The final remaining issue from the acti-split. Seasonal Disconnection.

I had a thought today about the Xpac/Seasonal split between content drops in Destiny 2. I’ve thought for a long time that perhaps there are many people who play D2 that are not experienced with MMO content cycles and the way that developers support their Xpac content. Perhaps I’m misreading that situation but given how people online seem to react to most anything Bungie does nowadays i can’t help but wonder. Overall I do think that we have a community based issue/misunderstanding but I also think that Bungie kinda feeds the wolves on this one by misrepresenting what seasons are meant to do.

Destiny 2 currently drops an annual expansion with 3.5 seasons (I’ll talk about this later) to support it. With World of Warcraft (my other main MMO) as my main example, I want to draw some parallels. World of Warcraft has set a lot of examples for MMOs, especially in the form of content drops which are based on patch numbers (BFA was 8.0-8.3//Legion was 7.0-7.3.5//Warlords was 6.0-6.3.5) and even FF14 follows almost the exact same pattern, but up to x.5.

With D2, we can say that Shadowkeep by the end will have been from 3.0-3.3.5. I include the .5 because throughout Shadowkeep we have gotten an event about 2/3 of the way through the season that wraps up the main content and provides a renewed avenue of progression to finish the season off, much like the .5 patches of WoW.

With Both D2 and WoW having at one time been published by Activision and the fact that they have in the past set unrealistic expectations or even force restarted development on Destiny releases, I think it’s reasonable to say that both games strategies may have become more aligned that originally thought (look at armor 2.0 vs the corruption armor system from 8.3). To put it simply, I think that the final remaining issue in Destiny 2 from their time with Activision is that the seasons too closely resemble previous Destiny DLC releases, specifically the D1 Xpacs.

On one hand, I think the loss of both support studios can be cited as a good reason for Bungie not being able to make seasons as substantial as they were during Forsaken. In fact they literally said as much last year in Luke Smith’s first Directors Cut series. However this just leads me to frustration that they didn’t slow the release cadence.

On the other hand, I find it insanely confusing and almost insulting as an MMO player that I have to observe so many people expressing frustration with the seasonal system as a concept. There seems to be a lot of players who are convinced each season is a new xpac instead of a patch, and in a way I think Bungie actually fuels this belief by having none of the seasons directly interact with Shadowkeep’s story and content while still framing seasonal threats as being on the same scale as an Xpac big bad (Ghaul/Riven/Pyramids).

This exact problem has been an ever increasing issue in WoW for multiple expansions now. While in WoW; things like the war campaign help bridge story gaps and maintain flow from one content patch to another, Destiny 2 only really has the lore drops on Bungie.net to do that.

I think to fix this issue, Bungie needs to make seasons much more intertwined with the story of the expansion. I think Armor 2.0′s seasonal mods are a step in that direction in terms of game play, but overall we haven’t had any additions to endgame PvE since Garden of Salvation dropped. Trials and soon Grandmaster Nightfall Ordeals are welcome additions to the game, but even Trials in on the brink because of poor loot acquisition choices and GNO’s are just more of the same strikes with even more purely negative modifiers which I think will inevitably cause the same reaction as the Prestige Leviathan where people get upset over having no choices in play style due to strict modifiers.

Moving Forward, I do have high hopes for how Bungie will handle this issue. Luke Smith’s most recent Director’s Cut post seems to communicate that Aspiration will be returning to the game in a big way, and given the very iterative nature of Destiny thus far I think this philosophy with bleed through just the next Xpac and hopefully into more connected and smoother seasons. I think the biggest improvement Bungie could make given the current structure we have is to Reduce the number of seasons per Xpac to 3 instead of 4 both to give players more breathing time between content drops and to also give Bungie the time they need to make these seasons as great as possible. Xpac based story or content beats every or some seasons would probably also be insanely helpful; very close second place.

To any of my web app developer followers.

Shot in the dark here. This will be a long post so please bare with me.

A few days ago it was the anniversary of the death of one of my best friends, someone who I only knew over the internet and through World of Warcraft. I made a fairly long reddit post about it and how I believe we need a place to memorialize the friends we made over the years that we made in games and online, to catalogue our experiences with them and leave behind a piece of our relationships with those who are no longer with us that we never really got to meet in real life.

The issue is that I am not a developer. Administration, moderation and various other website maintenance issues? That’s my area. I want to create a not-for-profit place where we can leave memorial to our internet/gaming friends who touched our lives but we had to say goodbye to far too soon.

For prosperity here is the story that prompted this, I’ll put the rest of the post below a read more. If any of this interests you, please read on.

For four years of my life my best friend was a girl named Jen (obviously real name redacted.) 2006-2010 we would play WoW together most every day, raided together, played 2v2s/3v3s together and spent hours on Skype, Teamspeak, Vent, etc either by ourselves or with our other guildmates. Both part of the same top-3 PvE progression guild on our server and fairly well known therein.

Jen was the very definition of a best friend to me. We never met up in real life because we were both mid-late teenagers with literally no money, we planned to hang out for the first time at Blizzcon 2012 (would have been pushed to 2013 little to our knowledge.) Despite the distance, we were inseperable and I couldn't imagine us ever losing touch... Except we did.

Patch 3.3.2 hit, it was insubstantial but she never missed a patch day. But Jen didn't log in that day. Jen didn't log in the next week. A a few months went on, 3.3.5 (a patch with real content) hit... But still no sign of my Gnome Rogue BFF.

Her alts, her Skype, her forum accounts social media... Everything. It all fell silent. It took me a year to finally get ah-old of her mother by phone who eventually told me she had been hospitalized the night before she vanished forever.

Cancer. Of course it was fucking cancer. Suddenly her sporadic usage of video and voice chat made perfect sense. Needless to say... She didn't recover. Or rather, she did... For a time. But she was never herself again and refused further treatment. In-fact she had apparently been refusing treatment for over half a year at that point. Officially she passed away on the 24th of January, Eeight years ago. It took 21 days that cunt to finish her off. She always was tenacious, and she always will be in my mind.

I don't know why she never told me, maybe she cared too much, maybe she was too scared to admit something like that in the world she used to escape from reality. I just wish I had known so I had some way of saying goodbye, of telling her I would never forget her, telling her that she had helped me through some of the hardest years of my life and I would always, always love her for that. But knowing her she would have called me a scrub and rocket boot-glidered away from whatever perch we were on at the time.

I didn't take many screenshots back then. I hate myself for that. I only have one, from the day we made our way past the invisible wall atop the Eastern Plaguelands to an "unreachable" part of the map and found a random Blood Elf male just chilling. Naturally we assumed our coveted 3 minute Furblog forms and communicated as best we could. We were very, very dedicated to our Furblog roleplay.

I don't have much to remember my best friend by any more. At least once a year, usually the date of her death, I would visit her World of Warcraft armory page... But that's gone now. Her account has been inactive for too long so it's not worth preserving her character profile from a purely administrative standpoint. But from a human standpoint?

WoW is an old, old game now. We've all had friends come and go, many of you may have had similar experiences to me where a good friend or guild mate passed away and now their records are aught but destroyed. How many accounts out there belong to the deceased? To the friends we made and have passed away? I know there are a lot of you out there with stories similar to mine.

How many other cases like mine are there out there? Not just in video games, but online in general. People who died suddenly, who were loved by their friends and communities but - day by day - what is left of their online presence is fading.

I don’t have the skills to do it myself. It would end up 100% manually updated with no automation or grace to the design were I to do so.

So, I want to find a partner to produce this with me along with volunteers who can help me moderate applications further down the line. I can’t promise payment, not to begin with, nor would I be taking any myself.

I’m not asking anyone to work for exposure or any scummy shit like that here, I believe it would be highly amoral to profit off what are essentially online obituaries for internet friends. Any money the website may make through ad revenue or the like would be put directly back into improving the site (at which point I may be able to offer payment for continued and past development.)

Should the website exceed it’s hosting and development costs those funds would either be saved for future development or donated to a worthy cause. I’m not looking to make money here, I just want us all to have a place to go where we may mourn our lost friends and reminisce on our time together.

Facebook has it’s Memorialize feature and that is essentially what I’m aiming for here. A place to memorialize the friends we met online who touched our lives, share stories of them and... Maybe most importantly of all, show their families that they touched more lives in more ways than they likely even knew about.

But, if any of you have some skill in web development and would be interested in donating your time to a project such as this, perhaps drop me a line? I can explain in more detail what my plans are then.
