Possible Rule Change Regarding DM Screenshots on Tumblr
Due to an ongoing conflict between Automattic (WordPress/Tumblr) and WPEngine (a WordPress hosting service), CEO Matt Mullenweg has proposed a rule change banning the sharing of DM/private message screenshots (source) (edit: Kellie's article that set off this exchange).
Given the slapdash way this whole situation has been handled, I wouldn't be surprised if the change was implemented and began being enforced without warning.
Transcription of highlighted exchange below cut
matt: Discovery is fair game and goes through the courts to determine what is salient to be included as part of the public record. I'm 100% fine with all my interactions with the plaintiffs being part of discovery; in fact, I think it helps our case.
Kellie Peterson (source): FWIW publishing DMs/texts isn't even against the community guidelines of Tumblr. https:/www.tumblr.com/search/text%20message?src=suggested_search
matt: (replying to another part of the conversation) Are you now suggesting I treat women differently than men? I vehemently deny that. matt: Thank you for pointing out the failure that publishing DMs/texts without permission is not currently enumerated. I will make sure it gets added to WordPress and Tumblr's community guidelines.
Kellie Peterson: So you'll make the internet safer by preventing victims of harassment from sharing proof. Got it champ.
zachflauaus (other participant): This is not the decision you should be making as a result of this conversation, Matt. That you took this so personally, you're changing the rules on a dime to further protect your feelings without considering why (among the many reasons!) people publish DMs, is wild. To quote myself from earlier: But it would, at the very least, get me to reflect on what happened for them to have shared those messages. (Not to mention you are further reducing the content that people will feel safe to publish on your platforms (see: Tumblr).)
#I'd attach the screenshot itself to the post but it's not wanting to go through.#tumblr#tumblr meta#hellsite (affectionate)#hellsite (derogatory)

Automattic, the company that owns WordPress.com, is required to remove a controversial login checkbox from WordPress.org and let WP Engine back into its ecosystem after a judge granted WP Engine a preliminary injunction in its ongoing lawsuit. In addition to removing the checkbox—which requires users to denounce WP Engine before proceeding—the preliminary injunction orders that Automattic is enjoined from “blocking, disabling, or interfering with WP Engine’s and/or its employees’, users’, customers’, or partners’ access to wordpress.org” or “interfering with WP Engine’s control over, or access to, plugins or extensions (and their respective directory listings) hosted on wordpress.org that were developed, published, or maintained by WP Engine,” the order states. In the immediate aftermath of the decision, Automattic founder and CEO Matt Mullenweg asked for his account to be deleted from the Post Status Slack, which is a popular community for businesses and people who work on WordPress’s open-source tools.
“It's hard to imagine wanting to continue to working on WordPress after this,” he wrote in that Slack, according to a screenshot viewed by 404 Media. “I'm sick and disgusted to be legally compelled to provide free labor to an organization as parasitic and exploitive as WP Engine. I hope you all get what you and WP Engine wanted.” His username on that Slack has been changed to “gone 💀” Mullenweg began to publicly denounce WP Engine in September, calling the web hosting platform a “cancer” to the larger Wordpress open-source project and accusing it of improperly using the WordPress brand. He’s “at war” with WP Engine, in his own words. In October, Mullenweg added a required checkbox at login for WordPres.org, forcing users to agree that they are not affiliated with WP Engine. The checkbox asked users to confirm, “I am not affiliated with WP Engine in any way, financially or otherwise.” The checkbox was still present and required on the WordPress.org login page as of Wednesday morning. Automattic and Mullenweg have 72 hours from the order to take it down, according to the judge’s order. WP Engine sent a cease and desist demanding that he “stop making and retract false, harmful and disparaging statements against WP Engine,” the platform posted on X. Automattic sent back its own cease and desist, saying, “Your unauthorized use of our Client’s intellectual property has enabled WP Engine to compete with our Client unfairly, and has led to unjust enrichment and undue profits.” WP Engine filed a lawsuit against Automattic and Mullenweg, accusing them of extortion and abuse of power. In October, Mullenweg announced that he’d given Automattic employees a buyout package, and 159 employees, or roughly 8.4 percent of staff, took the offer. “I feel much lighter,” he wrote. But shortly after, he reportedly complained that the company was now “very short staffed.” All of this has created an environment of chaos and fear within Automattic and in the wider WordPress open-source community. Within 72 hours of the order, Automattic and Mullenweg are also required to remove the “purported” list of WP Engine customers contained in the ‘domains.csv’ file linked to Automattic’s website wordpressenginetracker.com, which Automattic launched in November and tracks sites that have left WP Engine. It’s also required to restore WP Engine’s access to WordPress.org, including reactivating and restoring all WP Engine employee login credentials to wordpress.org resources and “disable any technological blocking of WPEngine’s and Related Entities’ access to wordpress.org that occurred on or around September 25, 2024, including IP address blocking or other blocking mechanisms.” The judge also ordered Mullenweg to restore WP Engine’s access to its Advanced Custom Fields (“ACF”) plugin directory, which its team said was “unilaterally and forcibly taken away from its creator without consent” and called it a “new precedent” in betrayal of community access. “We are grateful that the court has granted our motion for a preliminary injunction,” a spokesperson for WP Engine told 404 Media. “The order will bring back much-needed stability to the WordPress ecosystem. WP Engine is focused on serving our partners and customers and working with the community to find ways to ensure a vigorous, and thriving WordPress community.” A spokesperson for Automattic told 404 Media: “Today’s ruling is a preliminary order designed to maintain the status quo. It was made without the benefit of discovery, our motion to dismiss, or the counterclaims we will be filing against WP Engine shortly. We look forward to prevailing at trial as we continue to protect the open source ecosystem during full-fact discovery and a full review of the merits.”

The Wordpress War

Photo by Christopher Michel/Creative Commons licensing BitDepth#1481 for October 21, 2024 In September, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of the successful WordPress software ecosystem threw down the gauntlet in a startling battle with WPEngine, a company that uses WordPress as the basis of a managed hosting business that targets customers who want a turnkey experience with…

I reblogged some of the latest Matt Mullenweg drama, so that all of you could be Aware.
It's a shit show that won't stop happening.
The latest drama with our dear CEO of Tumblr and WordPress started with him being upset that WPEngine (a company that offers WP hosting services, not owned by WordPress) was not giving back a portion of their income just because.
And if initially it seemed like there were questionable things done by WPEngine (for example, they changed their stripe payment thingy to their own link instead of the original where the money would go to WordPress), but then Matt has started being weird as always and now nobody fucking likes him 😂
Automattic (owns wordpress and tumblr) basically declared war on WPEngine, stole one of their plugins, added a checkbox to the login form (on wordpress.org, i think) which asks you to confirm that you're not affiliated with WPEngine, etc.
But they're also suing each other now, and it's VERY BAD for open source if Automattic won, because then it would mean that any company that created an open source product (wordpress) can extort and appropriate a portion of revenue earned with it by a different company (wpengine) AND some of the products created by it (like the Advanced Custom Fields plugin) just because the first company owns the website where these are posted.
They are shooting themselves in the dick, because the whole Wordpress community lived and thrived thanks to the ability to make plugins, themes, etc, and sell them. And even though Matt said something along the lines of "oh no, we're okay with other people doing it, just fuck these guys in particular", it's basically a "trust me bro" response, and it won't stop other companies from acting in bad faith.
THIS IS GETTING TOO LONG JUST LIKE THE DRAMA AAAGH and it's just the top of the steaming pile of poopoo that this whole thing is becoming.
Basically, if something bad happens to Tumblr again and it gets sold or killed, we know who to blame.
Open source, my ass.

you know what would be funny? Once WPEngine wins the lawsuit, they buy the tumblr brand and bring it back as a web host.
Basically, I don't think there's going to be an announcement that Tumblr is getting shut down. If the pattern we're seeing holds, I don't even think it's going to happen intentionally. I think Tumblr is going to go out like an early 2000s forum: they're just going to keep cutting the tech support budget until something goes wrong in a way that none of the remaining skeleton crew know how to repair, which could be tomorrow or three years from now. If it does happen, it's probably going to happen completely at random, so there's no point stressing out!

Being a WordPress user, you must know so well what the fastest, easiest and also most favored way to power a professional website with just a little or even no knowledge of coding or web design is. In case you don’t, well, here it is WordPress Hosting Service! If you already possess some HTML skills, it will be easier for you to customize your site, but, again, being clueless is alright, because these hosting service providers will help entirely. Basing on your personal requirements regarding the amount of work you want to carry out with your website, you can look through a variety of choices. There are many companies that provide excellent hosting service, though each one is slightly different from the other. Thus, you might consider it thoroughly before making a decision. Below, I’ve made a collection of the best WordPress hosting service providers in my opinion. Judging was made based on speed, price, support, and many others. Please check out! Bluehost bluehost is already a very famous provider in the field, with the title of Official WordPress.org #1 Choice since 2005. Promising to give users “proven performance, reliability and functionality”, Bluehost has done a very good job so far and been trusted by many. It has such notable features as 24/7 WordPress Support, 1-click WordPress Installation, money-back guarantee, true scalability, etc. Even WordPress itself recommends this provider to its users. What is even greater is that it is now offering a cut in price for WordPress users, starting at $3.49/mo. instead of the old fee of $7.99/mo. Kinsta Kinsta has been on the market for over five years, offering premium managed WordPress hosting services. They host all types of sites, from small blogs all the way up to high traffic enterprises. Powered by Google Cloud Platform and their premium tier network, WordPress users can choose from 18+ global data centers and access to the fastest network on the planet. They provide advanced security features which include free hack fix, daily uptime checks, automatic backups, free SSL and malware scanning. If clients need assistance, they offer 24x7 support 365 days a year from a team of expert WordPress engineers. In addition, they have built their site management platform from the ground up, it's called MyKinsta. WPEngine Claiming to be the best in managed WordPress hosting, WP Engine provides customer services to more than 30,000 clients in 120 countries. The greatest thing about WPEngine is that it has super-fast servers, great technical and customer support. To ensure the speed and smoothness of customers’ site, they have specifically a hosting infrastructure meeting those requirements. The personal plan costs $29/mo. together with a 60-day money-back guarantee. Yes, it does cost a little bit more than other players in the game, but I can ensure you it will be worth it. Flywheel This is a little bit more advanced than the others, as it particularly serves designers and agencies. However, it can also be used by less professional users who wish to develop their websites. Using Flywheel, you will get access to many cool features such as hacker-free security, blazing-fast speeds, reimagined SFTP, nightly back-ups, etc., which are included in what it calls “Rock-solid Hosting”. Customer collaboration is also an ideal feature that you should try. The plan starts at $100 for 10 sites, but you can choose according to your will because there are many other options you might like. Siteground Siteground is one of the oldest hosts in the hosting industry. Siteground possesses plentiful cool features, such as free domain names, 24/7 technical support, etc. The most favorable feature, in my opinion, is that customers can choose a data center according to their temporary location to ensure that the site is loaded as fast as possible. After-Sale care, according to many customers, is amazing. The web hosting package starts at $3.95/mo. and currently is the best-seller pack of the company.
Other packages include Cloud Hosting, which is from $60.00/mo. and Dedicated Hosting, from $229/mo. Hostgator HostGator is known as one of the biggest online hosting companies and the next-generation powerful WordPress optimized hosting. Some amazing points about HostGator include the fast speed, which is 2.5X faster if advanced security, free migration support, unlimited space, and bandwidth. Regarding the packages it covers, HostGator provides customers with a shared, reseller, VPS, and dedicated server packages and these can be purchased by both beginners and professionals. Another wonderful thing about HostGator besides those listed above, its monthly fee is rather cheap, starting at $3.96/mo. DreamHost You must be a newbie if you do not know who Dream Host is. With 2 years in a row being the Business Choice by pcmag.com and having more than 400,000 users worldwide, DreamHost is among the oldest and most well-known hosting brands in the industry. With their custom dashboard, hosting would never be easier, with just a 1-click install, and automatic updates. Let’s look at some numbers to see how popular and good DreamHost is: 400,000+ customers, 1,5+ million websites, 24/7/365 Support, home to 750,000 WordPress installations, and more! DreamHost offers such services as Domains, Web Hosting, VPS Hosting, Dedicated Servers, WordPress Hosting, Cloud Storage, Cloud Computing, etc. with various levels of prices. eHost Take a look at the results Google displays when you search for the keyword “ehost”, and you will be amazed by how good it is rated by customers. Its platform is now hosting over 1 million sites, which proves that this is one very popular and highly trusted hosting service. One of the most outstanding features is the price. Right now it is offering a 50% discount so you can enjoy the service at only $2.75/mo. instead of $5.50/mo. like before. Other features are also worth considering, for example, free domain name, 45 Day money back, free email address, free website builder, free ad credits, etc. There are now three packages for you to opt-out of the most suitable for your personal requirements: the Design Suite, the Marketing Suite, and the Support Suite. JustHost JustHost isn’t many people’s first choice, but it is certainly worth your consideration. It has an easily accessible, easy-to-navigate interface, which can satisfy either personal or business needs. Other good points include a dedicated and virtual private server (VPS) hosting, and of course quality, together with 24/7 phone tech support from justHost’s support team. Another thing that customers love about just host is that its hosting features are inextricably integrated with the customer control panel, making it easier for customers to set up, optimize and promote their websites. What is more, template designs, application installs, even free advertising credits can be achieved through a click of the mouse. iPage With more than 10 years being in the business, you can’t doubt iPage’s experience in satisfying customers. Focusing on three things that customers care about most – website, email, and online security, iPage has many policies concerning these three. For example, using iPage, you are entitled to a Quickstart guide and tutorials for beginners, easy-to-use scripts and applications for your site, partnerships with industry leaders such as Google, VeriSign, and ShopSite. Regarding email, iPage offers unlimited mailboxes and forwards, together with the latest version of AtMail, extensive spam management, as well as upgrades into Exchange hosting for larger organizations. Concerning Security, its Network Operations Center (NOC) is designed to detect security breaches quickly and lockdown any holes as soon as they appear. You won’t believe its fee at the moment: $1.99/mo. Arvixe Being the PCMag Editors' Choice for Web hosting service, Arvixe has an all-around attractive feature set and breezy WordPress importation. Arvixe claims to
provide web hosting with a rare combination of unmatched reliability, quality, and affordability. Right now it has 3 packages to suit your needs: Web Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Hosting. During 13 years being in the game, Arvixe is no doubt. The prices also vary, for example, you can get the Personal Class service with unlimited disk space, unlimited monthly data transfer, and other features for as low as $4/mo. WP Engine If you are looking for a dedicated WordPress hosting service that can deal with all kinds of website issues in no time, then WP Engine can definitely be a sensible decision. As compared to other hosting services, it is expensive. But, you don’t need to worry about the quality of service at all. WP Engine is way better and effective than hundreds of other service providers. One thing that differentiates WP Engine from others is its highly active Customer Support service. In case, you are facing some kind of issues with hosting, WP Engine’s technical support will reach you and encounter the problem quite easily. Site5 Sites that upload long videos and tutorials usually go through page loading errors. This issue distracts a visitor and he ultimately moves to another site for fulfilling his desire. In this situation, services from Site5 can be trusted. It doesn’t matter if you are already attaining hosting solutions from any other provider, Site5 offers free migration. Now, it is something commendable because I haven’t seen any other hosting company offering this much flexibility to its customers. Web Hosting Hub For hosting providers, quick response to client’s queries is extremely crucial. Being a site owner, if you are not provided with efficient services, all your plans can get ruined. To overcome such an issue, services from Web Hosting Hub can be trusted. Just like Site5, Web Hosting Hub also offers free migration to users. Start-ups with less internet marketing experience should grab services from Web Hosting Hub because of it's reliable and top quality hosting solutions. A2 Hosting A website offering valuable services without page loading errors seeks attention. These kinds of sites satisfy their visitors and convert them to potential leads. Similarly, if you don’t want to lose any of your potential customers, then you need to take help from a reliable hosting service. To make it possible, A2 Hosting can be contacted. Although it is not as good as WP Engine and Go Daddy, but can fulfill all your hosting requirements at reasonable prices. Go Daddy Go Daddy, doesn’t need any kind of introduction, does it? If you are stepping into the world of internet marketing and you don’t have much experience and budget, then Go Daddy can turn out to be a legit option. Go Daddy has been offering hosting services to millions of websites for more than a decade, which makes it a trustworthy choice. It offers phenomenal packages to WordPress sites and blogs starting from $3.99/month and the story doesn’t end here. After getting registered, you can utilize numerous captivating themes and plugins from the WordPress repository. Final Thoughts If you want to improve the life and speed of your site, the aforementioned companies are absolutely trusted and can be contacted for tremendous hosting solutions. And then – to solve the issue – WPengine gives me a bunch of IP addresses to block. 🫠 After that, my chat with them developed into this reply: kinda not sure what to say or do exactly ugh Yall…

I’m sorry I’m still not over this he is all but saying South Park dialog to discredit a company that does…….. exactly what Wordpress.com (OWNED BY MATT) does. Actually, in my professional experience with both, Wordpress.com(paid proprietary hosting service, not FOSS, has license to use the name) is severely more limited than wpengine, which is literally just Wordpress (FOSS) with a couple proprietary optimization plugins. For a living, I used to (not anymore) migrate websites between hosting platforms, and with wpengine we could just grab the files and sql dump, throw them up on the new host and disable the wpengine specific plugins, and /sometimes/ make a few tweaks. The company I worked for straight up would not migrate sites away from Wordpress.com because it was too proprietary and 85% of the time would just Not Work on the open source WordPress framework on a shared host. We had an official boilerplate email that we would immediately send to people that paid us to migrate once we found out it was Wordpress.com telling them we wouldn’t do it.
This would be funny if the hamber car fiasco didn’t happen, demonstrating that what would normally be an embarrassing public spectacle as someone squanders their wealth and image and instead he’s going to try to take everyone and everything down with him. It’s been nice poasting with yall, we’ll see how long we can stay here
oh my fucking god matt mullenweg is such a fucking idiot im fucking losing it lmfao

11 Things You Can Do to Increase the Security of Your WooCommerce Store

Keeping your WooCommerce store secure is important. Hackers discover new exploits every day. In fact, more than thirty thousand websites get hacked on a daily basis. Don’t be a part of that statistic. Increase the security of your WooCommerce store before it’s too late.
At Wooassist, we’ve had our fair share of clients that have had their websites hacked. Cleaning up after a hack is a lot of trouble. You have to get rid of the exploit and weed out any remaining backdoors that would allow the hacker to regain access to the hacked site. Worse, a hacking incident can lead to a website being penalized by search engines for containing malware. In this post, we’ll share some tips that you can do right now to increase the security of your WooCommerce store. Following these tips will reduce the odds of your site getting hacked.
1. Check Your Login Information.
Often, hacks happen because of the user’s fault. Almost 90% of cyber-attacks are caused by human error or behavior.
The first step to increase your website’s security is to make sure that your login information is secure. First, don’t use “admin” as your username. Why? Because brute force attacks usually target this username. And if you use admin as your username and have a weak password, it is almost guaranteed that your site will fall victim to a brute force attack. But what if you are already using admin as your username? You’ll just need to create a new administrator account using a unique username and a strong password. WordPress will already recommend a strong password that you can use. After creating a new account, log in to the new account and you can then proceed to delete the “admin” account.
2. Keep your WordPress/WooCommerce Site Updated

Keeping your WooCommerce store updated will protect your site from the latest known vulnerabilities. Developers regularly patch exploits that are found in their systems so it is imperative that you update on a regular basis.
Before updating however, it is important to test your updates first on a development site or at least create a backup. Often, updates can break your site and this can harm your conversion rates if you don’t have a backup that you can revert to. Websites breaking due to site updates are common. Some hosting providers such as WPEngine provide their customers an easy-to-set-up staging environment. Here you can test your updates before applying them to your live site.
3. Use Two-Factor Authentication.
Using 2-factor authentication greatly increases the security of your website. Even when a brute force attack manages to get into your site, you can block the hack with two-factor authentication. Unless the hackers get a hold of your phone, you’re safe.
4. Install a Security Plugin
A WordPress/WooCommerce site without a security plugin is like a computer without anti-virus software. Wordfence and Sucuri Security are some good options. Just install the plugins and then activate. After activating, just go to the plugin’s settings and configure depending on your needs.

5. Limit Login Attempts.
Limiting login attempts will deter brute force attacks. A brute force attack will attempt to guess your username and password sending hundreds if not thousands of requests every minute. Limiting login attempts pretty much renders brute force attacks powerless unless you have a weak password. There are a couple plugins that can help you limit login attempts such as Login Lockdown.
6. Protect your wp-config File
The wp-config file is a crucial part of the WordPress ecosystem. It contains important configuration information of your WordPress site which is why many hackers try to target this file. There is however a workaround to block intruders from getting access to this file. Simply place this code in your .htaccess file.

7. Hide Login Error Messages
Whenever you enter the wrong login credentials on WordPress, it returns an error message saying your username is wrong, your password is wrong, or your password does not match the username. You may think little of this, but for hackers, this bit of information is priceless. You can prevent hackers from getting clues on your WordPress logins. You can hide these error messages by adding the script below to your functions.php file. Do note however that making a mistake when tinkering with your functions.php file can cause your entire site to go down. Unless, you’re a web developer or know your way around the file, it is recommended to have a developer do this for you.

8. Hide WordPress Version

For hackers, discovering that your WordPress version is outdated is like finding a gold mine. So it is imperative that you always update to the latest version of WordPress. Many hosting providers will automatically update your WordPress version. However, this is not always ideal since automatic updates can mess up your site. If you’d like to do your WordPress updates at your own pace, then you should hide your WordPress version. To hide your WordPress version, paste the following code on your functions.php file.

9. Do a Plugin Audit
A plugin audit is a process of reviewing the plugins installed on your site. You’ll want to look out for plugins that are no longer being updated by the developer. Outdated plugins usually become backdoors for hackers. When analyzing your plugins, you can categorize them in a number of ways.
Plugins that you want to keep.
Plugins that you don’t use or your customer’s don’t use. If you have a plugin that adds a certain functionality to your site but your customers are not using it, you might as well get rid of it. This just adds extra bloat to your site.
Plugins that are no longer being updated by the plugin author. This is a major security threat and you should get rid of these immediately. If you still need the functionality that the plugin provides, just find an alternative plugin. Just make sure that the new plugin is being constantly updated.
You can do a plugin audit every few months to keep your site spiffy clean.
10. Install Only Reliable Plugins
You’ve done your plugin audit. Great! Now, don’t go down the same road. Don’t just install any plugin that you find. Look at the plugin rating. Check reviews. Check when the plugin was last updated. If the plugin fails any of those three elements, consider finding something else.
11. Prevent Directory Access
If you do not block directory access on your WordPress site, users may be able to freely view the files on your site. These files may contain sensitive information that hackers can use to exploit vulnerabilities on your site. Disabling directory access can be done with a minor tweak. Just place the following code in your .htaccess file:

If you’ve done all these things, your WooCommerce store will be protected from most known threats. Should you need help getting any of these done, you can contact the Wooassist team and we’ll be able to help you out.
Do you know of any other things that you can do to help keep your WooCommerce store more secure? Let us know in the comments.
