Zuma Appreciation Week - Day 1, Favorite Catchphrase
I've been a fan of racing sports since forever, thanks to my dad. With one of my favorite pups having a racing-inspired catchphrase, you bet that's my favorite!
I like how it's a reminder that Zuma is a VERY competitive pup, despite seeming calm and relaxed most times - all you need to do is to mention a game, an invite to play, to compete on something, and he suddenly transforms into a little energetic fur ball, always eager to be on the move, to show what he's capable of, to defy his limits and do better every time.

Zuma wasn't my first option at first with Paw Patrol. I discovered the tv series thanks to a drawing fan of Marshall; then I saw the movies and now I'm watching the TV Series since season one. But Zuma and Rocky are growing on me as well and now I can't live without them.
But Zuma is dissapearing from the series. In season 5 I noticed his appearances declined a bit. I'm sad for him: One can think "It's a BAY, he will have a lot of work to do!!" but sometimes the writers decline his responsabilities to the others thanks to a mental gymnastics no one can understand.
Tumblr media
But look at him!! He's having a good time with Ryder! :D
So last week I jumped into the "Mighty Pups" TV movie!
It was fun. And I think his catchphrase "Let's do the wave!" really fits with him, maybe because is good at surfing or swimming. We need more of him doing his job on adventure bay!! It's a shame he has more protagonism on the mighty movie!

He's one with the water!

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 4 - Zuma's Birthday!
Today’s the big day! For those who may not know, while none of the pups have any official birthdays, today is the day the organizer of Zuma Appreciation Week headcanons to be Zuma’s birthday, and so this is the day she’s celebrating it on her blogs. I don’t really have much to say here other than a big Happy Birthday to Zuma, so let’s get this party started!
Zuma yawned as he made his way out of his pup-house to stretch his legs.
“Must’ve gotten up early. Chase hasn’t woken us up with his megaphone yet.”
He considered going back into his pup-house to take advantage of his early rising with a good book and enjoy a relaxing morning, but once he remembered what day it was, he knew he wouldn’t be able to sit still.
“It’s my birthday! Wahoo!”
Zuma had to stop himself from howling with excitement and accidentally waking the others; just because it was his birthday didn’t mean he was allowed to give everyone else a rude awakening.
“I wonder what Ryder has planned for today…”
Zuma’s tail wagged happily at the thought. Ryder always made a point to do something extra special whenever one of their birthdays came around. Marshall had gotten to spend his birthday with his favorite racer, The Woosh, and Rocky had been surprised with his own garage on his birthday, which Zuma still has yet to visit for himself; he’ll need to pop by there sometime.
Since he was so full of energy, Zuma decided to run a few laps around the Lookout to blow off some steam, but as he was finishing his first lap, he caught a glimpse inside Chase’s pup-house out of the corner of his eye and skidded to a halt.
Chase wasn’t in his pup-house. In fact, looking back at the rest of the pup-houses, he realized all of them were empty.
“Where is everyone?” Zuma asked no one in particular. Maybe it wasn’t as early in the morning as he had thought, had he slept through Chase’s wake-up call somehow? If so, how come no one had come to get him?
He decided to head inside the Lookout to see if they were there, only to be met with a dark room, the only light coming from the glass doors of the entrance.
“Did the power go out or something?”
………
“SURPRISE!”
Light flooded the room, and Zuma jumped a solid foot in the air as everyone popped out of their hiding spots. The Lookout lobby had been decorated in shades of bright orange and ocean blue, with kelp green streamers and sea creature replicas thrown in here and there. A bubble-maker sat near the back of the room, filling the Lookout with a steady stream of bubbles, and in the center of the room sat a pretty impressive underwater themed cake topped with a cute figurine of Zuma in his scuba gear posed to look like he was swimming through the ocean.
“Happy Birthday Zuma!” Ryder and the rest of the pups cheered. Zuma stood in shock for a moment before he broke out into laughter.
“Wow guys, you did all this for me? How long did it take to set all this up?”
“Not as long as you might think.” Rocky replied, “Between the six of us we were able to get it done pretty quickly. The only real problem we had was with hiding the cake, Mr. Porter finished it yesterday and we had to get it into the fridge without you noticing.”
“I thought you guys were acting weird yesterday.”
“Yeah, it was honestly such a pain, but it was worth it.”
“You guys are the best!”
“Speaking of cake,” Ryder chimed in, “Do you want to eat it now, or wait until after your big surprise?”
“I think we should wait.” Rubble suggested, which was frankly surprising since they were discussing food. “We’re all gonna be pretty hungry after Zuma’s surprise.”
Zuma’s tail wagged wildly, it sounded like his surprise was something big! He felt like he was about to bounce off the walls in excitement.
“Let’s do it after, you guys are getting me so excited for my surprise I don’t think I can wait another minute for it!”
“Well, can you at least wait until after breakfast?” Rubble asked, sending the group into a fit of laughter.
Once they had breakfast, the team made their way to the docks, where Cap’n Turbot was waiting with the Flounder.
“Ahoy there pups! And a particularly perky ahoy to you, Zuma, and a hearty happy birthday! You ready for a riveting ride out to sea?”
“You bet! What are we gonna do? Whale watching? Water skiing? Scuba diving?”
“Well, you’ll just have to step foot onto my fine vessel and find out.”
Zuma practically ran onto the Flounder and had to stop himself from just taking the wheel and manning the vessel himself; a tempting idea aside from the fact that he didn’t know where they’re supposed to be going.
As the ship set sail, Zuma raced back and forth from one side of the boat to the other, looking over the railings to try and figure out where they were headed with his tail wagging so fast it was almost a blur.
“It looks like Zuma’s got the zoomies.” Cap’n Turbot laughed as he watched Zuma run across the ship’s deck for what must’ve been the tenth time by now. Ryder nodded before briefly slipping below deck to grab the scuba gear he had brought along with them.
“Hey Zuma, you want to go ahead and get into your scuba gear now or wait until we get there?”
“I knew it! We are going scuba diving!”
“Yep, and you’re going to love the diving spot we found, it’s amazing. Even Rocky’s excited about it.”
“Well, I wouldn’t say excited,” Rocky countered, “but from the pictures Cap’n Turbot showed us, it is really pretty. And it’s a type of recycling, which you know I’ll never complain about, even if it’s underwater.”
Now Zuma was even more excited, it must be great if it got Rocky in the water! Zuma decided to busy himself by getting into his scuba gear, and by the time he was suited up, the Flounder had dropped anchor at its destination.
“Alright pups, ready to dive?”
“You know what I always say: let’s dive in!”
Zuma canon-balled into a water with a big splash, followed by the rest of the Paw Patrol along with Cap’n Turbot. Together, the group dived beneath the waves and began swimming towards the sea floor.
Even in the water, Zuma was still a bundle of energy, doing spins and flips and kicking up a whirlwind of bubbles.
Once they were close to the sea floor, a large structure came into view. It was a sunken ship, probably centuries old, completely covered with colorful coral and sea life. Large schools of fish darted in and out of holes in the ships hull alongside crabs and starfish that crawled along the deck. It was the biggest coral reef Zuma had ever seen.
“Woah. An artificial reef! I’ve never seen one of these in person before! This is awesome!”
Rocky nodded, “Yeah, it’s so cool how all the ocean creatures can recycle stuff like old ships and shipping containers that fell in the ocean and turn them into reefs. Its such a great way to reuse stuff in a way that directly contributes to environmental conservation.”
“Maybe you and I can do some research together on underwater habitat preservation, have you heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?”
“Are you kidding? What environmental conservationist hasn’t heard of that floating nightmare? You and I should definitely brainstorm ocean clean-up ideas, it keeps me up at night knowing there’s all that garbage just floating around in the ocean.”
“Me too.” Zuma sighed, “But that’s a problem for another day. Right now, we’ve got a reef to explore!”

Zuma Appreciation Week - Day 2, Favorite Friendship
HA. If you thought I'd say it's Rocky, WELL, YOU WOULDN'T BE WRONG. Buuuuuuuut... I actually have a Top 5 favorite friendships with Zuma: Rocky, Cap'n Turbot (in my mind, since they never interacted much), Skye, Hurricane Harrigan and this one specific case: His friendship with Chase in a private RP/story I have been writing with @pcwpatrol. And I just couldn't PICK one above all! So I decided to do it different for this prompt... And go with the "different" one.
In this AU we share, Chase had an accident in the river which nearly had him gone for good and Zuma was the one who got to rescue him, but both ended up getting some trauma after that - Chase's been having trouble to stay calm around water and Zuma has been having trouble to see Chase near water, so they work together to overcome this, step by step. This includes some time in the pool at least twice a week, going for walks next to the river, etc.
This whole process of these two working together and caring about each other even long after the issue's "gone", made me keep them as one of my favorite of Zuma's relationships, non-negotiable.

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 7 - Ryder and Zuma
Ah, what could be a better way to round off Zuma Appreciation Week than a tribute to the age-old friendship between a boy and his dog. We don’t really get to see Ryder just hanging out and bonding with the pups anymore, which is a real shame since the bond Ryder has with his pups is clearly a strong one. They all share such a sweet connection with each other and let’s face it; we’re all a little jealous of Ryder for having six adorable talking pups that he gets to spend all his time with. That boy is living every dog lover’s dream. Zuma Appreciation Week has been a lot of work but also so much fun to do, I’m really glad I could do this, so let’s end this on a high note, complete with some headcanoned backstory.
“You won’t get away with this, Moby!”
“And what makes you think you and your little Paw Patrol can stop me?”
Moby swam off in his Moby-mobile, taking with him the magic clam shell of Puplantis he had stolen, with Ryder and Zuma in hot pursuit.
“Hahaha! Without the magic pearls, Puplantis will crumble. Then the mer-pups will have to leave and I can have Puplantis all to myself! No more annoying singing or dancing or big celebrations, just me and my inventions!”
McSquidly gave a squeak of annoyance.
“… And McSquidly too.”
“Not if we have anything to say about it!” Ryder declared, as he and Zuma followed Moby into a system of underwater caves. “Zuma, see if you can find a shortcut so you can get ahead of him, then we’ll have him surrounded.”
“Aye-aye! Ruff! Sonar!”
Using his pup pack’s sonar device, Zuma quickly mapped out the cave system and found a series of tunnels that could get him in front of Moby.
“Bingo.”
Ryder and Zuma split up, with Ryder continuing to pursue Moby as Zuma slipped into a tunnel that Moby had failed to notice.
“Come on, McSquidly, we’ve already shaken one of them, just have to lose the other and we’ll be home free.”
A sharp turn caused Moby’s vehicle to hit the cave wall. Not enough to damage it, but enough to shake McSquidly from his perch on top of the sub, causing the squid to reach their tentacles over the windshield of the Moby-mobile.
“McSquidly! I can’t see!”
The Moby-mobile started to swerve wildly out of control, banging against the walls and ceiling of the cave as Moby continued to try and steer blindly.
“That’s far enough Moby- Woah!” Zuma popped out of the side tunnel, blocking Moby’s path which led to the two vehicles colliding. Zuma was more than grateful that Ryder had built their vehicles to be able to withstand heavy blows, otherwise that crash could’ve been pretty bad for him.
“You again? Where did you come from?”
“The jig is up Moby! Now hand over the clam shell, it doesn’t belong to you.”
Moby growled as he looked between Ryder and Zuma, realizing he was trapped between them. Then a sudden rumble shook the cave.
“Ryder! My sonar says the caves are starting to collapse, we gotta get out of here!”
Rocks started to fall from the roof of the cave, causing a small opening to form. Moby smiled as he saw his chance to escape.
“McSquidly! Ink ‘em!”
McSquidly nodded and shot a cloud of ink at Ryder and Zuma, blinding them. Meanwhile, Moby slammed his vehicle into the crack in the ceiling, making it big enough for him to escape but causing more of the cave to collapse in the process.
“And for good measure…” Moby used his sub to push a large boulder over the hole he created, preventing Zuma and Ryder from following him.
As Moby made his escape, more rocks came tumbling down on Ryder and Zuma, landing on Ryder’s sub and trapping him in a pile of rubble.
“Ryder!”
“Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. You need to go after Moby and get the clam shell back.”
“No way! I’m not leaving you here in a crumbling cave!”
“But Moby’s getting awa-”
“Moby can wait! You can’t! This cave is coming down fast, if you stay here, you’ll be crushed!”
“So will you. I’ll be fine, just get out of here.”
Zuma sighed, he should’ve known it was less about catching Moby and more about getting him out of danger.
“I’m not leaving this cave without you! Either both of us get out of here or neither of us do! Now let me get rid of those rocks.”
Zuma used the claw arms of his sub to lift the rocks off Ryder’s sub, while using his own sub to block any more rocks from falling on Ryder.
“Be careful, Zuma!”
Once all the rocks were cleared, Ryder tried to start up his sub, but one of the larger rocks had crushed one of the sub’s propellers.
“Dang it. Go on without me, I’ll only slow you down.”
Instead of arguing, Zuma just grabbed Ryder's sub with one of his claw arms and began dragging him through the cave.
"Zuma! You won't make it out in time with my sub weighing you down! Please, just leave me, I can find my own way out."
"No way! If I was in your position, you wouldn't have left me, so I'm not leaving you!"
The caves were beginning to completely collapse at this point. Zuma had to swerve and dodge falling boulders as he towed Ryder through the cave, doing a double-take every time there was a near-miss to ensure Ryder hadn't been hit.
The cave entrance was finally in sight, but rocks and boulders were quickly piling up, threatening to block their way out.
"You won't be fast enough to get out before the entrance is blocked if you keep towing me! You have to let me go, I'll call for back-up and Rubble can-"
"NO! We can make it! We just need to keep going!"
"Zuma, I promise I'll be fine, just-"
"I'M NOT LEAVING YOU TO DIE IN A CAVE LIKE THEY DID TO ME!"
Zuma pushed his sub's engines to their absolute limit, shooting through the water faster than he'd ever dared to go before and making it out of the cave right before the entrance was blocked completely.
Zuma sighed in relief and let himself relax into the seat of his sub. "See? I told you we'd make it out."
But Ryder gave him a weird look that Zuma couldn't quite place, he seemed... Sad? Worried? Sympathetic? Zuma couldn't find the right words to describe it.
"Zuma... What is it you said about being left in a cave to die?"
"Oh, just a bad memory from my puppyhood is all. You don't need to worry about it."
Ryder wasn't at all convinced. He got out of his sub and gestured for Zuma to do the same, which he reluctantly did.
"That cave you were left in... Was it the same cave I found you in?" Zuma was quiet, but he nodded.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Zuma thought for a moment, and an awkward silence passed between them.
"... I used to live in a shelter for strays. The shelter was pretty understaffed so we didn't get a lot of outdoor time, but one day we were all taken to the beach for a beach day. It was actually the first time I'd ever been to a beach, and I had so much fun. There was so much space to run and play, and I wanted to explore everything, so when I found the cave I just had to see what was inside. But, then there was a cave in. Everything was suddenly pitch black, and I could hear people shouting from the other side. When they realized I was the only one inside, they just... Left me... Said that one tiny pup just wasn't worth the effort to move all those rocks... So they just left me in the cave and went back to the shelter."
Zuma was starting to cry at this point, and Ryder wrapped his arms tightly around his pup.
"I… I just couldn't leave you in there! All alone in a dark cave. I didn't want you to think I didn't care, or that you weren't worth the effort. And I... I didn't want to be alone either. I didn't think I could handle being in another crumbling cave without you there. I was just too scared."
Zuma wrapped his front paws around Ryder’s neck, whimpering and nuzzling his chin as much as their scuba masks would allow.
“Hey, it’s okay, Zuma. Everything’s okay now. And even though you were scared, I’m very proud of you for being brave and for not giving up.”
“You’ll always be worth the effort, Ryder, even if it means being in a dangerous spot, it’ll always be worth it.”
“And you are too, Zuma. Those people made a huge mistake leaving you behind, because they missed out on an amazing pup. You were more than worth the effort it took to find you in that cave. If I could go back in time and do things differently, the only thing I would change is I’d adopt you sooner, before the whole cave disaster happened.”
Zuma smiled, wishing he could wipe the tears from his eyes. “Thanks, Ryder. I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear that.”
“Anytime, Zuma.”
A beep sounded from Ryder’s pup-pad.
“Ryder!” Chase’s voice called from the other end, “I found Moby and got the clam shell back!”
“Great work, Chase! We’ll meet you back at Puplantis.”
Zuma blushed slightly in embarrassment, he had almost forgotten about Moby and the clam shell.
“Glad Chase was able to catch him after I let him get away.”
“You didn’t ‘let’ him get away, you saw there was a more immediate danger and took care of that first.”
“Well, maybe next time don’t be so insistent on being a martyr.”
“No promises.”

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 6 - Favorite Vehicle
I honestly never gave much thought to which vehicle was my favorite, so this is another one I had to think about for a minute. Ultimately, the title of favorite Zuma vehicle has to go to the Adventure City Hovercraft. A hovercraft is just a super cool vehicle in my opinion, and the Adventure City version can separate into a submarine and a life raft, which is just such a clever and unique upgrade to the hovercraft’s original submarine mode that really makes the Adventure City hovercraft stand out against the rest of Zuma’s vehicles. That means that for today’s prompt, we’re headed to the big city!
“Hey guys! Great to have you all back in Adventure City!”
“Great to be back, Liberty.” Ryder replied, “Skye’s been looking forward to this trip for awhile now.”
“Hey girl!” Skye called as she practically bounced out of the Paw Patroller, “You ready to hit the town? I heard there’s this big arcade that just opened downtown.”
“Heck yeah! I’ve been dying to go there! They say it’s the biggest arcade in the city!”
“Would you girls mind if I tag along?” Zuma asked, “It sounds like a ton of fun.”
“Sure! From what Skye has told me, you’ve got quite the competitive streak. I don’t mean to brag. But I do hold the high score in every game at the old arcade restaurant by the park.”
“Is that a challenge?”
“Maybe…”
So, Liberty brought Skye and Zuma to the brand-new Adventure City Mega Arcade, and boy was it mega. A two story building decked out in enough neon lights to been seen from space, with a food-court, laser-tag arena, and according to the advertisements ‘Over five hundred games for countless hours of fun!’ Zuma had half a mind to try and count all the games in the arcade to see if that statement was actually true.
Skye was immediately drawn to the Pup Pup Boogie machine: Pup Pup Boogielution, while Liberty and Zuma made a beeline for every competitive game they could find.
“I’m gonna crush you AND these Wack-a-Moles, Zuma!”
“Oh, racing games are my JAM! Prepare to eat my dust, Liberty!
“That No.1 highscore slot is mine!”
“I’ll wipe out these aliens before you even get the chance to reload!”
“How you like them apples, water pup?”
“Get owned, wiener dog!”
The two pups were racking up tickets so fast they could probably sell out the prize shop if they wanted to, but the amount of tickets they were winning was the last thing on either of their minds.
However, a beep from their pup-tags stopped both the pups in their tracks.
“Paw Patrol, to the Pup Tower!” Ryder’s voice called from their communicators, so Liberty, Zuma, and Skye raced out of the arcade and met up with the other pups in the Tower’s elevator, where Marshall crashed into the others with his usual clumsy flair.
“Talk about a metro-fall-a-ton!”
The pups laughed as they rode the elevator to the observatory, where Ryder was waiting.
“Alright, pups, we’ve got a big mission on our hands. The waterway connecting Adventure City’s river to the ocean has been blocked, causing the river to flood. We need to clear the waterway before it causes any more flooding. Zuma, I’ll need you and your submarine to clear whatever may be blocking the water flow, we’ll also need your rescue raft to help anyone who’s been swept away in the river.”
“Let’s dive in!”
“Marshall, you’ll be in Zuma’s rescue raft to search for anyone caught up in the floodwaters and administer first-aid if necessary.”
“I’m ready for a ruff-ruff rescue!”
“And Chase, I need you to secure the perimeter of the flood zone and handle crowd control.”
“Chase in on the case!”
“Everyone else, stand by in case we need more help. Paw Patrol is on a roll!”
The three pups followed Ryder to the deployment room, howling with delight as they were launched down the ramp and onto the streets. Zuma would never admit it out loud, but a part of him was always really happy whenever they got a mission in Adventure City, he loved the excitement and thrill of getting launched at roughly 50 miles an hour. It was moments like that that made him love his job all the more.
It wasn’t long before they got to the flooded river. The water had already risen past the banks of the canal, spilling water onto the nearby streets, so Chase immediately got to work closing off the roads and redirecting traffic.
Zuma drove his hovercraft off the edge of the river, separating it into his submarine and rescue raft as he dove into the water with Marshall right behind him to man the raft.
As Marshall scanned the water for civilians, Zuma headed downstream to locate the blockade. If Zuma remembered correctly, the river was connected to the ocean via the sewer system, which was probably where the blockage was. Fortunately, the river entrance to the sewer was pretty big, so Zuma had no trouble getting inside.
The sewers were completely flooded, and the first thing Zuma noticed as he entered was the large amount of garbage and debris floating around. There had been a lot of rain in the city recently, so it was likely the garbage was washed into the sewers from the storm drains. He’ll have to talk with Rocky later about improving the city’s waste management, maybe a system to catch the garbage as it fell into the storm drains, but that was a problem they could tackle later, right now he needed to focus on the task at hand.
Zuma’s eyes widened as he turned a corner, slamming on the breaks to avoid hitting the literal wall of trash in front of him.
“So this is what’s blocking the water. Yeesh, this city sure makes a lot of trash. I’m gonna need some back-up.” Zuma reached for his pup-tag, “Ryder, I’ve found what’s blocking the waterway. A bunch of trash got clumped together and got stuck inside the sewer. I’m gonna need some type of net or something to collect all the trash in.”
“Great work, Zuma. I’ll have Chase meet you at the sewer entrance with one of his nets, do you think that’ll work?”
“That should do the trick.”
After meeting up with Chase and getting the net he needed, Zuma dove back into the sewer and used his submarine’s claw arms to start collecting the trash. It was a long and tedious process due to the sheer amount of garbage, but after awhile of chipping away at the trash wall, he managed to break through to the other side, creating a swift current that pulled him along through the sewers.
“Woah! Ryder, I’ve cleared the garbage. The water is rushing pretty fast, so make sure everyone is out of the river.”
“Got it. You okay, Zuma?”
“Yeah, I’m good, just going for a little joyride in the rapids. I’ll meet you on the other side.”
It was a pretty rough ride as he was carried through the sewers, but Zuma had plenty of experience with rough waters and was able to keep his sub under control until he was spat out into the ocean, along with the rest of the trash.
“Whew, talk about a wild ride.”
Zuma made his way to the Adventure City beach, where Ryder and Rocky were waiting for him.
“Great job, Zuma,” Ryder applauded, “Rocky can take your sub to clean up the rest of the trash while you get your rescue raft from Marshall.”
“Thanks Ryder, though, are you sure Rocky knows how to drive my sub?”
Rocky just shrugged, “Eh, how hard can it be?”
Zuma went silent.
“… Rocky, so help me, if you crash my sub, you’re gonna be washing my pup-pack for a month. And believe me, that thing is a pain in the tail to clean.”

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 3 - Favorite Moment
Okay, this one is a bit of a toss-up between two very similar moments. In Pups Save a Goodway, there’s a really cute moment where Ryder hands Zuma a bunch of balloons which cause him to nearly float away, and in Pups Save an Adventure, while Ryder answers a call from Mr. Porter, Zuma holds onto Ryder’s kite, which again causes him to nearly float away. Ryder is so nonchalant in both scenes, especially in Pups Save an Adventure, where he doesn’t even look up from his pup-pad to grab Zuma mid-air; it’s just too funny to me. Makes me wonder if Zuma flying off is just a regular occurrence, which is what I’ll be exploring today.
Ryder’s gaming session was abruptly interrupted by a call from his pup-pad.
“Ryder?”
“Yeah, Zuma?”
“It happened again…”
Ryder couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh boy, not again. You didn’t float too far this time, did you?”
“Thankfully, no. Got caught in a tree in the yard, just need some help getting down.”
“I’ll be right there.”
As Ryder exited the elevator, he found Chase waiting for him in the lobby of the Lookout.
“Ryder, we’ve got a bit of a situation.”
“I know. Zuma already called me. Don’t worry, I’ll get him down.”
“Thanks. I don’t know how he keeps getting into these situations.”
“Honestly? Neither do I.”
Chase led Ryder to the tree Zuma was stuck in, where the pup was currently dangling upside down from a parachute tangled up in the tree. Ryder tried to hold back his laughter.
“What happened this time?”
“I was helping Rocky with some maintenance on our parachutes and skydiving gear. The ripcord broke as I was testing how it fit, which released the parachute. A poorly timed gust of wind, and well, here we are.”
“I’ll go ahead and get a ladder.” Chase said, turning back to the Lookout.
“How is it that this always seems to happen to you and none of the other pups?”
“I don’t know. But that time with the kite was totally your fault.”
“I’m never gonna live that down, am I?”
“Nope.”
Chase arrived soon after with the ladder, with Rocky helping to carry it.
“How’s it hanging, Zuma?” Rocky asked with a cheeky grin.
“Ha ha, very funny dude. Now can you please just help me get down? This is kinda your fault after all.”
“Hey, it’s not like I was the one that broke the ripcord.”
The parachute was tangled up pretty badly, so it took a while to get Zuma down. By the time he was back on solid ground, the poor pup was fighting dizziness from the blood that had rushed to his head.
“You okay, Zuma?” Chase asked.
“Yeah, just need a second to remember which sides up and which sides down.”
Meanwhile, Rocky was busy getting the rest of the mangled parachute down from the branches it was clinging to. “This is gonna take forever to fix.” He complained, looking over the knotted cords. “Ryder, can you help me?”
As Ryder helped Rocky with the parachute, Zuma flopped down inside his pup-house to sleep off the rest of his dizzy spell. But when he woke up, his head was still throbbing.
“Must’ve hit my head or something.” Zuma mumbled to himself before a strong gust of wind nearly knocked him off balance.
“What is with the wind today?”
"I think a storm might be coming." Skye replied, who was bringing the flowerpot she normally kept outside her pup-house into the Lookout for safekeeping.
"I noticed the winds shifting a lot recently, and Cap'n Turbot said his weather blimp picked up some strong winds headed this way."
"Can't say I'm surprised. I noticed a shift in the tides at the beach yesterday, a sure sign a storm's on its way. I'll call the Cap'n later and ask him to keep Ryder up to date on the storm's development, and I'm sure I don't need to tell you to be careful if you decide to go flying."
"Don't worry about me. I know how to navigate a storm, but thanks for looking out for me. Be sure to keep a look out for any storm surges."
"Will do."
Skye continued to put away anything that could fly away during the storm. Zuma had offered to help, and between the two of them, they were able to clear the yard pretty quickly.
“When do you think the storm will get here?” Zuma asked as he looked up at the sky to try and gauge the weather.
“Cap’n Turbot said it’ll probably get here tonight and blow over by morning. Oh! I forgot to mention, he also said to prepare for a possible power outage.”
“You should probably go tell Ryder that so he can be prepared.”
“Yeah, I will, thanks for the reminder.”
“No problem.”
As Skye ran off to tell Ryder about the possibility of losing power, Zuma did one last survey of the yard to make sure everything was put away.
As it turns out, a large tarp had been left out that, somehow, neither he nor Skye had noticed before.
“What’s this doing out here?”
Zuma grabbed the tarp in his teeth and was about to start dragging it away when-
“Hey! Hold on a minute!”
Rocky ran over to stop Zuma from moving the tarp.
“I need that tarp. I’ve been trying to recycle it into an airbag, but it’s too big to work on in the garage, so I brought it out here.”
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t know. Just be sure to put it away when you're done, and make sure it doesn’t fly away. The wind has picked up a lot, and a storm is on its way; I just don’t want it to fly away on a gust of wind.”
“Like how you did?”
Rocky giggled at his own joke while Zuma just rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up.”
Another sudden blast of air whipped through the yard, so strong that it lifted the tarp off the ground.
“Uh oh!”
Zuma jumped up and managed to grab the tarp, but the wind was so strong that it ended up carrying him away along with the tarp.
“Not again.” he groaned through clenched teeth.
He briefly considered just letting go of the tarp, but he was already so high up in the air that he figured it was safer to keep holding on.
Fortunately for him, the winds calmed down just as quickly as they started up, and he fell unceremoniously from the sky and onto a tree branch… Which was dangling precariously over the edge of the cliff a few hundred feet above the bay.
Zuma sighed as he reached for his pup-tag to call Ryder for the second time that day.

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 2 - Favorite Friendship
I was super excited for this one because it gives me an excuse to talk about a friendship that is seriously underrated: Zuma and Coral! I get it, they don’t really have any scenes together, but come on, they’re the water pups! You cannot tell me these two aren’t besties. So, I’m going to take this opportunity to give these two the underwater adventure they deserve!
Zuma’s tail wagged in excitement as he looked over the railing of the Flounder into the deep blue waters of the bay, searching for any sign of his fish-tailed friend and teammate.
A splash in the water drew him to the other end of the boat, where he was met with a large splash that left him drenched in water.
“Hahaha, Coral!”
“What? I thought you liked getting wet.” The mer-pup giggled, kicking up more water with her tail.
“At least warn a pup next time.”
Zuma didn’t bother to shake off the water. Instead, he went ahead and jumped over the edge of the boat, diving into the water to join Coral.
“You ready for a nice mer-moon swim under the stars?” Coral asked.
“You know it!”
With a boop of their noses and a flash of light, Zuma was transformed into a mer-pup and dived beneath the waves to explore the underwater world Coral was lucky enough to call home.
Zuma laughed and cheered as he swam through the water, weaving around rocks and boulders like an impromptu obstacle course and admiring the colorful coral reefs and the sea life surrounding them.
“Ahh, there’s nothing better than spending a mer-moon night under the sea. There’s just so much to explore! I mean, the earth is 70% water, and only about 5% of it has been explored. It’s crazy how much we still don’t know about the ocean.”
“Only 5 percent?”
“Yeah, between the water pressure, extreme temperatures, and total darkness, it’s pretty difficult for the people on land to explore the deeper parts of the ocean. It’s no wonder most people thought mer-pups were just a legend.”
“Wow, I had no idea people on land knew so little about the ocean.” Coral looked to the surface of the water, where the Flounder was waiting to bring Zuma back to shore once he was finished with his underwater playdate.
“Wait here for a second.”
Coral quickly swam up to the surface and returned a moment later with two underwater cameras, handing one of them to Zuma.
“Come on! Let’s see for ourselves what’s out there in the deep sea. I bet the people on land would love to get some pictures of whatever is down there.”
Zuma’s face lit up with excitement, “That’s a great idea Coral! There’s a ravine not too far from here that Cap’n Turbot’s been trying to explore, but it’s too narrow for the diving bell. We can start there.”
Zuma led Coral further out to see where Cap’n Turbot had shown him the ravine. The dark crack in the ocean floor seemed to lead to an endless abyss of darkness, and as much as Zuma hated to admit it, it did scare him a little.
“Maybe we should’ve brought a flashlight.”
“Don’t worry, I got it.” Coral assured. She swam to the sea floor and used a long stick to pick up a large reddish starfish with eight long, spiny arms.
“Hey, that’s a Novodinia Americana!” Zuma exclaimed.
“A what?”
“That’s the name for that species of starfish. And they can glow in the dark! Great idea, Coral.”
“Oh. I always just called him Jeff.”
The two shared a hearty laugh before venturing into the ravine, with Jeff lighting the way.
The deep sea trench seemed to transport them to a whole other world. The animals within were unlike any that Zuma had ever seen, and even the ones he was able to recognize from his deep sea books still felt alien to him. Clearly his books had failed to do the marine life justice.
“Woah. This is incredible.” Zuma breathed, watching a small school of Lanternfish swim by, snapping a few pictures before they swam off.
Coral took a photo of herself with Jeff alongside some deep-sea coral, “I know. I had no idea coral could grow this deep.”
“Really? I figured you’d know all about coral, Coral.” Zuma had to swerve to dodge the playfully thrown stone Coral had used as a response to his joke, “Hey! Don’t disturb the ecosystem!”
“Last I checked, you weren’t a part of this ecosystem. If anything, you’re an invasive species.”
“Said the pot to the kettle.”
“Touché.”
Suddenly, a strange rumble began to vibrate through the ravine, scaring off the wildlife and causing a few loose rocks to break away from the walls.
“What’s that?” Coral asked, her fur standing on end as she felt the ripples in the water.
“I’m not sure, but it doesn’t sound good. I think we should get out of here.”
“Yeah, definitely.”
As they began to make their way out of the depths, the rumbling and shaking seemed to get stronger, with bigger rocks beginning to come down.
“We better hurry, Zuma. I’ve got a bad feeling whatever’s making that sound is- AAHH!”
A long tentacle reached out from the darkness below and grabbed Coral by her tail, dragging her down along with Jeff.
“CORAL!” Zuma cried, racing back down after her. The ravine was almost pitch black without Jeff’s light, but Zuma could still see the faint glow and followed it down to the very bottom.
Jeff and his stick were resting on the sandy floor of the dark pit, but Coral was nowhere in sight.
“Coral! Coral, where are you?” Zuma called. He tried to use his pup-tag to call her, but they were too deep underwater for any signal to reach.
“Oh no… Coral! Can you hear me?”
There was no answer. Just as Zuma was considering returning to the surface to call for backup, the rumbling started again. Maybe it was just the dark ravine and his fear-filled mind playing tricks on him, but Zuma thought he saw strange shapes moving around in the darkness.
A tremendous shake sent large boulders tumbling down around him, and a large, looming shape emerged from the shadows. Zuma had half a mind to run away, or swim away in this case, but a few tentacles emerged from the darkness, just like the one that grabbed Coral.
Whatever this thing was, it took Coral, and he wasn’t about to leave her with it.
“Get back! Get back and let Coral go!” Zuma shouted, swinging Jeff wildly to try and scare the creature away.
“It’s okay, Zuma.” Zuma froze. That was Coral’s voice.
Coral emerged calmly from the darkness with the creature behind her.
“Coral! You’re okay!”
“Yeah, don’t worry, I’m fine. Sherman gave me quite the scare, though.”
The large creature came closer, close enough for Jeff’s light to reveal it as a giant squid.
“Zuma, this is Sherman. He lives here in the ravine. He only grabbed me because he was curious about us and Jeff’s light.”
“Oh. Uh, hi, Sherman.” Zuma waved his paw nervously, and Sherman gave a friendly tentacle wave in response. “I, uh, guess you’ve never seen light before since you live so deep underwater.”
Sherman nodded, moving closer to get a better look at Jeff.
“Well, next time you get curious, maybe just ask instead of grabbing my friend out of nowhere and dragging her into the darkness like some kind of horror movie monster.”
Coral laughed, “Hey, let’s take a picture with Sherman before we go. I’m sure Cap’n Turbot would love to see this.”
After taking a few shots of Sherman, and a group photo with Sherman and Jeff, the two mer-pups waved goodbye and made their way back up to the surface, emerging from the water near where the Flounder was stationed.
“I think we’ve done enough exploring for one night.” Zuma concluded, “But we should do that again some time; maybe we can find a shipwreck or an underwater cave to explore.”
“Sounds like a plan!” Coral handed Zuma her camera to give to Cap’n Turbot. “Guess I’ll see you next mer-moon. Tell Skye I said hi.”
“Will do. So long Coral, see you in the sea!”
“See you in the sea!”

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 5 - Favorite Outfit
The pups all have a ton of cute outfits, it’s honestly hard to pick a favorite. But today’s prompt demands that I do, so after much deliberation, Zuma’s Pirate Pups to the Rescue outfit is my favorite. Zuma has actually dressed up as a pirate twice in the series, the other time being a Halloween costume, so Zuma clearly has a love of pirates. His Pirate Pups outfit is super cool, and I know he must’ve had a blast being able to go on a pirate mission of his own, so I’m gonna give him another treasure hunting pirate adventure, this time with first mate Tracker! Just be warned, I don’t know any Spanish, so please forgive me if any of Tracker’s Spanish comes out wrong, I did my best, thank you Google Translate.
“Yar har har! Prepare to set sail for uncharted waters, first mate!”
“Aye-aye, Captain Zuma!”
Tracker hopped down from the bridge of their pretend pirate ship to pull the anchor shaped chew toy onto the ship deck.
“Anchor’s raised, Captain!”
Zuma pulled a rope hanging from a pole, which released a makeshift sail.
“Set a course for the eastern sea, where treasure awaits!” he shouted, pointing out towards the ocean.
“Actually, that’s south. East is that way.” Tracker corrected, pointing to Zuma’s left.
“Oh. Set a course for the southern sea then!”
The two laughed as they pretended to sail the ship through rough seas, imagining a wild storm on the horizon and giant waves that threatened to capsize their vessel.
“Ahoy! Sea beast off the port bow!”
“That’s the starboard bow, port is the other side of the ship.”
“¡Ay Caramba! I’m always mixing those up.”
Zuma laughed, “Don’t worry about it, Marshall mixes up his left and right all the time. Now man the cannons, matey! That sea beast has a date with Davey Jones!”
“Aye-aye!”
With a little toy cannon, Tracker aimed at the imaginary beast.
“Boom! Boom! To Davey Jones locker with thee ya Cuero!”
“What is a Cuero again?”
“It’s a creepy looking sea monster from Chile and Argentina. Land ho, Captain!”
“Aye! Time to drop anchor and find our treasure!”
With the toy anchor dropped and the sail refurled, the two pretend pirates hopped off their pretend ship to look for pretend treasure.
“Keep your ears peeled, matey. Who knows what dangers may be lurking on this island.”
“Aye-aye, Captain.”
The pups split up to look for their treasure, searching different sides of the beach they were playing on. As Zuma looked for a good spot to find the treasure or maybe encounter a jungle trap, he noticed a clear glass bottle half buried in the sand. Digging it up revealed that a rolled-up piece of paper was inside.
“Wow. Hey Tracker, come look what I found!”
“Arrr, did ye find the treasure, Captain?”
“Even better. A real message in a bottle!”
“Really? You found that?”
“Yep! Buried right here in the sand!”
“Well, what are you waiting for? ¡Abrelo! Open it! Let’s see what it says!”
Zuma pulled on the cork of the bottle until it popped off and shook the paper out of the bottle. The pups’ faces lit up with excitement as they unfurled the parchment.
“It’s a treasure map!” Tracker exclaimed, “No lo creo, a real treasure map!”
“Do you think it leads to real treasure?”
“There’s only one way to find out amigo, let’s follow the map and see where it leads!”
“Alright, matey, time for a real pirate adventure! Let’s go find us some treasure!”
The map marked a clear trail from Adventure Beach, up the nearby cliff and into the forest. There was also a message written on the map, saying:
“You’ve found a map, that much is clear
But only half the map is here.
To find your way to treasures unknown
Dig where the trees meet a peak of stone.”
“What do you think ‘a peak of stone’ means?” Tracker wondered. Zuma shrugged.
“I’m not sure, maybe a mountain or hill? I bet we can figure it out if we follow the map, let’s get going!”
The two pirate pups followed the map up the old roads of the cliff and reached the forest fairly quickly. From there, they began searching for any noteworthy stone structures.
“See anything that could be a peak of stone, Zuma?”
“Nothing yet.”
Zuma continued to search through the shrubs and bushes, pushing past the foliage until he came to a small lake, where many trees were growing around it with their roots dipping into the water. Despite its seemingly small size, Zuma could tell the water was pretty deep, and in the middle of the lake, a small stone spire was peeking out of the water. Zuma’s eyes widened in realization.
“Tracker! I think I found the peak of stone!”
Tracker came running almost immediately, “Really? Where is it? Where should we start digging?”
“I think it might be under the water, in that lake.”
Tracker looked over at where Zuma was pointing, tilting his head curiously.
“What makes you think it might be there? I don’t see anything that looks like a peak of stone.”
“That’s because most of the peak is underwater. It’s called a sea mount, basically a mountain that’s underwater, and the tree roots lead into the water too, so the water is where the trees meet the peak of stone.”
“You may be right! Do you think you can dive down there and take a look?”
“That’s what I was trained for!”
Zuma handed Tracker his pirate hat before jumping into the water with an excited splash. Just as Zuma suspected, the little stone spire was just the tip of a much larger underwater mountain. Overall, Zuma guessed the lake was about 20ft deep, and at the bottom he could see a half-buried bottle sticking out from the lakebed. With a little bit of effort and a quick break to come up for air, Zuma dug the bottle free and brough it to the surface.
“I got it!” He exclaimed, holding the bottle in his teeth triumphantly as he gasped for air, “Whew! That was good lung exercise.”
“You alright, amigo?”
“Yeah, I’m good. Nothing I couldn’t handle.”
Zuma carefully climbed out of the lake and shook himself off before opening the bottle to reveal the second piece of the map. Surprisingly, it didn’t show a path to the treasure, but it did have a compass drawn on the map, along with another message:
“Listen up, the treasure is near
To find it, simply open your ears.
There lies a cave by the setting sun
Just find that and your quest is done.”
“A cave by the setting sun…” Zuma pondered, “What do you think that could mean?”
“Well, the sun sets to the west, so maybe it means the cave is to the west of here.”
Zuma nodded. It made sense, and it would explain why there was a compass on the map. So, they headed west until they came to a cliff face, where a large waterfall fed into a winding river.
“The cave must be nearby,” Zuma said, “let’s start looking.”
But Tracker continued to stare at the waterfall, ears perked up at attention, listening closely.
“What is it? Do you hear something?”
“Sí. The waterfall. It sounds… Odd. Like, I can hear some sort of echo.”
Tracker stepped closer to the waterfall, concentrating on the sound. There was definitely an echo, but echoes are only made when sounds bounce off of something, what could the sound be bouncing off of?
A bombilla went off in Tracker’s head, and he ran right up to the waterfall to see what was behind it.
“Zuma! I found it! The cave is behind the waterfall!”
Zuma ran right up to Tracker to see for himself. Sure enough, right behind the wall of water, there was a large crack in the cliff, opening up to a large cave.
“It sure is! Great work first mate!”
The cave was dark, but a few cracks in the cave ceiling let in enough light for them to see. Still, the two walked slowly and carefully to avoid any hazards they might not be able to see. At the very back of the cave, a large stream of light illuminated a particular spot on the ground, where small stones were arranged… In the shape of an X.
“X marks the spot!” Zuma exclaimed, “This must be it! We found the treasure!”
“Come on! ¡Vamos a cavar! let’s get digging!”
The two pup dug their paws into the dirt and began it scooping up as fast as they could. It wasn’t long before their paws brushed up against something hard.
“¡Ahí está! I think we found it!”
It took all their strength to pull the chest out of the hole, but they managed to hoist it up with the help of Tracker’s cables. Fortunately, the chest didn’t have a lock, so all they had to do at this point was just lift the lid.
“Come on, let’s open it up!”
“Oy-oy-oy! I hope there’s real tesoro in there!”
The rusty lid took a bit of effort to pry open, but once they did, their eyes went as wide as saucers.
The chest was full of shimmering, iridescent pearls of all colors and sizes. Some were strung to create necklaces and bracelets, while others were loose.
“Woah!”
“Tantas perlas… I’ve never seen so many pearls in all my life!”
“How do you even get that many pearls?”
“Maybe whoever buried the treasure was a pearl fisher, someone who harvests pearl for a living.”
“Or maybe they were a pirate who stole from a pearl fisher!”
“Either way, this is an amazing treasure! I can’t believe we found something like this! We should call Ryder and Carlos and show them what we found!”
“Totally! We gotta show everyone! They are not gonna believe this!”

Zuma Appreciation Week: Day 1 - Favorite Catchphrase
Out of his two main catchphrases, I’d say “Ready, Set, Get Wet” is my favorite. I feel like it highlights his playful personality better than the frankly kinda generic “Let’s Dive In” not that I dislike it, but you gotta admit the latter was low-hanging fruit, while the former is more creative. Anyway, for our first day of Zuma week, let’s explore how that fun little turn of phrase might’ve come to be.
“Come on, dudes! Race you to the beach!”
Zuma laughed as he ran ahead of the other pups, with Skye and Marshall close behind. The rest of the team maintained their slow walking pace but watched in amusement.
“You can’t escape me, Zuma!” Skye exclaimed.
“You kidding? With your short legs, the only thing you can outrun is a turtle!” Zuma teased playfully. Skye responded by jumping onto Zuma’s back, the sudden added weight causing him to collapse into the sand.
Skye smirked, “Who’s the short one now?”
“Look out!”
Marshall slid across the sand as he tried to stop, but his momentum kept him going, and he crashed into the other two pups.
“Oops, sorry, guys.” Marshall apologized with a giggle.
The pups picked themselves up and shook off the sand.
“Who’s up for a rematch?” Zuma asked, “Last one to the water is a stale pup treat?”
“You’re on!” Skye giggled, “On three. One… Two…”
“Three!” Zuma finished, kicking up sand as he rushed ahead.
“Hey! That’s cheating! No fair!” Skye shouted, running after him to try and catch up.
“Don’t go too far, you two!” Ryder called as he began setting up their beach supplies with Rocky.
Skye had managed to catch up with Zuma, and the two were now neck and neck as they raced to the surf.
“I’ll beat you this time!”
“I don’t think so! The beach is my turf!”
The two crashed into the waves with a big splash, shrieking with laughter at the shock of the cool ocean water.
“I win!” The two exclaimed, before glaring at each other. “No, I win!”
“I’m pretty sure you tied.” Chase commented.
“No way! We need a tie-breaker.” Zuma demanded, “Something that won’t end in a tie.”
“That means another race is out. So what should we do instead?”
Zuma thought for a moment, putting a paw to his chin before his eyes fell on the beach bag Ryder had brought.
“I’ve got the perfect idea. Hey, Ryder!”
Zuma ran up to where Ryder was lounging on a beach chair.
“You brought the water guns, right?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Skye and I want to play with them.”
“Sure, that’s what we brought them for.”
Rocky looked up from the book he was reading, “As long as you promise to play far away from me. I don’t want to get hit with a stray shot.”
Zuma laughed as he took two of the water guns, “Don’t worry, we’ll be sure you’re not in the splash zone.”
Once Zuma filled the water guns, he led Skye to an empty part of the beach far enough away to avoid accidentally squirting anyone.
“Oh, this is gonna be fun.” Skye giggled, picking up one of the water guns as Zuma drew a circle in the sand.
“First one to get five clear hits wins. No going beyond the circle, and if either of us runs out of water, the game is paused for refills. Those rules sound good?”
“That’s fine by me. Prepare to get owned, Zuma.”
“In your dreams. Water is my element, remember? You’re fighting fire with fire.”
The two pups continued to glare at each other as they took their places at opposite sides of the circle, brandishing the water guns smugly.
Zuma gave a competitive smirk, “Ready…”
Skye nodded, aiming the water gun directly at him, “Set…”
The two adjusted their stances, ready to pounce, eyes fixed on each other.
“… GET WET!” Zuma shouted abruptly, and the two immediately leapt into action.
Water was flying almost instantly, the two pups racing and rolling through the sand to try and dodge the other’s attacks while trying to get a hit.
Skye proved to be a difficult target. Her small size and fast movements made it hard for Zuma to hit her.
That’s not to say it was an easy win for Skye. Zuma’s sharp reflexes helped him dodge Skye’s attacks and his better stamina made up for his slower pace.
It wasn’t long before the two were neck and neck again, with four points each. After refilling the water guns, the two prepared for their final battle.
“Sudden death. Prepare to eat water, Skye.”
“You don’t eat water, Zuma, you drink it. I figured, as the resident water expert, you’d know that.”
“Oh, you did not go there, dude. Now you’re really gonna get it.”
“We’ll see. Enough talk; I’m ready to win this.”
They took their places and prepared for battle.
“Ready… Set… GET WET!” Zuma charged at Skye, squirting his water gun at full force. Skye managed to roll to the side before getting hit, but Zuma anticipated the move and was able to pin Skye to the ground.
“Any last words?” He asked, aiming the water gun directly at her head,
“Yeah, actually. I had fun doing this. Competing with you is always a treat, but you gotta admit…”
Skye reached for her water gun and squirted Zuma right in the face.
“You can be a bit too cocky for your own good.”
Zuma burst out laughing as he shook the water from his face, “Gotta hand it to you, Skye, that was pretty clever. Good game, well done.”
“Thanks, you were pretty good yourself. Thanks for not going easy on me.”
“Of course, where’s the fun in letting you win?”
“Exactly. You know, that ‘ready, set, get wet’ you came up with was pretty clever too. It suits you.”
Zuma thought about it for a moment, “Yeah, it does, doesn’t it?”
“Maybe that can be, like, your catchphrase or something. Like how Chase is always saying ‘Chase is on the case’ and Rocky always says ‘don’t use it, reuse it’. That can be what you say.”
“You have a good point there. Maybe you and Marshall can come up with your own catchphrases too; that way, we can all have catchphrases.”
“Yeah, that’d be fun. Maybe mine can be like ‘Skye’s born for the sky’ or ‘I’m Skye-high flying’ what do you think?”
“Eh, needs some work.”
