You had nothing against Lady Ayaka. She was nothing but sweet and kind. You had nothing against Tohma either. It was his job as retainer to help and serve her.

It was his job, but sometimes you thought that he might really have an eye on the lady. How could he not?

"Hey Y/N!!!" He came running down the slope of the cobbled steps of Inazuma. You wince a little at his excitement, but turn around and give him a smile. "Where've you been? I haven't seen you in a while," he raises a hand to scratch the back of his head. Smiling and laughing sheepishly.

He had no idea.

"We haven't taken a walk down Cherry Blossom lane in a while, wanna go?"

It was a name he came up with. The cliffside of Inazuma city, where several cherry blossom trees bloomed, and the view of the sea was immaculate.

"Sorry, Tohma, I've got a lot more errands to run today,"

You fix your gaze at the basket in your arms, full of apples. Tohma hesitates for a moment, a split second of a frown starting to form on his face, until he brightens up again. “Oh! I’ve got some time today, need help?” He moves forward in an attempt to take the basket from you. But you step and turn away slightly to move it from his reach. “I--I, no. I can handle it.” You move backwards a few steps and put on a smile that was not so convincing. “I’ll see you another time, Tohma!” and you finally turn and scamper away. Frown forming as soon as your face is concealed from him.

Tohma’s shoulders slump as he watches your form hurry away from him. His lips twitch to the side sadly and he lets out a long sigh. There’s an ache in his heart. It’d been festering for days now. At first he thought that you were just really busy. But day after day of not being able to find you, or you rejecting his help. He could see the distance between him and you, and he hadn’t known what the cause was.

He doesn’t recall doing anything wrong. It made him antsy, not being able to spend time with you all of a sudden. Not being able to hear you laugh at his stories and not being able to admire the sea with you.

So, the next day, he tries again.

“Hey, Y/N, you got some time?”

“Tohma, sorry, no, I--”

“Have some errands to run?”

You pick your head up at his tone of voice. It was almost accusatory. The two of you stare at each other for a few seconds before you break the gaze. “...Yeah,”

“Are you avoiding me?”

You continue to pretend to work on your basket. Transferring apples from the crate. You’ve practiced the scenario many times already. “No, I’m just bu--”

“Y/N,” but you aren’t prepared for the hurt you hear in his voice. How lost your name sounded on his lips. “I just...wanna talk? Just 5 minutes? We don’t have to go anywhere,”

You stop what you’re doing and straighten up to look him in the eye. The fear of getting rejected is back. The fear of ruining this friendship is back. Your tactic was to run away, and you realized that it was most probably the worst tactic ever.

It didn’t solve anything and it put a rift between the two of you.

“Tohma...” you put your hands together and start to fumble with them. “The truth is, I...” you bite your lip. “I can’t...be friends with you anymore,”

His eyes widen and the terror that hits him is new. “Why? If I did something wrong you can just tell me!” You shake your head “You didn’t do anything wrong. I’m just...” you chicken out “I can’t tell you,” your head was pounding. You had no idea what you were doing right now. The words were just pouring from your mouth. Your hands were getting sweaty.

“...No. You can’t just say that without an explanation,” ever the calm negotiator, he knows what he wants and he probably would not leave you until he got an answer. A moment of silence passes.

“...I like you,” Tohma thought that he was hearing things. It was so soft that he had the illusion it was the wind whispering to him, but you continue. “I like you but I didn’t know what to do and it hurt to pretend that I’m happy to just be friends so I...” Your lips start to tremble.

The wind passes by the two of you, ruffling your hair and causing you to lift your eyes, taking a chance to peek up at him. He... was smiling.

“That’s what it was?” He laughs heartily and before you could even react he has scooped you into his arms, his head rested on top of yours. “You should have said so earlier, Y/N,”

“I-It’s not easy, you know...” You’re not sure what kind of situation this was and you’re confused as to his reaction.

“I understand. I’m sorry.” His arms seems to tighten around you. “But rest assured Y/N, it’ll be easy from now on.” He laughs again, like he had just won something expensive or gotten a great gift. “I’ll be happy to take care of you!”
