Russ VerSteeg Law in Ancient Egypt, Carolina Academic Press, 2002.
"Law in Ancient Egypt examines the legal philosophy, legal institutions, and laws of the ancient Egyptians. Ancient documents, accounts, and literature provide the basis for a wide perspective of law and the Egyptian legal system. VerSteeg delineates and analyzes the elements of Egyptian law, explaining how social, religious, cultural, and political forces shaped both the procedural and substantive aspects of law.
Part I considers the theory of justice in ancient Egypt, exploring the role of law in society. Part I also traces the development of the judicial system distinguishing the various types of judges, courts, and procedures that were employed to make justice available to all. Part II reconstructs the substantive laws of the ancient Egyptians, including chapters detailing property, family law, inheritance and succession, tort and criminal law, contracts, and status. Land records, wills, sales documents, court chronicles, works of ancient fiction, and accounts of ancient trials illustrate the sophisticated, often subtle, and complex nature of law in ancient Egypt.
This study provides an introduction to law in ancient Egypt. It is the first comprehensive overview of the subject written from the perspective of someone trained as an American lawyer who is also sufficiently familiar with the discipline of Egyptology. The book will be of interest to Egyptologists, legal historians, law students, and educated non-specialists who are interested in the interaction of law, history, and ancient culture."
I read this book the last month. VerSteeg is not Egyptologist, but an American jurist and historian of law, also trained as Classicist. So, he has been based for his work on an extensive Egyptological bibliography on ancient Egypt in general (history, political regime and ideology, social and economic structures) and of course more particularly on law in ancient Egypt. The truth is that I have some objections concerning aspects of his book -mainly that he approaches the ancient Egyptian law somehow excessively through the categories of modern American law, that he credits the ancient Egyptians with the discovery of a principle of equality before the law and before justice, a thing about which I have my doubts, and that he tries in some places to find justifications for some very problematic ancient Egyptian judicial practices, like the torture of the accused and of the witnesses. However, all in all I found his book on law in ancient Egypt highly informative and thought provoking. An aspect of his work that I liked especially was his effort to understand the ancient Egyptian law also through a study of the extant ancient Egyptian literature and above all of The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant.

*I did uncover some information regarding Lisa Gold-Rubin and Nehama Shutan which would make them Pisces and Leo respectively, however I was unable to confirm whether they were the actual Eurovision performers or whether they just happened to share the same names. The lead for Gold-Rubin is stronger... but still unconfirmed 😅
**Some sites list Tymofii's birthday as being in September, however his actual Ukrainian Wikipedia page shows it as February 6th, so that's what I'm going with
***Claveau's Google profile and Wikipedia page listed his birthday as 17th December for ages, which is what I used. However his Wikipedia page now lists 29th December, changing him from Sagittarius to Capricorn. His French Wikipedia page also gives 29th December as his birthday, and who I am to doubt the French when it comes to their own countryman?
Corrections/additional information welcome!
#it's fascinating to me how april/may birthdays are SUPER common#yet june/july ones are insanely rare#just fascinating like you'd expect it to be balanced but it's just. not lol#eurovision#esc winners

Clownfish shrink their bodies to survive ocean heat waves
By ADITHI RAMAKRISHNAN, AP Science WriterUpdated May 21, 2025 8:41 p.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — To survive warming oceans, clownfish cope by shrinking in size.
Scientists observed that some of the orange-striped fish shrank their bodies during a heat wave off the coast of Papa New Guinea. Fish that slimmed were more likely to survive.
Heat waves are becoming more common and intense underwater due to climate change. Warmer water temperatures can bleach sea anemones that clownfish call home, forcing them to adapt to stay alive.
Scientists monitored and measured 134 colorful clownfish in Kimbe Bay during an intense heat wave in 2023 that's still bleaching corals worldwide. They found that 101 clownfish decreased in length on one or more occasions from heat stress.
“We were really shocked at first when we saw that they were shrinking at all,” said study author Morgan Bennett-Smith with Boston University. The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.
Though scientists don’t yet know how clownfish shrink, one idea is that they could be reabsorbing their own bone matter. It’s possible the smaller stature may help the clownfish save energy during a stressful scorch since smaller fish need less food.
Certain clownfish breeding pairs also synced their shrink to boost their survival odds. The females adjusted their size to stay bigger than their partners, keeping the female-dominated social hierarchy intact, researchers said.
Other animals also decrease in size to beat the heat. Marine iguanas get smaller during El Niño events that usher warm waters into the Galapagos. But this coping strategy hadn't yet been spotted in coral reef fish until now.
“This is another tool in the toolbox that fish are going to use to deal with a changing world,” said Simon Thorrold, an ocean ecologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who was not involved with the new study.
The tactic helps clownfish weather heat waves in the short-term, but it's not yet clear how the fish will fare if they have to keep it up in the years to come, Thorrold said.
Researchers found the shrinking was temporary. Clownfish possessed the ability to “catch up” and grow back when their environment got less stressful, showing how living things are staying flexible to keep up with a warming world, said study author Melissa Versteeg with Newcastle University.
“These natural systems really are under stress, but there's a capacity for incredible resilience,” Versteeg said.

So..."Shrinking Nemo", then.
