Shradh (Pitru Paksha)
Ancestral Blessings, Date, Rituals, and Significance
In the Hindu tradition, various customs, fasts, and festivals are celebrated, among which Shradh (Pitru Paksha) holds a significant place. This period is dedicated to paying homage to ancestors, ensuring their peace and salvation through specific rituals.
Significance of Shradh
Shradh rituals have been practiced since the Vedic period with the purpose of honoring deceased ancestors and praying for their souls’ satisfaction. It is believed that offering water during Shradh brings peace to the ancestors’ souls. According to Hindu belief, human life is a precious gift attained after many cycles of birth and rebirth, and performing Shradh is considered a son’s duty to his ancestors.
Importance of Pitru Paksha
Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period from the full moon day of Bhadrapada month to the new moon day of Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar. It is believed that during this time, ancestors visit the earth to receive offerings. By performing Shradh with devotion during Pitru Paksha, the souls of ancestors attain peace, and family members receive their blessings, mitigating any effects of Pitra Dosh (ancestral debt).
Rituals of Shradh
On the designated Shradh date, individuals wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes. They pledge to perform Shradh and donate for the peace of their ancestors. Satvik food is prepared, and offerings are made to the deceased family member’s photograph. The rituals include:
Tarpan: Offering water to ancestors.
Pind Daan: Offering rice balls mixed with sesame seeds.
Feeding Brahmins: Serving food to Brahmins and seeking their blessings.
Offering food to animals: Feeding cows, crows, dogs, and other creatures.
Performing Shradh
Traditionally, the eldest son performs Shradh. In the absence of a son, the wife, elder brother, grandson, great-grandson, daughter-in-law, or nephew can perform the rituals. The rituals are considered especially meritorious when performed at holy places (Teertha Kshetras).
Dates for Pitru Paksha 2024

Shradh (Pitru Paksha): Ancestral Blessings, Date, Rituals, and Significance
Overview of Shradh
In Hindu tradition, the period known as Pitru Paksha is dedicated to performing rituals for deceased ancestors, seeking their blessings, and ensuring the peace of their souls. Shradh rituals can be performed on the Amavasya (new moon) of each month, but the most significant period for these rituals is the fortnight from the full moon of the Bhadrapada month to the new moon of the Ashwin month. This period is called Pitru Paksha, a time when it is believed that ancestors visit Earth to receive offerings from their descendants.
Significance of Shradh and Pitru Paksha
Shradh has been practiced since the Vedic period, emphasizing the importance of honoring ancestors. According to Hindu beliefs, a soul goes through 8.4 million life forms before attaining a human birth. Performing Shradh rituals is a son’s duty, and it is believed that these rituals bring peace to the souls of ancestors, helping them attain salvation and alleviating Pitra Dosh (ancestral affliction) from the family. The rituals include offering water (Tarpan), food, and prayers to satisfy the souls of the ancestors.
Pitru Paksha in 2024
In 2024, Pitru Paksha begins on September 17 and ends on October 2. The specific dates and corresponding Tithis (lunar days) are as follows:
September 17, 2024 (Tuesday): Purnima Shraddha (Bhadrapada, Shukla Purnima)
September 18, 2024 (Wednesday): Pratipada Shraddha (Ashwina, Krishna Pratipada)
September 19, 2024 (Thursday): Dwitiya Shraddha (Ashwina, Krishna Dwitiya)
September 20, 2024 (Friday): Tritiya Shraddha (Ashwina, Krishna Tritiya)

October 1, 2024 (Tuesday): Chaturdashi Shraddha (Ashwina, Krishna Chaturdashi)
October 2, 2024 (Wednesday): Sarva Pitru Amavasya (Ashwina, Krishna Amavasya)
Who Can Perform Shradh?
Traditionally, Shradh is performed by the eldest son. If there is no son, the responsibility falls on the wife, followed by the elder brother, grandson, great-grandson, daughter-in-law, or nephew. These rituals ensure that ancestors’ souls are satisfied and bless the family.
Rituals of Shradh
Preparation: Begin by waking up before sunrise, taking a bath, and wearing clean clothes. Take a pledge to perform Shradh with full devotion.
Fasting and Cooking: Observe a fast and prepare satvik (pure and vegetarian) food with devotion.
Offering Food: Place food on a plate in front of the deceased ancestor’s photo and invite them to partake with prayers and folded hands.
Feeding a Brahmin: Feed a Brahmin to his heart’s content and offer donations. Seek his blessings after the meal.
Animal Feeding: Offer Gogras (cow’s food) to cows and Panchagras to crows, dogs, and other animals.
Pitru Paksha Rituals at Shree Krishnayan Gauraksha
At Shree Krishnayan Gauraksha in Haridwar, experienced priests conduct Shradh Puja with deep respect to Vedic traditions. Services include:
Tirth Shradh & Tarpan: Performed on the banks of the Ganga to elevate the deceased soul.
Yagya & Pooja: Detailed rituals for peace and happiness of the deceased if the death occurred over a year ago.
Godaan: Donation of cows, considered the most powerful offering, removing sins and obstacles.
Bhandara: Feeding 11 saints or Brahmins for the peace of the departed soul.
Gaugrass: Feeding cows green grass, wheat bran, and jaggery to satisfy the souls of ancestors.
Conclusion
Performing Shradh during Pitru Paksha is a profound act of devotion, bringing peace to ancestors and prosperity to the living family. Observing these rituals with sincerity ensures the blessings of the departed, enhancing the spiritual and material well-being of the family.

"Happy Akshaya Tritiya (Akha Teej) 2020 To All Of You".🙏 Akshaya Tritiya which is also known as Akha Teej is highly auspicious and holy day for Hindu communities. It falls during Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the month of Vaishakha. Akshaya Tritiya falling on a Rohini Nakshatra day with Wednesday is considered very auspicious. The word Akshaya (अक्षय) means never diminishing. Hence the benefits of doing any Japa, Yajna, Pitra-Tarpan, Dan-Punya on this day never diminish and remain with the person forever. Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring good luck and success. Most people purchase Gold on this day as it is believed that buying Gold on Akshaya Tritiya brings prosperity and more wealth in coming future. Being Akshaya day it is believed that Gold, bought on this day, will never diminish and would continue to grow or appreciate. Akshaya Tritiya day is ruled by God Vishnu who is the preserver God in the Hindu Trinity. According to Hindu mythology Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya day. Usually Akshaya Tritiya and Parashurama Jayanti, birthday anniversary of 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, falls on the same day but depending on staring time of Tritiya Tithi Parashurama Jayanti might fall one day before Akshaya Tritiya day. Vedic astrologers also consider Askshay Tritiya an auspicious day free from all malefic effects. As per Hindu Electional Astrology three lunar days, Yugadi, Akshaya Tritiya and Vijay Dashami don't need any Muhurta to start or perform any auspicious work as these three days are free from all malefic effects.
