SINGER NIALL HORAN INVESTS IN FENWAY SPORTS, MCILROY TGL TEAM
Tumblr media
Singer-songwriter Niall Horan will tee it up as the latest investor in TGL, the tech-infused team golf league backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Horan, who first gained fame as a member of boy band One Direction, invested in Boston Common Golf through his investment vehicle Greenbridge Ventures.
Boston Common Golf is one of the six inaugural TGL teams and owned by Fenway Sports Group and McIlroy’s investment firm, Symphony Ventures.
McIlroy and Horan both hail from Ireland and have been longtime friends. “Golf has been a lifelong passion of mine,” Horan said in a statement. “Being able to combine my love for the game and my friendship with Rory into a relationship that helps launch a new concept in golf is truly special.”
TGL teams will each feature four golfers hitting shots into a golf simulator screen until they are within 50 yards of the hole and the action transfers to a short game area that transforms between holes. The season includes 15 matches, plus playoffs.
Horan will also serve as an ambassador for Boston Common Golf, which will benefit from his massive social media following, which includes 72 million combined followers on Instagram and Twitter—Woods has 10 million and McIlroy 6 million.
In 2015, Horan launched a sports agency focused on golf, Modest! Golf Management, with his business partner, Mark McDonnell. Their clients include Tyrrell Hatton, who has won six European Tour events and one on the PGA Tour. That same year, Horan served as McIlroy’s caddie in the Masters’ annual Par 3 Contest.
In addition to his singing career, Horan was a coach the past year on The Voice and coached the winner in back-to-back seasons. He is currently on the North American leg of his global tour.
TGL was slated to start play this January, but delayed its inaugural season to begin Jan. 7, 2025 after a power failure caused the dome of the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens to deflate. The required repairs led the TGL to delay a year. Last month, Horan visited TGL’s performance lab to preview the technology that will be used in the competition.
The SoFi Center will boast a 3,000-square-foot simulator screen and a 22,475-square-foot customizable short game area. TGL rules also include a shot clock, and the league plans for players to be mic’d up during the action. A seating area for 1,500 has been designed around the playing zone.
Matches will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+.
The six, location-tied teams for TGL’s inaugural season: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston, Jupiter Links GC, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club and the Bay Golf Club, have attracted heavy hitters in the sports space, including Arthur Blank, Steve Cohen, Alexis Ohanian and Marc Lasry, as well as athletes Serena Williams, Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Woods partnered with David Blitzer for the Jupiter franchise.

Rahm walks a fine line to stay eligible for Ryder Cup
Jon Rahm is set to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup after appealing against his outstanding fines for defecting to LIV Golf. Rahm either had to pay his fines or launch an appeal in order to be allowed to contest DP World Tour events, and he has entered the Spanish Open, Dunhill Links Championship and Andalucia Masters. Entries for the Spanish Open closed at noon on Thursday (local time) and Rahm launched his appeal in time to be included in the field. “Jon Rahm has a pending appeal against sanctions imposed on him, and in accordance with the DP World Tour’s regulations he is eligible to participate in the acciona Open de Espana presented by Madrid later this month,” a spokesperson for the DP World Tour said. In order to remain eligible for next year’s Ryder Cup contest at Bethpage, Rahm has to play in four DP World Tour events this season – the Olympics counts as one – and he revealed on Wednesday he had entered the required three tournaments. The two-time major winner also said he had no intention of paying the substantial fines he has accrued for playing in LIV events without permission. Rahm’s Ryder Cup and Legion XIII team-mate Tyrrell Hatton was able to contest the British Masters a fortnight ago by appealing against his fines, and Rahm has now followed suit. Speaking ahead of LIV Chicago, Rahm said: “I’m not a big fan of the fines. “I don’t intend to pay the fines and we keep trying to have a discussion with them (the DP World Tour) about how we can make this happen. “I intend to play in Spain. Whether they let me play or not is a different thing.” Players who initially joined LIV in 2022 appealed against their suspensions and fines and were able to compete until April 2023, when an arbitration panel found in favour of the DP World Tour and ratified its right to enforce its regulations. Exorcizing Demons - Nick Taylor Wins on Home and Native Land
Canadian golf fans have clambered for one of their own to win their National Open since Pat Fletcher last did it in 1954 at Vancouver, British Columbia’s Point Grey Golf Club some 69 years ago. For generations, Canadian professional golfers have had their opportunities to win the Canadian Open all just to face disappointment in riveting fashion or to simply fade away coming down the stretch.  In…

Niall Horan: Cynics fuelled me to succeed with Modest Golf
Niall Horan has opened up on the cynicism he faced when he launched his golf management company in 2016, detailing how it fuelled him to make it a success.
Speaking in the December edition of bunkered, the chart-topping musician reflected on the launch of Modest Golf Management in 2016.
The boutique firm was dismissed by many naysayers as a non-credible ‘plaything’ for the former One Direction star.
However, seven years on, it has built an enviable stable of clients – amongst them Tyrrell Hatton and Leona Maguire – and has expanded its reach with the opening of a new office in the US, whilst also diversifying its business interests.
It’s all a far cry from the early days, when the skeptics were out in force.
“To be honest, I kind of expected the cynicism,” explained Horan. “There are agents on the range who have been there for a long time. They know the tour inside out and they’ve had their pick of the players for a long time. When they saw me turn up and try to get involved, they were bound to be a bit like, ‘Who’s he?’
“We heard bits and pieces here and there but that just gave us more drive – a healthy drive – to prove them wrong. Not in a ‘we’ll show them’ kind of a way. More, ‘we really want to do this’.
He added: “Six or seven years ago, golf looked the same as it had for many years. The governing bodies had been run by the same people for a very long time and so on.
“I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t easy to begin with. It was hard getting turned away from things pretty much constantly, but I always knew that if we stuck to it and worked hard then we’d get there in the end. Now, we’ve got a great relationship with all the governing bodies and all the agents, too.
“Slowly but surely, it’s turned around and people have started to realise, ‘Oh, wait a minute, maybe they are in it for the long haul.’”
Mark McDonnell, who co-founded Modest Golf with Horan, added: “To this day, I still get people saying to me, ‘Is Niall really involved?’. I mean, of course he is! Obviously, he can’t be at every single event and in every single meeting but, throughout all the major decisions and moments in our company’s history, he’s been there.”
“This has never, ever been a pet project for him or a little plaything to occupy his time whilst he figured out what he wanted to do next. And to be honest, I felt like it did me a disservice when I heard people say that.
“I know there are celebrities out there who’ll put their name to something just to make a quick buck and I would never stake my own career on that. I knew Niall’s passion for golf was genuine, and that’s why it was really easy for me to want to get involved.”
Horan also expressed his hope that his involvement with golf will help encourage more young girls to take an interest in the sport.
“I always say this but, you know, I’ve got 40 million Twitter followers and a few more on Instagram,” he adds. “If me posting about golf here and there makes just one per cent of my followers take an interest in golf, well, look, I’m no mathematician, but it’s a lot!”
“Don’t get me wrong, I know a lot of them will be like, ‘oh great, he’s talking about golf again!’ But I guarantee there’s quite a few who’ll read that tweet and go to the driving range, or go to Topgolf, or even just try to get involved in some shape or form. It’s just about letting them know the sport exists really.
“You never know how many will go, ‘Well, if Niall thinks it’s cool, it might be cool.’”
