The new animal shelter is opening up in my town and I’m thinking of volunteering a couple times a week with my little one, mum, and sister.

My daughter and I are cooped up in our house during the week, so I think it’ll be nice to get us out of the house and help with animals from our community.

Meet Willem ❤️ Willem is a little boy mouse that we met at our local #Petco yesterday. There was a sign on the mouse enclosure stating the store had a little guy with “cosmetic imperfections” and “patchy fur” on discount. I inquired about him to the sales associate and she was super excited I was interested in taking him (she knows me and Cheeks lol!). It was then explained to me that the tag on the cage was pretty misleading... the real story was that Willem had been a runt and his littermates had turned on him. They mauled poor Willem—taking off the tip of his tail, chunks of his fur, and finally clawing out his eyes. While Cheeks and Squeaks does adamantly work to keep people from buying animals from pet stores for many reasons, this guy needed out. He was adopted out to me as a rescue. I will also say that our Petco does truly care about their animals and always works within their power to do the right thing. The store associated did take the initiative to separate him from his cagemates and put him on antibiotics for his injuries. They appear to have healed as much as they can, but our amazing vet will have the last word on that! Willem is still really weak and frail, but we will do whatever it takes to make sure his quality of life is as high as possible from here on out. I also have to get on my soapbox and remind people that male mice, like Syrian hamsters, should never be housed together. Mice are incredibly social animals, but males can and will fight, often to horrific ends like poor Willem. Some people opt to house them alone, but I will forever recommend having them neutered to live with a colony of females. If Willem is ever healthy enough to have that surgery, that is what we will do. But for now, we are focusing on his wellness journey. So please, remember Willem and keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Loss my heart....

A wonderful spirit she was.... no matter the stress of the day, I could depend on her wagging tail and nudges for my hand to rub her constantly when I arrived at home. Time passed and age got the best of her..... sadly the door greetings became few because of the ailments that wouldn't allow her to be there.....but the wagging tail was still present - and it let me know how bad she wanted to be there but couldn't. I love her.....I will ALWAYS love her. The decision to let her go was gut wrenching and I've cried so much and wondered if we made the right decision. My husband and I gave her the best life we could.... she's been on numerous vacations, the Marriott's front desk staff are definitely familiar with her..... accompanying her ailments on our last few trips to make sure she was close to the door so we would have ease of letting her out. She was the best.....she gave us great memories for 12 years....I'm happy to know that she's in doggy heaven, running freely with no more ailments. Her spirit will always be in ours hearts and she will forever be our family. We love you forever Tess. Double AC
