Mariage by Wau Wau Collectif
Wau Wau Collectif’s second album, Mariage, is instilled with a newfound sense of purpose. Expanding upon the inspirational themes of their acclaimed 2021 debut, Yaral Sa Doom (Educate The Young), this long-distance collaboration from musicians in Senegal, led by Aurora Kane, and Sweden’s Karl Jonas Winqvist is an even more stylistically expansive affair. Joyful children’s songs collide with fuzzy guitar solos and thumping hip-hop beats. Shimmering synths lift off from the plunky percussion of the balafon and versatile sounds of the 22-string kora. Familiar voices from the first album return with more explicitly political lyrics, while the music feels both rhythmically dense and sonically weightless, flowing from one spellbinding moment to the next. Some of the rhythms that laid the foundation for Wau Wau Collectif’s second album were recorded during Winqvist's 2018 Senegal trip that ignited the project, with a core group of musicians who may now be familiar to fans of their debut. These include flute master Ousmane Ba, whose softly rippling tone punctuates the bounce of “Necessaire” and frantically dances throughout “Mariage Force.” On “Baye Kate”, rapper Babacar “Babadi” Diol growls and rolls his Rs over swirling synths in a heartfelt tribute to farmers. Arouna Kane’s echo-drenched vocals return on “Le repair spirituel,” before he removes all effects on intimate closer “Liguey Len,” strumming so quietly that you can hear cars honking and crickets chirping in the background. For Mariage, band members from each country were inspired to include a wider array of instrumental flourishes unique to their cross-continental collaboration. “Yay Balma” revolves around the cycling riffs of Jango Diabaté’s xalam guitar, as this song’s fuzzy tones and soaring sax solos open side two with a bang. “Pitchi Goubidi” provides a stark contrast, with the kora played like a harp and Gilbert Badji’s gravelly lyrics about “the bird of the night” disappearing into dubbed-out chamber pop. Winqvist’s omnichord hovers back into focus on “Yonou Natangue,” a free-floating jam that maintains the messages of Wau Wau Collectif’s debut, promoting youth education to address the social issues facing contemporary Senegal: “Peace is the better wealth / The way to wander.” Sadly, flute player Ousmane Bah passed away after the completion of the album. Wau Wau Collectif wishes to dedicate Mariage to his memory. -Jesse Locke クレジット2022年11月11日リリース

Wau Wau Collectif — Yaral Sa Doom (Sahel Sounds)
Tumblr media
Yaral Sa Doom by Wau Wau Collectif
Educate the young. To citizens of the West, this concept is banal. But to a small fishing village in Senegal, it is an important focus, the central theme to their art. The village in question is called Toubab Dialaw, and it’s actually not far from the nation’s capital city of Dakar. Perhaps that is the reason the hamlet has become a lodestone for Senegalese artists, poets and musicians. It also draws creative types from abroad. Swedish musician and producer Karl Jonas Winqvist travelled there in 2018, collaborating with the locals, improvising, and putting together the basis for what would become Wau Wau Collectif and their debut album Yaral Sa Doom. The title translates to “educate the young,” connecting the music to a core ethos of its creators.
More than 20 musicians contributed to these recordings, which were further worked over by Winqvist and Senegalese engineer Arouna Kane. The two collaborated to assemble the base material into a juicy amalgam of West African rhythms and soothing electronic sounds. The Swede does his best to blend into the scenery, letting the performers shine. The eponymous opening track leads off with a barely audible synth pad that fades out as a percussionist and vocalist enter and hold court. Winqvist’s contributions seem to be wistfulness and ethereality, fond memories of being among friends. You get the sense that everyone involved had a great time making this music.
The voices of children add to the uplifting atmosphere of Yaral Sa Doom. On “Mouhamodou Lo and His Children,” the weathered voice of a local cab driver plays call-and-response with the innocent piping of his kids. A loping rhythm and lonely guitar drift along behind them. This is intergenerational magic that is as touching as it is pleasant to listen to. A chorus of adults and children chant the eponymous phrase on “Yaral Sa Doom II,” which is one of the more playful and electrified tracks on the album. Electronic drums somehow manage not to stand out amidst all the activity: flutes, saxophone, organ, and many voices all mingle over the digital rhythm.
A hand-drawn map of Senegal, created by artist Babacar Pouye, graces the cover of this demonstration of inter-continental collectivism. The artwork reflects the people who created this work. On the surface, it’s the border-dissolving wizardry of technology that enables collaborations like Yaral Sa Doom, but in truth it’s the human participants that provide the spirit of artistic collaboration.
