Umbraco is a great open source Content Management System that is built on .NET technology and used to run enterprise-level websites for a range of large, multinational organisations. Some examples include Microsoft, McDonalds and Mercedes Benz — giving you a clue at just how trusted this CMS system is. One of the benefits of Umbraco is that you can build an integrated site that can feed content from other digital platforms. It uses Microsoft stack and Microsoft Windows servers meaning it integrates well with third party systems and also benefits from the core security protection built into this.

Ranked as the second top CMS system in the world by CMS Crawler, Joomla is proven to be one of the most popular Content Management Systems out there. Joomla can be seen as more complex as it requires a certain amount of coding knowledge, for example to develop or customize components, modules and plugins.

A point to note when using Joomla is that you don’t get limitations with themes and templates – you can use multiple templates on one site. This means if the client wants a totally different layout for a blog than for their primary pages it is easy to do.

You can have different types of content displayed on one page and the backend is often praised for being well organised. It’s essentially a combination of static site builders with an additional dashboard to make it easy for users to edit content. It’s a great CMS for those who want to build a lot of customisable, relatively simple websites, but it doesn’t have the flexibility of more complex CMS systems.

6. Magnolia

Magnolia is one of the longer standing players in the field, having first been established over 15 years ago. It is a fast and easy system to use with powerful capabilities for creation, management and delivery of personalised experiences across channels.

It was first released in 2008 and has rapidly grown in popularity. It’s easy to add additional functionality with their marketplace add-ons so customising isn’t too difficult. Certain features such as the sitemap are native and not via plugins (which can sometimes slow sites down) — a further plus point for this CMS.

New research has revealed that WordPress is the top content management system (CMS) among enterprise businesses using two or more CMSs and it is also the dominant CMS for headless technology applications.

WP Engine’s new report, titled “The Rise of Multi CMS, WordPress and Headless in the Enterprise”, found that using a CMS is no longer optional for enterprise companies and that headless applications, which control the content that is separated from the display layer or the front-end user experience, are on the rise.

Vanson Bourne surveyed 300 enterprise-level IT and marketing decision makers in the US and UK to compile the new report that is a follow up to a similar survey conducted back in 2017.

The report shows a marked increase in the use of WordPress among enterprise customers and the popular CMS showed the highest increase in usage when compared to other CMSs including Adobe Experience Manager, Sitecore, Joomla, Drupal and Umbraco.

Enterprise CMS use

One of the most interesting findings from WPEngine’s survey was the clear return on investment advantage of WordPress. Of those surveyed, 31 percent viewed ROI as a major benefit of using WordPress and no other CMS scored higher than 27 percent with the average of all other CMSs at 20 percent. Of the IT and marketing decision makers who are already using WordPress, 38 percent saw ROI as a major benefit making the case that once an enterprise is using the CMS, its ROI is even more pronounced.

According to the survey, WordPress and Adobe Experience Manager are still battling it out for the top spot. While Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) is still the most commonly used CMS overall at 68 percent, WordPress is catching up fast at 66 percent. At the same time, WordPress use in the enterprise has risen by 16 percent since 2017 and this is driven by businesses using multiple CMSs. Almost half (49%) of enterprises are also planning to expand to additional CMSs in the future.

Founder and CTO at WP Engine, Jason Cohen provided further insight on the report’s findings and how enterprises are now using multiple CMSs, saying:

“For today’s enterprise organizations, using a CMS is no longer an option, it’s a mandate. The research results clearly show that not only are most, if not all, enterprises using a CMS, they are most likely using more than one. WordPress is one of the top two leading platforms for both primary and secondary uses, with clear benefits in terms of ease of use, ROI, agility and a faster time to market. It’s also one of the leading CMSs for headless applications, which continue to grow in this all-important market.”

Producing a Prioritised Requirements List

When starting out on a new Umbraco Project it's really important to know and communicate your requirements and your desired features.

There are many ways of communicating these, but here at Carbon Six Digital, we use a spreadsheet called the Prioritised Requirements and Traceability Matrix. Long name, but easy idea.

First the requirements list. This is a methodical list of all the features the new system must incorporate alongside other factors such as security and performance requirements. The functional requirements are often best articulated as a “User Story”.

The list should be Prioritised so that the developers focus attention on those features and requirements that are most important. For Agile Projects where the feature list flexes but the budget is fixed - prioritisation is critical to ensure that the budget is spent only on those features that really matter. We tend to use the MoSCoW prioritisation mnemonic (Must have, Should have, Could have, and Won’t have) to reach a common understanding with stakeholders on the importance they place on the delivery of each requirement.

It's also useful to capture those requirements which are subsequently agreed as out of scope, so we record the conversation and rationale behind de-scoping the feature.

Once the Prioritised Requirements part of the document is complete you're ready to commission the work to be built. This is where the Traceability Matrix becomes useful as a means of demonstrating control over the project and will be the subject of our next blog post.

Headless CMS and Decoupled CMS in .NET Core

I'm sure I'll miss some, so if I do, please sound off in the comments and I'll update this post over the next week or so!

Lately I've been noticing a lot of "Headless" CMSs (Content Management System). A ton, in fact. I wanted to explore this concept and see if it's a fad or if it's really something useful.

Given the rise of clean RESTful APIs has come the rise of Headless CMS systems. We've all evaluated CMS systems (ones that included both front- and back-ends) and found the front-end wanting. Perhaps it lacks flexibility OR it's way too flexible and overwhelming. In fact, when I wrote my podcast website I considered a CMS but decided it felt too heavy for just a small site.

A Headless CMS is a back-end only content management system (CMS) built from the ground up as a content repository that makes content accessible via a RESTful API for display on any device.

I could start with a database but what if I started with a CMS that was just a backend - a headless CMS. I'll handle the front end, and it'll handle the persistence.

Here's what I found when exploring .NET Core-based Headless CMSs. One thing worth noting, is that given Docker containers and the ease with which we can deploy hybrid systems, some of these solutions have .NET Core front-ends and "who cares, it returns JSON" for the back-end!

Lynicon

Lyncicon is literally implemented as a NuGet Library! It stores its data as structured JSON. It's built on top of ASP.NET Core and uses MVC concepts and architecture.

It does include a front-end for administration but it's not required. It will return HTML or JSON depending on what HTTP headers are sent in. This means you can easily use it as the back-end for your Angular or existing SPA apps.

Lyncion is largely open source at https://github.com/jamesej/lyniconanc. If you want to take it to the next level there's a small fee that gives you updated searching, publishing, and caching modules.

ButterCMS

ButterCMS is an API-based CMS that seamlessly integrates with ASP.NET applications. It has an SDK that drops into ASP.NET Core and also returns data as JSON. Pulling the data out and showing it in a few is easy.

Butter is a little different (and somewhat unusual) in that their backend API is a SaaS (Software as a Service) and they host it. They then have SDKs for lots of platforms including .NET Core. The backend is not open source while the front-end is https://github.com/ButterCMS/buttercms-csharp.

Piranha CMS

Piranha CMS is built on ASP.NET Core and is open source on GitHub. It's also totally package-based using NuGet and can be easily started up with a dotnet new template like this:

It even includes a new Blog template that includes Bootstrap 4.0 and is all set for customization. It does include optional lightweight front-end but you can use those as guidelines to create your own client code. One nice touch is that Piranha also images image resizing and cropping.

Umbraco Headless

The main ASP.NET website currently uses Umbraco as its CMS. Umbraco is a well-known open source CMS that will soon include a Headless option for more flexibility. The open source code for Umbraco is up here https://github.com/umbraco.

Orchard Core

Orchard is a CMS with a very strong community and fantastic documentation. Orchard Core is a redevelopment of Orchard using open source ASP.NET Core. While it's not "headless" it is using a Decoupled Architecture. Nothing would prevent you from removing the UI and presenting the content with your own front-end. It's also cross-platform and container friendly.

Squidex

"Squidex is an open source headless CMS and content management hub. In contrast to a traditional CMS Squidex provides a rich API with OData filter and Swagger definitions." Squidex is build with ASP.NET Core and the CQRS pattern and works with both Windows and Linux on today's browsers.
