2023 UCI Track Champions League Recap

As the leaves turn orange and the weather gets crisp, where do folks go to get their cycling fix? Not to cyclocross, but to the UCI Track Champions League. Bikeflights partnered with the international track cycling event for the second year running as its official bicycle shipping service to facilitate the safe transfer of over 60 track riders’ bicycles across five rounds of fierce competition.

The bicycles were moved first after Round One in Mallorca, Spain to Round Two in Berlin, Germany, followed by transfer to Round Three in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, and were finally delivered to Rounds Four and Five in London, England. Bikeflights International Manager Brenna Clancey led event preparation and oversaw transportation while Delivery Manager Kent Sanchez facilitated on-the-ground operations, assisted by Bikeflights Guest Staffer Nadia Gbané throughout the first three rounds.

Bikeflights International Team Lead Sam Quijano received a last minute call-up to assist with the final two rounds in London.

“It was a phenomenal experience to be able to see and work on the operational side of the event after being involved on the planning side over the past two years,” said Sam. “The riders were a lovely group of folks who are immensely talented, and it was a privilege to help safely transport their bicycles.”

The riders competed in two primary categories across the series: sprint and endurance. The event program alternated between sprint events, such as the match sprint and the keirin, and endurance events like the scratch race and the elimination, with riders performing the overall best in each category across the series earning the title of series winner.

Our responsibility at Bikeflights was to safely and quickly transport the athletes’ bicycles between each velodrome location so riders wouldn’t have to worry about bringing their bicycles on airlines or on public transit between rounds. For the second consecutive year, we pulled this feat off without a hitch! Once the event series came to a close in London, we also helped ship many of the riders’ bicycles back to their desired locations in the European Union.

When not directing the organized chaos of packing, labeling and transporting dozens of athletes’ bicycles, Kent and Sam were able to take some time to see the sights around London. They were able to visit famous sites such as the London Bridge, Borough Market and Hyde Park and got to attend a West Ham United home game.

Bikeflights Ships Bikes for Track Riders at UCI TCL

Seventy-two of the best track riders in the world will race at the UCI Track Champions League (UCI TCL) in four different countries throughout Europe over the next four weeks, and Bikeflights will be there, too, as the official bicycle shipping service, helping riders transport their bikes.

Racing will kick off on October 21 with round 1 in Mallorca, Spain. It will then move to Berlin, Germany and St-Quentin-en-Yvelines (near Paris), France for rounds 2 and 3, respectively, before ultimately finishing with two final rounds in London in the United Kingdom on November 10 and 11.

National, Continental, World and Olympic Champions representing 28 countries are among the riders who’ll be competing. Half of them will be contesting endurance events like elimination and scratch races, and half will be racing in sprint events like keirins and individual sprints. Great Britain will be the most represented nation with 14 total riders.

As the official bike shipping service of the UCI Track Champions League, Bikeflights will transport riders’ bikes from velodrome to velodrome, both within the European Union and back and forth from the last two rounds in London. After the competition wraps up, Bikefiights will also ship many of the EU-based riders’ bikes directly back home to them.

Endurance

Current Olympic champion and four-time UCI World Champion Matthijs Büchli (Netherlands) is among the 18 riders named on the men’s endurance roster, joining recently crowned UCI World Champion William Tidball (Great Britain) and former rainbow jersey holders Theo Reinhardt (Germany), Quentin Lafarge (France) and Sebastián Mora (Spain). Reigning UCI TCL Men’s Endurance Champion Claudio Imhof (Switzerland) will also be back to defend his title along with 2021 winner Gavin Hoover (United States).

The 18-rider strong women’s endurance start list features Olympic and UCI World Champion Katie Archibald (Great Britain) and fellow rainbow jersey holder Neah Evans (Great Britain) along with two-time European Champion Sophie Lewis (Great Britain) and European Points Race gold medallist Anita Stenberg (Norway).

Sixteen endurance riders (six men and 10 women) are set to make their UCI TCL debuts – including two-time European Under 23 Champion Lara Gillespie (Ireland), two-time European Junior Champion Hélène Hesters (Belgium) and three-time Asian Games gold medallist Eyia Hashimoto (Japan).

Sprint

Reigning Olympic Champion Kelsey Mitchell (Canada) tops the list of 18 women’s sprint riders, joining fellow Olympic medallists Lauriane Genest (France) and Katy Marchant (Great Britain) and current European Champion Alessa-Catriona Pröpster (Germany). The quartet will compete alongside UCI World Champions Emma Finucane (Great Britain) and Ellesse Andrews (New Zealand).

The 18-rider strong men’s sprint roster features 2023 European Champion Tijmen van Loon (Netherlands) and former European gold medallists Mateus Rudyk (Poland) and Melvin Landerneau (France), with two-time Olympic and 13-time UCI World Champion Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands). Fellow rainbow jersey holder Kevin Quintero (Colombia) and defending UCI TCL Men’s Sprint Champion Matthew Richardson (Australia) are also on the roster.

Two sprint athletes from China and Taiwan, respectively, will be making their first UCI TCL appearances: Wang Lijuan and Hsieh Nien Hsing.

Follow the Action

Since its launch in 2021, the UCI TCL has consolidated its place as one of the “Monuments” of track cycling, sitting alongside the UCI Track World Championships, UCI Track Nations Cup and the Olympic Games at the very pinnacle of the global racing calendar.

As well as captivating thousands of fans inside each velodromes, the exploits of the world’s best riders will again be beamed across the globe, with Discovery+, Eurosport, GCN+ and a host of international broadcast partners bringing the sport to countless screens.

Last season over 18,000 fans watched the action in person, with 11.4 million TV viewers tuning in from 81 countries around the globe and millions more fans following the action on the official UCI TCL app and social media channels.

2022 UCI Track Champions League Recap

What takes four weeks, spans four countries and includes many of the fastest bike racers in the world? If you answered the UCI Track Champions League, you’d be correct! BikeFlights was on hand throughout November and into December as the official bicycle shipping service for all five rounds of the second-year international track racing series featuring 72 of the best track riders from all over the globe.

BikeFlights Delivery Manager Kent Sanchez spearheaded a successful on-the-ground effort to move riders’ bikes from round 1 in Mallorca, Spain to round 2 in Berlin, Germany to round 3 in Paris, France and finally, onto the last two rounds in London, England. Thirty-six men and thirty-six women would spend four weekends racing each other on world-class velodromes in each city.

"It was a fantastic experience to not only get to watch the world’s top track racers compete in iconic cities across Europe, but also to be thanked by the riders for transporting their bikes to the next location," said Kent.

At the end of the series, champions would be crowned in two disciplines: sprint and endurance. Sprint riders competed in events like the match sprint and keirin whereas endurance riders battled in events such as the scratch race and elimination.

It was our job at BikeFlights to move riders’ bikes safely and on-time from velodrome to velodrome so the riders could travel more easily from round to round without the hassle of having to take their bikes with them on planes and trains. That’s exactly what we did, plus we also shipped many riders’ bikes back home to locations within Europe after the final two rounds wrapped up in London.

For the first three rounds, Kent was assisted by BikeFlights guest staffer Nadia Gbané. BikeFlights President William Alcorn and Vice President Sue George joined in to help with the final two rounds in the United Kingdom.

When not helping to pack, label and ship riders’ track bikes, Kent, Bill and Sue took the opportunity to walk around London and explore. They visited famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, London Bridge, Big Ben, various Christmas street markets plus a few other famous sites.

BikeFlights Transporting Bikes For The UCI Track Champions League

Featuring 72 of the world’s best track cyclists in sprint and endurance disciplines, the UCI TCL will also host rounds during each of the next three weekends at world-class velodromes in Berlin, Germany; St-Quentin-En-Yvelines, France; and London, England.

“We’ve been fans of track racing for a long time and are excited to help the best track cyclists in the world transport their bikes between velodromes throughout Europe as they race in the UCI Track Champions League,” said William Alcorn, President of BikeFlights. 

The UCI Track Champions League originally came about from a partnership developed between Eurosport Events and the UCI, and the series was first held in 2021. It features an equal number of male and female athletes as well as equal prize money for all. The series is BikeFlight’s third international event partnership of 2022. We are also the official bike shipping service of the Global Bike Festival and the Tour de France.
