A gale ripped through the forest, its eerie howl echoing around Windmere Castle. The snow had returned several weeks ago, but now the storms had begun to roll in. As the temperature dropped significantly, the days got cloudier and the winds more severe. Aquila’äq had busied himself in ending the pointless war, the same that had taken countless lives and time. If he kept it going for petty reasons… he simply did not deserve to be king. 

A fire crackled in the hearth as he completed his paperwork, rolling up the parchment and stamping it with the seal. The North star. It was the beauty of the Northland, largest in the sky– it could easily be seen at nearly all times of year, like a beacon beyond the atmosphere. Ironically enough, it was also the only star that Angrath shared with Earth. It had been his connection back home, back when he’d ended up there for the first time. How, he didn’t exactly understand. He shoulders that train of thought, having thunk it countless times before. There was no need now to rehash it, not when exhaustion had ringed his eyes and taxed his strength. 

He was no alien here. This was his land, filled with the icy tundras and the towering beasts within the forests. Greatbears, wastewolves and graceful stags. Little squirrels and voles, foxes and mink. There were too many to account for. The king smiles wryly, listening as a log shifts in the hearth. Slowly, he rises, pushing back his chair and placing his hands on his desk. He sighs, dropping his head. For a moment, all he could do was stare down at his hands. They’d become weathered, in his thirty-fourth year– soon to be thirty-fifth. Scars criss crossed his tan skin, telling the same tales as the ones across his torso and biceps. There was his family heirloom, the heavy obsidian ring stamped with their sigil. Pjollaris. Another was nested between his index and ring finger, its white gold a contrast to his skin. It was engraved with runes. A promise. 

He straightens up to his full height, leaving the room with haste. There was still time in the day– barely three hours– he did not want to waste any more of it. He feels the ring against his cool skin, as if pushing him onwards. Corridor after corridor, closing the distance between him and his betrothed. Lanfen. He expects to find her with her head bent over a desk, studiously preparing herself for the coming responsibilities. She frightened him, at times, her ability to speak his own language now as if she lived here her entire life. Not only that, but she spoke as if she were a scholar– something her tall counterpart still had difficulty to maintain. He tired easily of conversation where it was not necessary, while she picked it up with ease at the meetings. 

His stoic expression softens, the corner of his lips turning upwards ever so slightly. He looked almost wolfish, austerity replaced by something much lighter. Aquila’äq pushes open the door to the library, an eager gaze searching the room before it lands on her. The vision in his mind’s eye of her studying had been all too accurate– it was all she did, these days. 

“Woman,” he greets softly, stopping to rest his hand on the back of her chair. “What are you doing?”
