowers to go out, he always makes sure James gets it.

He always just so happens to be on James’s track when there are fireworks.

Forever making remarks like “Oh yeah, you go on first, you need your beauty routine” to let James go on and get wash down ahead of him and then bouncing so that James spends the entire time fruitlessly parsing the tone. It’s not biting or mean. It’s not flirtatious or teasing. But it's definitely not quite matter-of-fact. What does he MEAN by it???

No one knows. (Not that James cares!!!!!!!!) Porter, who has intimacy issues, is having way more fun living in James’s head rent-free than he ever would actually making a move on the most difficult and dramatic love interest on the railway (James: Everybody’s Ex™)

… at some point this will get resolved only when James snaps and drags him along on one of his fast freights out of the harbour. For once Porter is flustered (“Whoa! Whoa! James, put me down! I don’t go this fast - ”) and James just laughs, suddenly exhilarated because now he’s finally hauling Porter off and at the end is gonna force him to address all this shit (“C’mon, you’ve played Thomas before, haven’t you? Let’s moooooove -!”)

Introducing the world of TTTE: Sudrian Boys [TTTE: Sudrian Boys AU Worldbuilding, Pt. 1]

Now that I've worked out exactly what I want from my AU, I believe it is finally time to share the lore with all of you (one month after I initially promised it OOPS).

The lore of this world is a bit HEFTY to explain, so I'm breaking it into multiple parts. This part mainly goes over the history and background for my Humanized!TTTE AU, TTTE: Sudrian Boys. In later parts, I plan to cover things like Sudrian vs Non-Sudrian Engine culture, how the engines differ from humans, and more info about how the shapeshifting works in my AU, so stay tuned!

Also! Information regarding specific characters will be included in separate character sheets I will be posting at a later date. I'm also currently working on some fanfics that I hope will expand my AU further. But feel free to ask me any questions you may have!

This is going to be a VERY long post so read on under the cut!

Before we begin, some key things to keep in mind:

I am still actively catching up with the canon source material at this point in time! Thus, aspects of my AU are subject to change as I read/watch more of the source material and incorporate it into my AU.

This AU is primarily based on TV series canon (both model and CGI), as that is what I am primarily familiar with. Some aspects are also taken from the Railway Series to help estimate an approximate timeline of events.

At this current point in time, BWBA is NOT canon in my AU. This is mainly because I have not watched it yet and have no plans to watch it later (with the exception of the Michael White episodes that everyone says are good). The episode "A Shed for Edward" from Season 21 is also NOT canon in my AU. This is to say that in my AU, Edward and Henry still live in Tidmouth. It's my AU. I do what I want.

On that note, Thomas and the Magic Railroad is partially canon in my AU. I haven't gone back to re-watch the movie yet (I do plan to at a later date), so I'm going purely off of memory and what I hear other people say about it. Because of this, I've decided to basically just take parts that I like and leave behind parts that I don't. In regards to the canonicity of the film itself, I consider it as a dream Thomas had (that may or may not have actually happend. It'll all make sense later).

With the exception of Philip the Diesel Boxcab, ALL of the engines are adults in my AU. Yes, that includes Thomas and Percy.

With that out of the way, let's start at The Beginning:

A long time ago, when humans were designing the first steam engines, a young faerie fell in love with them. Her true name is beyond mortal comprehension, but engines of today refer to her as Lady (or alternatively, the Lady of Legend).

Though fae are usually associated with nature, this faerie in particular was fascinated by machines and the ingenuity of mankind. And so she used her magic gold dust to breathe life into the machines that she loved so much.

And thus she became Lady, Goddess of Steam Engines.

For many years, engines and humans lived together in harmony. The engines found purpose in being useful, and humans were able to travel longer distances and distribute supplies amongst each other. It was a mutually beneficial relationship.

But then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked dieselization happened.

Lady watched in horror as humanity turned their backs on the steam engines that worked so hard for them. In increasingly larger numbers, engines were getting scrapped for as petty reasons as "not being useful enough". In an effort to protect her beloved machines, Lady imbued them with more powerful magic.

As much as Lady wanted to, the Fae Court wouldn't allow creations of man to be taken in mass to the fae realm. So if she couldn't offer her engines salvation, Lady would at least give them a means of escape.

By around 1960, as steam was getting phased out, Lady blessed her beloved machines with the ability to shapeshift. If an engine ever had a desire to leave the rails, all they had to do was imagine themselves doing so and they could walk the Earth in a human-like form. This would allow them live lives completely independent from mankind. Being "really useful" was no longer a requirement to have a right to live, now they could simply exist and pursue goals of their own choosing just as any human could.

For steam engines all around the world, shapeshifting became a secret and closely guarded practice that they would only discuss amongst each other. Humans were not to be made aware of this under any circumstances.

Unfortunately, even after Lady bestowed the gift of shapeshifting upon her engines, hundreds of them were still killed under the cutter's torch. Steam engines are proud entities after all, and many of them preferred to die upon their rails than to live in hiding as something foreign. And since shapeshifting was such a closely guarded practice, not every engine who may have wanted a way out was able to be taught.

Even so, there were still reports circulating of engines vanishing from scrapyards without a trace, almost as if by magic. These were the engines that managed to escape and are now living secretly amongst humans to this day.

Fast Forward many, many decades later. We return to the Island of Sodor:

It is now the late 2010s to mid 2020s. The entire Island of Sodor basically runs as a giant heritage railway.

The NWR is currently run by Sir Topham Hat III, who is at the strapping young age of 83. (I saw this tweet from someone who asked Christopher Awdry if STH III is still running the railway and he said yes so we're going with that.) STH III loves his engines very much, which is why he has no plans on retiring any time soon. Still, he has STH IV shadow him closely in order to prepare him to take over the railway some day.

Because of the success of both The Railway Series books and the Thomas and Friends TV show, tourists flock from all over the world to get a look at the famous engines. Plus, being one of the few places to still have steam engines in operation (and so many of them in fact), you can count on many of the tourists being train enthusiasts too.

Basically, the engines of Sodor are all treated like celebrities. They are FAMOUS and are generally adored by the public. Whenever they go anywhere, you can count on someone knowing their names.

And because of just how many tourists come to Sodor every year, the economy is thriving and the engines are all very, very busy. Everything is pretty idyllic.

But sometimes, prosperity can get pretty boring.

And now, our story begins:

As with many Sudrian Shenanigans, everything starts with Thomas the Tank Engine.

One night, after Thomas delivers passengers to a carnival, he makes a wish to leave life on the rails, even if only for just one night.

As much as Thomas loves working on his branch line, delivering goods and passengers from place to place, and meeting tourists, doing the same routine for literal DECADES can get a little dull.

While waiting for his driver and fireman to return from a short break, Thomas let his mind wander. He imagined himself as a human person taking part in the festivities with the passengers he just delivered. In doing so, Thomas accidentally activated the dormant shapeshifting magic Lady had blessed him with many years ago.

When Thomas opened his eyes, he was literally much closer to his rails than he had ever been. The station platform was much higher up. And Annie and Clarabel were much bigger than he remembered. Thomas had accidentally turned himself into a small human man, just like he had seen in his imagination.

He freaked out a little at first. When they returned, his driver and fireman didn't recognize him. It was only after Thomas started going off about things that only he would know, details about events that happened decades ago, before they were born and had only heard about in stories, that they realized that this small human figure really was Thomas the Tank Engine.

They called Sir Topham Hatt III at once, explaining the situation. And while baffling and unbelievable, the truth was right before their eyes. They were at a loss for what to do, especially since Thomas didn't know how to turn back yet. They concluded to allow Thomas to enjoy the festival for now, let Edward take the passengers home that night, and have Thomas stay with STH's family until he could figure out how to return to normal.

While scary at first, Thomas did enjoy the festival that night. And he went home with STH in Annie and Clarabel. He got to see the island from a new perspective, and he very much enjoyed that.

STH III made Thomas's driver and fireman promise to keep this a secret for now until they could figure out what happened. But that ultimately didn't matter because Thomas went to say "hello" to Edward that night. By the next sunrise, every engine on the island heard exactly what happened to Thomas. Some told their crew, but most weren't believed. Even some of the engines didn't believe each other. But at the very least, every engine on the island knew something strange was afoot.

The news eventually reached Donald and Douglas, who swiftly made their way to Tidmouth Sheds. Coincidentally, STH was bringing Human!Thomas to Tidmouth to inform the rest of the Steam Team about what had happened.

It is at this moment that Donald and Douglas reveal that they knew about shifting for decades. It was how they managed to get to the island under the guise that there would only be one of them. They would take turns, one traveling as an engine while the other hid in their cab. The reason they both appeared on the island as engines is because they hoped the controller would be kind enough to keep them both (and he was!). If it hadn't worked out, they would have run away together as humans. Since things worked out in their favor, they didn't see a point in shapeshifting again. But now that their secret was out, they needed to keep it safe.

Donald and Douglas taught the Steam Team how to shapeshift, and the engines continued to teach each other until basically every engine on the island knew how to switch between the two forms comfortably. In exchange, however, only a limited number of humans could know about engine shifting. These include STH III, STH IV, and the engines' drivers and firemen. Basically, only those who really needed to know.

Nowadays, STH gives the engines a little extra time off during the day to explore their new forms. The Steam Team also has an apartment where they can live together as humans if they choose. Within a few months, most of the engines have gotten in the habit of shifting back and forth, exploring their world and learning new things about themselves.

Now in a new perspective, the adventures continue. 😉

GISELLE GRESLEY (14)

mentors: rebecca and gordon

- really arrogant and stubborn

- her and jamila really need to sit tf down💀

- shes kind to only a certain amount of people

- the most narcissistic person on this team

- always thinks shes right, and will fight you if you think otherwise

- she looks down on shorter, younger, older, and people who dont think shes the most radiant and beautiful person on sodor (almost everyone)

- has a room full of pictures of herself

- like raquelle, but more flawed

NIALL SPENCER (13)

- the chill sibling

- argues with his sister ALOT.

- hes very adventurous, and loves cats

- HE IS THE MOST SENSITIVE BTCH ON THIS TEAM. like bro why do u get so mad when someone slightly changes their tone towards you??

- he actually enjoys seeing his sister get beat with the broom by their mom

EMMANUEL SAINSBURY (13)

- people consider him to be the justin bieber of sodor, people scream every single time he passes by

- according to the people of sodor, hes the most handsome member of the team

- no.1 edith defender (one time he actually jumped giselle when she was getting way too out of hand w her insults , to the point where emily had to step in to stop him from breaking her neck)

- he can be very bossy and disrespectful, but is quick to apologise for his behaviour

HELENA PAYNE (14)

mentor: henry

- the most introverted person on the TT team

- shes actually suuuuper paranoid, and is scared of everyone and everything

- shes very insecure of her height

- she really likes anne of green gables and anything related to it

JOHANNA “JO” MALONE (11)

mentor: percy

- the youngest of the TT team

- some people say shes cute, others say shes the most annoying girl on the team

- shes very smart for her age, but no one actually listens to whatever plan or strategy she comes up with

- nobody takes her seriously because of how young she is

HAYLEY DAVIS (13)

- not exactly a member of the TT team, shes just an honorary member

- shes a part of it because sir topham hatt told the og steam team(mentors) to include her in it (“she has no friends and is almost out of time, please just give her this opportunity so she can die in peace.” - sir hatt)

- she has an illness that prevents her from doing things like running, exersicing, and working, and shes practically dying

- she can still do things like walk, talk, and eat by herself; but overtime her ability to do these things would decrease

- she got the illness from her mom, who is DEAD!!!!

- gets wounded very easily (everything at her house is safety proofed, like all the corners are rounded and stuff)

8/10 - Crystals

After reuniting with his mother and meeting his father for the first time in May, 6 months later, James's mother circums to severe internal magic deprivation. James is heart broken, feeling severely guilty for not coming home sooner and is deep in mourning.

James's father, Knightingale Hughes, is equally as distraught but is more concerned for his son, he arranges the funeral for his beloved and asks James for the funeral traditions. So James carves a natural block of lapis lazuli into a headstone and they set it on top of the mountain that Gale's castle is under.

James spends the next few days with his father and then takes a leave from work for a few months. The other Tidmouth members take time to comfort James, especially Edward who preoccupied James with some meaning full tasks that he needed help with, same with Gordon, Henry, Thomas, Percy and even Sir Topham once they realised it helped keep James out of a funk.

But later, not long before James is due to come back to work, who should roll onto Sodor like a celebrity but James's dad. Once Gale comes in to check on his son, James is almost immediately outed as being a vampire hybrid, and a prince at that. Harper almost goes over the moon with excitement, while the others are rather surprised but it now made a lot more sense when they thought about it.

(A/N: Okay, I may now be a little behind in the rest of inktober since uni had jumped ahead and snatched my attention. So there is more to come, but it might take a little slower.)

AusterityEngine: So uh... Has anyone else realised that the BWBA update for the main cast is, rather ironically, incredibly sexist? Like, they booted Edward and Henry off the Steam Team motivated solely by the fact that they are male characters and had to make way for new female members, which by definition is sexist. Anyone else seeing this or just me?

ThomasTheorist: It's called Positive discrimination, not all discrimination is bad.

AusterityEngine: No. Discrimination is bad full stop.

ThomasTheorist: Well thats a rather narrow view. Positive discrimination is the practice of favouring individuals belonging to a group known to have been discriminated against previously, in this case, women and people of colour.

AusterityEngine: There was nothing saying new female characters can't join the Steam Team. What kicking Edward and Henry out for Nia and Rebecca does is send out the message that it's okay to exclude them BECAUSE they're guys.

PSideplates: Yes you have realized something the rest of us knew from Day 1. Congrats.

justang_G: Wilbert Awdry believed that all locomotives should be male and carriages should be female. This is sexist. I think the TV show are handling the idea of female engines awfully. I don't think that they shouldn't have them, but don't kick out other characters for them.

WDonut04: Too bad no one noticed this. Imagine if Emily, the only female member before Nia and Rebecca, got kicked off the steam team, then there would be a huge media backlash because removing a woman is considered sexist. But the media doesn't care for Edward and Henry unless it has to do with a certain episode that shall not be named.

Streakofscarlet: Totally 100% in support of normalizing a gender-balanced main cast in kids shows, but you just KNOW that there'd be an outrage over it if it was Emily who got kicked out.

PSideplates: Yeah if the Steam Team was mostly female and they tried to replace some of them with guys there'd be outrage.

TheDukeyofSodor: Always thought this decision was Mattel being sexist. Like instead of replacing males with females, have them coexist and make a bigger team (still dumbfounded how they didn't use the ep to boot Edward to instead expand the sheds and cast).

flyingtardis: I mean, you don't even need to expand the sheds, there's a perfectly good 4 track shed just off to the left (facing the turntable from the sheds) of the sheds that can hold a few engines, 8 small tank engines or 4 small 1 mid and 1 tender, but it would free up at least 2 berths for new Steam Team members.

TheDukeyofSodor: It's been mostly a goods shed and if anything makes the character seem more secondary rather than main since they're literally pushed to the side.

flyingtardis: But it's not about "pushing to the side" its about freeing space up so you have essentially a mainline shed and a Miscellaneous shed for engines like Toby and Stanley and anyone we actually see at Knapford regularly, its not like its a completely separate shed like Knapford sheds.

Cinderthomtroop: Well more or less I suppose, They wanted more female lead characters and in order to make room they had to boot two of the men out to make way for the new women, instead of uh, I don't know... expanding the sheds. Edward and Henry were the least relevant to the series, that's why Nia and Rebecca took their places.

DavisZ021: I do. That's my issue with Nia and Rebecca replacing Edward and Henry. I think that they should have done a Calling All Engines! and make the shed bigger to let Nia and Rebecca in without taking away from the group.

mrtrackmaster99: Thanos is working at Mattel and it had to be perfectly balanced. 3 boys - Gordon, James and Percy. 3 girls - Nia, Rebecca and Emily, and Thomas.

crikey_fell: I still think they should've gradually added either existing or new female characters to be promoted to the main cast to bring it to an equal male to female ratio and remodel Tidmouth sheds to the RWS version.

RichardBlue1963: Tis what we call, "a double-standard", we see it everywhere, people will have no issue calling Anakin and Luke Mary-Sues but will defend Rey at all costs for instance. I hate it and it has to stop, its a damaging mindset.

TheFlatwagon: You know this Edward and Henry fiasco would have never happened if Sir Topham Hatt the cAPitaList wHOre just installed two extra berths at Tidmouth Sheds for the two new female members.

steakandcake1: OMG YOURE RIGHT. Imagine if mainstream finds out about this regarding Nia and Rebecca joining the main cast solely due to pleasing the feminists and Mattel is forced to bring back Edward and Henry.

steamtrainboy55: Couldn't they just remodel Tidmouth with more berths? Maybe then Rosie could be a part of the Steam Team?

TidmouthStudios: Literally everyone knew about this sexism shit since like last year. I mean, Edward and Henry leaving to make way for Nia and Rebecca in order to satisfy the SJWs is one of the reasons why people DON'T like BWBA. I don't see the reason of bringing this stuff about sexism and female representation back up again when we've actually had minimal peace in the fandom recently.

PlebPerson: You’re right, but I also think it’s sexist to have female main characters just for the sake of having female main characters. Especially since Nia and Rebecca are just generic nice girls.

kezzstar24: I don't understand why they couldn't have kept my beloved Edward and Henry and just added extra female main cast characters. Why boot any at all? 😢😢

Danielthewrap: It's because of what a "teach the children about complete male and female equality" company did just to butt in.

NWRGresley1942: They could’ve at least kicked James out of the Steam Team since he was a show off and brought back Edward and Henry since they could’ve rerendered Tidmouth Sheds to a 10 berth shed and brought Rosie into Tidmouth or they could get rid of the Steam Team altogether.

B33TSk33T: I would say yes. But... no one bats an eye twords male sexism. It isn’t seen as “sexist”. A more accurate term for sexism would be “anti-womanist” You get what I mean?
