World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), celebrated annually on 10 September, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The event represents a global commitment to focus attention on suicide prevention.
The theme of WSPD 2022, “Creating hope through action,” reflects the need for collective, action to address this urgent public health issue. All of us- family members, friends, co-workers, community members, educators, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, political officials and governments- can take action to prevent suicide in the Region.

World Suicide Prevention Day
World Suicide Prevention Day is an annual cognizance day which is held on 10th September every year around the world to promote worldwide action to prevent suicide through many activities and events. These activities and events are also held for enhanced awareness about suicide that it is a preventable cause of premature death.
History of World Suicide Prevention Day
World Suicide Prevention Day was first celebrated in 2003, and every year held on 10th September as an IASP initiative. World Health Organization (WHO) co-sponsors this event. World Health Organization (WHO) co-sponsors the World Suicide Prevention Day event with the following aims:
Raise awareness about suicide that it is preventable
Spread information about suicide awareness.
Reduce stigmatization regarding suicide
Make better education about suicide.
An evaluated that one million people or about one person in 10,000 is died by suicide every year or around 3000 people every day. Suicide is a significant preventable cause of ultimate death which is affected by psychosocial, cultural and environmental risk elements that can be stopped through global responses that address these main endanger factors. Many people die from suicide as compared to murder and war. It becomes the 13th leading cause of death around the world. According to WHO, twenty people have attempt suicide at a rate of approximately one every three seconds. Suicide becomes the most common cause of death for people aged 15 – 24. Until 2020, the number of people who die by suicide will be expected to reach up to 1.5 million.
