2. Bushkill Falls

High up in the Pocono Mountains, the crystal clear water of a narrow stream tumbles down the cliffs and makes its way to the Delaware River far, far below.

The stream sped up as it ran toward the first of the eight, Pennell Falls, continuing through the narrow Glen Glen and upper canyon until it fell down a 100-foot-high cliff, creating Main-coated waterfall. rate. It forms a beautiful, deep, cool lake surrounded by ferns and flowers before dropping an additional 70 feet.

The whole area is intersected with narrow trails and observation areas that offer an unforgettable day of exploring and spectacular views. Get a map of the trails to find the one that appeals most to you.

If you're lucky, you might spot many birds living in this lush area. Wild animals like black bears, foxes, and bobcats are there too but are more elusive. After your hike, you might want to relax with a paddleboat ride, play a game of mini-golf, or sit on a bench and feed the ducks.

3. Hickory Run State Park, Pocono Mountains

Hickory Run State Park, located in Carbon County, stretches over 15,990 acres in the forested western foothills of the Pocono Mountains. The park is popular for Boulder Field, a flat area covered with large, round boulders that look like the surface of the Moon.

Sand Spring Lake has a lovely swimming beach and a golf course, and this is one of the three fixed points for orientation courses. The area includes hundreds of picnic tables, playground equipment, and restrooms.

Many streams and lakes in the park are great for brook and brown trout fishing, and hikers can enjoy more than 44 miles of trails. Some of the trails are permitted for cross-country skiing and others for snowmobiling in the winter.

The best time for hiking is June when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. The park is also popular for Geocaching, high tech treasure hunting with the use of GPS.

4. Poconos PA: No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum

Experience firsthand the dark world of coal mining by visiting No. 9 Coal Mine, the oldest continuously running anthracite coal mine in Lansford, Pennsylvania, 1600 feet into the mountainside.

The mine operated from 1855 to 2002, when it was closed and converted into a tourist attraction and museum. Trained and experienced guides will take you on a walking tour deep into the mountain and tell you the horror stories of the lives our ancestors who worked as miners had to endure.

You will see the original 900-foot deep elevator shaft that was used to haul coal cars to the surface, a miner’s hospital, and the underground mule-way. The museum is located in the former miners’ shanty and it contains original tools such as picks, drills, shovels, saws, axes, blasting tools, and even miners’ caps, lamps, and lunch cans.

5. Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark, The Poconos

To say that Great Wolf Lodge is kid and family-friendly is a gross understatement. Located in Scotrun, a small town between Mount Pocono and Tannersville, this resort is all about family fun.

It starts with the hotel suites that have ‘wolf dens’ and kiddy camps with kiddy bed bunks. And then there is a large, water park that operates year-round to entertain the whole family with thrilling rides, water slides, swimming pools, etc.

Enter Fort Mackenzie to get splashed and soaked until you escape through the Totem Tower slide. Dare to try Hydro Plunge, a roller coaster made of water. Let the kids go crazy and escape to the North Hot Spring soothing warm pool where no kids are allowed. Wherever you go, the temperature is a perfect 84 degrees even if it is snowing outside.

6. Poconos weekend getaway: Promised Land State Park

High on the Pocono Plateau, over 1,800 feet above sea level, Promised Land State Park is 3,000 acres of a natural wonderland. It is surrounded by over 12,464 acres of Delaware State Forest, densely covered with oak, beech, hemlock, and maple. It includes two lovely lakes, one with a well-equipped picnic area, a popular starting point for exploring the area.

The area is located in a picturesque forest next to the Promised Lake and has a playground, water, sand volleyball court, basketball court, and two sandy beaches. Concessions nearby provide boat rentals.

Both Promised Land Lake and Lower Lake are great for taking a slow canoe trip, and if you are a fisherman, try your hand at catching some bass, pickerel, yellow perch, or catfish.

Hikers have 50 miles of trails that intersect the Promised Land State Park and the Delaware State Forest for exploration, nature study, bird watching, or just reveling in the pure joy of magnificent nature. Don’t forget to stop at the Masker Museum with interesting natural history displays, including mounted animals.

7. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm

The Quiet Valley Life History Farm seeks to preserve Germany's unique heritage in Pennsylvania. Guides dressed in traditional clothing re-enact scenes from daily farm life for visitors and provide information about the founder of the farm, Johann Depper.

The expansive farm includes pastures, streams, and forested areas, and goats, cows, horses, sheep, chickens, pigs, and other animals roam the 114-acre area. Visitors can walk through a vintage farmhouse, a cabin, a smokehouse, and a handful of little barns.

10. Eckley Miners' Village, Poconos

Eckley Miner's Village was a bustling center of activity from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. The central part of the village consists of a museum, two churches, a sports club building, a company store, and some outstanding houses. At the visitor's center, guests watch a video that explains the hardships of mining life as well as the history of the village.

The churches and social club give visitors a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the miners who lived in Eckley Village, along with their families. How to Make the Most of a Guided Western Hunt

The muley buck was staring directly at me. His tall, dark antlers stood out against the backdrop of sage grass and showcased four nearly-symmetrical tines on each side. He turned his head and revealed a small droptine falling from his right antler. The crosshairs of my scope wavered over his vitals, and my finger lightly touched the trigger. One gentle squeeze would transform him from present to past.

But my instincts said no. The buck stood 150 yards away, and a prone shooting position offered me a rock-solid rest. He would make a fine trophy and provide a freezer full of meat, but that didn’t stop my gut from saying “don’t pull the trigger.”

“Take him when you’re ready,” Clint, my guide, whispered.

“I’m going to pass on this one,” I said. My cheek still resting on the stock, eyes glued to the buck. “I didn’t work hard enough for him.”

Passing Shots

It was November, prime time to be chasing muley bucks over the rolling plains and through the dense forests of Colorado. A musky scent hung in the air as big-bodied bucks ignored all of their innate instincts for self-preservation to focus on breeding. The rut was in full force, leaving no shortage of tall-tined antler sightings.

Clint’s confusion was obvious and understandable. Weren’t we trying to kill a big buck?

Yes, we were. But we had spotted this brute from the road. No hiking had been required, and the stalk consisted of a 40-yard crawl. As my rifle hung over his vitals, it crossed my mind that this buck deserved more respect than that.

This wasn’t the first time I had passed on a respectable animal during a guided hunt—and probably won’t be my last. A black bruin roaming a dirt road in British Columbia would walk away unscathed; a trophy free-range axis deer made his way silently into thick cover, never to be seen again; a Wyoming antelope followed his does into the glare of a setting sun. And over the next week in Colorado, two more mule deer bucks would live to see another day.

Make It Yours

Great opportunities can come from hunting with outfitters. It gives those of us passionate about the game we pursue better odds to walk away with a freezer full of meat and a trophy to hang on the wall. Access to private land and expert individuals who are familiar with the terrain is an advantage in the sport. But their main concern is to help you get an animal on the ground.

A trek West to experience these thrills may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Don’t waste it. Make it your hunt, one that will leave you with memories to tell around the campfire for years to come. Here are a few ways to turn your dream hunt into a great adventure.

“Let’s Hike!”

Trucks and utility vehicles are useful tools. When you have hundreds of acres to cover, they make getting from point A to point B easier and give you a greater opportunity of seeing more game. But they also eliminate a large part of the hunt experience.

On multiple occasions, instead of intently scanning for game, I was lolled to slumber by the hum of the engine. In one instance, after three hours of driving switchback roads through the mountains of British Columbia with my guide Gary, my eyes had glazed over and I stared absent-mindedly out the window. When we finally spotted a mature boar shuffling down the middle of the road, I respectfully passed. Half-asleep with no miles logged was not how I wanted my once-in-a-lifetime British Columbia hunt to end. I wanted to feel the burn in my legs, sweat down my back, and straps of a pack filled with meat and hide cutting into my shoulders.

Instead, I politely asked to spot and stalk. Gary’s eyes lit up. He was more than happy to oblige. He was an avid sheep hunter, and spot-and-stalk hunting was his preference. He just didn’t know it was mine as well.

For the next three days we drove to different locations, leaving the truck behind and trudging into the forest, hiking multiple miles a day, experiencing the rough terrain of British Columbia. A simple request allowed me to crawl within 30 yards of a sow, watch cubs climb trees in the backcountry, and take aim at a big boar that had stormed out of the woods in response to our animal distress call.

Let your guides know how you prefer to hunt. If you’re a spot-and-stalk hunter, speak up. If you prefer a blind, let them know. Outfitters want most of all to ensure you experience the hunt of a lifetime—but they can’t read your mind.

Work Together

Three of us knelt atop a sandy, cactus-strewn hill, glassing the expansive Wyoming landscape for specs of white, hoping to spot wary antelope from afar.

“Isn’t that a lone buck lying in the middle of that field?” my friend and hunting partner Natalie asked. Willie, our guide, and I turned to look in the direction she had indicated. Sure enough, the black horns of the goat were undeniable. The cold October wind stung our faces as we huddled to discuss a game plan. Together, we threw out ideas on how best to make our way undetected to the buck. Working as a team, our hunt ended in a four-mile stalk, 200-yard belly crawl, a buck in my freezer, and a sense of fulfillment that I had helped call the shots on my hunt.

There were times when being guided that I felt detached from the hunt, as if I were following behind someone else who was hunting and I was there just to pull the trigger. My guides weren’t sharing their tactics and had not asked what I would do in certain situations.

Being included in all aspects of the hunt makes the chase more memorable. Don’t play follow the leader and keep your head down. Your guides are there to “guide” you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be involved in the game plan. Ask them to explain their maneuvers and why they are doing things in certain ways. Share your opinions on the best route for a stealthy approach or ask to blow a bugle or yelp softly to a turkey.

Work as partners, and when you get an animal on the ground, it will be that much more rewarding.

If You Like It, Shoot It

The mule deer buck caught me by surprise. His head took up the entire view of my binos.

I wanted her to experience an exciting hunt, so I had opted to move around for a bit. As we stalked through a secluded pasture, we found ourselves distracted by a curious Border collie who decided to say hello. After a few minutes of petting, he scampered away. I went back to glassing and discovered the buck had snuck in on us undetected.

“Look slowly to your right,” I whispered. When Ashley didn’t reply, I moved my eyes from the binos to look at her. She was frantically searching to her left. “Your other right,” I whispered, trying hard not to laugh.

She spotted the buck, and her breathing quickened. He stood no more than 40 yards away, looking directly at us. He was no 170-inch mule deer. But he made Ashley’s heart race, and that’s all that mattered.

The Border collie I thought had spoiled our hunt was actually its savior. The buck turned from us to watch the dog trot down the road. It was enough time for me to get Ashley settled on shooting sticks. After she took the shot, the buck ran 10 yards before toppling over. Our whoops of excitement could have been heard in the next county.

For Ashley’s first big-game animal, the size of the buck wasn’t as important as the experience, the effort, and the camaraderie. The same can apply to your hunt. If size isn’t everything, let your guide know. If a 120-inch, eight-point whitetail walks out of the woods and gets your heart pumping, let loose an arrow. It’s your hunt, and any animal is a trophy if you work hard for it.

Dream it, do it

The musty stench of rutting deer hit my nostrils before I found him—his body lay camouflaged among the sage brush. Kneeling, I grasped the thick antlers and admired the old muley’s rack. Deep forks adorned his right beam, while his front left fork resembled a crab claw. He wasn’t symmetrical, but that didn’t matter.

After passing on the first mule deer, much to Clint’s disdain, the rest of our hunt together had been filled with miles of Colorado terrain hiked, two blown stalks, one surge of adrenaline while waiting on a big buck to walk out of a coulee for a broadside shot (he never did), and this belly crawl to within 120 yards of—now—my buck. He was hard-earned, and that was all that mattered to me.

We all hunger for adventure in the backcountry. Chasing bugling elk among the aspens in the San Juan NationalForest, glassing for black bears atop a rugged outcropping in the Frank Church– River of No Return Wilderness, or seeing a whitetail’s rack silhouetted against a golden sunset in the Nebraska Sandhills are experiences to be savored. Speak up, be involved, work for it. Make it yours, and you will be guaranteed the hunt of a lifetime.

Hello and welcome back to Morning Mindset and I'm excited to record this particular episode of Morning Mindset because the topic suggestion came from one of you. Yes, that's right. I have a wife who also is my email sorting person, and she sourced through the info@morningmindsetpodcast.com box.

Yes, she sorts the inbox and lets me know. Now most of the stuff that comes in the inbox, I will have to admit to you is Chinese spam, but after we sort through all the Chinese spam every once in a while, we come across something that is actually valuable and that may have value to other people besides myself and the person who wrote the email.

That's a very, I want to let you guys know that if you want to ask a question, and you want the response on the radio or on the podcast when we choose questions or topics to discuss on our shows. What we have to do is we have to look at it, because we get a lot of questions, we have to look at it and say “Will this benefit only the person who asked the question, or will this topic or question probably benefit a wide variety or a wide range of people?”

Will other people benefit besides just the person who asked the question? For instance, you know, and I've used it before people say if you write me a letter saying, “Where can I go to get a hunting license in Oregon?” Alright, that's pretty specific, right? I mean I live in Eugene, Oregon. Where can I go to get a hunting license? If I answer that question on the podcast, very few people will actually get benefit from that. But if I ask if, for instance, this one today, it's titled “What to leave in and what to leave out” and thank you, Kevin, for the topic suggestion.

Kevin wrote us a letter and he said that, like the old Bob Seger song the lyric, from the old Bob Seger song and I believe it was the song was “Against the wind” and one of the things he said “What to leave in and what to leave out” or “what to leave out and what to leave in” I'm not sure which way he phrased it. But the fact that matter is, is Kevin said there's so much available to us. There's so much information.

Podcasts, YouTube channels, app television, radio shows, books, there is so much available to the consumer today, instantly. I mean it's available instantly thanks to the miracle of the internet and iTunes and all that jazz. How does a person know what to leave in and what to leave out? How do you know what to spend your time on?

Now I talked about this subject previously on my other show, people will ask things like “How do I know that the instructor that I'm going to take a class from is a good instructor?” or “How do I know that that school is a good school?” or “How will I know that this class is a valuable class?” and I say well the truth of the matter is, if you're a complete and total novice, if you have almost no education or experience in that field, you're not going to know.

Let's say you want to become an automobile mechanic and you want to go to a class or school or you know a seminar, or what have you about Transmissions or what have you. If you've never done that, you're not gonna know whether the class you just went to or the class you're going to is the best one available or the worst one available.

You're not going to know if the instructor is the best instructor or if he's just faking it to get by, because you have no basis for understanding. So what you're going to have to do, I mean and this is how humans have always been, but I think the confusion that the internet has created with all of these podcasts and blogs and YouTube channels and you know all the information that's available instantly on demand people become overwhelmed.

They don't know where to start. No, it's really no more difficult than this, the more education and experience that you have. The easier it will be to separate fact from bullcrap. Education is training, education can become from reading books education can come from watching videos. You say we have if I watch a video I'm not going to know.

Well, you don't just watch one, you don't just take one class and of course, experience is putting that education, that training, all that information that you've gathered that skill experiences putting it into practice. Yeah, I'm out here in Wyoming and every fall people come to Wyoming from outside of the state so they can hunt our big game.

They hunt the antelope and the mule deer they hunt the elk. Sometimes the Moose, and they come from other places and they're coming here to work with our guides, our hunting guides. Why do they work with our hunting guides? Why don't they just do it on their own? Well, they work with our hunting guides, because not only do our hunting guides have a lot of education, but they have a tremendous amount of experience so they can separate pretty much immediately the fact from the bull crap.

Experience, actually putting your education into practice. I was talking to someone recently who is a professional fishing guide, and he said that people would show up he'd been guiding, you know fishing trips for almost 30 years, but people would show up and they had read an article in a magazine, and so they believed that because they read an article in a magazine, that they knew what was going to happen and how it should happen.

They didn't have any experience. They just had some information, so if you want to be able to separate fact from bullcrap, and also in addition to separating the fact from the bullcrap to figure out how to invest your time wisely and effectively. You need to continuously gain education and continuously gain experience the more education and the more experience you have the better able you will be to discern what is worth your time, and that takes time.

I know you're like “No, I just want you to give me a simple, easy answer.” I can't give you a simple easy answer, the simple easy answer would be to listen to everything I say, read everything I write, that would be the simple answer. But I can't do that. I can't just give you a simple answer.

So when it comes to “What to leave in and what to leave out”, the more experience you gain, the more education and information you have about that topic the easier it will be for you to decide to realize what is fact and what is bullcrap, what is a waste of your time, and what is a valuable use of your time?

About 1 in 5 deer tested in the Devil’s Lake area, tested positive for CWD or Chronic Wasting Disease according to the most recent numbers. That’s a lot. So with deer gun season nearly upon us, it’s a good time to look a little deeper into CWD, what it means and what the numbers for our area are looking like.

Call this a “dummies” guide to CWD and Sauk County by the numbers, sort of post. The CDC describes Chronic wasting disease (CWD) as a prion disease that affects deer, elk, reindeer, sika deer and moose. CWD has been killing animals in the wild and on game farms. It was first discovered in captive mule deer in Colorado in 1967. Since then CWD has spread to 23 states and 2 provinces in Canada.

How does CWD kill? Well, Dr. Nick Haley wrote for the North Deer Farmer’s Association that CWD’s effects (Which is a brain-damaging disease similar to Mad Cow or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans, are “…very similar to Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of dementia in people.” Infected deer will lose weight and show “obvious neurologic problems like aggression, inability to stand, or difficulty swallowing – symptoms mirrored by aging Alzheimer’s patients.” They will eventually die.

In researching for this article, one big surprise for me was what we are learning about how the disease is spread. I had heard CWD was thought to spread through feces, urine or saliva, animal contacts such as touching noses and maternal contact (mother to fetus). However, the CWD Alliance points out that It is not known exactly how CWD is transmitted. The surprise to me was that plants and even dirt could help spread the disease!

Dirt? It’s the prions… According to the CDC, “The term “prions” refers to abnormal, pathogenic agents that are transmissible and are able to induce abnormal folding of specific normal cellular proteins called prion proteins that are found most abundantly in the brain.”  Well, that’s a mouthful, but the important bit is that a recent study showed that these infectious prion proteins could bind with plants and even dirt;

“Scientists already knew that these CWD prions are good at binding to soil, especially clay-based soils, and that they can persist there. Soto (Claudio Soto, Ph.D.,) said that when some of the soil where an infected dead animal had been buried was injected into research animals several years after it had been buried, the injected animals came down with prion disease.” – Food Saftey News

This bit really stuck out to me having found a “gut pile” (Discarded organs of deer left by hunters.) along the road at the Sauk Prairie Recreation area yesterday (Nov 7th) and another along the road here in Baraboo just this morning! Not only will this help to spread CWD, but it’s just gross as well. As you can imagine the Wisconsin DNR suggests other disposal methods!

Of course, the big question is; Can CWD pass through the meat to humans who eat it? The answer isn’t as simple as you might think. What we do know is that every conceivable test done so far seems to suggest that CWD won’t pass to humans, but there is one big caveat when looking at test results, the incubation period. Prion diseases have such long incubation periods that all the tests done to date may not be the final word. Claudio Soto, Ph.D., (Mentioned Above) a UTHealth researcher and lead author of an article about the topic published May 26, 2015, in Cell Reports is quoted in an article by Food Saftey News as saying, “…Even though there have been no confirmed cases of infections in humans from CWD, the public should know that “it’s a possibility that needs to be explored.” and “…these (CWD) prions are accumulating, and prions have a long incubation period — sometimes as long as 30 to 40 years in humans.” Certainly, it’s reasonable why some folks don’t want to eat CWD infected deer.

This, of course, is all background to my research into how prevalent CWD is the Devil’s Lake State Park region, especially with the annual Deer Gun hunt just a couple weeks away. The key is understanding the numbers. A popular way to present the numbers recently has been to combine total test results since testing began in 2002. Done this way, The report for Sauk County would read something like; Out of 15,883 tested, only 402 tested positive for CWD. Only about 2.5% positive. Sounds good. Still, look at the chart above from the Wisconsin DNR. You’ll see that since testing started in 2002, the number of samples taken has nose-dived while the number of positive results has climbed. So in 2016 when only 442 samples were taken, 90 tested positive! That is 20.36% or basically, 1 out 5 deer tested had CWD. So far in 2017, (Based on WDNR test results by county*) 10 out of 52 deer analyzed here in Sauk County showed positive for CWD. Again, about 20%.

Of course, everyone has to make their own choices about what is safe to eat and whether CWD is a health concern. The science isn’t clear yet and certainly, Wisconsin’s sample sizes are no longer adequate. It does seem that our part of the state is showing much higher numbers than elsewhere and the percentages are going up, but with so few samples these days, anything could be argued.

One last thought. I was also looking into what happens when wildlife managers lose the “battle” with CWD. From what I could find, there seems to be a leveling off point around 40% out west.  One report says that, In “Wyoming, where CWD has been endemic for decades, 40% of some herds are infected while white-tailed deer populations are declining by 10% per year.**”  Even if you don’t care about deer as a food source, those are some hard numbers to swallow.

Deer Gun hunting in Sauk County (Devil’s Lake Area) runs from Nov. 18 – 26th with another antler-less-only Holiday Hunt from Dec. 7 – 10.
