#the mary ellen carter story. IS INSANEEE #a when the marine electric went down in 81. (which is a wholeee other story) the water was super cold #and most succumbed to hypothermia but one of the survivors got into a half deflated lifeboat and said that that song kept him alive #so after he recovered stan rodgers put together a benefit show for him and the other survivors. to raise funds for families of the dead #(the company like didn’t pay anythinggg to them it was a whole issue. the ship was bound to sink due to negligence from the company)#(but they placed all the blame on the captain who survived and the families couldn’t sue the company it was a fucking nightmare.)#and the benefit concert was the last concert stan rodgers ever did because a week later he died in a fire on a plane crash.#the entire story is insane. READ ABOUT THE MARINE ELECTRIC PLEADE NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT HER #we have a memorial for it right outside our academic building i walk by it everyday
