The answers to the Brain Teaser Tuesday riddles:
The Missing Dollar: The missing dollar is not actually missing. The guests initially paid a total of $30 for the room. When they received $5 back from the bellboy, they effectively paid $25 for the room. The bellboy's $2 should be subtracted from the $5 he kept, making it a total of $3 returned to the guests ($1 each). So, the guests effectively paid $27 for the room ($25 for the room and $2 to the bellboy), and there's no missing dollar.
The Unusual Suspects: The murderer is C. If C is telling the truth, then D is lying, which would make C the murderer. But if C is lying, then D is telling the truth, which would also make C the murderer. So, C is the only one consistent with the rule the murderer always lies.
The Bridge Crossing: The fastest time for all four people to cross the bridge is 17 minutes. Here's the optimal sequence:
The two slowest people (10 and 5 minutes) cross together, taking 10 minutes.
The fastest person (1 minute) goes back with the flashlight, taking 1 minute.
The two next slowest people (2 and 5 minutes) cross together again, taking 5 minutes.
The slowest person (10 minutes) goes back with the flashlight, taking 10 minutes.
Finally, the two fastest people (1 and 2 minutes) cross together, taking 2 minutes.
This totals to 10 + 1 + 5 + 10 + 2 = 28 minutes, but they can all cross in 17 minutes if the first pair crosses together at the start.
