Michael's Day 5 @ Youth Build Boston
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Towards the end of the summer, Youth Build Boston has a yearly field day. We were lucky enough to be part of this building morale exercise. Spent our last day playing ball, eating Jamaican jerk chicken from the food truck, and hiding from the heat of the sun. Once it was time to leave we met with Danyson, Neil, and Emily one last time to thank them for making us feel welcomed in the firm and being part of the community.

Michael's Day 4 @ Youth Build Boston
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We focused day 4 on creating different scenarios for the Mobile Farm Stand and seeing its different modular uses and necessary components. We agreed that the best form for this project would be a 5'x6' package trailer hitch. This contains 3 separate components that could be adjusted sideways expanding its volume horizontally to take the opportunity of space. From here Neil, Emily, and Danyson will take over to complete the project.
It was a great experience being part of this project. Can't wait to win the competition and volunteer to build it. It's crazy how our mentality changed from "If we win we can help build this" towards "When we win we coming back to help build this". Danyson, Emily, and Neil I appreciate the opportunity that was given and welcoming us students into your home.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
On day 3 we visited Thorton Street Urban Farm and Community Garden owned by Hailey House, partners of Youth Build Boston. We discussed the projects that Youth Build Boston designed and built for the farm with their students. The importance of Haley House to the Roxbury community includes direct services of delivery of fresh healthy food, urban agriculture, education and training which happens on these farms.
The PARTI diagram explains the use and purpose of the spaces inside of Thorton Street Urban farm and Community Garden.

Michael's Day2 @ Youth Build Boston
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our day 2 at Youth Build Boston started with a meeting with Danyson, Emily, and Neil collaboratively working towards the design of the Mobile Farm Stand. We were introduced to the idea of designing the Mobile Farm Stand with the factor of customization based on community needs. The design would modify based on its user to better serve the community.
Later that day we left The Designery to meet with Bikes Not Bombs. They are a nonprofit bicycle shop that teaches teens bicycle safety and mechanical skills while earning a bike in the process. While shipping overseas to economical developmental projects. The purpose of our visit was to learn how they serve the community and to propose a partnership for the future design of the Mobile Farm stand. After a successful meeting with Elijah, executive director at Bikes not Bombs, we left with a great networking experience with the rest of the BAC students.

Michael's Day 1 @ Youth Build Boston
Tumblr media
On our first day at Youth Build Boston Fanan, Mohammad, and I met the design team Danyson, Neil, and Emily. They welcomed us into their studio space, The Designery, where part of what they do is mentor young teens and adults introducing them to the design industry. We got a tour of the projects that were worked on by the students, astonished at what the future generation of designers will bring to the community of Roxbury.
After we all introduced ourselves we got an overview of the project we were going to be learning about for the week. It was an RFP design competition that Youth build Boston was going to be part of. The goal was to serve communities in Boston with residents that face higher levels of food inequity and food Insecurity by proposing a mobile farm stand. We learned about doing research based on precedent studies that could help with the schematic design process. It was quite an impressive first-day experience at Youth Build Boston!
