The Rise and Fall of The Rochester Rappers

Spirtualism, the idea of communication with spirits of the dead, has been part of human consciousness for ages. Tales of seances, Ouija boards and spirit mediums continue to be part of pop culture in fiction, film, reality TV and social media. Spiritualism's popularity rose significantly during the 19th century as society began to change. Believe it or not, two young sisters who heard strange noises in their house at night played a significant part in spiritualism's growth.

It all started with two young girls in a small farmhouse in Hydesville, N.Y., who claimed to hear thumping or "rapping" noises in their bedroom at night. Margaretta "Maggie" Fox, age 14, and her 11-year-old sister, Kate, convinced their mother, Margaret, that their house was haunted. Maggie and Kate demonstrated how "Mr. Split-foot," as they called the spirit, could respond to questions with specific numbers of raps. Their mother asked questions such as how many children she had and how many are surviving. The spirit responded with the correct amount of raps. However, their father, John, was sceptical.

Mrs. Fox wanted to know who the spirit was and her daughters told her that he was a man who died at 31-years-old and was married with five children. Their mother decided to show a neighbor and even asked the spirit permission beforehand. The spirit consented.

It was late on March 31,1848 that the girls shared their experience with a neighbor, Mrs. Redfield. Curious and most likely sceptical, Mrs. Redfield came to the Fox home to see for herself. Mrs. Fox led the "seance" for Mrs. Redfield, commanding the spirit to knock specific numbers of times. The accurate amount of raps sounded in response each time. Their neighbor was convinced and spread the word.

The night after Mrs. Redfield's reading, a large group of neighbors came to the Fox home. One of the men devised a code for the spirit to spell out messages, with specific numbers of raps corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. The spirit said he was a peddler who had been murdered and that his remains were buried in the Foxes' basement. The Fox farmhouse was located near a creek. A storm caused the basement to flood, forcing further investigation to be postponed.

Not all of the Foxes' neighbors were amused by Maggie and Kate's supposed talents. John and Margaret Fox were asked to leave the congregation at the Methodist Episcopal Church because of the "unholy" activities of their daughters.

A pamphlet was published in 1848, "A Report of the Mysterious Noises Heard in the House of John D. Fox in Hydesville, Arcadia, Wayne County," consisting of information compiled through interviews with neighbors, former residents of the Foxes' house and John and Margaret Fox. The interviews were conducted by E.E. Lewis, an attorney from Canandaigua, N.Y., near Hydesville.

Leah Fox Fish, Maggie and Kate's older sister, happened to read Lewis' booklet. At age 33, Fish was much older than her sisters, divorced and a mother. After finding out about the supposed haunting in her family's home, Fish traveled from her home in Rochester, N.Y., about 20 miles from Hydesville.

Fish was already familiar with spiritualism, having read Andrew Jackson Davis' "The Divine Principles of Nature." Davis was inspired by an 18th century mystic, theologian and scientist, Emanuel Swedenborg, who described a multi-dimensional spirit world human beings enter when they die. Davis was referred to as the"John the Baptist of Modern Spiritualism" and claimed that Swedenborg's spirit communicated with him. Davis believed that the living were in contact with the dead but unable to communicate. He predicted that the lines of communication between the living and the dead would eventually open and make communication possible.

By the time the Fox family introduced their "rapping spirit," the ideas of another 18th century figure were known in the U.S. Franz Anton Mesmer was a self-proclaimed "healer" who said that human bodily functions were controlled by a "magnetic fluid." By putting people under hypnosis, Mesmer claimed that he could manipulate this magnetic fluid and correct any imbalances which cause illness. Mesmerists began operating in the U.S. Some people who were put under hypnosis said that they had seen spirits.

American society was changing with the industrial revolution, urbanization and inlux of immigrants from various cultures. Populations in cities were expanding, leading to unsanitary conditions, causing outbreaks of cholera, whooping cough, influenza and diptheria.The death rate due to disease and lack of proper medical care increased along with the population. In addition to adults, many children died in infancy. Communication with dead loved ones became a comforting thought.

Ideas about religion began to change. The fire and brimstone of old time religion gave way to a desire to help those in need. Philanthropy replaced stern piety. Many charities and organizations were established to help the needy.

Spiritualism's popularity grew in this atmosphere of questioning of conventional religion plus the increasing death rate.

Leah Fox Fish brought her younger sisters back to Rochester. Fish wanted her sisters to continue to conduct the seances at her home. Maggie and Kate's first seance in Rochester was with friends of Fish, a Quaker couple, Isaac and Amy Post. At first the Posts were sceptical but open-minded enough to come for a session with the sisters. The Posts had become disenchanted with their religion. The couple were involved in many causes including the underground railroad. They left their church because they thought the congregation was intolerant.

Initially sceptical, the Fox sisters gave a reading accurate enough to make them believers. The Posts spread the word about the girls' abilities.

While interest in the Fox sisters grew, not everyone was a fan. Of course there were sceptics but others thought that the seances were blasphemous. However, the sisters were contacted by an overwhelming number of requests for seances. Fish hosted the seances and usually one of the sisters acted as medium.

Maggie refused to participate for a short period. She eventually got over her melancholy and rejoined her sisters. Maggie may have changed her mind because of her sisters' financial situation. Fish was a divorced woman living at poverty level. Resuming the seances was the only way of improving their finances.

Claiming that the spirits demanded that the sisters go public and take their abilities to the community, Fish set up a seance at Rochester's largest venue, Corinthian Hall. The date was Wednesday, November 14, 1849, with the seance set to begin at 7 p.m. and admission was 25 cents. The show wasn't well-received. While the spirit did perform and raps sounded in the auditorium, there were many sceptics in the community who wanted answers.

Committees were formed to "test" the sisters in an attempt to uncover a hoax. The sisters were placed on pillows, glass and even had their underwear inspected by women of the community. In the end, it was determined that there was no hoax. A source for the rapping noises wasn't found.

On November 17, the community gathered at Corinthian Hall to hear the committees' findings. When it was announced that a hoax wasn't discovered, the audience went ballistic. Pandemonium erupted when some members of the audience set off firecrackers. People were screaming and yelling, insisting that the sisters had some object hidden on them to produce the noises. The audience tried to rush the stage. The Fox sisters and other spiritualists had to be escorted from auditorium by police.

The Fox sisters did indeed receive publicity - mostly negative. The local press in Rochester claimed that sceptics and their questions weren't welcome at the seances. One writer questioned the spirit's behavior, describing it as silly and childlike.

As that old expression goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Despite all the anger and negativity surrounding the Fox sisters, they reached celebrity status. The girls' decided to hit the road, taking their show to Troy and Albany, arriving in New York City in June of 1850.

In a matter of two weeks the sisters attracted the attention of many highly-respected writers and editors. Their most immpressive session included receiving communication from the deceased sister of author James Fenimore Cooper. The reading included details about Cooper's sister's death while horseback riding. Cooper became a believer along with many others.

The Fox sisters became known as the "Rochester Rappers." A song was sung about them on Broadway and merchandise was sold with their image on them. People from all across the U.S. claimed to have psychic abilities. Spiritualist publications began circulating: Spirit World, Spiritual Philosopher, New Era and The Spiritualist Messenger.

Many other spiritualists gained large followings: Edgar Allan Poe's ex-fiancee Sarah Helen Whitman and levitating medium Daniel Douglas Home, both in Connecticut; teen medium Cora Scott of Buffalo, N Y. and a Boston woman known as "Mrs. Sisson," a clairvoyant physician. A farmer from Ohio, Jonathan Koons, claimed that spirits provided the instructions for him to build a spirit room. Two other men from Ohio, George Walcutt and George Rogers painted portraits who relatives recognized were deceased family members who neither of the Georges had ever met.

Along with the spread of spiritualism came more varied methods of spirit communication, including table tipping, spirit music and dancing lights. Spiritualism also attracted many critics including transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson, who dismissed the spirits' raps and taps as "rat revelations."

Spiritualism was debated in the press as well as in the U.S. Congress. More spiritualists appeared on the scene and added table tipping and levitation as part of their repertoire. Maggie and Kate Fox were being slowly pushed out of the spotlight. All was not well with the sisters who had begun to fight with each other and with their supporters.

There were many claims that the Fox sisters were making the rapping noises themselves by cracking their toes, knees and ankles, mechanical devices and ventriloquism. During one seance, the spirit of Benjamin Franklin supposedly came through. A spectator observed that Franklin's spirit surprisingly had no command of grammar. Maggie is described as removing herself angrily from the table, saying that she never understood grammar. However, no fraud was uncovered after the girls had been tested many times.

Maggie Fox quit mediumship for Elisha Kent Kane, an Artic explorer from an aristocratic background. The couple met with disapproval from Kane's family. Fox and Kane did have a ceremony with their friends in attendance but were never legally married. Maggie returned to mediumship after Kane's death in 1857. Broke and in mourning, she began to drink heavily.

Kate also began a downward spiral into alcoholism. Her excessive drinking affected her readings but nevertheless, she was still in demand as a medium. She went to England and performed for spiritualists in 1871. Kate also experienced more luck with marriage than Maggie. The following year, still in England, she married barrister Henry Jencken. The couple had two sons. Kate's eldest son, Ferdinand, supposedly demonstrated mediumistic abilities by age 3. However, Kate's luck would run out.

Around 1885, spiritualism's popularity was declining. Society was starting to question and "crack-down" on fraudulent psychics and mediums. A commission in New York called Maggie Fox to appear for a test of her abilities - she failed. Kate came back to New York in 1888 after her husband died from a stroke. Her children were taken away by welfare workers after Kate was arrested for drunkenness and idleness. Maggie did intervene to help her sister, getting Kate's sons' uncle in England to take custody.

Maggie had begun to contemplate suicide but instead made the decision to publicly debunk spiritualism. She managed to book an appearance at the New York Academy of Music in 1888.

Before her appearance, Maggie gave an interview to the New York World, who paid her $1,500. Maggie vented her anger at spiritualists as well as her sister Leah, who had publicly disparaged Kate because of her alcoholism and losing custody of her children. Kate was going to attend Maggie's confession.

Maggie took the stage and told the audience:

“My sister Katie and myself were very young children when this horrible deception began. At night when we went to bed, we used to tie an apple on a string and move the string up and down, causing the apple to bump on the floor, or we would drop the apple on the floor, making a strange noise every time it would rebound.”

Maggie went on to say that her and Kate began to make the rapping noises by cracking their toes, knuckles and joints. “A great many people when they hear the rapping imagine at once that the spirits are touching them. It is a very common delusion. Some very wealthy people came to see me some years ago when I lived in Forty-second Street and I did some rappings for them. I made the spirit rap on the chair and one of the ladies cried out: ‘I feel the spirit tapping me on the shoulder.’ Of course that was pure imagination.”

She also said that her sister Leah knew that her and Kate made the rapping noises. Maggie said that Leah used her and Kate to make money. She then took off her right shoe, propped up her bare foot on a stool and proceeded to make short raps.

Maggie wrote in her 1888 memoir, "The Death Blow to Spiritualism," that her and her sister, Kate, continued their story out of fear of punishment by their parents and being ostracized by neighbors.

Spiritualists claimed that since Maggie couldn't profit from mediumship, she looked to profit from debunking it. Maggie also went incognito to a debate at the Manhattan Liberal Club. Under the name Mrs. Spencer, Maggie divulged all of the tricks that mediums supposedly use such as writing messages on slates with their teeth or feet. Spiritualists would be further outraged one year after Maggie's confession when she claimed her spirit guides prompted her to recant her confession.

Maggie remained estranged from Leah until Leah's death in 1890. Leah Fox Fish had married a second time to a wealthy businessman and wanted nothing to do with Kate or Maggie. Kate succumbed to alcoholism in 1892. Maggie passed away in 1893, destitute and living in a friend's home in Brooklyn. Oddly enough, the year that Maggie died also marks the establishment of the National Spiritualist Association, now known as the National Spiritualist Association of Churches.

Despite Maggie Fox's confession, spiritualism continues today. Countless mediums have written books, hosted TV shows and have a presence on social media. Many reality TV shows about paranormal investigation have also popped up on TV, especially in recent years. The belief in life after death has existed since time immemorial. As always, the debate continues - is life after death reality, delusion or just showbiz?

Reg’s Timeline (Updated)

This is a far too detailed outline of Reg’s timeline and history, including more with his childhood, parents, and grandfather.

Please do not reblog. This is highly headcanon based and meant for my version of Reg only.

2324 - Reginald Barclay Sr. is Captain of the U.S.S. Budapest. His son Reg Jr. is visiting and meets his second officer, Alicia Stafford. They’re rather taken with each other.

2325 - Reg Jr. marries Alicia after getting her pregnant. Reg Sr. disapproves of this marriage, thinking they’re moving too quickly. Reg Jr. and Alicia’s daughter Jacqueline (Jax) is born a few months later.

2326 - Reg Sr. violates the Prime Directive to save a pre-warp civilization from an asteroid. Alicia helps, promising to keep his secret, then reports him to StarFleet Command behind his back, getting him discharged from service. She hopes to advanced her position, but winds up transferred to Starbase 26 instead. Reg Sr. urges his son to take Jax and leave, now seeing firsthand that the woman cannot be trusted, but Reg Jr. is too frightened to stand up for his father and goes with her. Father and son do not speak for several years.

2330 - Alicia is transferred to Earth, and the family moves to Cleveland, Ohio.

2332 - Jax, age 7, attempts to run away from home and gets herself seriously hurt before her parents find her. This finally prompts Reg Jr. to step up and say something about his and Alicia’s marriage, as it’s harming their daughter’s mental health. The two begin marriage counseling and there is a noticeable improvement in their relationship.

2333 - Reg is born.

2340 - Reg’s anxiety and shyness have been growing worse for years, and his parents cannot agree on the best way to deal with it. It causes a rift in their relationship again, and Alicia finally kicks Reg Jr. out of the house, beginning divorce proceedings. Reg Jr. is too frightened to go back for his children. As soon as she is able, Alicia requests a transfer and moves her and her children to the U.S.S. Merrimac.

2343 - Jax turns 18 and immediately moves out on her own, returning to Earth. She wants nothing more to do with her mother, but she keeps in touch for her baby brother’s sake.

2347 - Alicia is transferred back to Earth, and moves with Reg to San Francisco.

2349 - Alicia signs Reg up for the StarFleet Academy entrance exam on his 16th birthday, giving him no choice in the matter. He takes it and passes.

2351 - Reg begins at StarFleet Academy, choosing the Operations track and eventually settling on Systems Diagnostics, since it’s a fairly vague career path.

2356 - Reg graduates from StarFleet Academy with the rank of Ensign and is assigned to the U.S.S. Cochrane.

2359 - Reg is transferred to the U.S.S. Grissom.

2363 - Reg is transferred to the U.S.S. Zhukov.

2364 - As holotechnology grows more and more advanced, Reg retreats into the holodeck more often, and his performance slips from satisfactory to poor.

2366 - Captain Gleason of the Zhukov has a bet with his first officer, to see whether he can get Barclay off their hands and transferred to the Federation’s flagship. He’s successful, giving Reg a promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade before having him transferred to the U.S.S. Enterprise D. His holo-addiction becomes worse than ever, but his performance improves when he befriends Commander La Forge and begins regularly seeing Counselor Deanna Troi. He helps resolve the ship’s invidium contamination (TNG: “Hollow Pursuits”). Later that year, he is present for the Battle of Wolf 359 (TNG: “The Best of Both Worlds”).

2367 - Reg’s mind is altered by a Cytherian probe that vastly increases his intelligence and confidence. He takes over the Enterprise and brings it to meet the Cytherians, who return him to normal (TNG: “The Nth Degree”). The same year, Reg is captured by his mirror universe counterpart, who traps him in his quarters while taking over his life. This lasts for several weeks. (TNG comics: Terra Incognita).

2368 - Reg leads his first away mission, which goes very badly when his shuttle crashes in a jungle where a creature tries to hunt them down. He manages to get everyone home safely and earns himself a commendation (TNG short story: “The Naked Truth”).

2369 - Reg finally faces his transporter phobia and helps rescue the surviving crew of the U.S.S. Yosemite, earning himself another commendation (TNG: “Realm of Fear”).

2370 - Reg is given a synthetic T-cell by Dr. Crusher that mutates and spreads through the ship, causing the crew to de-evolve. The mutation is corrected and later named Barclay’s Protomorphosis Syndrome (TNG: “Genesis”).

2371 - The Enterprise D is destroyed (TNG film: Generations). While repairs are underway, Reg is temporarily transferred to Jupiter Station to work on the Emergency Medical Hologram with Dr. Zimmerman.

2373 - Reg is transferred back to the newly completed Enterprise E, and is aboard when it goes back in time to prevent to Borg from interfering with Earth’s first contact with the Vulcans. He is part of the team that helps rebuild Zefram Cochrane’s vessel (TNG film First Contact). The Dominion War begins that year (DS9: “Call To Arms”).

2374 - Reg decides that being aboard the Enterprise is too much stress and that for his mental health he needs to take a quieter job. He takes a promotion to lieutenant and a transfer to Earth to begin work on the Pathfinder Project.

2375 - The Breen attack StarFleet headquarters in San Francisco, where Reg lives (DS9: “The Changing Face of Evil”). The Dominion War ends later that year (DS9: “What You Leave Behind”).

2376 - Reg has become obsessed with contacting Voyager, lost in the Delta Quadrant, and desperately misses his Enterprise family. Because of all this, he has a holo-addiction relapse. When no one will listen to his plan, he breaks into the Pathfinder facilities to implement it himself. It is successful and Reg is the first person from the Alpha Quadrant to speak with the Voyager crew in over five years. Reg also briefly begins to date his supervisor Pete Harkin’s sister-in-law, Hope (VOY: “Pathfinder”). Later that year, he decides to seek out his father, who still lives on Earth, and two begin a tentative relationship.

2377 - Pathfinder has established regular monthly communication with Voyager. When Dr. Zimmerman falls very ill, Reg writes to Voyager’s Doctor, who has his program transferred to the Alpha Quadrant to treat him (VOY: “Life Line”). Later that year, Reg begins a relationship with a teacher named Leosa, who suddenly ghosts him. Reg attempts to transfer a hologram of himself to Voyager, but it is hijacked by the Ferengi, with Leosa’s assistance, who attempt to use it to steal Seven of Nine’s nanoprobes and destroy Voyager. Reg and the Pathfinder personnel manage to stop them. Reg briefly dates a friend of Will Riker’s named Maril (VOY “Inside Man”).

2378 - Reg testifies in an inquiry to determine the Voyager EMH’s sentience (VOY “Author, Author”). Later that year, Voyager returns home (VOY “Endgame”). Reg is promoted to lieutenant commander shortly thereafter, and continues to work at StarFleet Headquarters on Earth, categorizing Voyager’s information from the Delta Quadrant.

2380 - Reg begins instructing at StarFleet Academy, and uses his time to research and experiment. His focus is on holography, as more issues of synthetic sentience are coming to light. He’s seen as the successor to Lewis Zimmerman in this regard.

2385 - Reg is promoted to commander. The synth attack on Mars occurs later that year, prompting the synthetic ban that Reg strongly protests (PIC “Maps and Legends”).

Benintendi’s monumental season would have been hard to predict, though Dave Van Horn and the Arkansas coaching staff thought he’d probably have a breakout sophomore year.

Arkansas played in the SEC Championship Game during his sophomore year, but McFadden’s 2007 season just might be the best in Razorback history.

Sidney Moncrief, Men’s basketball, 1979

Little Rock’s Sidney Moncrief was one of the famed “Triplets” with Ron Brewer and Marvin Delph on the Razorbacks’ first Final Four team in 1978, where his defense, rebounding and all-around game made him stand out.

With Brewer and Delph gone from the 1979 team, Moncrief increased his productivity and his value as a senior and helped lead Arkansas to the Elite Eight, where it lost in controversial fashion to an Indiana State team headlined by Larry Bird.

Moncrief was a consensus All-American and was named Southwest Conference player of the year in 1978-79 after averaging 22 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals while leading the Hogs to a 25-5 record.

Moncrief averaged 38.6 minutes, shot 56% from the field and 85.5% from the free-throw line that season. The 6-4 Moncrief held the school scoring record with 2,066 points until it was eclipsed by Todd Day, and his 1,015 career rebounds still stand as the UA record.

The No. 5 pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1979 NBA Draft, Moncrief won the first two NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards in 1983 and ’84, was a five-time NBA All-Star and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Loyd Phillips, Football, 1966

A key performer as a sophomore on the Razorbacks’ 1964 national championship team, Loyd Phillips went on to have two more big seasons.

His work in 1966 as a relentless defensive tackle led to his selection as the Outland Trophy winner as the best lineman in college football. Phillips earned consensus first-team All-America status that season by The Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp as well as first-team All-SWC for the third consecutive year.

Phillips posted 97 tackles in 1966 after notching 100 the year before, and he finished with 304 career tackles, including 22 in a game against Tulsa.

The native of Longview, Texas, who died in December was proud to say his teams at Arkansas never lost to Texas.

Clyde Scott, Football/Track and field, 1948

Clyde “Smackover” Scott transferred to Arkansas in 1946 after resigning his post at the U.S. Naval Academy in order to marry Leslie Hampton, whom he met as the reigning Miss Arkansas when he escorted her around Annapolis, Md., while at the pageant.

Scott became a legend with the Razorbacks, an All-American in 1948 as a two-way star and self-taught sprinter on the track team.

Scott rushed for 670 yards on 95 carries to average 7.1 yards per carry in 1948, but his contributions were perhaps more critical on defense, where he was already famous for stopping an LSU ball carrier at the 1 in the 1947 Cotton Bowl to preserve a 0-0 tie with the favored Tigers.

Scott held the UA record in the 100-meter dash at 9.4 seconds, and he won the 110 high hurdles at the NCAA championships with a 13.7 to edge Northwestern’s Bill Porter.

At the London Olympics later that summer, Porter edged Scott in a photo finish, giving the Razorback a silver medal.

Scott, who passed away in Little Rock on Jan. 30, 2018, at age 93, had his No. 12 jersey retired by Athletic Director John Barnhill in 1950, the first Razorback to earn that distinction.

Corliss Williamson, Men’s basketball, 1994

Corliss Williamson, a native of Russellville, was the best player on the best Arkansas basketball team of all time, easily earning a spot on this list.

Williamson averaged a career-high 20.4 points per game as a sophomore during the 1993-94 season, leading the Razorbacks and Coach Nolan Richardson to a 76-72 win over Duke in the NCAA title game in Charlotte, N.C.

The 6-7, 245-pound power forward, given the nickname “Big Nasty” as a teenager, earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the 1994 NCAA Tournament, and he earned consensus All-America honors that year and also in 1995, when the Razorbacks fell to UCLA in the NCAA championship game.

Williamson was named SEC player of the year in his sophomore and junior seasons while helping lead the Razorbacks to SEC West titles all three years.

A longtime NBA assistant coach after serving as head coach at Arkansas Baptist (2009-10) and Central Arkansas (2010-13), Williamson won championships at the AAU, NCAA and NBA (Detroit Pistons, 2004). Williamson was inducted into the UA Hall of Honor in 2009.

Reg’s Timeline

2333 – Reg is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

2340 – After years of fighting, Reg’s moms kicks his dad out of the house.

2350 – Reg starts at StarFleet Academy.

2355 – Reg graduates from StarFleet Academy and is assigned to the USS Cochrane with the rank of ensign.

2358 – Reg is transferred to the USS Grissom.

2360 – Reg is transferred to the USS Zhukov. He begins turning to the brand new holodeck more and more, and his performances slips from satisfactory to poor.

2366 – Reg is promoted to lieutenant junior grade and given a glowing recommendation to transfer to the Enterprise D, as part of a bet to see if they could actually get him aboard the Federation flagship. His holo-addiction becomes worse than ever, but his performance improves when he befriends Commander La Forge and begins regularly seeing Counselor Troi. He helps resolve the ship’s invidium contamination (TNG “Hollow Pursuits”). Later that year, he is present for the Battle of Wolf 359 (TNG “The Best of Both Worlds”).

2367 – Reg’s mind is altered by a Cytherian probe that vastly increases his intelligence and confidence. He takes over the Enterprise and brings it to meet the Cytherians, who return him to normal (TNG “The Nth Degree”). The same year, Reg is replaced by his mirror universe counterpart for several weeks (TNG comics - Terra Icognita).

2368 – Reg leads his first away mission, which goes very badly when his shuttle crashes in a jungle where a creature tries to hunt them down. He manages to get everyone home safely and earns himself a commendation (TNG short story “The Naked Truth”).

2369 – Reg finally faces his transporter phobia and helps rescue the surviving crew of the U.S.S. Yosemite (TNG “Realm of Fear”).

2370 – Reg is given a synthetic T-cell by Dr. Crusher that mutates and spreads through the ship, causing the crew to de-evolve. The mutation is corrected and later named Barclay’s Protomorphosis Syndrome (TNG “Genesis”).

2371 – The Enterprise D is destroyed (TNG Generations). Reg is transferred to Jupiter Station to work on the Emergency Medical Hologram with Dr. Zimmerman.

2373 – Reg is transferred back to the Enterprise E, and is aboard when it goes back in time to prevent to Borg from interfering with Earth’s first contact with the Vulcans. He is part of the team that helps rebuild Zefram Cochrane’s vessel (TNG First Contact). The Dominion War begins that year (DS9 “Call To Arms”).

2374 – Reg decides that being aboard the Enterprise is too much stress and that for his mental health he needs to take a quieter job. He takes a promotion and a transfer to Earth to begin work on the Pathfinder Project.

2375 – The Breen attack StarFleet headquarters in San Francisco, where Reg lives (DS9 “The Changing Face of Evil”). The Dominion War ends later that year (DS9 “What You Leave Behind”).

2376 – Reg has become obsessed with contacting Voyager, and has a holo-addiction relapse. When no one will listen to his plan, he breaks into the Pathfinder facilities to implement it himself. It is successful and Reg is the first person from the Alpha Quadrant to speak with the Voyager crew in over five years (VOY “Pathfinder”).

2377 – Pathfinder has established regular monthly communication with Voyager. When Dr. Zimmerman falls very ill, Reg writes to Voyager’s Doctor, who has his program transferred to the Alpha Quadrant to treat him (VOY “Life Line”) Later that year, Reg attempts to transfer a hologram of himself to Voyager, but it is hijacked by the Ferengi who attempt to use it to steal Seven of Nine’s nanoprobes and destroy Voyager. Reg and the Pathfinder personnel manage to stop them (VOY “Inside Man”).

2378 – Reg testifies in an inquiry to determine the Voyager EMH’s sentience (VOY “Author, Author”). Later that year, Voyager returns home (VOY “Endgame”).

2381 – Reg is assigned to the USS Galen with Project Full Circle, exploring the Delta Quadrant (VOY novels). **Note that mun has not finished reading the novels so this section of the timeline will remain incomplete for now.

2386 – Reg is promoted to lieutenant commander.

2395 – Reg is promoted to commander and transfers back to Earth to begin teaching at StarFleet Academy.

College Football 2020 Season Week 9 TV Watch Em Ups: the weekend college football truly became president

Before we get into these games that you lot have already picked over on your commenter zoom call, I just want to marvel at this beautiful correctness from last week’s post:

Michigan State at 13 Michigan 12:00pm FOX

Michigan is favored by 21.5 against a bad Michigan State team. If that’s not the set up for a great punchline, I don’t know what is.

Now let’s get back to being mostly wrong.

I could attempt to make humor here or set up the rest of this post or just wallow in whatever feelings right now but the only thought I’ve actually got in my head is “Woohoo! Miami’s 6-1!” With that in mind I’ll try to get through all of the rest of this shit. Theoretically I’m putting you up on games you wouldn’t otherwise care about but realistically this whole pandemic situation has wiped out my desire to watch all the bad football and the commenters here are much more informed on the gambling and degeneracy that I so long to wallow in.

I don’t even have an RTARLsman going right now because all of this still feels like a long dopey preseason. And it isn’t improving. Just look at the long list of games of the week this week. Up from only one listed last Friday night! I’m looking forward to some surprise games of the week at that.

i Fullerton claimed his third straight individual title to start the 2020 season.

The Warren boys, led by an eighth place finish from Brennan Perdue, barely beat out second place Fisher Catholic. When the final scores were originally announced, Fisher Catholic had won by two points. However, a later announcement revealed there was an error in the scoring and that Warren had actually edged the Irish 56-58. The Warriors’ tent erupted in excitement at the announcement as they won their fourth straight team title to start the season.

“That’s our fourth win in a row,” said Warren head coach Ryan Werry. “We’ve finished first four races in a row. That’s kind of the boys’ goal, but our ultimate goal is to just keep getting better each week. Each one is a practice leading up to districts. We have goal as a team, we want that district. We want to challenge that. So far the boys have bought in and they’re really working hard.”

Perdue clocked in at 16 minutes, 41 seconds to lead the Warren pack, but Matthews Rauch’s 11th place finish (16:58), Bryson Angelo’s 12th place finish (17:11), Andrew Vincent’s 15th place finish (17:27) and Justin Pate’s 16th place finish (17:36) also helped fuel the victory.

“Brennan’s been finishing first on our team,” Werry said. “Matthew Rauch has been a pretty steady second. He’s been moving up and lots of improvement for him from last year. Andrew Vincent worked hard over the summer. Our top five boys really stuck together over the summer and they worked hard. They’re showing it. Work over the summer and it pays off in the fall.”

For the third time this season, the Belpre duo of Fullerton and Blake Rodgers finished 1-2 in a race.

Fullerton, an All-Ohio runner last season, shattered the course record of 16:34, clocking in at an impressive 15:28. The previous record was held by former Fort Frye Cadet Justin Anderson, younger brother of Jeremy Anderson, who passed away unexpectedly last year.

Fullerton overcame some early-race aches to put together a dominant performance.

“First 100 meters my legs were hurting a little bit,” the Golden Eagle said. “We had a lot of tough workouts this week. But after that I felt really good, really strong. So I just tried to keep it consistent all day.

“My goal was to go under 16-flat. I heard it was a pretty fast course. Wasn’t expecting to go 15:28 and definitely wasn’t expecting Blake to break 16 either. So proud of the team. We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work. It’s just awesome.”

Rodgers, just a freshman, finished in 15:51.

“He’s just killing it every single practice and we’re just going at it,” Fullerton said of his teammate.

Davis Leach added a 27th place (18:31) finish for Belpre, followed by Evan Wells in 31st (19:06) and Kayden Wright in 45th (20:10). It all added up to a third place finish for the short-handed Golden Eagles.

“We don’t have our third or seventh runner right now,” Fullerton said. “They’re both injured at the moment but they should be back this coming weekend at Belpre. Pretty happy with third overall.”

Fisher Catholic’s Patrick Kerney placed third (16:01) while teammates Aiden Jackson (16:28) an Noah Sharp (16:36) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Bellaire’s Jacob Definbaugh grabbed fourth place with a time of 16:06. Marietta freshman Ezra Minard earned a top five finish, clocking in at 16:21 for fifth place. Eastern’s Brayden O’Brien (16:49) came in ninth while Fort Frye freshman Phinn Spindler rounded out the top 10 with a time of 16:55.

The Cadet boys placed ninth as a team. Caldwell finished fourth as a team with Andrew Sheanshang (17:36) coming in 17th to produce the Redskins’ top finish.

The Tiger boys placed fifth as a team, led by Minard. Nathan Johnson added a 16th place finish (18:46) while Ethan Young was close behind in 28th (18:52).

On the girls side, it was Marietta which took home the first place trophy. The Tigers defeated second place Warren, 70-84.

“The girls have been working hard in practice and it’s paying off,” said MHS head coach Jon Tynan. “We’ve been changing some things up trying to keep them fresh for race day. It’s super exciting to see them come together like this.”

Ciara Space was the race’s leader for two miles, but Fisher Catholic’s Natalie Boyden took the lead down the stretch and won with a time of 19:18, a new course record.

Space finished second with a time of 19:25

“Ciara Space has been doing a great job for us this season,” Tynan praised. “She’s really going to have a great senior year. We’re looking forward to seeing what she’s got.”

Ava Gebczyk gave the Tigers a fourth place finish at 20:02, finishing just behind Warren’s Grace Randall, who clocked in at 20:01.

Coming in 13th and 14th were Marietta’s Lynncoln Tynan (21:33) and Hannah Lovejoy (21:35), respectively, giving the Tigers four runners in the top 14.

“Having four of the top 14 — and Mahlen (Becker) really pulled in our fifth one there to help us secure that victory,” coach Tynan said. “It was a good day of racing.”

Becker placed 43rd with a time of 23:50.

Allison Werry gave Warren a pair of top 10 finishers, placing ninth with a time of 21:02. Devanne Reynolds finished 20th (22:07), Madelyn Dougherty was 29th (22:47) and Lily Herriott was 32nd (23:03).

“This is a fast course, but our girls just keep improving,” said coach Werry. “At the Broughton race, we finished third behind Marietta and Caldwell. We were looking to move a spot up, win it or get second. That was a team focus today.”

Completing the top 10 in the girls race were Buckeye Trail’s Katherine Williams (5th, 20:07), Federal Hocking’s Rosemary Stephens (6th, 20:07), Caldwell’s Sage Speck (7th, 20:16), Shenandoah’s Kendall Mackie (8th, 20:46) and River’s Mara Beard (10th, 21:07).

Speck, who won the Broughton Invitational earlier this season, helped Caldwell place third as a team. Brynn Block (18th, 21:52), Calli Hesson (24th, 22:19), Katie Franklin (26th, 22:35) and Emma Lowe (27th, 22:38) were Caldwell’s other big contributors.

Morgan’s Emily Pinkerton just missed the top 10, placing 11th with a time of 21:15. Waterford’s Kaylor Offenberger clocked in at 21:42 to place 16th, while Morgan’s Dahlia Hill was right behind in 17th with a time of 21:51.

The Belpre boys won the middle school team title. The Golden Eagles got second, third and fourth place finishes from Austin Jenkins (12:33), Carter Norman (12:47) and Johnny Miller (12:47), respectively.

Eastern’s Connor Nolan won the individual title with a time of 11:33. Marietta’s Tyler Frye placed fifth (12:47), Waterford’s Troy Gibson was sixth (12:49), Caldwell’s Charles Estadt was seventh (12:52), Waterford’s Aiden Jones was eighth (13:01), Shenandoah’s Jarrett Wentworth was ninth (13:04) and Waterford’s Gavin Offenberger was 10th (13:13).

Fort Frye dominated the girls middle school race, taking the team title with four girls in the top five. Emma Richards won the race with a time of 12:53, followed by Cadence Waller (2nd, 13:07), Laine Spindler (3rd, 13:52) and Maggie Fulton (5th, 14:23.)

Marietta’s Millie Becker placed fourth (14:07), Waterford’s Seneca Lang was sixth (14:43), Belpre’s Shyanna Miller was seventh (14:46), River’s Mallory Brake was eighth (14:56), Caldwell’s Alexis Franklin placed ninth (14:57) and Waterford’s Alyssa Mooney came in 10th (15:31.)

Warren’s head coach had high praise for the level of competition the race featured.

“We came into this not knowing, and then we started seeing some teams show up, and we were like, ‘OK, we’re going to have a race today,’” Werry said. “That’s what we want. We want the challenge. We don’t want to be complacent. We want to go places where we’re going to be challenged.”

#captionsON™ Reading Campaign Inspires Kids to Turn Screen Time into Reading Time

Just 30 minutes of screen time with captions ON is like reading 30 pages of a 5th grade book, motivating struggling readers to ‘Be. CAPTION.COOL’

during TV, online shows, and games.

TROY, Ohio (Sept. 2, 2020) — Recognizing that 65% of American children are not proficient in reading—yet spend hours daily “glued” to screens—the new #captionsON Reading Campaign educates parents and teachers that screen time can be a form of reading time. All TV’s and channels, as well as online videos and most games, have built-in Closed Captioning functionality (CC), and it is easy, free, and cool to click captions ON. The #captionsON campaign is geared toward kids ages 8-12 but can benefit anyone with literacy challenges.

Many educators and parents have a visceral reaction against students spending time looking at screens, but screen time can and should be productive,” said Leib Lurie, Caption.Cool Founder and co-founder of Kids Read Now. “With captions on, 30 minutes of screen time has a similar benefit, in building reading skills as 30 pages of a book. Our core mission is to improve literacy. A key success factor will come from turning captions on as automatic as buckling your seatbelt when you get in the car.”

Most tweens and teens spend 5 – 7 hours a day consuming screen time, which is increasing as a result of school closures and other learning disruptions related to COVID-19. As so many students struggle with reading, teachers and parents need better ways to boost reading scores. Evidence-based research shows the use of closed captioning can improve reading skills.

Chris Piper, the superintendent of Troy City (Ohio) Schools, commented: “At Troy City Schools, we have worked to deepen our literacy instruction and seek innovative ways to encourage our students to read. We endorse #captionsON because we believe it will motivate more children, particularly disadvantaged youth and English language learners, to turn their screen time into reading time.”

The #captionsON campaign is part of the Caption.Cool broader mandate to fuse literacy, technology, and empathy. The Caption.Cool Reading Family, a diverse set of characters led by Capty, the Caption Cool unicorn will champion literacy to kids through relatable life stories of the characters and grow with the influence of Caption.Cool Literacy Champions. The C.C Champions are passionate literacy advocates from all walks of life who openly share their motivation behind promoting #captionsON and being ‘Caption.Cool’ to incentivize kids to improve their reading skills by sharing their love of reading.

CC Literacy Champion Laura Bemus, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, said, “I’m Caption.Cool because reading is so important and exposure to text, like captions, builds fluency and comprehension for students. My lifelong love of reading was established as a child and through making choices of great reading material of high interest.”

The campaign’s launch initiatives include an engaging 60-second animated video and the #captionsOn Reading Family Engagement Kit containing information for parents, and a full sheet of vibrant stickers for kids to pre-order at Caption.Cool. A social media Face-Swap E-card campaign geared towards younger kids and parents to share their faces in Caption.Cool characters complement the launch initiatives.

The CAPTION.COOL journey began in 1992

In 1992, serial entrepreneur Leib Lurie started his first Closed Captioning reading initiative and never wavered in his belief that closed captioning could improve reading skills. (click video here) Even in 1992 he was concerned about kids and “screen time” (then TV time), although the term “screen time” had not yet been coined!

In 2012, Leib and his wife, Barbara Lurie, a teacher and reading specialist who saw the effects of children who weren’t reading at grade level, co-founded Kids Read Now, a K-3 in-home summer reading program. Kids Read Now, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, gifted 400,000 books this year to 60,000 students in 18 states.

Leib’s long-time passion project to “turn screen time into reading time” came to creative life when he and Barb reached out to long-time marketing partner Gloria Maxx who created the Caption.Cool concept, brand, and diverse cast of empathy-based characters inspired by her experiences as a bullied immigrant child whose best friends were books.

“Charlotte’s Web is the first book I read as a kid. I loved the characters as their actions gave me strength to find my voice through life’s adversities,” says Gloria Maxx, Caption.Cool Co-Founder and COO. “We want to emulate that experience to kids who struggle with reading by offering them stories they can resonate with which champion reading with captions on.”

With #captionsON, kids read along with closed captions during screen time, which allows children with low literacy rates who consume several hours of screen time daily to improve their reading skills, which ultimately improves their lives and future potential. Caption.Cool is an innovative, independent campaign for literacy with a single focus on making the use of captions (subtitles) an “automatic reflex” during all screen time, as it is now second nature to “buckle up” seat belts when driving. 31 Days of Dead 2019: Project Wrap-Up

Hey Now Kids!

I have emerged after a much needed rest. I want to take the opportunity to personally express my thanks to all of you for following this year’s edition of the Unofficial 31 Days of Dead and for all of the messages and kind words that you have sent me. This was a pretty ambitious project that kept me busy right up until the final day, so I apologize for the delay or lack of response to some of your emails. It was a fun ride, and we covered a lot of ground. Here are some quick stats:

THANK YOU!! These projects are a big undertaking and there is no way I could do it all on my own. I want to take this opportunity to recognize two key people who helped out. First, a big thank you to Brian Levine who has been providing the artwork since I started doing these projects in 2010. Each year his artwork gets better. He obviously takes our tagline very seriously – “When they go high, we go higher.”

7:29 AM ETPITTSBURGH -- More than 6,600 days after Troy Polamalu hesitantly answered the call from a Pittsburgh area code to begin his NFL career, he and the coach who helped make the call will enter the next phase of their storied careers.Former Pittsburgh Steelers Polamalu and Bill Cowher will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night (6:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) in Canton, Ohio, becoming the first duo of player and the coach who drafted him, to get in in the same class."You wouldn't take my call when I drafted you because you didn't like the 412 area code," Cowher joked as he interviewed Polamalu after the safety got the famed knock from HOF president David Baker in February 2020."It's attached to bad weather," Polamalu replied, laughing.
