Being a young guy in the old car hobby can be difficult at times. Respect is hard to earn when most like-minded individuals are twice your age and have a master’s degree from the school of hard knocks. Then there are guys like Daniel Boshears, a relatively young engine builder from Flintstone, Georgia who can walk into a room full of old-timers and strike up a conversation with anyone. It doesn’t take long to understand that Daniel is fully immersed in all things automotive and that maybe he belongs to a different generation despite his age. His attachment to the glory days of muscle cars is obvious when he pulls up in his 1965 Dodge Coronet, which is built in a vintage street racer style. You might call this a Day-Two build, but Daniel says it’s more like a Day-Three build, as it has some 1960’s elements with a 1970’s style engine.

For Daniel, it doesn’t require a lot of effort to rewind the clock. In fact, his greatest influencers, mentors, and friends were running the roads in similar cars during the era that he chose to replicate. Daniel’s father, Virgil, is a life-long car enthusiast, so Daniel was no stranger to the hobby. However, he didn’t get a chance to really turn wrenches until the age of 15, when a local Mopar guru, Eugene Smith allowed him to work on some of his vehicles. Daniel built his first engine, a Mopar 383, at the age of 16.

Daniel admits that driving on bias ply tires can be a sacrifice, but it’s worth it for the right look. Seeing this car rolling down the highway is like a trip back in time.

The work Daniel performed under the watchful eye of Eugene gave him the opportunity to meet folks like Ted Stephens of Stephens Performance, which eventually led to meeting Tim Wellborn. Daniel still handles engine and mechanical work for Wellborn’s Musclecar Museum. His work also led to a job with Blair Patrick, a premier Ford engine builder in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. Another pivotal point in his career was getting involved in the Engine Masters Challenge, during his time with Blair Patrick. The connections made at the Engine Masters Challenge turned into great friends and business partners. Obviously, Daniel’s journey has been a long one, and he’s just getting started with his own shop, Boshears Engines. While he’s happy to build a late-model Hemi or LS engine for a customer, he’d rather be wrenching on an old Mopar engine from the 1960’s or 1970’s, like the rowdy small block in his Coronet.

Dressed in 1970’s Moroso gold anodized attire, the 379ci small block looks right at home. With 11.72:1 compression and a mechanical flat tappet camshaft, this engine makes a beautiful noise through Hooker headers, painted white of course, and Hooker Max Flow mufflers. It made 537 horsepower in the Engine Masters Challenge.

Daniel built the engine specifically for the Engine Masters Challenge. He didn’t have a real plan for it otherwise, but it found a home in the Coronet after it returned home from the competition. It’s a small block Mopar, but it has some serious tricks inside. It all starts with a Glidden block and crankshaft, previously used in Pro Stock applications when Bob Glidden went to the Plymouth camp in 1979 and 1980. Daniel handled most of the machine work, and got some assistance from Swafford Competition in Rome, Georgia. Daniel, along with Matt Knabb assembled the short block using a set of Molnar 6.125-inch connecting rods and custom CP flattop pistons, creating an 11.72:1 compression ratio when combined with the 62cc combustion chambers in the Air Wolf aluminum cylinder heads. With 220cc CNC ported intake runners and 2.08- and 1.60-inch valves, the cylinder heads are real performers. Transferring motion from the custom-grind Bullet mechanical flat tappet camshaft is a set of vintage Crane 1.6 rockers, which were donated by Randy Malik. Camshaft specs are 249/253 degrees of duration at 0.050-inch lift, with a max lift of 0.600-inch and a lobe separation angle of 106 degrees.

One of Daniel’s favorite features on the car is the Keltronic electric tachometer. It’s a unique piece, compared to the more common dash-mounted, cable-drive tachometers of the 1970’s.

On top of the small block Chrysler is a Holley intake manifold that Daniel picked up for $50 at a swap meet. Another hand-me-down item is the carburetor, which he got from his longtime mentor Eugene Smith. Daniel knows his way around an old Holley and built the 750cfm carburetor with custom metering blocks, and a few internal tricks for maximum power and drivability. Ignition is controlled by a stock distributor, which is assisted by a hidden MSD 7AL box. The Chrysler “orange box” on the firewall is strictly for decoration. In the Engine Masters Challenge, the 379ci small block made 537 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. Daniel feels comfortable turning it 7,800 rpm and has had it twisted up on a few occasions.

Power is put to the ground through an 8-3/4 rear end, packed with 3.91:1 gears and a Sure Grip differential. Calvert Racing leaf springs and CalTracs help in the traction department, as the skinny M&H 900-15 slicks need all the help they can get. Daniel got the vintage-style Super Stock slicks and chrome 15×7-inch steel wheels from Coker Tire, while the vintage 15×4-inch Cragar S/S wheels and Goodyear bias ply front runners came from the car’s previous owner, Jimmy Moore. Daniel bought the car as a roller, but convinced Jimmy to sell him the Cragars because he knew they’d be a perfect fit for his Day-Two vision.

While the dark blue paint still has a glossy finish, it’s certainly showing its age upon closer inspection. The body is very solid, so Daniel’s plan is to leave it as-is and continue thrashing on it.

Ron Tucker is responsible for the 727 Torqueflite transmission, which is a fresh rebuild with A&A components. It has a PTC 10-inch torque converter that stalls to 3,600 rpm on the line and Daniel selects gears with a Cheetah shifter, attached to a homemade mount. From the driver’s seat, Daniel grips a ’65 wood grain wheel, which came from Carl Sexton’s collection of Mopar parts. The interior is showing some age, with mostly original vinyl throughout, but Daniel suspects the seat cover has been replaced at some point. He replaced the carpet, mainly to freshen up the car’s appearance.

In terms of exterior, Daniel has left the body and paint in its as-found condition. The only modification he made was the A990 style scoop, installed by Mark Coates at ABM Restorations. The car has zero rust, but the paint and trim have seen better days. It’s all part of the car’s character, and Daniel doesn’t intend to change that any time soon. The stance and mis-matched wheels add to the old school look, and the car’s exhaust note even sounds “vintage”, if you can imagine a rowdy small block with mechanical lifters and pipes that run all the way to the back bumper.

The M&H Racemaster slicks look like they belong in the 1960’s, but they’re actually new reproductions available from Coker Tire. The 9.00-15 sizing is appropriate for stock bodied muscle cars, as its tall and narrow design allows for excellent fitment.

Even though it has a stout small block under the hood, the Coronet has great street manners. It’s not obnoxiously loud inside, and it cruises nicely at 55 miles per hour. Long highway trips can be a little strenuous with the 3.91:1 gears and no overdrive, but it’s perfectly tolerable for running around town, or to the local cruise in. Daniel intends to tweak on the tune up, and keep beating on it, but his “someday” plans include a K-head Hemi build to take the old Coronet to the next level. For now, the car serves as a way to fill in the generation gap between Daniel and his Mopar brethren, and provide plenty of thrills along the way.
