Labor Law Violations Against the Consumer Need to Buy
By Robert Turnau, Grand Valley State University, Class of 2019
April 15, 2019
Tumblr media
Everyone loves shopping, but more people love saving money, and shopping and saving money are conflicting actions. This is where many companies try and find the optimal solution between those to actions. Take an item that you own, whether it is an article of clothing, a video game console, or a toy, most likely you will find a “Made in China” sticker or engraving on that product. The reason that many companies outsource there manufacturing to China and other states in southeast Asia is the cost of labor. This has led many Asian factories to take advantages of their labor force. Even though the consumer pays to buy the product, but the workers in these factories pay the ultimate price.
Throughout China and southeast Asia, worker abuse is commonplace to see in many of these factories. Many of these factories and companies pay their employees terrible rates, deny workers health benefits even though these workers are often exposed to dangerous machines and chemicals, such as lead, cadmium and mercury, and finally, some of these factories are exploiting child labor. [1] In addition to the terrible labor conditions that these workers face, the quality of these products is terrible. Many consumers from all round the world have found out that the toys they are buying for their children are coated in lead. [1] If a toy is coated with lead, lead poisoning can be a high concern. Children can often get lead poisoning from products from China, because they will put the toy or their fingers in their mouth, exposing themselves to lead. This can be especially dangerous to children under the age of six. [2] Lead poisoning will affect almost every system in the body, and can cause irreversible damage, and if the levels of lead in the blood is high enough it could potentially cause death. [3]
Many of these factories in southeast Asia that are exploiting their workers are suppliers to dozens of western corporations, here is a few examples, Wal-Mart, Disney, Nike, Gap, and Dell. These corporations were accused of exploiting labor, some of the exploiting practices include, the use of child labor, paying workers less than minimum wage, and forcing workers to work sixteen-hour work days. [1] Many of these violations would have been left unseen, however some labor groups had to smuggle out photographs, pay stubs, and other explicit evidence. Many of these workers come from impoverished regions in China such as the Guizhou Province, and will work twelve-hours a day, six days a week, for only $120 to $200 a month. [1] One former Huanya employee stated that many workers suffered skin rashes due to working with gold powders, and other workers were forced to sign papers that stated they were “volunteering” to work overtime. [1]
The International Labor Organization, ITO, is a United Nation agency that tries to bring together governments, employers, and workers, to set labor standards, and to promote decent work for all women and men. Throughout the near hundred years that this agency has been around, it has aimed to promote rights for the employer, encourage employment opportunities, and enhance protection for work related issues. [4] Some of the issues that the ITO tries to address is child labor and international labor standards on occupational safety and health. There have been several conventions that are aimed to achieve occupational safety, one such example is the Occupational Safety and Health Convention of 1981. In addition, there has been a fundamental convention for setting a minimum age for workers, the C138 – Minimum Age Convention, 1973. For both Conventions, China is a signing party and has ratified both aforementioned Conventions, which means they must abide by the Conventions.
Article Three, Section One of the C138 - Minimum Age Convention, 1973 (No. 138) states, the minimum age for admission to any type of employment or work which by its nature or the circumstances in which it is carried out is likely to jeopardize the health, safety or morals of young persons shall not be less than 18 years.[5] Some of the violations that have been occurring in China were having children use lead paint to paint products. The effects of using lead paints can be highly dangerous if the paint somehow got into the body of the workers. In addition, the former Huanya employee that stated that some workers suffered from skin rashes because of working with gold powders. [1] Even that employee did not specify the age of these effected workers, but there could be a chance that workers under the age of eighteen can be exposed to these dangerous materials.
Article Four, Section Two of the C155 – Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) states, the aim of the policy shall be to prevent accidents and injury to health arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of work, by minimizing, so far as is reasonably practicable, the causes of hazards inherent in the working environment.[6] Like mentioned before with the use of lead paints and the gold powder, the materials that are being used in these factories are causing health risks for these workers. In addition to using dangerous materials, but these long work days can be a serious health risk and can pose a danger to other workers.
Even though China has violated these Conventions, there has been no backlash or charges filed against the Chinese government. However, for those corporation that have been accused of violating labor laws, some of the conditions in these factories have improved, but overall the conditions in these factories are still dire.

Past years HIV/AIDS has had a rocky road by being a mysterious disease that infected everyone taking people's lives rapidly this pandemic could never turn back now by becoming a global infection. HIV/AIDS has impacted the human race this disease infecting thousands of lives should recognized as a necessary concern among us, this particular disease shouldn't be acknowledged as a mockery disease it is important to be educated about HIV/AIDS.  Every year new infections occur therefore it is time to send the message about getting educated about this disease, learning about HIV/AIDS in education will bring benefits to preventing this virus .  In educating about how HIV/AIDS is passed on among people, which is when you introduce how to protect yourself this will  advise how to undertake this situation. Condoms will be introduced to teach adolescent's ways for safe sex and even advising them to prevent this virus well, educating about HIV/AIDS is greatly necessary to improve the lives' of people who are positive with the virus. Importantly, its needed to educate the people who are already have the disease to be more informed about to treat it and as well as  not spreading  the virus. Not only teens should be informed about these concerns of HIV/AIDS but adults should be involved about this global issue therefore adults should engage themselves in this particular epidemic by getting educated on it. This educational topic is indeed needed because everyone is at risk for HIV/AIDS which is why teens need to be informed before it's too late. However, teaching this topic is a challenge to introduce a virus as a class special expertise will be needed to teach these classes to inform the public about this disease this will be greatly effective for the students involved. On the other hand, the lives' of the people who are affected in this disease should not be victimized upon this they do not deserve to be treated different because of this virus  given that they already are going through so much undergoing  the treatment of the virus is too crucial to stack on top with a fearful judgment is too much to handle. Involving the discrimination of the pandemic which impacts their lives'  should be taught in the education of HIV/AIDS, this will teach how to not treat victims of this disease in hatred it is not fair for anyone go through. With this in mind people who are infected should also seek more information about the disease  and advise them to still have a healthy happy life even if you do have HIV/AIDS, these classes/programs will direct patients to not live in the shadows but to be informed about their treatment and as well and encouragement to be live a contented life. Additionally, a big step to take to prevent more HIV/AIDS cases is to get tested it is preferred to do a HIV test to detect if you are at risk to contract the virus but it does not hurt to prevent this virus it is time to raise up the awareness for HIV/AIDS in education!

This blog will give you a good understanding of How to Choose the Right Low-Code App Development Platform Before starting an evaluation exercise to select the right low-code app development platform, we should know what end result is planned to achieve. If you are a citizen developer then the immediate focus is how easy is the user interface, how quickly I can scale my solution, and will the new platform reduce my dependency on IT.Similarly, if you are a start-up, your focus is more on technical and product requirements whether your solution is adaptable in the market or can you integrate with enterprise applications like ERP and CRM. is there a product road map defined by the platform owner so you would know what solutions look like to meet the competitions. So define your purpose and select the right parameter to compare and pick the app development platform.Use our 5 steps DIY process to select and evaluate leading no-code/low-code platforms in the market. "how to choose the right low-code app development platform" 1. Identify Requirements and Key Features2. Select Low-Code Platform for Evaluation3. Analyze and Score Selected Platform for Each Requirement4. Prioritize All Requirements And Assign Weightage5. Evaluate All Platforms With Relative Scoring And RatingSTEP 1 # Identify Requirements and Key FeaturesHow to identify parameters to select low-code platformProduct RequirementOne of the critical criteria to define when evaluating any low-code platform. Organizations should know which category of the platform is needed to develop niche solutions for their business like eCommerce, Database, AI, Automation etc.Functional RequirementSelecting broad parameters leads to near to perfect evaluation of the platform. Organizations need to visualize Tomorrow Vs Today to focus on business issues and challenges. The idea is not to replace your enterprise software but to quickly develop and deploy new business solutions. Technical RequirementFor most of us, Technical requirements are a high priority. Before selecting the right platform, an organization, or individual what to know whether the product has capabilities like core technical system architecture, flexibility, scalability, integrations, performance, security, etc.Total Cost of OwnershipOne of the critical criteria to define when evaluating any low-code platform. Organizations should know which category of the platform is needed to develop niche solutions for their business like eCommerce, Database, AI, Automation, etc. But remember you are selecting a no-code platform so this should be cost-effective compare to existing platform.Sampling some key features and requirementsHere is the list of various features and high-level requirements that anyone can use as a sample to start the evaluation process. This list provides a baseline to define your business need and some leading best practices. STEP 2 # Select No-Code/Low-Code App Development Platform for EvaluationIn the first step, we identified all key requirements and features that are good enough to evaluate any low-code platform or application. Now as in this step, Let’s pick some good platforms for our comparison and evaluation. How to find and select low-code platformsUse our search platform for quick select and compare top platforms across range of platformsFind out if platform provide free registration or has free trial available Most of the platforms have either free license or free trail available for 30 days period so make sure you signup and start your analysisThere are 3 way you can start playing with application or platform. a) Create fresh application and learn all features and functions or b) pick any existing template and play around to save time or c) or download any existing solution from marketplace if available to have better understanding of platformsTake your notes and make sure that you have your check list completed as per your step 1Analyze each platforms on
4 key parameters like product, functional, technical and TCOSTEP 3 # Analyze and Score Selected Platform for Each RequirementsWhen you reach to step 3 , by this time you have evaluation template ready to capture the scores. We have identified all requirements and features that we want to evaluate. We have also identified top 5 low-code platforms that we believe are relevant for our purpose. Now in stage 3 , we will have to score each platforms based on our research and assessment that we performed in step 2.How to Define Scoring ScaleScoring scale is an important sub step to define how will you score or rank each platform against the features/requirements. You can build your own definitions based on purpose and need. Here is a sample that we used in our evaluation process to score each platforms.Platform ScoringAssign this scale to each features in evaluation template for each platforms that you want to select for comparison. Score each features against the platform using range of 5 to 1 where 5 is the best and 1 being the lowest. Repeat this step for all features and platforms.Assignation of score for each features for all platforms will lead to quantitative analysis of your research and assessment conducted in step 2. Now you have score for all platforms, there are many ways we can calculate the score to arrive at score on how each platform is doing against each feature and requirement. Since we want to be quick and easy so decided to average out the scores for all features to arrive at final score of any requirement like product, functional, technical.Calculate TCO # Need different approach to calculate the total cost of ownership. Collect all license related price for each platforms. Every platform has different way of structuring the license and will not be apple to apple comparison but best way is to define what minimum features you need and which category of license can fulfill this need. You may also want to calculate indirect cost and future cost for initial understanding of TCO.STEP 4 #  Prioritize All Requirements And Assign WeightageThis is an important step for platform evaluation to prioritize all requirements while assigning the weightage. There are different method available to assign weightage from simple to complex. The approach that taken in our evaluation method is simple and quick. How to Assign WeightageWeightage can be assigned at 2 levels.at requirement levelProductFunctionalTechnicalat features levelease of useuser workflowsarchitectureWe have assigned weightage at requirements level to simply the approach but this can also be done at features level. Just ensure you do this correctly to qualify each platforms with some ranking based on score given in step 3.Final ScoringAs said earlier , this is an important step as it delivers final score for each platform at requirements level and also helps to derive final ranking of each platform. STEP 5 # Evaluate All Platforms With Relative Scoring And RatingTime to evaluate the great work done in last 4 steps. One platform is clearly the winner based on quantitative analysis that template has helped to conclude but this is not the end of your assessment. The real work start now where you revisit to evaluate all platforms while doing relative comparison and also qualitative comparison. How to Evaluate You already have winner in terms of numbers scored by each platforms. But let’s spend some more time to understand how each platform is doing with respect to features and requirement prioritization. This evaluation step takes back to your first question what is the purpose of your assessment. For example: An organization wants to use no-code platform for their citizen developers so they would still see which platform is better in terms of ease of use , design principle etc. At the end you have to make a judgment based on your own need that will help you to pick a right platform.Role of TCOTCO cannot be seen separately or part of requirements. TCO goes with combination of platform requirements vs cost going to be spent.
Winner of evaluation assessment may be at top in terms of meeting the requirement but high at cost front also. So organization may want to see if 2nd in row is more cost effective solution. Compare your top 3 winners with the total cost of ownership to conclude final platform of your choice.Disclosure:  The opinions on this page are of CodeResist and we try our best to keep things fair and balanced, in order to help you to make the best option. You may also want to calculate indirect cost and future cost for initial understanding of TCO. https://youtu.be/JZCcULWMzDA STEP 4 #  Prioritize All Requirements And Assign WeightageThis is an important step for platform evaluation to prioritize all requirements while assigning the weightage. Just ensure you do this correctly to qualify each platforms with some ranking based on score given in step 3.Final ScoringAs said earlier , this is an important step as it delivers final score for each platform at requirements level and also helps to derive final ranking of each platform. https://youtu.be/G9XnPNX5f9k STEP 5 # Evaluate All Platforms With Relative Scoring And RatingTime to evaluate the great work done in last 4 steps. At the end you have to make a judgment based on your own need that will help you to pick a right platform.
Role of TCOTCO cannot be seen separately or part of requirements. TCO goes with combination of platform requirements vs cost going to be spent. Winner of evaluation assessment may be at top in terms of meeting the requirement but high at cost front also. So organization may want to see if 2nd in row is more cost effective solution. Compare your top 3 winners with the total cost of ownership to conclude final platform of your choice. https://youtu.be/blLzlf7AiH8Disclosure:  The opinions on this page are of CodeResist and we try our best to keep things fair and balanced, in order to help you to make the best option.
