Visual novel music: I guess it exists

During the height of my visual novel fandom, I would always listen to a VN’s music. That started decreasing during the late 2000s, right as my interest in computer visual novels began to fade. Most of the music that I recall from the VNs which I read was “kinda okay for a Sega Genesis,” for lack of a better term. In other words, competent music, but which gave the impression that the creators only had access to a single electronic keyboard. The instruments sounded sorta tinny, and most of the tunes weren’t memorable.

Between about 2002 and 2011, my expectation for visual novel music was “Does it compare well to _Heart de Roommate_?” In other words, a soundtrack that I kind of liked, even though it was somewhat forgettable. It had a couple tracks like “Mysterious Walk” which left a good impression, though most of the others were just adequate upbeat or sad songs. There were only a couple of VN soundtracks which I heard in that decade that left much of an impression on me. To be specific...

* _Private Nurse_ was my gold standard. It was more mellow than others which I recall, with just a couple of upbeat tracks. I was impressed by how many of the songs were piano-based. It seemed to show restraint and minimalism.

* I liked the music in _Kanon_ more than the story, which I didn’t finish. Yes, I thought it sounded much older than its 1999 publication. In my opinion, the songs seemed to use maybe three instruments each. However, at least I could recognize the tracks during that time in the mid-2000s when I was fascinated by MIDI music. I looked for MIDI file arrangements of a wide variety of famous songs and instrumentals. After a while, I found several websites which remade music from _Kanon_ into this format. At the time, this was fascinating stuff.

* I liked the freeware VN _Mail Order Bride_ enough to finish reading the story. Its music enhanced the experience. I appreciated how low-fi and minimalist it was. The tunes seemed appropriate for the historical fiction story.

In the recent past, I’ve seen a few people on r/visualnovels gush about their favorite soundtracks. Most are from PC exclusive translated titles which I’ve heard plenty of good things about. However, since they weren’t translated when I was buying three-for-the-price-of-two VN specials from J-List during the 2000s, I’ve read almost none of the frequently-recommended ones. There’s a chance that I will take time over the next eleven months to read a few of them. Until then...

* There was that one person on Reddit who really liked the _Dramatical Murder_ soundtrack, and described it with the word “synthwave.” I wasn’t familiar with the term. One search on Youtube later, I found some if not all of the soundtrack. I’d describe it as intentionally retro electronic music. It’s distinct, though I don’t know whether or not I like it. Also, does the music make sense in a sci-fi dystopia story?

* I keep seeing _Muv-Luv Alternative_ in lists of favorite soundtracks. Today, I decided to look for it. I was surprised that it was also on Youtube. I was even more surprised to learn that it includes at least one JAM Project song. The rest of the music had variety, which was nice. Though a few of the songs had that old familiar 16-bit synthesized sound.

* I see _Umineko_ listed at least as often. Today, I picked a random mix of seven or eight songs from its TVTropes Awesome Music page, listened to them on Youtube, and thought about whether I liked them. Right now, I’m leaning towards ‘yes.’ The music had variety, and like the MLA songs, most of them seemed to have more than three instruments. For what it’s worth, there’s at least four _Umineko_ related albums on iTunes US.

Getting you started on Deimos and Rory, please talk about them I'm so curious

So Rory and Deimos came from the same AAHW facility - real cream of the crop type, the upper echelon of training and quality in clones and sleepwalker programs and the like. One of the Auditor's real pride and joys, and a lot of good quality Soldats and Engineers came out of this particular compound. This made Rory a real outlier when it came to being "printed" wrong, but he was good enough of an Agent to not be slaughtered and remade. But he stood out, and not in a good way.

He never got on with his superiors. He hated the AAHW training and none of this die for the Auditor's cause chase down Hank Wimbleton stuff made any sense to him. He wanted something different, and he only doubled down on the notion when Rory began to discover and explore his heart's desire and little expressions of himself. The main thing that saved him was art. His fellow Agents looked down on him, Soldats and Engineers hated dealing with him, and no matter how hard or persistently they corrected his behaviour, he only seemed to get worse.

Deimos instead conformed to the AAHW's standards, not because he desired to, but because he's just a bit smarter than Rory. Better at masking himself and laying low. But he found himself drawn to the infamously wayward person he had been hearing of, and Deimos sought Rory out one day. They became very fast friends, which is a pretty big deal for both of them.

Rory was really quite nasty back in the day, and no one liked him and he didn't like anyone else. Real nervous violent little animal type. Deimos was more casual and never really had anyone hanging around for long, trying to coast by not thinking too deeply or feeling too much about things, cus Dei was already getting the sense that something is wrong. (A certain Doc in his AAHW era only reaffirmed this). So they really clicked - two misfits against the world who needed a little distraction from everything. But they both catch feelings and dive in a little too deeply with one another.

But the thing is, Rory was spiralling deeper into a hole of negative emotion from his perpetual ongoing abuse from various sources. And Deimos didn't know how to handle that, and when push came to shove... well, Deimos let Rory down. Rory died and... Deimos had to move on.

But when Rory and Deimos reunite years later... and after the events of Dedmos, yet again they have so much common ground to relate with. A loss of oneself, a death and revival, something given and something taken, something forever gone. Their faces are no longer recognisable, their fundamentals altered, but they know each other.

Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known

and now these two remain.

I was considering holding this one to reveal the character that reconstructed Rory, but it's gonna take forever to do that and I felt this idea was cuter anyway. I've never had B&J ice cream but the chocolate fudge brownie one looked yummy! I think the cookie dough one is the super well-known one, though.
