Richie Culver finds faith in Create A Lifestyle Around Your Problems
Richie Culver finds faith in Create A Lifestyle Around Your Problems
Filmmaker and Participant Records co-founder William Markarian-Martin captures iconoclast, outsider artist Richie Culver at his mother’s home near Hull, revisiting the home town he spent his entire young adult life trying to escape. The concrete clatter of ‘Create A Lifestyle Around Your Problems’ and the resonant barrage of MRI machine churning, I Was Born by the Sea swells into the beating…

BEST OF 2017: SONGS OF THE YEAR (PART 2)
This year’s SONGS OF THE YEAR list is compiled of tasty tracks from albums that didn’t make the TOP TEN Albums cut, press play & enjoy….
youtube
THE DANCING PLAGUE OF 1518
“HESITATION”
CRASS LIPS
THE DANCING PLAGUE OF 1518, the Spokane based project of Conor Knowles revels in the aesthetically pleasing sounds of darkwave and Goth-Pop, as “Hesitation” mashes these choice genre tags, while forging a clear path into his psyche.
A one-man unit, Knowles sees his vision filtered through apprehension inducing post-punk and a wall of synthesizers. The Dancing Plague of 1518 borrows just as much from modern day peers as it does from the goth forefathers of yore, carving out its own niche.
“HESITATION” starts off somberly, with a fixed beat and warm hum, allowing the anxiety to kick in through shrieking synth notes, before once settling back into a groove as Knowles’ booming voice enters the fray and nervously lulls you into a state of calm. However, this tranquil state was never meant to last, that’s not the way The Plague operates, as “Hesitation” sees his voice has rising to the occasion  alongside the jarring blare of processed keys....

EXPLODED VIEW
“SUMMER CAME EARLY”
SACRED BONES
Director: William Markarian-Martin
EXPLODED VIEW have just made my morning a whole helluva lot better thanks to their fresh new single “SUMMER CAME EARLY.”
The Mexico City based group (Annika Henderson, Martin Thulin, Hugo Quezada, & Amon Melgarejo) offer up a hazy nugget, as “Summer Came Early” revolves around an echoed snare, cyclical guitar hook, and moody synth. Henderson’s voice, as narco-dripped as ever, becomes the focal point as the lads stretch out over a bed of minimalist psych rock.
Press play and follow Exploded View as they continue their ascent via a Jefferson airplane…

FLEET FOXES
“ON ANOTHER OCEAN (JANUARY / JUNE)”
NONESUCH
FLEET FOXES triumphantly in 2017 with dynamic ‘Crack-Up’ and with it the emotionally charged “ON ANOTHER OCEAN (JANUARY / JUNE).”
Starting off on a somber January lull, “On Another Ocean” works the slow build to perfection as Robin Pecknold’s voice is in top form over a sparse bed of piano until the halfway mark reveals a sprawling June back-half push. One of the most gorgeous arrangements the Seattle based group has ever produced, which is really saying something (and the way the track bleeds into the equally moving “Fool’s Errand” is a thing of beauty).
Hearing this song live really cemented its brilliance, as its power was magnified even further. Fleet Foxes are the masters of intricate Americana, using harmonies and intricate instrumentation, setting them apart from the legions of shitty faux-folkies that emerged in their wake. Welcome back Foxes......

THE FRESH & ONLYS
‘WOLF LIE DOWN’
SINDERLYN
This is a big THE FRESH & ONLYS house here, and Wymond Miles is essentially a demigod around these parts, so when I discovered the group were revving up for a new LP, I was beyond psyched. Well, after having spent some time with the band’s sixth proper album ‘WOLF LIE DOWN’ I can safely say that my joyous feelings were warranted.
With former members Shayde Sartin, Kyle Gibson, James Kim, and James Barone lending their talents, the Onlys sound…….fresh again. ‘Wolf Lie Down’ showcases a renewed band, as its two core members have saddled back up after a stretch of solo outings to create some charged up and pure rock n’ roll under The Fresh & Onlys moniker.
“DANCING CHAIR” is a chugging rocker with a infectiously slow melody encased in a rising song structure and is one of the album’s true standouts, as Cohen ponders “what have I been running from….what have been waiting for.” Its a plaintive song filled with the duality of fuzz and clean accoustic six-string and one helluva vocal performance from Cohen.
When all is said and done, the world is a better place when The Fresh & Onlys are creating and exporting, so be happy that Cohen & Miles are still alive & kicking….

HOLY GRAY
“YEARS OF POINTLESS HEART”
THIRD COMING
HOLY GRAY toe the line between punk and straight up big Alt-Rock and are quite apt at combining the two as heard on the fantastic “YEARS OF POINTLESS HEART.”
The Paris based group create huge canorous rock songs that hark back to the days of punk influenced 90’s alternative rock, which seems to have found its way back into the modern indie scene. At times heavy, at times melodic, but always surging forward, “Years Of Pointless Heart” is a fist pumping six-string anthem. Sticks slam onto drum skins, while colliding into guitars that are hell-bent on creating as much noise as possible as distant vocals fight to for their life to be heard.
If you like guitars, press play….
