Necropolis Now (or How The Dead Live) . Student work for MUIR + OPENWORK RMIT Master’s Studio . The studio speculates on how the uncanny and charged condition of the existing brick quarry might sponsor a new civic landscape via the Necropolis, around which a future suburb can be formed. . The studio was offered to both Architecture and Landscape Architecture students and is part of ongoing collaborative research between Muir Architecture + Openwork. . This is a model of our Duckett Street Park project for the Nightingale Village in Brunswick. Precinct site planning allows us to close the existing street for cars and give the liberated space over to people. Rather than re-designing the road, we leave it as-found but sabotage it for vehicles by sawing-up sections of asphalt to add new soil, trees, planting and a turf berm. . The project was designed in close collaboration with the City of Moreland and Nightingale Housing and forms the shared address of the 6 adjacent nightingale projects by Andrew Maynard Architects, Architecture Architecture, Breathe, Clare Cousins Architects, Hayball and Kennedy Nolan. MUIR+OPENWORK are honoured to share the design for Victoria's Family Violence Memorial which was recently unveiled by the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, The Hon Gabrielle Williams. . St. Andrews Place Reserve has been chosen as the site for the project after thorough consideration. The site is located in next to the Parliament Precinct in East Melbourne and has an outlook to Fitzroy Gardens. The Concept Design is framed around five elemental design moves that create a situation of procession, invitation and permission within the existing reserve. Each create tipping points within St. Andrews Place that change the way people behave in the site rather than changing the site character itself. To the north of the site, the existing lie of the land is countered with a fold within the turfed surface of the Reserve. The fold provides an elevated and flat datum for additional congregation within the space, and also allows for people to view down into the room for gathering and across to the Fitzroy Gardens. . The design has evolved in consultation with the City of Melbourne, the Department of Premier and Cabinet Office for Women, The Victims and Survivors Advisory Committee, ARMS (Vic) and stakeholders of the Forced Adoption Practices Memorial and The Traditional Owners of Boon Wurrung, Bunurong and Wurundjeri. . We were pleased to be invited to the Heide Museum of Modern Art Women’s Lunch today for the public launch of our garden project. We’ve been working with @heidemoma and their gardener Katie Grace on a proposal for a healing garden within the grounds of the Heide I kitchen garden. The brief is to create a space that grants permission for small groups with special physical and developmental needs to occupy an immersive, sensorial garden. The proposal for the healing garden is not a remaking of the site or the importation of a new idea.
