SMGS at Vistabella. February 27th, 2019
The 2nd round of this season’s Eclectic competition took place at Vistabella, with 40 members and four guests taking part. A shotgun start meant an early rise for all and plenty of work prior to teeing off for the organising committee members. Fine weather and a course in good condition, with pretty slick greens, led to some excellent scoring, not overly affected by some tough pin positions. Roger Brierley (24 handicap) managed the day’s best round, putting together 42 points, closely followed by guest Graham Jordan who, playing off of 7 and never having previously visited the course, returned 41 points. Gerald Turner took the much sought after Abacus prize, receiving a voucher for a free golf lesson from course professional Adrian Rudge for his efforts. Tony Smale (39) and Phil de Lacy (37) took the Gold and Silver category prizes respectively, with them winning having absolutely nothing to do with their filling the current Captain and Vice-Captain roles. Mick Roscoe goes to the top of the Eclectic leaderboard, beating Bob Eyland on countback, with both having a combined score of 46 points after 2 rounds. Five players are hot on their heels with 45 points. The next round will be played towards the end of April. The day’s winning results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Chris Hamblett (37), 4th Norman Padmore (38 on CB), 3rd Bob Eyland (38 on CB), 2nd Mick Roscoe (38 on CB) and 1st, with the day’s best score of 42 points, Roger Brierley. Silver Category: 5th Pete Cunniff (33 on CB), 4th Adrian Roberts (33 on CB), 3rd Paddy Diskin (34 on CB), 2nd Kyrre Skarsmoen (34 on CB) and 1st Phil de Lacy with 37 points. Gold Category: 5th Norman Cahill (36 on CB), 4th Barry Lane (36 on CB), 3rd Graeme Forbes (36 on CB), 2nd Mark Preston (37) and 1st Tony Smale with 39 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by MoneyCorp): Hole 2 Norman Padmore, Hole 7 Phil de Lacy, Hole 11 Barry Roehrig, Hole 15 John Trehy. Abacus (sponsored by Vistabella golf professional Adrian Rudge): Gerald Turner Best Guests: Graham Jordan (41) beating Paul Dulson (31) in to 2nd place. Our thanks go to all Vistabella staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at La Torre, and on following weeks at El Plantio and Alenda. San Miguel Golf Society at La Finca 5th September, 2018
It was good to be back at an old favourite this week, and although the greens were still recovering from their recent hollow tining, the course was generally in good nick. The weather was hot but also humid and this took its toll on one of our committee members who decided to walk. Nine holes was all he could muster before the ‘smell of sweat’ took over and he gave up. Special mention here for our octogenarian Norman McBride (83) who not only completed 18 holes but scored a magnificent 31 points. The scoring was a little down on recent weeks, perhaps reflecting that this is a long course – mind you no one told Krazy Kyrre our big-hitting, if somewhat erratic, Norwegian – his radar was obviously locked in today and not only did he better par (one of only 2 players) – he did it with 42 points. There was some keen competition amongst a good field of 42 and scores were close at the top of the three divisions. Best guests      1st John Urqhart – 2nd Peter Webster Nearest the pin      hole 3 - Steve Higgins      hole 6 – Kev Albright      hole 13 – Chris Hamblett    hole 16 - Adrian Roberts. Bronze division  - 1st - John Trehy 33   2nd - Norman McBride 31  3rd - Brian Butler 29 Silver Division  -  1st - Kyrre Skrasmoen 42  2nd  - Mike Kaylor 36 3rd – Brian Butler 29 Gold Division – 1st – Captain Smale 35  2nd – Ivan Hanak 34 c/b   3rd – Steve Higgins 34 c/b Our thanks to La Cascada Bar for their hospitality and very delicious refreshments. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Tony Smale a call on 628227687. The next three games will be at La Serena, Alenda and Las Colinas.

San Miguel Golf Society at Vistabella GOLF March 21st, 2018
Weather conditions that one normally associates with links golf on the Baltic greeted the 43 members and one guest at Vistabella. Woolly hats were on show, a rare sight in these parts. However, the day brightened and the cold breeze abated enough to see jackets and jumpers being removed. Greens, as ever, were slick and well prepared. Buggies not being allowed on the front nine fairways slowed up proceedings somewhat but it was evident that that the new layout needs protection. Tricky pin positions added to the difficulty of building a good score. Given the circumstances, the points amassed by prize-winners were praiseworthy. The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Keith Stevenson (37 on CB), 3rd John Trehy (37), 2nd Charlie Harkin (38) and 1st Norman McBride (40) Silver Category: 4th Ken Flaherty (33), 3rd Kevin Albright (34), 2nd Phil De Lacy (36), and 1st Hugh Reilly (37) Gold Category: 4th Mike Frankish (34), 3rd Tony Smale (35), 2nd Bjorn Petersson (36), and 1st Humphrey Kelleher (38) Nearest the pins on the par 3’s to Kyree Skarsmoen, Mike Freeman, Chris Hamlett and Norman Cahill. Mike Inns won the Abacus…again. This week, the Abacus was once more sponsored by Adrian Rudge, golf professional at Vistabella. The wonderful prize of a free golf lesson voucher will hopefully mean that Mike’s monopoly of the Abacus will end soon. In the matchplay competition, Hugh Reilly and Brian Mulligan won 4 and 2 against Norman Cahill and Mike Jordan. Our thanks to the staff at Vistabella for their contribution to the day. Bar service was excellent and the reasonably priced drinks were greatly appreciated by all. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Tony Smale a call on 628227687 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at Roda.
