SpaceX's Fram2 mission captures 1st human X-ray in Earth orbit

In 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen made a groundbreaking discovery while experimenting with cathode rays — accidentally unveiling what we now call X-rays. Recognizing their potential for medical use, Röntgen captured the first X-ray image of a human body: his wife's hand, ring and all.

Nearly 130 years later, the private SpaceX Fram2 mission has paid homage to that historic moment — but from orbit. Launched on March 31, Fram2 became the first human spaceflight to enter a polar orbit, carrying four passengers. The mission was funded by Chun Wang, a Maltese cryptocurrency billionaire, who brought along three fellow polar explorers.

Over the course of their 3.5-day journey, the crew conducted 22 experiments, including polar observation, space-grown mushrooms — and most notably, capturing the very first human X-ray image taken in space.
